NorthEast United 1-0 Kerala Blasters: Koke wins it for Abraham's side
http://static.goal.com/468700/468738_heroa.jpg

The Spaniard’s first half strike towards the end of the first half was the difference between the two sides…

NorthEast United FC started their Indian Super League (ISL) campaign on a perfect note as they edged past Kerala Blasters 1-0 at the Indira Gandhi International Stadium, Guwahati on Monday evening.

Koke scored the winner in the 45th minute as the youngest side of the ISL registered three points.

Ricki Herbert lined-up his side in a 4-4-1-1 formation with marquee signing Joan Capdevila operating as a left back as they beefed their defense with star goalkeeper Alexsander Tzorvas.

On the other hand, David James started between the sticks for Kerala Blasters with Iain Hume and CS Sabeeth starting upfront while Michael Chopra was benched as he wasn't fully fit.

It was the north east side which started the better of the two as the teams played cautiously in order to avoid conceding an early goal. James Keene did well upfront as he held the ball up on a couple of occasions but his attempted pass for Zodingliana Ralte was intercepted.

In the 16th minute, Hume thought he had done enough to put his side ahead as he tapped in a perfect Stephen Pearson cross but was rightly flagged offside.

Thereafter, Penn Orji began to dictate proceedings from the middle of the park. Robin Gurung did well to intercept a through ball from Pearson as Sabeeth was lurking around inside the box and would have been through on goal.

Just after the half way mark in the first half, Sabeeth’s venomous shot from outside the box tested Tzorvas’ resolve as the Greek custodian had to stretch to his right in order to keep the score level.

Thereafter, it was David James’ turn to make a fantastic save as he denied Durga Boro whose long range effort seemed destined for goal in the 32nd minute.

The breakthrough came in the 45th minute when Koke put the home side ahead. Aibor Khongjee took a throw-in towards David Nghaite however, Gurwinder Singh’s attempted clearance went as far as Koke. The Spaniard didn’t need to take a second touch as he smashed it on the half volley to the right of David James which gave him no chance whatsoever.

In the second half, Kerala Blasters had the first chance in the 55th minute when James McAllister’s corner-kick saw Cedric Hengbart rise the highest but the effort was easily collected by Tzorvas.

McAllister was lucky not to collect a booking after he pulled down Felipe de Castro around the hour mark.

In their search for an equalizer, James brought in Michael Chopra and Saumik Dey with Pearson and Sabeeth being subbed.

Orji and Hume combined well as the former found Hume whose return pass saw the Nigerian caught in an offside position and Chopra tapped the ball home after the whistle had been blown, much to the delight of the home fans.

Keene attempted a long range shot in the 76th minute which didn’t bother James in goal.

Tzorvas was called into action by Chopra who did well to get past a couple of NorthEast United players to unleash a fierce right footed shot which was parried away by the home side’s goalkeeper.

Substitute Dong-Hyun Do showcased his dribbling abilities as he cut inside from the right only to see his shot take a deflection off Gurwinder to earn his side a corner in the 80th minute.

Hume did well to turn away from the NorthEast United defenders and saw his shot being cleared off the line by Robin Gurung. The ball fell to an unmarked Chopra who had enough time to place his shot but instead struck it into the bodies on the line.

Chopra had an opportunity he shouldn’t have missed as Tzorvas’ goal-kick went straight to him and the English striker saw his shot go wide with an empty net staring at him.

Both teams missed a flurry of chances in added time. Ricki Herbert's team should have wrapped up the game when Dong went romping down the middle prompting David James to come off his line to save. The ball fell to Milan Singh whose attempted chip came off the crossbar. Dong had another opportunity but he slammed his shot over the bar.

Hume will have nightmares of his miss in the fourth minute of added time. A quick Andrew Barisic throw-in found the Canadian striker unmarked in the box. His shot however went wide off the goal much to the relief of Tzorvas who couldn't have reached it.

NorthEast United will be pleased with their performance while Kerala Blasters need to address their wastefulness upfront before they face Chennaiyin FC next.

KOKE POWERS NEUFC TO WIN
Abhishek Ganguly
Guwahati:

SPANIARD SCORES LATE IN FIRST HALF TO SUBDUE PENN ORJI-LED KERALA BLASTERS 1-0
The roar of the crowd could be heard a kilometre away from the Indira Gandhi Stadium. It was deafening as North-East United FC's (NEUFC) Spaniard recruit Sergio Contreras Pardo, better known as Koke, stabbed the ball home to give his team a 1-0 lead on the stroke of half-time in their opening ISL match against the Kerala Masters here on Monday.
The 35,000-strong crowd, however, could not care less about the decibel levels. Their collective roar also marked the beginning of a new era in Indian football.

Koke's goal not only broke the deadlock but also proved to be the difference between the two sides and left NEUFC's co-owner John Abraham super excited.

There might have been just one goal in the game but the fans lent vocal support to the home team throughout the 90 minutes. Every time an NEUFC player touched the ball, launched an attack, shot at goal or even made a clearance, the crowd roared its approval.

