ODI series trophy unveiled

http://www.thehindu.com/multimedia/dynamic/00806/TH13_DHONI_806510f.jpg

The two captains – Mahendra Singh Dhoni of India and Alastair Cook of England – unveiled the Airtel Trophy for the five-match one-day series commencing here on October 14.
Dhoni and Cook held aloft the trophy together in the presence of Sharlin Thayil, CEO, AP, Bharti Airtel Ltd.
The two captains did not speak anything at the function which was delayed by more than 75 minutes.
The Trophy, designed by Frazer and Haws, is made of silver with 24 karat gold plating.
It may be recalled that Airtel had been given the sponsorship rights by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for all international matches to be played in India till 2013. The Indian cricket team, minus Gautam Gambhir, had a three-hour long training schedule at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium on Wednesday. The England team which played a warm-up game against Hyderabad on Tuesday, preferred to take a break.

MS Dhoni, the India captain, has said that adjusting to the ICC's revised playing conditions regarding Powerplays will be "tricky" during the ODI series against England, which begins in Hyderabad on October 14. The changes to the playing conditions took effect on October 1, and India and England will be using them for the first time in this series.

Teams will have to start the batting and bowling Powerplays at the beginning of any over between the 16th and the 36th over for a full game. Under the previous playing conditions, teams could begin the Powerplays from the start of the 11th over to the start of the 46th over.

"It's a bit tricky as we have not yet played any match under this new Powerplay," Dhoni told PTI. "It would certainly need a different approach as the second and third Powerplay will now be taken within the 16th and the 40th over.

"Earlier, while chasing, teams would be happy to keep the batting Powerplay for the last five overs. But now we have to make few changes in tactics. It will have different results till we get used to it."

The other major change to the playing conditions is the use of two new balls - one from either end - during an innings. The mandatory change of ball that took place at the end of the 34th over has been done away with. Dhoni said this amendment could reduce the amount of reverse swing because each ball will be only 25-overs-old.

"A bit of swing will definitely be there but there may not be as much reverse swing as we expect in the subcontinent," he said. "Now the reverse swing also depends a lot on the nature of outfield and how you make the ball, but of course legally."

The home ODIs against England are India's first international matches since the poor summer in England, where they lost the Test series 0-4 and the ODIs 0-3. It was primarily the inability of India's bowlers to contain that led to the defeats in the ODIs.

"During the tour of England, performance of the batsmen was impressive. Here we have a different bowling department and it's an opportunity for them to do well in home conditions," Dhoni said. "They have played a lot of IPL but this will be a different ball game.

"We have had a few youngsters who did well in England. Also the wickets were very different out there. For us what matters most is good performance in all three departments."

Powerplay tweaks and end of runners ( New rules by ICC )

West Indies' tour of Bangladesh, which begins with a Twenty20 on October 11, will be the first international series under the ICC's revised playing conditions, which are effective from October 1. The amendments are only applicable to international cricket.

The ICC's cricket committee had made the recommendations after its meeting in London in May and they were passed by the executive board at the annual general meeting in Hong Kong in June.

1. Powerplays (ODIs only)
In a full ODI, the teams can take the bowling and batting Powerplays (five overs each) at the start of an over after 15 overs of an innings have been bowled. They must complete the Powerplays by the 40th over, which means the last block of fielding restrictions must begin in the 36th over. The first ten overs will comprise the mandatory Powerplay. This condition will not apply to innings reduced to fewer than 40 overs.

Under the previous playing conditions, teams were allowed to take the bowling and batting Powerplays at any time after the completion of the tenth over of the innings.

2. Runners (All formats)
A batsman will not be allowed a runner under any circumstances. The batsman can retire hurt and return to bat at a later stage in the innings.

3. Two new balls per innings (ODIs only)
Each fielding team will be given two new balls to be used in alternate overs, one at each end. The mandatory change of the ball after the 34th over of an innings will not take place anymore.

