Default 2011 - Malayalam Film Release and Results

2011 Malayalam Cinema - year in review

      Introduction
2011 can be termed as a year of fluctuating fortunes for the Malayalam film industry. The audience on their part were open minded and accepted good attempts along with some of the brainless entertainers. The industry itself scored a number of self goals with a lot of strikes and shutdowns that only helped the other language films (OLF) to strengthen their foothold in Kerala. Stale potboilers were rejected while entertainers were accepted with both hands. Intelligent films were well received as indicated by the huge success of Traffic and SaltNPepper. But there was a clear lack of creative talent in the writing and directorial arena as indicated by the failure of nearly 75% of all films that made it to the theatres. Reputations mattered the least as some of the biggest hits were provided by rank new comers like Rajesh Pillai and Aashiq Abu and some of the biggest names like Fazil and Shaji Kailas delivered astounding duds.

A lot of newer talent appeared on the horizon which gives hope to lovers of Malayalam cinema, some of the names to keep a watch in future are Rajesh Pillai(Traffic), Madhav Ramadasan(Melvilasam), Boban Samuel(Janapriyan), Salim Ahmed(Aadaminde Makan Abu), Aashiq Abu(Saltnpepper), Samir Thahir(Chaappa Kurishu) and K Biju(Doctor Love). While some of the established directors reaffirmed the trust placed on them by the audience and came up trumps in 2011 like Joshi(Christian Brothers), Kamal(Gadhamma & Swapnasanchari), Shafi(Makeupman), Blessy(Pranayam), Ranjith(Indian Rupee) & Priyadarshan (Oru Marubhumikadha). 2011 also saw the upward growth of a few directors who showed promise in their earlier ventures like M Mohanan(Manikyakallu), Vyshakh(Seniors), VK Prakash(Beautiful) and Akku Akbar(Vellaripravinde Changadhi).

      Trends of 2011
      The Good
The Movie lovers of Kerala started accepting well made fresh subjects without any star bias. Success of Traffic, SaltNPepper, Gadhamma,

Beautiful and all indicated a very pleasent change in the viewer tastes of Kerala

      The Bad
Ego clashes among the stake holders of the various associations has brought about a lot of bad blood within the Kerala Film industry and is helping Tamil and Hindi films gain a strong foothold in the theatres of Kerala at the expense of the local Malayalam films. Also the trend of remaking old classics has caught on and we witnessed a terrible attempt with Rathinirvedham. 2012 will see a lot more remakes that are currently in the pipeline.

      The Wierd
Krishnanum Radhayum the creation of Santosh Pandit went on to become a huge hit attracting lot of viewers to the theatres. Ths movie made at a shoe string budget recovered its cost a few times over. It also generated a lot of heated debates about the direction in which Malayalam cinema is headed. The success of this film brought out the most wierdest tastes among Malayalis.

Box Office SummaryBlockbuster 1 (Christian Brothers)

      Star Focus
How did the stars of Malayalam fare in 2011

      1. Mohanlal
Mohanlal had a great year with a good mix of box office success and creative satisfaction. He had 5 releases this year, the first 2 were multistarrers Chirstian Brothers and Chinatown. While Christian Brothers entertained the masses and went on to become the biggest grosser of 2011, Chinatown released to mixed reviews but none the less it attracted the vacation crowd and made a handsome profit for its producers. His next release was Pranayam, while the movie received appreciation for its theme and preformances it did not make a big impact in the box office. But Lal was back to satisfy the family audiences in company with their favorite director Satyan Andikaud with Snehaveedu, the movie opened to mixed reviews for Ramzan but went on to become a success story for its makers. Lal rounded off a successful year with his Priyan film Oru Marubhumikadha that has taken the best opening among Christmas releases, the movie was a worldwide release and has done good business from all release centers.