NEUFC's marquee player Joan Capdevila was employed as a central defender by manager Ricki Herbert as the match began on a speedy note with both teams looking to go on the attack.NEUFC's James Keene and Koke combined well while local lad Durga Boro and Zodingliana also caught the eye.

For Kerala Blasters, former East Bengal midfielder Penn Orji was ticking the ball around nicely while Iain Hume posed a threat to the home team's defence on a few occasions. The Canadian striker had the ball in the back of the net in the 16th minute, but it was ruled out for off-side.

A few minutes later, Blasters' Sabeeth did well to cut in from the left and let one fly but it was well saved by NEUFC goalkeeper Alexandros Tzorvas. A high point in the game came in the 33rd minute when Durga Boro's powerful long-range shot was parried away former England goalkeeper and Kerala Blasters' marquee player David James, diving full-length to his left.

And then came the goal. David Ngaihte rolled the ball into the box from the right and Koke arrived in time to neatly place it home.

The second half was as entertaining as the first with Kerala Blasters pressing for the equalizer. Their Indian-origin striker Michael Chopra, who came on as a substitute, looked sharp. He forced Tzorvas into making three good saves while Robin Gurung also effected a spectacular back-volley goalline clearance. In the final minutes, Zodingliana was unlucky to see his shot come back off the horizontal.

Fans' joy knew no bounds when referee Pratap Singh blew the final whistle and they celebrated their team's maiden win till late in the night.

ISL OFF TO A COLOURFUL START IN N-E
Guwahati:
TNN

All roads in Guwahati on Monday led to the Indira Gandhi Stadium. The sheer number of people coming in to watch the Indian Super League match between North-East United FC and Kerala Blasters FC even caused a mini jam on National Highway 37. But, once you beat the traffic snarl and entered the stadium, it was an amazing experience.
It was in almost pristine conditions, a new era in Indian football was ushered in as the entire North-East basked in reflected glory. The stadium packed to the brim. Fans sang and danced in the stands. Papon Da and Zubin Garg regaled fans in their inimitable style prior to the game. Fireworks lit up the night sky. The pitch resembled a green carpet under the full glow of the floodlights. One could not have asked for a better setting for ISL's first match in the North-East where football is a celebration of life itself. You could actually be forgiven for mistaking the Indira Gandhi Stadium here on Monday for a European or a Brazilian venue.NEUFC's 1-0 win over Kerala Blasters proved to be the icing on the cake.

The rousing reception that the NEUFC players got from the fans when they took a lap of honour was electrifying. But, the biggest cheer was reserved for the Little Master --Sachin Tendulkar, the co-owner of Kerala Blasters FC. Sachin was given a standing ovation by the crowd. The ISL truly has the potential to change the face of Indian football and Tendulkar highlighted just that.

Larsing Ming, co-owner of NEUFC also underlined this point. “It can make a lot of difference to the game here. In general, ISL has given football a bigger platform. As far as North-East is concerned, with players from the region rubbing shoulders with top players of the world, it is bound to boost the interest of fans here,“ he said. “The ISL is revolution and football is the winner,“ he added.

Speaking about his team, Ming said, “It was a challenge to set up NEUFC. It is always exciting to bring in talented players from across the globe. We have got a very interesting mix of foreigners.Ours is a balanced squad and we had a decent pre-season as well. The North-East has already emerged as a powerhouse in Indian football. If NEUFC does well in ISL, it will only re-assert the region's superiority in the sport.“

Bagan duo out to `strike' for Chennaiyin
Aravind Suchindran
Chennai:

Balwant, Jeje Relish The Challenge Of Scoring Goals For Their ISL Side
They may not be from Chennai, but for the two next two months their sole aim is to see Chennaiyan FC finish on top of the ISL table. Meet Jeje Lalpekhlua and Balwant Singh -two of India's best strikers who will carry the hopes of the city soccer fans. While Jeje is one of the most promising Indian strikers at the moment, Balwant was a sensation in the I League last season playing for Churchill Brothers.
The interesting part of this Indian combo upfront is that they both represent Mohun Bagan in the domestic circuit this season. Both Jeje and Balwant were pretty impressive in the recently concluded Calcutta Football league where their team narrowly fin ished second to arch-rivals East Bengal. “We got to play together daily during the CFL and it was a good thing. I gained a lot of confidence scoring the goals, but now it's time to carry it forward. I look to maintain my form and continue the good work for Chennaiyin FC,“ Balwant, who scored 17 goals in all competitions last season, told TOI.

Jeje has been waiting for this opportunity for a while and is looking to make the most of it.“They were saying they would start the ISL for the last two years. And when I finally saw the opening ceremony , I was really excited. Things cannot get bigger than this for Indian football,“ Jeje said.

Balwant, originally from Punjab, has played a few games in Chennai and is already feeling at home here. “I feel comfortable in Chennai, it's a great city . I have played for Punjab in Chennai during the 2009 Santosh Trophy and have also come a few times during my time with JCT,“ he said.

