      Odiyan de biggest plus according to me is
      1. Mohanlal enna SUPERSTAR
      2. Odiyan enna nadan myth... this was a sure factor for it overcoming the bad initial WOM
      3. Marketing created unprecedented hype... add this to the above 2 points it simply worked

      There is a case of Fans then and now


      Devasuram & Spadikam were seen as class films...Spadikam had high octane action sequence..still the story telling was classy. Araam Thampuraan was a classy entertainer like Kilukkam which has action & punchlines unlike Kilukkam which depends on comedy.

      Narasimham is perhaps the movie that changed the image of Mohanlal to a MASS AVATAR. A formula Tamil/Telugu films opted for. Since then, his so called hardcore fans just want to see him doing such movies and those movies only. Narasimham can be termed as a MASS MOVIE cause it heavily depends on Mohanlal's star image and glorifying it. You can see the movies which makers claim or tag as MASS MOVIE has the same formula. Onnaman, Praja, Ravanaprabhu, Thandavam, Naaturajaavu, Ali Bhai, Red Chillies, Xtian Bros, Twenty 20 and the latest Pulimurugan. More than depending on a strong script and execution, it was all about presenting the Star Image of Mohanlal. The ones synced well with audience worked well...the ones which didn't failed!!! The common feature is all these movies pulled a huge initial which inspires makers to come up with such formulaic works. Nowdays many call Devasuram, Spadikam as Mass Movies which they are not.

      Odiyan was never a MASS MOVIE (going by the abv paragraph)....I don't like to call it a CLASSY WORK too (Opinions differ). I am sure VASK is sensible enuf to understand this. But by projecting Odiyan as a MASS MOVIE, he earned the HUGE INITIAL with the HYPE & HOOLA. The pre release buzz also was based on the unique nature of the theme. Still the idea of projecting the movie as a Mass Movie with Peter Hein stunts were completely for commercial purpose. No Doubts regarding that. Now can you show me a clip where VASK justifies his MASS claims?? Since he got an initial from the fans, he is projecting the real image of the movie and using CLASS as a tag. This marketing tactic is entirely targeted at family audience. Now they are coming for this movie and with low/negative expectations, they started to like/love the movie. My family members are one such example. They come up with the question regarding why there was a negativity surrounding the movie post release. This positive energy is now being seen as post first weekend crowd!!! I seriously believe the whole marketing tactic was planned and executed well. I am not sure whether the same tactic can be used by VASK for another film of his...even if it stars Mohanlal.

      VASK smartly marketed the movie to success....If there was no marketing brain...How many of us would have been excited to go for 4:30 AM show with a title like Odiyan from a newcomer director?....I am sure very few!!!

      With this tremendous success, I am sure Malayalam Cinema has opened new doors to marketing and promotion which is a good sign IMO!!! I believe Odiyan is a game changer in that regard.

      Do you think a sales person markets his product by only telling the truth...? Menon knows how to market his product and he knows he can easily create a frenzy for a movie like Odiyan by saying the things he said pre-release. Nammal athokke vishwasikkanam ennu pulli paranjo...illallo...? Public and especially fans athokke vellam thodaathe vizhungi veluppaan kaalathum paathiraathrikkum idichu keri padam kandu...ithellaam cheythu kazhinjittu pinne angere theri vilichittu enthu kaaryam...

      The marketing was good for Odiyan but after effect we can see it in next big budget movies.People may shyaway from going to theatres and they won't believe in trailers and preshow talks any more. Menon tried to advertise the Odiyan movie like fairandlovely and colgate.

      Agree that the box officr sucess of odiyan is due to marketing but this cannot be easily replicated for other movies:
      Odiyan had a unique theme which was able to evoke interest.
      Mohanlalinte hyped movies generally box officeil disappoint cheyyarondu despite huge openings. Exceptions are odiyan and pulimurugan.
      Casanova, fraud, peruchazhi, velipaadu pusthakam are example of failures.
      Only thing which will change is that the true power of the gulf market has been shown wiyh odiyan and kochunni which will lead to more worldwide releases bevoming the norm
