      Default Koode

      Status: About 60-70%

Koode is easily the most haunting and moving Malayalam pic I've seen this year. Anjali Menon has shown remarkable subtlety and restraint in handling a number of sensitive issues from teenage dreams, nostalgia to childhood abuse. Her style of leaving a lot of things unsaid and allowing emotions and music to move scenes forward has helped Koode become her best work yet. It's truly remarkable how Anjali tugs at the heartstrings showcasing teenage love and rejection, familial love and conflict, childhood dreams and relationships. Aided aptly by a beautiful Raghu Dixit musical score and some sumptous cinematography, Koode never felt long or overly boring...when it ended, I felt so sad that this was the end!

Koode above all else is a journey into the lives of three flawed yet real characters. It's like a river where each ones' true self is slowly peeled away. There's an abundance of joy, sadness and romance and yet each comes up in a non-linear way when you're least expecting it. The main theme here seems to be the circle of life, Joshua's parents trying to bond with street children so they can see a young Joshua and Jenny all over again, Joshua's delight in seeing the birth of Jenny and eventually his own daughter towards the end of the film. Where there could have easily been over-dramatic scenes, Anjali has opted for natural resolutions of conflicts....Joshua never acts out of character even when he encounters situations where a macho side could have been revealed, Sophie's character is one of quiet strength, making her decision to move on from her rough and tough family, in her own space and time. And Jenny never asks for sympathy or demands love, but is happy with the simple things in life, like home made food! It's such a relief and pleasure to see characters who behave naturally and realistically reminiscent of the old Sathyan Anthikad Sreeni movies of the 1980s.

Coming to performances, each and every artist including Renjith, Atul Kulkarni, Devan etc has done full justice to their roles. But the true plaudits are for Prithviraj, who depicts Joshua in a raw, honest and dignified manner, and gets so much into the skin of his character that you'll wonder, why has Mollywood not done justice to his talents? This is a career best role which deserves nothing less than a State Award next year. Parvathy is superb as the quietly dignified Sophie and speaks more with her expressions than dialogues. Nazriya has not lost any of her bubbly charm since Bangalore Days and is truly hilarious as Jenny.

If there's any movie you can't afford to miss today, it's Koode.