Chennaiyin FC have a mar quee manager in Marco Materazzi and the presence of stars like Elano and John Stiven Mendoza is making Jeje very excited about the whole project. “If you look at the foreigners in the league, they are of such high standards and we get to learn a lot from them.Along with that, if you see the amount of coverage this league is getting, it will surely help Indians get a lot of exposure and I am happy for that,“ said Jeje, who played a big role in India's SAFF Cup victory in 2011.

There will also be strong competition to get into the playing XI, but the duo is not too worried.“Nothing is ever easy . Only six Indians can play in the first XI and there's going to be a lot of competition. But that's par for the course, we are ready for it,“ Balwant said.

PREVIEW - Del Piero vs Trezeguet, a new contest
Saumyajit Basu
New Delhi:T

Time for promos is over and it's time to get down to brass tacks. After Bayern Munich's visit, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium is set to savour the opening of the blockbuster release featuring Alessandro Del Piero and David Trezeguet in lead roles.
To mark a new chapter in the Capital's sporting landscape, the curtain will go up in the theatre located in the south of the Capital on Wednesday evening with the second match of the Indian Super League featuring hosts Delhi Dynamos and Pune City FC. The run-up to the event and the opening ceremony in Kolkata had a heavy dose of popular and time-tested props that bespoke of business acumen with the idea that sells.

Now the bandwagon shifts to the Capital. Even if the rest of the names don't ring any bell, a 39-year old Alessandro Del Piero still can attract and generate a lot of interest in the people who have enjoyed a daily dose of European leagues for the last 20-odd years. It is time for them to have a look at the stars in flesh and blood with ISL providing the platform.

The key point of interest will be the battle between Del Piero and Trezeguet, one Italian World Cup winner and an other having a European championship medal with France. One flourished as a striker playing from a the deep that the Italians love to call trequartista and earned the epithet of Il Phenomeno for his vision, dribbling skills and a knack of scoring incredible goals for `Old Lady' Juventus.

The Delhi team is coached by Belgian coach Harm van Veldhoven while his opposite number at Pune City FC is Franco Colomba. The team from Maharashtra had a month-long training session at the Serie A club Fiorentina, with whom they have a tie-up.The coach has drawn heavily from his Italian connection and the squad includes his son Davide Colomba, who is a leftsided midfielder. Goalkeeper Emanuele Belardi and centreback's Bruno Cirillo and Daniele Magliochheti complete the Italian delegation.

Garcia was unstoppable'
Kolkata:
AGENCIES

Luis Garcia might not have scored a goal in their 3-0 rout of Mumbai City FC but that he was at the centre of Atletico de Kolkata's attack was acknowledged by none other than their opponents' manager Peter Reid.
“I think Garcia played beautifully and we were unable to contend him,“ the English pundit said of the former Liverpool star who was part of their 2005 UEFA Champions League team.

Without taking anything away from Atletico de Kolkata, he said: “I think it's fair to say the better team won on the day . They passed better than us.“

The Mumbai attack lacked sting without Nicolas Anelka (suspension) and Freddie Ljungberg (calf muscle injury) but Reid insisted to focus on the ground realities that they did not pass well. “I don't want to make any excuse. We did not pass the ball well. It's not a pleasant thing, we can only get better. You cannot win football matches if you give the ball away. “I made a couple of changes, I thought we started the second half better. But the second goal changed the complexion of the game,“ Reid told reporters after their loss at the Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Krirangan in the ISL opener. On confusion about the availability of the mercurial Frenchman Anelka, Reid said they did not want to risk going against the FIFA ban despite a green signal from the All India Football Federation (AIFF).

The ref who gave up pizzas & politics
Marcus Mergulhao
Kolkata:

Chris Penso, the man who was at the centre of Sunday's Indian Super League opener at the Salt Lake Stadium, would have not taken to suvpervising football matches at the highest level had his political career taken off. Penso, a senior referee from Major League Soccer (MLS), contested elections for the Dover mayor' post in 2003 when he was 21 and lost by a mere seven votes. He made another unsuccessful bid for the office in 2007.According to reports, Penso was also the manager of his family pizza business (Penso's Pizza), which has been in service since 1936. He is likely to return to take charge of family business after he calls time on whistle-blowing. He was approved as an international referee by FIFA in 2012.
Penso, whose wife is also a football referee, was one of the three officials from the United States who officiated the opening game between Atletico de Kolkata and Mumbai City FC at the Salt Lake stadium on Sunday.

“We have 30 Indian referees on ISL duty. At the moment, we have three foreign referees from the US. A few other foreign referees could come on board,“ said Gautam Kar, head of referees department, All India Football Federation (AIFF). The AIFF has written to several countries inviting top referees to officiate in the ISL but most have turned down the invitation as their officials are busy supervising domestic matches.