4. Obstructing the field (All formats)
If a fielding team appeals and the umpire feels the batsman has significantly changed his direction without probable cause, while running between the wickets, and obstructed an attempt to run him out, the umpire can give the batsman out for obstructing the field. It is not relevant whether a run out would have been affected or not. The on-field umpires are allowed to consult the third umpire in making the decision. The other circumstances in which a batsman can be out obstructing the field are still applicable.

5. Penalty time (All formats)
This amendment refers to the calculation of the time for which a player cannot bat or bowl because he or she was off the field.

If a player, who still has some unexpired penalty time remaining from a previous absence, is on the field when play is interrupted by bad weather, light or other reasons, the duration of the stoppage will be deducted from the remaining penalty time.

to be continued....

mycricketpredictor
14th October 2011, 04:05 PM
6. Bowler attempting to run out a non-striker before delivery (All formats)
Previously, the bowler could run out a non-striker backing up only if he did so before entering his delivery stride. This meant that as the bowler's back foot landed, the non-striker could move down the pitch before the bowler delivered the ball.

According to a new playing condition, 42.11, "The bowler is permitted, before releasing the ball and provided he has not completed his usual delivery swing, to attempt to run out the non-striker. Whether the attempt is successful or not, the ball shall not count as one of the over. If the bowler fails in an attempt to run out the non-striker, the umpire shall call and signal dead ball as soon as possible."

The umpires shall deem the bowler to have completed his delivery swing once his bowling arm passes the normal point of ball release.

7. Extra time to complete a match (Tests only)
According to clause 16.2.2 of the Test match playing conditions: "The umpires may decide to play 15 minutes (a minimum of four overs) extra time at the scheduled lunch or tea interval of any day if requested by either captain if, in the umpires' opinion, it would bring about a definite result in that session. If the umpires do not believe a result can be achieved no extra time shall be allowed.

"If it is decided to play such extra time, the whole period shall be played out even though the possibility of finishing the match may have disappeared before the full period has expired.

"Only the actual amount of playing time up to the maximum 15 minutes extra time by which play is extended on any day shall be deducted from the total number of hours of play remaining, and the following session of play shall be reduced by the amount of time by which play was previously extended under this clause."

8. Delay of lunch interval when nine wickets down (Tests only)
If a team is nine wickets down at the time of the lunch interval, the break will be delayed by a maximum of 30 minutes. Previously, only tea was delay-able, while lunch was taken even if a team was nine down.

9. Duration of interval between innings (ODIs only)
The minimum interval for an uninterrupted ODI match has been increased from 20 minutes to 30 minutes.

2. Runners (All formats)
A batsman will not be allowed a runner under any circumstances. The batsman can retire hurt and return to bat at a later stage in the innings.

Tendulkar gets back to action :Yahoo:

Sachin Tendulkar was seen practicing at the Bandra-Kurla Complex in Mumbai on Friday, and this should ensure that a billion Indians sleep better at night. It has been just over a month since Tendulkar was ruled out of the one-day leg of the English tour with a toe-injury. Tendulkar spent a couple of hours practicing at the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) Recreation Centre at Bandra. He was also seen jogging lightly on the sidelines of a C.K.Nayudu Under-22 match between Mumbai and Gujarat.

Tendulkar was found to suffer from a recurrence of an inflammation to the bone in his big toe on the right foot on the eve of the first ODI at Cardiff in September. The injury meant that maestro returned from England without managing to get his 100th international ton.

He was also forced to sit out of the Champions League that followed and was seen travelling with his team, the Mumbai Indians, that clinched the title.

