Galleria Cinema – Screen 1 – Dubai Date – Friday, 03 / 02 / 2012 Show Timing – 10.30pm Status – Full House It’s been a long time since I have logged in to SS. Haven’t had the convenience to access for a long time and then got quite busy with other engagements. Don’t wish to get into the history of my absence from SS and let me get into what I am here for…..the review of the much awaited “CASANOVVA”. Prelude The much awaited movie, the most talked about movie, the highest budgeted movie from the Malayalam movie industry. What made this movie much awaited - The genius Mohanlal, acclaimed writer duo Bobby – Sanjay, a director with so much of promise after UT and Notebook; Roshan Andrews (this is not the way he is spelt, but I don’t care), high budget, exotic locales and long time in the making. What more do you want…..expectations will obviously sky rocket with such a powerful combination. What would people contemplate? – One landmark movie which would do earth shattering business and probably show the fellow industry men that if you have a good script and team, budgets can never be a restraint. Key notes I do not intend to be a judge here, but would sincerely lay down my thoughts after having watched this magnum opus. First and foremost, the script by Bobby –Sanjay for CASANOVVA never really required this kind of a whopping budget. Except for a few luxurious cars, good looking dames, choppers / private jets it did not give me as a viewer something to really boast about. Secondly, this is not a movie that Roshan is capable of directing. I do not doubt the potential of the director here. But this is definitely not his cup of tea. He needs to realize where his strength in story telling lies and focus on that. A high budget movie of this magnitude is not the ideal play ground where he can experiment. I would like to specifically make references to people like Blessy, Joshi etc. who stick very well to their strong points while making their movies. As I mentioned earlier, experiments are good but not at this budget. The Roshan touch is very visible in the second half where he unravels the romantic track of Mohanlal and Shreya. Thirdly, the flamboyance of the character CASANOVVA could have been visualized in a much better manner than what has been shown. Mohanlal in the blue and red costume with a flower in his hand symbolizing Lord Krishna and the first song with all the bikini clad ladies around was totally uncalled for. The crowd was totally taken aback seeing this and would never have expected this from a director like Roshan. He totally lost the plot there which I believe could have been done with much more charm. Roshan as a director looses his momentum right there. Good Mohanlal – He looks smart and energetic after shedding lot of weight. He has essayed his character with élan and the flamboyance that is required. Well, who the hell doubts his abilities? Shreya – Has done a good job, much better than what I anticipated. Riyaz Khan – Has got good role in this movie and has carried it off well The 4 newcomers – Have essayed their roles quite well given the possibility provided in the script Hey Manohara theerame – Good song and some good dance moves. Rocked big time Background score – Good and is in line with the mood of the movie and is very catchy. Camera – Has done a good job, the visuals have a very rich look adding to the grandeur Glimpses of the Roshan that we all know especially in the second half Action sequences leading towards the climax Bad Length of the movie – Could have trimmed the movie by another 10 – 15 minutes Climax – Should have really planned something different. Seems Roshan wanted to get this off his head. Jagathy – Talent wasted reminiscent of SAJ Sanjana episode – Totally unwanted Script from Sanjay – Bobby Direction by Roshan Ugly Mohanlal in the Lord Krishna costume Intro song of Mohanlal with the dames The budget If the first two elements in this section were not pictured, I am sure most of the negative impression it created could have been wiped off. Such is the deleterious impact it has had on the movie. Verdict It is a visual treat for most parts, but then visual treat alone does not make all time favourite movies. The movie is good but in parts. CASANOVVA will be remembered for a long time but to me it is a golden opportunity wasted by Roshan and team. The thrills and frills packaged in CASANOVVA fail to ignite the spirit of the movie goer in me. But to underline, CASANOVVA is no trash by any means which needs to be besmirched to the level it has been. An afterthought that came about after watching this movie – “This movie should have been directed by someone like Anwar Rasheed who is adept in delivering a good package” – Strictly my thought I am not sure where CASANOVVA will end up in the hit charts due to the budget it has incurred and will be interesting to see the final figure it reaches after the awe-inspiring initial collection it has garnered along with the remake / satellite rights.