In sweltering India, it's raining money

The ISL Has Opened Its Coffers For Footballers. TOI Looks At Some Of The Impressive ‘Take Homes’
India’s financial muscle in sports is not restricted to cricket alone. The Indian Premier League (IPL) T20 cricket, as the world knows, is cash-rich and attracts the best cricketers from around the world, but even in football, franchisees in the Indian Super League (ISL) are coming up with offers that have made famous names stop for a while and ponder.
The capture of Delhi Dynamos marquee player Alessandro Del Piero and signing of French star Nicolas Anelka provides a glimmer of hope that India can be an alternative destination for players looking beyond Middle East and the United States.

Delhi Dynamos, for example, splashed out around Rs 11 crore to make Del Piero, a World Cup winner with Italy in 2006, the highest paid footballer in the ISL.

A marquee player for Australian club Sydney FC last season, Del Piero rejected offers from several clubs around the world, but when Delhi came calling with a four-month offer of $1.8 million, the Juventus legend could simply not refuse.

Del Piero is not the only player of repute who is paid handsomely. Nicolas Anelka could have so easily been playing in the English Premier League if he had not walked out of West Brom following a five-match ban imposed by the FA in England for a ‘quenelle’ gesture. Mumbai City FC will not mind as the French striker came on board after agreeing a three-month contract worth Rs 5.4 crore, ignoring earlier approaches from FC Pune City (approx 4.8 crore) and Chennaiyin FC (Rs 4.2 crore).

Brazilian midfielder Elano Blumer is also among the best-paid players in the ISL, earning Rs 4.8 crore as Chennaiyin FC’s marquee player, a welcome change from his turbulent days at Flamengo in Brazil.

David Trezeguet asked and got Rs 4.5 crore from Pune City FC, besides nine business-class flight tickets and five-star accommodation for his family of eight.

Arsenal legends Robert Pires and Freddie Ljungberg were snared by IMG-Reliance, organizers of the league, for Rs 4.1 crore and Rs 4 crore respectively and then placed in the common marquee pool where FC Goa and Mumbai City made their picks.

Atletico de Kolkata and NorthEast United FC were among the first two franchisees to sign marquee players on their own.

Kolkata convinced former Liverpool star Luis Garcia to sign on the dotted line for Rs 2.70 crore while Joan Capedevila settled for Rs 2.25 crore with North-East United. first two franchisees to sign marquee players on their own.

I told them that the challenge before them is to be pan regional rather than just a state club. They need to do whatever they can to get the entire region behind them. I told the interna tional players that you may come from different countries but when you walk on to the pitch, you all are one. You are a team.

What are your plans to develop the sport at the grassroots level?

Shillong Lajong have a very robust grassroots programme. For Guwahati, specifically , we want to divert money to two verticals. First and foremost, we are looking at charity , hoping to give underprivileged children the opportunity to play football. This needs to be structured. Second, open schools in Assam. We are looking to Ming and Lajong to use their expertise to boost the game in other parts of North-East.

Are you doing a movie on Mohun Bagan's 1911 IFA Shield win?

Yes, that is right. It is directed by Shoojit Sircar. It is based on a true story of the1911 IFA Shield. I am playing Sibdas Bhaduri. I am excited. We hope it is commercially successful and wins national awards.

Mendoza hopes to form deadly combo with Brazil's Elano
Chennai
TIMES NEWS NETWORK

John Stiven Mendoza became the second Colombian to join the Chennaiyin FC squad after Jairo Suarez. The 22-year-old striker, who represented Colombia in the U-17 World and U-20 Copa America, is all set to make his debut against FC Goa on Wednesday .
Mendoza, one of the rising stars in Colombia, who could not make it to the senior national side yet as there is stiff competition, feels he has time on his side and is focusing hard on scoring as many goals as possible in the ISL which will help boost his confidence.

“Colombia have a great team with quality players all over the pitch, especially in the forward-line. So, it is not very easy to break into the national side. But I'm working hard to improve my game. I'm focused on scoring plenty of goals and helping Chennaiyin FC win the title. Hopefully with time I'll eventually get into the national team,“ Mendoza said.

Mendoza felt Chennaiyin FC's marquee player Elano, who is known for creating chances for the forwards, will make a big impact.

“We all know about Elano's class and achievements. He has played for some of the biggest clubs in the world and has also represented Brazil in top competitions. It'll be great to play alongside him and I'm working hard on my game and looking forward to form a good understanding with him,“ he added.

On the Chennaiyin FC team Mendoza said: “Our team is loaded with plenty of experienced world-class players like Elano, Materazzi, Silvestre and Mendy , along with some of the talented Indians. There is so much to learn from these players. I didn't have much idea about Indian football before I landed here but now I've realised that many of them have the potential to play abroad.“

Mendoza is also looking to embrace a new culture.

“After playing in Colombia all my life I knew that I needed to test myself in a foreign environment and it was always going to be difficult to adapt to the new culture and food. I also have to learn English quickly so that I can settle down quickly. I'm planning to take some help from my friend Suarez. However, the entire squad has been very friendly and I'm enjoying my time here,“ Mendoza said.

