      Default Seethakaathi ~ An Opinion

Venue - Cinepolis, Seasons Mall, Pune
      Audi - 09
      Showtime - 06:30 PM
      Status - 80%

A lazy Sunday pushed me to Seethakaathi despite hearing mixed opinions. Also the 100 bucks ticket is another reason why I didn't mind to risk my time & energy. But I don't want to hide the fact that I was pretty interested to watch the second released venture from Balaji Tharaneetharan who gave us the rib ticking Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom. The promos and the trailer were interesting too.

The movie starts of showing glimpses of a talented stage artiste named Ayya Aadhimoolam (Vijay Sethupathy) who is fading away from the world of art due to lack of audience interest towards drama. The stage is set after the demise of Ayya where he becomes a sensation as well influence to many others.

Ayya is shown as a typical stage actor who is 100% dedicated towards the art and never compromised for a few bucks. Initially we feel that Balaji has opted for a cliched route by showing the financial issues of both Ayya as well as his drama troupe until the sudden unexpected demise. Now thats not the spoiler cause here is where the film actually starts.

Balaji uses Ayya as a metaphor in his fantasy drama to show the struggle of real talent to survive with utmost dedication in the commercialized world. Ayya has his own set of principles which he will never compromise even during the worst phase of his life. The character Parasuram is shown as his conscious who helps to make decisions for Ayya. The film takes a dig at producers, directors and actors (specially Telugu & Tamil actors who possess zero talent) who destroys the sanctity of art for a bagful of money. Infact he holds a mirror with this movie to show the true reflection of the industry. One of the to major reasons why the film didn't appeal the majority is mainly because of the first 40 minutes. As mentioned earlier, it shows glimpses of Ayya's life as an artiste and Balaji bravely opts for an 8 minute single take drama shot which depicts the life of Aurangazeb. This plays a key role in a subtle manner throughout the movie. Many might suggest that the first 40 mins should have been reduced to 20 mins. But Balaji needed Ayya to be established strongly since his character plays the main role in the rest of the movie despite of no physical presence. One of the highlight scene of the movie was the dialogue by Dhanapalan which forms the crux of the movie. "Ayya has earned the love and respect of the A Center audience. Now we need to PULL HIM DOWN to attain the market of B & C. For that we need to add some elements". Balaji seems to have knack of telling absolutely unbelievable stories in a very convincing manner. Or else imagine how a NKPK & Seethakaathi happened. I believe 'comedy' is the tool implied for Balaji to make his stories believable. Also the film entirely depends of Balaji's narration after he loses his lead actor. Now that shows the talent of the director in him. Also not compromising anything for the commercial market and yet keeping the proceedings interesting justifies the theme completely. No unnecessary songs, comedy, unwanted scenes etc.

On a downside, I felt the movie should not have marketed as Vijay Sethupathy starrer. I know it will help the movie to attain larger audience but I think this trick backfired to an extend because most opinions displayed disappointment. Also I thought he should have tweaked a bit in terms of pacing. He could have cut short the retake scene (especially during IInd time) since the I believe his target audience got the message. I know he wanted to show how hard is it to can an absolutely simple shot and enact that scene. Still he could have handled the pace a bit better.

Vijay Sethupathy really didn't have a challenging role to perform. I felt the make up was overdone and Vijay seems to be struggling inside the makeup. Two performances I loved the most were Mouli as Parasuram & Sundar Reddy as Dhanapalan. Mouli gave the dignity required for his role while Reddy's performance was a dig at some of the major lead actors (especially one actor). Rajkumar brought down the house in a single scene. Rest of the actors lent their presence in cameos & extended cameos like Archana (as Ayya's wife), J Mahendran (As judge who got a brilliant dialogue), Bagavathy Perumal (as a director), Karunakaran (as lawyer) while Remya Nambeeshan, Bharadwaj Rangan & Ram playing themselves along with Bharathiraja.

Govind Vasantha, who is freshly after the successful 96, delivers the right score for the movie. The scenes where he could have opted for loud and whacky music was smartly dealt in a subtle manner. The songs helped with the narration. The technical side stood out especially the cinematography. The lighting & color tone he used for external scenes and drama scenes were brings the audience into the experience.

Despite the snail pace, I felt this is one of the brilliant, innovative works from Tamil Cinema. Often makers falter with satire especially if it contains fantasy elements, Those who wanted to experience something brilliant, something exceptional, something uncompromising, Balaji's best work till date (IMO) is the one I hugely recommend!!!
