      Cool Qarib Qarib Singlle

      Qarib Qarib Singlle

      Venue: Ibn Battuta Novo Cinemas
      Status: Around 70%

      Storyline

35 year old single widowed Jaya (Parvathy) is subject to a life of routine. Hard working, always helping others, not willing to look at new suitors, she curiously decides to register on a dating site. There she decides to befriend a polite sounding man, Yogi (Irffan) and even agrees to go on a journey with him, to meet his exes!

      Direction and script

In QQS, director Tanuja Chandra has brought together two unlikely candidates for a romance, Irffan and Parvathy, and developed such a natural and organic relationship. It's so refreshing to see how two individuals actually get attracted to each other sans the unrealistic, filmy scenarios presented today in Hindi Cinema. It's through conversations, the quirkiness of the respective individuals and the small arguments and separations. The trip seems an illogical diversion for such a relationship to develop, but the talent of the lead artistes and hilarious situations ensures we don't think about this illogical situation so much. As the film progresses, we are taught in a gentle manner to let go of past relationships. I was impressed by the open ended ending and that the relationship is not obviously romantic in nature. It also shows the difference between men and women, as when we find out later that Jaya has an interest of her own in taking the trip, the reaction of Yogi is relatable and typical!

      Performances

When I heard that Parvathy had signed her first Hindi film, I had a feeling the movie would be good, given her selective nature. She is in it from start to finish and has blended in tremendously well. Her expressions, comic timing and her quirky portrayal of the character makes Jaya a character we grow to love. It's such a natural tour de force and something I hope that all those overrated Bollywood actresses get to watch and study. While Irffan Khan is as effective as ever as Yogi, nailing the portrayal of an outrageously talkative, irritating, yet lovable rogue. Their 'chemistry' is not the usual one where we expect sparks to fly but at the end of the film, we are sold by them together as a couple. A special mention to the makeup artist and costume designer for Parvathy. These aspects, make the actress look drop dead gorgeous....

      Overall

I was entertained throughout by QQS, though the second half does lag somewhat at points. Though the premise seems questionable, QQS is elevated by some terrific performances and natural, realistic situations. Go watch it with your loved one!

      Verdict: Paisa Vasool
      Rating: 3.75/5

      thanks
Don't feel bad if people remember you only when they need you.
Feel privileged that you are like a candle that comes to their mind when there is a darkness.