STARS FAIL TO SHINE AS ISL REGISTERS ITS FIRST GOALLESS DRAW IN CAPITAL CITY
The opening of the Delhi leg of Indian Super League went off to a lukewarm start in front of half-empty stands of the brightly-lit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Tuesday evening. It's the way you look at things, so half-empty can be argued as half full also. However, the gathering never let their enthusiasm slack when Alessandro Del Piero did not find himself in the starting XI for Delhi Dynamos. However, David Trezeguet did for the visitors Pune City FC.
The reason for not starting with Del Piero must be real strong for Delhi Dynamos' coach Harm van Veldhoven. For those who braved the Diwali traffic to make it to the ground came only to see the Italian.

After 33 minutes of lugubrious kickabout from old hands like Anwar Ali and Trezeguet, who looked like swimming against heavy current (read age) when going for the ball, Dynamos Belgian coach introduced his marquee player, Del Piero.

Never in the cities of the world that the Italian maestro played, was he greeted with the chorus “Piero, Piero.“ He didn't mind though. He has come to enjoy himself and so he did. Pushing a pass for Mads Junker to fire it wide or holding off a couple of defenders, thus showing glimpses of the player he was.

Actually , the game was played in past tense. It went off on a sleep-walking pace and as the game progressed, the pace slackened even more.

Midway through the second session, most of them were walking even though the crowd tried to break their slumber and sloth with Mexican waves. But outside support can do so much, you know.

With one sweet turn Del Piero, shrugged off his marker but the pace needed in the follow up to break free wasn't there. He tumbled and fell and looked pleadingly for a freekick.

The Italian even managed one from some 25 yards. The young crowd, used to seeing him curve and dip from such range on television or youtube, anticipated something similar. Del Piero failed to clear the wall.

At the other end, Trezeguet was taking his constitutional for the whole of 90 minutes. He could complain about the lack of quality service, but one is not sure whether he could manage to run for it. Even Dudu Omag bemi, who came on as a substitute, was bitten by the sloth bug.Just a month or so earlier, he was electric for East Bengal in the Kolkata League. Blasters shift camp to Manjeri Kochi: The Kerala Blasters have decided to shift their training camp in Kerala to Payyanad stadium in Manjeri. The move comes after the Blasters' management received flurry of requests from fans in the Malabar region to organize the team's training camp there. The Kochi-based franchise, who lost their opening fixture in ISL to NorthEast United FC on Monday, will now land in Manjeri on Wednesday and resume training.Blasters had their pre-season training at the Corporation stadium in Thrissur and played practice matches there before they moved to Goa in the first week of October. Enforce Anelka ban, Fifa tells India
Marcus Mergulhao
Panaji

The confusion surrounding Nicolas Anelka's availability for at least the opening game of the Indian Super League should not have surfaced, certainly not when Fifa had cleared doubts almost a fortnight ago.
According to a Fifa spokesperson, the governing body for world football wrote to the All India Football Federation on September 30 where they referred to article 12 para 1 of the Regulations on Status and Transfer of Players.

“According to the regulation, any disciplinary sanction of up to four matches or up to three months that has been imposed on a player by the former association but not yet (entirely) served by the time of the transfer shall be enforced by the new association at which the player has been registered in order for the sanction to be served at the domestic level. “Since the suspension imposed on Nicolas Anelka by The Football Association had not been (fully) served before the international transfer of the said player to India (Mumbai City FC) took place, the All India Football Federation shall enforce the relevant suspension,“ a Fifa spokesperson told TOI on Tuesday . After Mumbai City FC's opening loss against Atletico de Kolkata on Sunday , coach Peter Reid had admitted that the franchise “originally planned to play him and then go to Fifa.“

PREVIEW FC Goa and Zico eye winning start
Marcus Mergulhao
Panaji

If anyone needed any reminding, the Indian Super League (ISL) is proving it is not just some grandiose jamboree that gives industrialists, cricketers and Bollywood stars a piece of the football pie. Essentially , this remains a football tournament, and on the evidence of what the league has showcased in the first three days, there is very little that has separated the teams.
FC Goa and Chennaiyin FC complete the first round battles at the Nehru Stadium in Fatorda on Wednesday and it's no surprise that both sides are looking to hit the ground running, or, as FC Goa chief coach Zico admitted, there is a danger they could be left behind.

“In a league like this one, every match becomes crucial, especially those at the start,“ said Zico, the bestpaid manager in the league and, unarguably , the man with the biggest footballing reputation in India at the moment.

A two time World Player of the Year and among the greatest footballers to kick the ball, Zico's presence is considered an added advantage for FC Goa. But the man can't score goals from the dug-out and will have to rely on a team that has so far been sluggish to embrace his attack-minded philosophy . In two of the three friendlies that the team played, FC Goa looked out of sorts, unable to dictate terms. Of course, all three have resulted in victories but the smirk on Zico's face gave the story away . “Friendlies are different to what we will play in the opening game. Everyone knows the players don't really give their best in training,“ explained the Brazil legend.

