      Default SARKAR ~ An Opinion

Venue ~ E Square (Carnival), University Road, Pune
      Screen ~ 04
      Showtime ~ 08:30 AM
      Status ~ 50% (Max)

This is my fourth Vijay movie in a big screen after Thuppakki, Jilla & Kaththi and the reason why I went ahead is mainly because he is associating with Murugadass. Eventhough I am not expecting any breakthrough performance from the lead actor, I expect the movie to entertain like the other two.

Those who can recall Surya's portion from Aayitha Ezthuthu, its kinda Sarkar's short film. One of the highlights of the movie is that Murugadass didn't put any unnecessary sequence for peppy romance and thus we don't have to bear with Keerthy Suresh. But to compensate that plus, he is unable to get a clear idea where and how place the songs & action sequences which syncs well with the narration. It all looked like a formula of all those Tamil mainstream movies you have seen n number of times. Now getting into the movie, it starts off with Sundar (Vijay) flying all way from USA in his private jet to cast his vote. A short build up is given where all the companies are frightened to death because he is considered to be a corporate criminal who uproots his opponents. Things change once he realize someone else has cast his vote and he takes on the system. Unlike Thuppakki & Kaththi, Murugadass reaches his plot without spending much time (Oh Yeah!! there is an intro song). From the peripheral view, you will find this movie as a new gen Shankar movie or a slightly rehashed Kaththi version where one man takes on the entire system by creating a revolution. There is an poorly established romance followed by some well written face to face moments with poorly choreographed action sequences in between. But if you take a deeper plunge, the makers have a clear motive with this movie. For the lead actor, he claims through his character that "The biggest failure of democracy is lack of good opposition". Also he claims in an encrypted manner that no matter how big or rich he is, he knows that soul of Tamil Nadu. Its not surprising that the producers of the movie ie Sun Network readily agreed to produce this movie. After all, the villain's party is AIMMK . One of the finest moment was Pala Karuppaiah's character claims that its nice that he learnt Tamil while reading a letter. No prizes in guessing on whom the dig was meant for.

If I take this movie and dissect intro two halves, the first half was entertaining and moving at a breakneck speed despite its lack of freshness. But the second half is mixture of the movies carrying the same theme and the biggest minus was the film didn't the ARM-Vijay highlight moment like the synchronized shootout scene from Thuppakki or Pipeline Revolution from Kaththi. Also lack of strong villain was another big minus. Finally the movie ended up in a rather lackluster note with a poorly choreographed fight scene. The only time the second half oozed some energy was with the entry of Varalaxmi Sarathkumar.

Regarding performances...I seriously don't want to comment on Vijay's acting skills. But thank god, he didn't irritate me like Jilla & Theri. Still Kaththi is his best performance considering his scale. Keerthy Suresh really had NOTHING to do and was a glamorous version of Esha Deol's character from Aayitha Ezhuthu. Yogi Babu had max 2-3 scenes and did well. But Varalaxmi scored every moment she was there. Pala Karuppaih as the antagonist did justice to his role while Radha Ravi reminded me of Jagathy Sreekumar's chaarcter from Lion.

Technically, Girish Gangadharan scored with his frames in his first big budget movie. The production scale is grand and songs were lavishly shot. But the action choreography was absolutely poor. A R Rahman's songs were below average and BGM was kinda OK OK!! Its pathetic to see and hear OMG Ponne song from ARR.

Overall, the movie is entertaining with nothing new to offer. If I have put the films of ARM-Vijay acco to preference, it will be Thuppakki>Kaththi>>>Sarkar. But the political move is crystal clear from Ilayathalapathy to Thalapathy!!
