Jeethu Joseph's script - tight, elegant and brilliant. nammal orikkalum chinthikkillatha vazhikaliloode ulla sancharam. some lines were so powerful, that it had mass impact. Don't want to mention them here.
Camera - Initial shots brilliant aayrnnu. cut cheyyathe charactere follow cheyyunna alpam scenes. but oru interval thottu satyam paranjal framework shradikkan polum kazhinjilla - because i was awed by the onscreen performances and the story. need to watch it again to see how Jeethu and Sujith constructed those scenes.
Mohanlal - oh my; how can you underestimate this man? This role demanded him and him only. Nobody else can do the bedroom scene, the day after scene at breakfast, the brutal scenes at the police station and the climax meeting with Varuns parents.
these 4 scenes in a single movie - must be included in film classes. how the subtle nuances in acting can be brought without any flashy costumes or thrilling bgm or heavy movements and camera angles. Salute legend, salute. this movie will be talked about for generations.
Supporting Cast - Meena - what a comeback. oru ochapadum bahalavum illathe, cool aayi vannu, nannayi abhinayichu and she walked away with the biggest grosser in malayalam. she had the perfect looks - i can't imagine anyone doing that role (4 yrs munne aarnnel ee role okke automatically lakshmi rai cheythene, kulamakkiyene). Her expressions were cute and her acting skills were displayed in the pivotal scenes in the film just before interval. Meena - you're an underrated actress in malayalam. but no more.
Kalabhavan Shajon - what a revelation! Howw did this man transform like this from being an ordinary comedian? The scene where he turns back to look at the younger daughter - brilliant acting. Choose your roles wisely man, you can go a long way.
Siddique and Asha Sarath - nothing need to be said about the former, great actor always and this role was super safe in his hands. Asha on the other hand started off bit shaky, but ended up doing her best. glad to hear her beautiful voice. (I had taken part in many of her radio shows back in the 90s in UAE and wondered why she never dubbed for Kunkumapoovu).
All the other supporting cast did their job perfectly. added more quality to the film.
Music and BGM - exactly what you need for a film like this. not loud, not hip - goes in perfect sync with the script. Nizhale is thrilling in its own ways.
Direction - Do I need to praise Jeethu Joseph now? His brilliance in vision can be judged from one scene alone - towards the end of the second song - the police jeep arriving and how Georgekutty saves his daughter. Cinematic execution at its best!! Jeethu started off very slow - establishing every single character and we feel a connection with them by the time the movie ends.
The only negative IMO - since the movie was set in Rajakkad/Thodupuzha area, Jeethu could have used the slang from that place. An xtian family calling their father Acha is not a norm there. Jeethu might have kept the "achadi bhasha" so that it caters to everyone equally and doesn't make this a slang oriented movie.
I read terrific reviews, all over. critics, fans, movie lovers, media. And seeing the crowd at the theater and sold out tickets, my expectations went higher. I was tensed whethere i would like the film. I was tensed that all these people, most of them who are held up so tight in their life and one scene of boredom can make them walk away - will end up frustrated due to the slow pace of the film or lack of "terrific" happenings in the first half. But, if after all this, if every single person in the theater applauded the movie at the end - THATS WHAT YOU CALL A BRILLIANT CINEMA.
10/10 - Don't miss this. recommend to everyone. Watch it multiple times.