Former Manchester United defender Mikael Silvestre and his French counterpart Bernard Mendy can form one of the strongest defensive pairings, good enough to muzzle any threat, although, given that he joined the squad quite late, Silvestre had no clue if he would have a role to play. “The manager hasn't told me anything about starting (the game) but I think I am ready . I am not in my prime anymore but I have had good sessions with the boys so will try to perform to my best if I get the chance to play ,“ said Silvestre.

One man who will definitely not start, or play, is marquee player-cummanager Marco Materazzi. With a team that has a defence like Silvestre, Mendy , Gouramangi Singh and Dhanachandra Singh, he will be happy to remain in the dugout.

Indian players need to get into the act
Bhaichung Bhutia

I think it has been a great I start for Hero ISL because the opening two days have been blockbuster matches. As a football fan and watcher, I have been truly impressed by the impact that the tournament has had on the country .
The Atletico de Kolkata and Mumbai City FC match was a big moment for Indian football. The 3-0 scoreline did justice to the talent on display. Two of the three goals were world class and provided good entertainment to the crowd at the iconic Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata.

The crowd was massive on both the days of Hero ISL. The second game was a complete full house and the quality of football was even better. It has been the best form of football I have seen in India in a long time.

The only point I was disappointed was not to see the Indian players get into the action a lot more than they could have. I hope very soon the Indian players get into the scoring sheet because that will mean that the tournament has really achieved its objective.

I think the Indian players should try and learn as much as they can from the legends on view. They should look to lift their game and observe how the Del Pieros, Anelkas are at training, how they view the game. You know seeing these guys eating, training etc will make a big impact on the young India players.

Even in terms of the game, the Indian players can learn little things like how to pass. I mean whether it needs to be a hard pass or a slow pass. The overseas players can pass on knowledge of these nuances to our guys. It is a bit different because the power of the pass makes a lot of difference. The process of getting into position whether to defend or score is another aspect that our boys need to learn.

There needs to be awareness of this aspect especially in the Indian defenders. In the Kolkata match, I saw when the third goal was scored the defender Peter Costa, an Indian, ran with the striker but was in the wrong direction. Probably if he was running in the right direction then he could have saved that goal. But that will come with confidence.

Finally, a word on the opening ceremony . It was colourful and left an impression. My friends from Kolkata told me that till now they had only seen an IPL opening ceremony in the city, but the Hero ISL opening bettered that. That's saying a lot!

I understand that the emotions of the entire region rest on NEUFC. All our domestic players are from the NorthEast and they are playing for a reason and their own region. I am feeling the pressure but that is normal. I co-own a hockey team and feel the same way every time they play . But NEUFC is my baby . I have seen it from its birth. I tend to involved with the game and I hope, I don't run on to the field.

I am excited but I urge fans to be patient. We have got very young players. Let's not judge them by the first game. It's a marathon league. Let's see who lasts the distance. I urge the fans to stand by us and support the team in moments of success as well as failure. What did you tell the boys?

BALWANT STEALS THE SHOW

Becomes First Indian To Score In ISL As He Helps Chennaiyin FC Register An Away Win In Goa
Abhishek Bachchan lauded Elano Blumer's second goal for Chennaiyin FC till FC Goa had restarted.
It was classy, to say the least, and the visitors knew they had done enough to snatch honours from right under Goa's nose. But the goal that should have been cheered, not just by Abhishek, was the first one.

The Indian Super League(ISL) has madeheadlines for theBollywood stars, cricketers, mar quee signings,World Cuppersand foreign signings. But the league still remains Indian at heart and for once there was an Indian footballer as hero.

Please step ahead Balwant Singh. The Chennaiyin FC striker was surprised himself, as much as the partisan crowd, as he turned home a ball from a goalmouth melee just after the half hour mark. This was the first goal by an Indian in the ISL and, for all of Elano's class, was the highlight of Chennaiyin's 2-1 victory over FC Goa at the Nehru Stadium in Fatorda on Wednesday.

Elano * who until a few years ago was donning colours for the Brazilian national team * curled a freekick majestically past an appreciative Goa goalkeeper Jan Seda to silence the capacity crowd inside the first 45 minutes. Goa tried to claw their way back and had a lucky goal to their account through the boots of Gregory Arnolin (65th min ute), but since that disastrous opening half, they had left themselves with too much to do.

Goa's problems were evident right at the start. Holicharan Narzary fumbled with the first ball at his feet, Narayan Das was wayward and others could not really find their feet. The domestic players of Zico's choice were all brave picks but, as the occasion proved, too raw for this stage.

The oldest player on the field, Robert Pires, did not really cover himself in glory. But the Arsenal legend did not do his enormous reputation much harm either. Surprising for a 41-year-old he played the entire 90 minutes and took some tough knocks, many drawing anger in good measure.Chennaiyin, their attack beefed up with Bernard Mendy, Mikael Silvestre and Gouramangi Singh all at the back, looked calm even though the hosts made the brighter start and should have been ahead after the expressive Edgar Marcelino and Pires played a delightful one-two, only to fumble with a clear sight of the goal.