      Successful films
      Christian Brothers, Chinatown & Snehaveedu

      Failures
      Pranayam

      Verdict still out
      Oru Marubhumi Kadha

      2. Mammootty
Mammootty had a terrible year. Looking back at his glittering career 2011 probably ranks as one of his worst years he neither achieved box office success nor got any challenging role. Mammootty has been known to choose his projects wisely but 2011 he must have had a brain freeze while approving projects. His first release of the year was August 15th, why such a movie was made in the first place is can be answered only by the almighty, it was a thirller that never thrilled, it was a sequel that gave a bad name to the original. The movie sank at the box office without any trace. Mammootty's next release was Doubles for vishu, expectations were high as Mammootty was introducing yet another first time director and history tells us that Mammootty is a very good judge of directorial talent. But here too the result was surprising and Doubles fared badly at the box office and the blame could be pinned at a bad script. Next came a couple of middle stream attempts starring the megastar, The Train & Bombay March 13th 1993, the former directed by reknowned maker Jayaraj and the latter directed by reknowned script writer Babu Janardhanan in his debut as a director. The Train bombed miserably at the box office as it came across as a half baked attempt with a non-existant script. Bombay March 13th 1993 also met with the same fate as the debutant director could not visualize his script into an engaging movie. Mammootty rounded off the year with his Shafi directed venture Venice'ile Vyaparri that has opened to mixed responses. This film is likely to perform better than all his previous releases of 2011 and is still holding on at the box office.

      Successful films
      None

      Failures
August 15, Doubles, The Train, Bombay 13th March 1993

      Verdict still out
      Venice'ile Vyapari

      3. Dilip
Dilip started the year with the wonderful run of his 2010 Xmas Megahit Marykondoru Kunjadu. His first 2 releases of 2011 were the multistarrer hits Christian Brothers and Chinatown. It took till July for Dilip to have next release, infact 2 films Filmstar and Orma Mathram released. The former was a non-starter while the later received some critical acclaim but still met with no success. Then again it took till December for his next release and probably his best movie of the year, Vellaripravinde Changadhi to release. The movie has been appreciated for its content, its performance at the box office will be determined in the coming weeks. Over all not a great year for Dilip but he has some very promising releases up his sleeve.

      Successful films
      Christian Brothers, China Town

      Failures
      Filmstar, Orma Mathram

      Verdict still out
      Vellaripravinde Changadhi

      4. Prithviraj
Prithviraj had 9 releases to his credit this year, but 6 of them bit the dust at the box office. Only the Ranjit directed Indian Rupee and Mohan directed Manikyakallu succeeded at the box office. Santhosh Sivan directed Urumi was appreaciated for its technical qualities but its heavy budget prevented it from becoming a financial success. City of God was a different attempt but never took off. Veetilekulla Vazhi was an off beat film that never really reached its target audiance. His first release of the year Arjunan Sakshi was a failure at the box office and the highly hyped Teja bhai & Sons fell at the onam box office sweepstakes. while the cameo in Makeupman was noticed and the one in Manushyamrigham went unnoticed. Overall a bad year for Prithviraj.

      Successful films
      Manikyakallu, Indian Rupee, Makeupman

      Failures
Arjunan Sakshi, Urumi, City of God, Manushyamrigham, Veetilekkulla Vazhi, Teja Bhai and sons

      5. Jayaram
Jayaram had a decent year by way of having some successful films along with some box office duds. Among his 7 releases this year 4 met with various levels of success and 3 of them bit the dust. Seniors, Chinatown and Makeupman were Multistarrer hits for Jayaram, his reunion with director Kamal in Swapnasanchari was appreciated by the family audiences.

      Successful films
      Seniors, Makeupman, Chinatown & Swapnasanchari

      Failures
Kudumbhasree Travels, Ulagam Chuttum Valibhan, Nayika

      6. Suresh Gopi
Suresh Gopi had a silent year and among his 4 releases this year Christian Brothers was a blockbuster while Melvilasam was critically acclaimed. Collector and Venshankupol sank without a trace.
      Successful films
      Christian Brothers, Melvilasam
      Failures
      Collector, Venshankhupol

      7. Kunchako Boban
Kunjako boban had 7 releases, he had a satisfactory 2011 continuing from his return starting from 2010. 4 of the 7 films that he acted in were successful and he had significant roles in all his movies.

      Successful films
Traffic, Makeupman, Dr. Love, Three Kings

      Failures
      Sandwich, Race, Sevens

      8. Jayasurya
Jayasurya had 6 releases in 2011 and t can be said to be a successful year for him ad his films were successful at the box office as well as he got a few challenging roles. The highlight of his year was VK Prakash's Beautiful in which he gave a good performance as a wheelchair ridden character. The movie is a success and his role was appreciated by all. Janapriyan too was a well appreciated film. While Payyans his first release of the year bombed.

      Successful films
      Janapriyan, Three Kings, Beautiful

      Failures
      Payyans, The Train, Shankaranum Mohananum
