“If everything is imperfect in this imperfect world, love is the most perfect in its perfect imperfection.” Outstanding...Ingmar Bergman deserves something out of this world for making this classic  We experience poetry on screen while Bergman weaves an epic filled with imagery and sublime/not so sublime messages. Bergman asks many questions. Is there life after death? Does god exist? If he does, why doesn't he answer prayers? Or the sole purpose in life is to enjoy each moment dearly? Portrayal of the dark ages in Europe is gripping and realistic. Cinematography was just awesome. Its an exercise in allegorical fantasy and Bergman does it with style. He departs from realism and called it an extension of realism.Grand, soul-searching conflicts are described with imposing ornamentation rooted in Christian symbolism, ranging from Death himself, to religious processions, to the decorative Medieval artwork appearing throughout the picture. The dialogue feels heavily dramatic, written with all the splendor and control of epic poetry. With this film Bergman provides us with the ultimate intellectual check-mate. Verdict- Stuff that calls for a standing ovation Rating- 9/10 __________________