Goa continued to share large possession of the ball but their finishing was generally ineffective and inaccurate. By contrast, Chennaiyin looked dangerous whenever they broke out of defence with Bojan Djordjic in control and Elano waiting for his moment.

Balwant's opening goal was lucky and Elano showed just why Zico closed his eyes when Prabir Das conceded a freekick just outside the box. Elano stepped up and picked up the top corner with ridiculous ease. This was, as Zico would tell you, bread and butter for him.

Goa showed more aggression and tempo in the second session but were still out of depth. Gregory pulled one back with close to half an hour on the clock and substitute Ranti Martins forced a save out of visiting goalkeeper Gennaro Bracigliano, but this was Chennaiyin, and more specifically, Balwant's night.

ISL PREVIEW - It's the battle of east vs north-east
Abhishek Ganguly
Guwahati

NEUFC Bank On Home Advantage
Two teams high on confidence and passion will make for an interesting ISL clash when NorthEast United FC (NEUFC) host Atletico de Kolkata (ATK) at the Indira Gandhi Stadium here on Thursday evening. Both ATK and NEUFC won their opening games in their respective `dens' and neither would want to surrender the early initiative and lose. While ATK registered a convincing 3-0 win over Mumbai City FC on Sunday , NEUFC managed to edge Kerala Blasters FC by a solitary goal a day later.
On Thursday , the north-east side will enjoy a two-fold home advantage -knowledge of local conditions as well as the support of an extremely vocal crowd -which can make a huge difference, considering the fact that half of the ATK side (their foreigners) has no experience of playing in such an ambience. ATK, who played the first of seven home games on the artificial surface at the Salt Lake Stadium, will have to adjust to the grass turf here. That shouldn't be too big an ask as the faster and smoother natural surface should help the Kolkata team's style of pressing football. Luis Garcia looked in good touch and will be one of ATK's key player. NEUFC will surely have to keep a watch on the former Liverpool man.

His marquee player apart, ATK coach Antonio Lopes Habas will also rely on Jofre Mateu Gonzalez to control the midfield and prise open the NEUFC backline -likely to be composed of marquee player Joan Capdevila, Aibor Khongjee, Miguel Garcia and Robin Gurung. Garcia and Jofre will be looking to supply accurate deliveries to Ethiopian Fikru Teferra Lemessa, who showed great agility and alertness in the attacking third and scored the first goal of the ISL, and Baljit Sahni. NEUFC coach Ricki Herbert will be aware of the threat and look to employ someone in the midfield to break down ATK's attacking build-ups. Otherwise, the defence and goalkeeper Alexandros Tzorvas will come under intense pressure.

NEUFC showed good mobility in the midfield against Kerala Blasters and will have to repeat that performance to test the ATK defence. The onus will be on Borja Fernández, who scored a brilliant goal in the first match, and Ofenstse Nato to ensure that the NEUFC players, especially Durga Boro and Zodingliana, don't get much time and space in the midfield. With most NEUFC players being capable of unleashing snap longrangers, ATK goalkeeper Subhashis Roy Chowdhury will have to be alert to such threats.

Few expected us to win: NEUFC coach
Abhishek Ganguly
Guwahati

After making a winning start to their campaign in the Indian Super League (ISL), North-East United FC are now gearing up for their second game against Atletico de Kolkata here on Thursday. A fter their solitary goal victory over Kerala Blasters FC, TOI caught up with NEUFC's Kiwi manager Ricki Herbert for a brief chat.Excerpts:
How would you sum up your team's performance in the first match?

It was a good and bright start for the team. We have a young and inexperienced side and very few people expected NEUFC to win their first game. I thought we did quite well.

What's your take on Kolkata, your next opponent?

I think Kerala were a strong and competitive team. They have a lot of experience and pedigree. I don't know much about Kolkata. They have started well.We have got a few things to plan over the next couple of days.

You played in the 1982 WC against Zico's Brazil and lost. Will you have some unfinished business to conclude when you face FC Goa on Sunday?

Nothing like that (laughs). It was a real privilege to play against him. I was just 21 then. He was an iconic player.

You managed New Zealand in 2010 WC and returned as the only unbeaten team...

For a country like New Zealand which was ranked No 156 in the world four years prior to the 2010 World Cup, it was a really great show.

ISL actors are all football literate, says Abhishek
Marcus Mergulhao
Panaji

Despite being a late entrant in the Indian Super League with Chennaiyin FC, co-owner Abhishek Bachchan has been the most visible face. Showing up at all official functions and even heading to Rome to convince former World Player of the Year, Ronaldinho, Abhishek tells TOI how and why his life has been all about football prior to Chennaiyin's opener against FC Goa at the Nehru Stadium in Fatorda on Wednesday. Excerpts of an interview..
Despite Chennaiyin FC's late start, are you happy with the way the team has shaped up?

Yes, I am happy that we were able to put together a very competitive squad, filling all the positions and players required by Marco (Materazzi).

You have huge admiration for Chelsea FC. Are you exploring the possibility of foreign collaboration, either with Chel sea or any other club?

