Ithu ipozhathe Malayalam Television industryude scenario vachulla ente kurachu observations anu. Inviting your take on this issue..your views,predictions, counter points, suggestions and so on.. According to the Indian Readership Survey, Kerala seems to be the state with maximum population of television viewers. Perhaps that must be the reason why we have more than 20 channels airing our TV sets which is proportionally, ahead of any other states in India. And now, more than a dozen Malayalam channels are in an array, soon ready to kick off. Manorama Vision (GEC), Manorama Yuva (youth), Janapriya (GEC), Zee Malayalam (GEC), Raj Musix, Raj News, ETV Malayalam (GEC), Mathrubhumi (GEC/News), NTV, Kaumudi, Mangalam (News), Sanaathan TV, Darshana TV (devotional),proposed movie, news and kids channels from Sun and business channel from Kairali..!!!(Its doubtful whether all listed channels will come into existence. But at least half a dozen among the lot will surely take off this year). But why Malayalam?!!! A Malayalam channel carries all sorts of risks like small media market, rigid government rules and regulations, low ad rates, high production costs etc. Is this just for a line extension or business diversification? Or to extend their rivalries to the other business segments too? Or as they may suggest: "to serve the potential Malayalee audience..to enrich themselves and others...to satisfy their craving desire towards art..culture..blah.blah..blah..!! Well, If we conduct a SWOT analysis of the problem, the scenario will be more clear. For time being let us concentrate on 'Threats' only: 1.Ethra valiya establishmentinte under aayalum break even point cross cheyyan mininum 3-4 years vendi varum. And a couple more to become profitable (only if the business goes steady) 2.Asianetinum Suryakkum ulla pioneering advantage cross cheyyan 10years old Kairali, 7years old Jeevan and 5years old Amritakkum ithu vare saadhichittilla. In spite of offering the best, innovative and hi-q programmes, Kairali and Amrita haven't succeeded in pushing their market share up to 2 figures!!! 3.Until the TRPs rise consistently,they can't impose much changes on ad rates. ad revenue satisfactory allenkil athu complete operationsine thanne affect cheyyum. 4.And of course, competition..both with the market leaders and the infants). Satellite rights issue: Afterall, nammude ettavum valiya concern films thanne anallo..oru double edged sword pole anu ipol satellite rightsinte situation. 4 years munpu vare oru superstar filmnte highest paid rate below 50 lakhs ayirunnu. Athu ipol 3 croresinte aduthethi. Ee situationil Ini baaki channels koodi varunnathode oru varshathinullil athu production costineyum overtake cheythu povum!!! And initially the channels won't be able to meet the costs (ad rates can't be hiked on an irregular basis) which automatically fall on our shoulders in the form of pay channels, rise in DTH/cable subscription etc. Literally, films produce cheyyunnathu thanne miniscreen cinema ayittu marum. In the sense, the maker's will be more concerned about the tastes and interests of the household viewers since their films become profitable even before its theatrical release through satellite rights sales..!!