Tendulkar will be looking to get in to the groove for the West Indies series at home and the important tour of Australia, later in the year. He could also be targeting a return to the Indian team when England play the fourth ODI, of the return leg, in his own backyard in Mumbai

Whomping No. 2, India sealing a hefty eight-wicket win with a massive 80 balls to spare. Did England mis-read the conditions in deciding to bat first? They surely weren't helped by the disastrous start to their innings, but on a pretty benign surface 237 was well under par. Vinay Kumar's career-best 4 for 30 did most of the damage, but India looked like a unit and were generally good in the field too. And then came the chase. The openers didn't last long but Gambhir and Kohli looked totally at ease, despite the clear aggression from the England bowlers and fielders. They put on an unbroken 209 - a new Indian record for the third wicket - to put their team 2-0 up.. :drums::drums::drums:

Uthappa returns to Twenty20 squad

Robin Uthappa (http://www.espncricinfo.com/india/content/player/35582.html) has been recalled to the Indian Twenty20 squad for the game against England after last having represented the national team more than three years ago, in July 2008. Yusuf Pathan (http://www.espncricinfo.com/india/content/player/32498.html), too, makes a return to the Twenty20 squad, replacing Gautam Gambhir who will be unavailable for the game on October 29 due to his wedding. The other player from the ongoing ODI series missing in the Twenty20 line-up is Parthiv Patel. Uthappa, 25, who plays for Pune Warriors in the IPL, has been in good touch in the lead-up to his selection. He scored a half-century in the final of the BCCI Corporate Trophy and smashed 56 and 132 for India Green in successive innings of the NKP Salve Challenger Trophy, a 50-over domestic tournament.
Yusuf last played for India in June this year on the tour of the West Indies but wasn't picked for the ODI series in England and the ongoing home series against the same opposition. He played for Kolkata Knight Riders in the Champions League Twenty20, and had a good time with the ball in the Challenger Trophy, picked 4 for 25 in one game.
India have retained the same squad for the remainder of the ODI series, which means Harbhajan Singh, who was dropped for the first two ODIs, continues to be left out. India lead the five-match series 2-0, both wins so far being comprehensive.
ODI squad: MS Dhoni (capt and wk), Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, Suresh Raina, Parthiv Patel, Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Praveen Kumar, Vinay Kumar, Umesh Yadav, Manoj Tiwary, Varun Aaron, Rahul Sharma, S Aravind.

Post Match Verdicts:

"It's a long way back from 0 for 2," says Alastair Cook. "We got a lot of 30s and 40s but we know that doesn't win a game. Virat and Gambhir showed us how it's done. Credit to the way they played. There was one half chance off Jade, but apart from that they gave us nothing. We prepared well in the practice games, but we haven't translated that to the main games. We need to score more runs, and our fielding wasn't quite to standard."

"I'm glad we're the winning side, it's really good," says MS Dhoni. "Well of course the series in England wasn't a good one for us, but the team showed their character not to lose their temper and still be sociable on the field," he says pointedly. "We needed a good start, Vinay and Praveen gave us that with early wickets. We never let them get a partnership together. Gautam played brilliantly, Virat is a strokeplayer. Gautam's innings at No. 3 was crucial, the ball was still moving a bit when he got in. The pitch was a bit too placid, I'd prefer a bit more turn. I think a turning wicket is a sporting track in India. But this was a good ODI wicket. For us it's all about winning one game at a time, improving ourselves as cricketers, especially with youngsters in the side."

Kohli is also the Man of the Match, of course. "Especially satisfying playing at my home ground," he says coquettishly. "I was really keen to perform at my home ground, really happy with the way I batted. The pitch did a bit early, the english bowlers were getting some bounce early on, but it was coming on to the bat beautifully. On this kind of wicket if you play good cricket shots you can get boundaries. I'm definitely hungry for more, you never know when you can hit a bad patch. I want to continue my form as much as I can, but stay humble in the process."

Kohli to Kieswetter, OUT, 110.0 kph, bowled! How did that happen? Kohli delivered a full ball outside off which swung into the right-hander. Kieswetter stayed in his crease and tried to chop towards point or third man. He should have been forward to that. The ball took the inside edge right at the bottom of the bat and uprooted leg stump. Kieswetter ended up yorking himself.