We would love to it. I am not in favour of a brand alliance but if a European club would want to come on board and give us technical and backroom support, that is something I will more than welcome. But I feel Chennaiyin FC must have its own brand name and value.

What's your own assessment about Chennaiyin FC?

I believe we have a wellrounded competitive squad. It is still too early in the tournament to judge the other teams. I feel we will get a better picture of the team standings in the third week of the tournament.

How much time will you be able to devote to Chennaiyin FC?

I will devote all my time to Chennaiyin FC.

Shah Rukh Khan first showed interest in Indian football when he started talks with champions Dempo Sports Club to buy a stake in the team. As the ISL kicks off and several Bollywood stars are a part, who are the filmstars you want to see support ISL and Indian football?

The more the merrier. Celebrities help draw attention and they will do so for the Indian Super League too. I am glad that the actors associated with ISL are all passionate about football and are very football literate. There is no room in the ISL for mere brand ambassadors. People who know the sport and are passionate about the sport are the kind of actors required to represent Indian football.

‘I am sure Indian Super League will take off’ – Arsene Wenger

Wenger talks about ISL

The veteran gaffer stressed that the presence of big names will boost the game’s popularity in India.

Arsene Wenger, the manager of Arsenal remarked that the Indian Super League (ISL) will grow bigger with time.

“If you look at the history of football, it has always become quicker and it looks like it grows everywhere. It's like a virus that multiplies, so I don't imagine that it won't take off,” he said in an interview with the Arsenal magazine.

“It took a while in the United States but it's now very popular. It faces cricket in India but there's always room for a second sport. There's only really badminton and cricket in India at the moment but there's room for another sport.

“I know that the people there watch the Premier League and I'm convinced that with such a huge population, it will take off,” he further added.

A number of ageing stars are part of the new league including five former Arsenal players, namely Robert Pires, Freddie Ljungberg, Andre Santos, Mikael Silvestre and Nicolas Anelka. The Frenchman opined that the footballers should continue playing till they enjoy the game.

“Being completely at the top finishes when you are 34 at the latest. After that, you have different leagues like the MLS and the Indian Super League. I encourage players to play as long as possible if they really love it. (Robert) Pires is 40 but he still plays and when he comes to training here, he's still very good.

“The only thing I always say is that once you're on the pitch, you give your best. Your age doesn't matter - people can understand that you're not as quick at 40 as you were at 30. Play with passion, with your heart and technical quality - that will be enough,” he told.

While Wenger conceded that several marquee players are past their prime, he stressed that their presence helps popularize the game in the country.

“They give a good image of the game. They can make football popular on different continents and in different countries, where it's taking off. I think it's fantastic,” Wenger said.

Indian Super League: Mumbai City FC rope in Irish defender Darren O’Dea
http://static.goal.com/392500/392583_heroa.jpg

12-Jul-2015 04:53:50
Ranbir Kapoor co-owned outfit have signed the experienced Irish centre-back to bolster their defense which leaked in the maximum number of goals last season...

Darren O’Dea will ply his trade in the second edition of the Indian Super League (ISL) after he penned a deal with Mumbai City FC. The 28-year-old player, who is a Celtic youth product, has played for seven clubs in four different countries in his career.

"I have spoken to 20 to 30 teams, but my little girl starts school this year and we're settled up in Scotland. So moving would have been a big decision. It is actually only a four-month league, so I'll go there and, although they'll probably visit once or twice, it will leave them settled. Then, come Christmas, we will wait and see what I will do,” the player told BBC while explaining the reason for his choice.

The player however, mentioned that he doesn’t have much of an idea about the league he is going to be a part of.

"I haven't a clue,” he said. "It is only in its second year, so it's still finding its feet. Every team needs one marquee player to bring a bit of attention to the league and they are certainly giving it a good go, the way you will be looked after,” he remarked.

He also informed that the positive feedback from the players who were part of the ISL last season helped him get convinced to make a move.

http://static.goal.com/di/76BB4395D8EB26FF4ACEB3DE24D1A5A5.png

“I've spoken to players who played there last year and it was fantastic. It is another experience and something I'm looking forward to. The contract runs until 22 December, which is the final over there, so after that I'll have Christmas at home and from 1 January will be looking to play again, wherever that may be," he stressed the point that the short tenure is one of the major reasons he has agreed to the offer.

After starting his journey at the Scottish club, Darren had loan stints at Reading, Ipswich Town and Leeds United. In 2012, he joined Major League Soccer (MLS) side Toronto FC before joining Ukrainian outfit Metalurh Donetsk. Last December, he joined Championship side Blackpool, but couldn’t make much of a difference as the team finished at the rock bottom of the 24 team competition and were relegated to the third tier of English football.

The high point in his career was a goal in the Old Firm Derby against arch-rivals Rangers and a rock-solid performance against AC Milan in the Champions League. The player has also made 20 appearances for the Ireland national team.

The Nicolas Anelka coached side will start their campaign against FC Pune City on 5th October, 2015.
