      Default Joseph ~ An Opinion

      Venue ~ INOX, Amanora, Pune
      Screen ~ 06
      Showtime ~ 09:00 AM
      Status ~ Less than 50%

Despite being a successful venture, I didn't like M Padmakumar's Shikkar. I felt he didn't have a grip over his story telling and the first half was a big mess. But the film did have strong moments of emotion (scenes featuring Samthurkani) which synced well with audience. Maybe Kanal's failure was the lack of emotional quotient. The highlight of Joseph is the director was able to go back to 80s & 90s where the makers take time to establish their character, both physically and emotionally, so that the further actions of the protagonist and the supporting cast can be justified. Drishyam & Varathan are big examples in recent times. But if the contend is not good enough, the film will become a disaster.

Joseph starts off in a familiar lines which we have seen in B Unnikrishnan's Villain & Grandmaster, where the protagonist who carries a baggage of failed marriage and how his profession played a key role in the failure. Then one fine day, he is forced to take over a case which he cannot deny. Hearing this, its pretty similar to "Villain". While B Unnikrishnan didn't make his lead character an alcoholic, Padmakumar added a cliche in doing so. Also to display his authority in the profession, Padmakumar spent almost 15 minutes before the title was shown. Unlike his previous ventures, Padmakumar was able to engage the audience in doing so. He presented 3 different phases of Joseph which played a key role throughout the movie. Now this is the trick which very few possess. They tend to go overboard in detailing which makes the viewing difficult. Even with 3 songs playing almost 5 minutes interval in between, none turned out to be an obstacle but worked well for the movie. Now there is no "OMG" moment during the film which startles us during narration even when the suspense breaks out. But the movie was quite an engrossing except for some 20 odd minutes post interval where I felt the director could have added up some pace. I also felt the logic of the movie worked out ell eventhough I couldn't agree with the final moment (despite being well justified).

Joju George's performance is the highlight of the movie. Many might think this is a role that should have gone to Mohanlal but I don't think he could have justified the younger Joseph with his current figure & age (unless taken during Odiyan time). The fact that made me happy was Joju delivered a sparkling performance when he got an opportunity to play a strong lead character who has to undergo through various emotions. I never felt he went overboard during any time of the movie. If I am not wrong, this is the best performance from a lead character this year (until now). He was supported well by male supporting characters comprising of Dileesh Pothen, Irshad etc. Also the new faces who played the roles of his buddies did well. I felt the performance from the female cast (all newcomers) were below average.

The songs were fine and syncs well with the mood of the movie and narration. I felt some slow mo shots looked a bit weird. The pacing of the movie was fine & even.

I believe Joseph is the finest work from Padmakumar till date and even with normal expectations, I don't think you will be disappointed by this emotional investigative drama with a surprisingly brilliant performance from Joju George.

I don't think Big Ms can do further with this role. Mohanlal has handled a similar complex role in Villain. If he has done Joseph, I don't think many will appreciate the movie as its receiving now. Similarly for Mammootty
