Indian government has asked the social networking sites like Google, Facebook to put a curb on offensive material.

In a meeting with representatives of the sites, Telecom & IT Minister Kapil Sibal stress the need of manual monitoring mechanism before it goes live. The executives from the company were skeptical of how to control the millions of user's post from India. The executives had not assured anything to the government in this matter.

The issue arise because of obscene images of political leaders like congress president Sonia Gandhi, PM Manmohan Singh etc.

The government demand to screen for every post is almost impossible.

"The Indian government doesn't believe in censorship," Sibal said in response to a query from TOI and ruled out any coercion. "It believes in self-regulation," he added.

As reported in TOI, a senior official said. "So far, they have refused to cooperate with us. We have not decided what action we can take although the law empowers us," the source added. "We are engaging with them to evolve a mechanism so that no one is offended and we do not have to resort to censorship," another source said.
