Agneepath
Theatre : Sathyam Cinemas, Chennai Date & Time : 30th Jan 2012, 6:30 PM Status : 100% Agneepath, a classic movie which fetched Amitabh his second national award in 1991. Now remaking such a movie without losing its soul is indeed a herculean task. But Karan Malhotra & the producer Karan Johar has succeeded in that task to a great extent by providing pitch-perfect entertainment which matches upto the original! Basic plot of the movie is the same with some changes in the characterization, the deep vendetta of Vijay Dinanath Chauhan towards Kancha for executing his father so immorally in front of him... Karan Malhotra requires a standing ovation for the grand making of the movie without losing the soulfulness of the original by extracting some really scintillating performances in the recent times with such consummate casting! The screenplay was clever at most of the times with excellent dialogues... Hrithik Roshan puts all his heart into the character of Vijay with vengeance stamped all over him and delivers a truly riveting performance. Comparisons with Bachan are obvious, but Roshan has pulled it off so convincingly in his own flair.. Rishi Kapoor, as Rauf Lala, an out-n-out baddie was a delightful revelation delivering a haunting performance which is one of his most memorable roles... The boy who played Vijay's childhood did a commendable job. But its Sanjay Dutt who steals the show with his immaculate portrayal of Kancha, redefining the character to new elevations with bulked-up physique which reminds of Kane and the capriciously sinister expressions which is an absolute treat to watch on the big screen! Watchout for his introduction scene which will bring on goosebumps all over you! The production values were utmost impressive with excellent art-work & convincing recreation of an era! Technical side too was outstandingly colourful with astonishing cinematography with ingenious lighting arrangements... Editing was brilliant by which there weren't much of any dull moments for a movie with a duration of more than 150 minutes. Music & BGM was in synch with movie. Another highlight of the movie was the much celebrated item song of the year 'Chikni Chameli' where Katrina oozes all her raw sensuousness with sizzling movements ... Even the over-the-top raw action sequences soaked in blood was another high point of the movie... Coming to low points of the movie, the romantic track between Kaali & Vijay looks forced which slackens the pace of the movie a bit. Om Puri's character was quite underdeveloped as the moral guardian of Vijay. The character of Rauf Lala's mute son was too unnecessary which serves no purpose to the plot. Priyanka Chopra was just okay, eventhough she goes too overborard at times. Nonetheless her looks & costumes were ravishing as usual. All in all, its a fitting tribute or homage to the era of high voltage action-packed revenge drama with a smart screenplay and intelligent making from Karan Malhotra which stays faithful to the original! Rating - 8/10 Verdict - Typical Desi Revenge Drama At Its Vintage Best! Trade Verdict - Blockbuster!
