Theater: CBE Kanakadhara
Show: 6:30 pm Status: 80% Rafi Mecartin are synonymous with setting up usual storylines in an unusual milieu, be it Punjabi House, Superman, Thenkasippattanam, etc., so when the film started with three friends singing a song, getting murdered after the song, the second generation of the friends escaping from the villain's clutches, I was scared that it will follow the predictable path of some of the 80s' Hindi films where the sons met singing the same song and taking their revenge on the common villain. Thankfully, what follows is a story oft told yes, but cliched, predictable, or bored, it's not one bit!!! China Town is a comic riot that malayalam cinema has not so often witnessed before. Yes, there have been better comedy films but to see three of the best of the ilk come together and create comic hysteria scene after scene is a delicious prospect! Nothing much to say about the storyline of the film except that it's the gud ol' revenge saga told in a sumptuously entertaining manner, but i've seen pages and articles and reviews written about 'leaving ur brains home and come and enjoy in the cinema hall' for some undeserved films, but China Town is one film which fits that billing to the T for me! It's all about the actors that make it happen here, not the storyline, and yes the uncanny knack of the director duo to string something new to an oft told narrative is omnipresent here, but when things get out of their hand at times in the second half, it is the stars that hold the film from collapsing! And deservedly so, my short take is more on the actors who make the film the riot that it is! Don't know what it is with Rafi Mecartin but the 'old Lalettan', the entertainment king, was seen in 'Halo' and now in China Town. Many others have in between, tried and failed, but RM have brought the comic best of Lalettan like no one else in the post 2000 era when he turned more into superheroism. Forget the comic timing, how can one forget the cool steps of 'Kadukittu Varutha' from Halo, it was the gud ol' graceful Lalettan that one thought had been lost forever! And the 'Aaaraanu Koottu' song in CT just postinterval, is worth the admission fee for any Lalettan fan...ask me, i am watching the film again just for that dance ! I actually doubt he 'had it' before the shoot of the song, coz seldom have i seen him in such gay abandon in a song before! It's a paisa vasool performance from Lalettan for a die hard fan like me...and the interval sequence had my wife whistling in the theatre!!! What Priyadarsan used to do with Lalettan in the late 80s and throughout the 90s, Rafi-Mec has done post 2000, though not upto the former's level. Jayaram is a bit of a letdown, some of his mannerisms does evoke the vintage Jayaram, but his characterisation and performance seems to be the weakest link amongst the three, but still he holds his own against two of the best comedy actors that malayalam cinema has seen! The 'Maamaattikkuttiyamma' wig that he has been saddled with, maybe to make him look young, does not help either! Also, the best lines and moments of the film go to either Lalettan or Dileep. Though he is fine in the role, I couldn't help but picture Mukesh in there! The star value would've been less, but the impact, definitely better! Now to Dileep, to tell that he is a blast would be underwhelming....he brings the house down right from his entry and till the end, he maintains the tempo...especially the second half, he's at his best in the intoxicated/inebriated mood! Thanks a ton for the laughs, Mr. Janapriyan! Suraj is back in form here after a few lacklustre outings. Though he starts off awkwardly, he picks up and some of the one liners are hilarious, esply when he and his assistants are in full monty and he goes 'ithokke enthonnedei.' Me n my wifey were laughing for the next 5 minutes and still can't stop when we think of that scene. Other members of the cast do their bit that is required for an entertainer! Technically too, everything is just about neat. Jassie Gift's songs resemble some 90s hindi tunes, but go well with the flow of the film. DINO'S TAKE: Leave ur brains at home, in the true sense, and get ready for a laugh riot! Last edited by DINODAZZLIN; 04-16-2011 at 11:18 AM. |
