      Default Super Deluxe Review

      Movie: Super Deluxe

      Director: Thiagarajan Kumararaja

PVR Vega City Mall, March 30 6:25 PM, Bangalore

One common thing which connects all of us here is movies. We wait for those release days and weekends to immerse into the magic of cinema. we waited for 8 years to see Thiagarajan Kumararaja's second movie and oh, boy! that was worth waiting for 8 years. It takes us through 3 different stories, 3 predicaments and numerous quirky characters. The movie starts with setting up characters and their predicament in all 3 stories. From there on it is a wild ride through their emotions, revelations and crazy situations. Plot Thickens with each frame and ends with an orgasmic last 20 mins.

It is a movie on Norms. Norms, which we think are essential for our survival. it is about how we react when these norms are the actual reason for our chaos. Beauty is that how the writer tells us "sex" with all its literal meaning is the undercurrent for all our norms. The movie also discusses the other emotions which keep us forward like faith and love and how it shapes the way we want to live our lives. Bringing in an outsider to enlighten us is a nice touch. Make no mistake, with all the layers and philosophies around, it is a fun movie. it is a joy ride for 3 hours and make us laugh, weep and sympathise with the protagonists as any movie should be.

The technical side is top notch. Cinematography reminds us of his first movie and is a really good thing. How he shot the movie in some of the confined spaces is a treat to watch. Telling a story within a frame and to beautifully presenting it is something they have done throughout this movie. Usage of colour and lighting is nothing short of world class. Art and design is another impressive aspect which elevates the nuances of this movie. Music is a master class on when to use it and when not to use it. Yuvan did it again after an impressive outing in Peranbu this year.

This probably is the most ambitious script in recent memory. They went all out with writing. Did not shy away from anything and was more than happy to make us uncomfortable with situations and Predicaments which we usually turn a blind eye. it was like placing the characters from our milieu into an unlikely situation and telling us that life is stranger than fiction.

Now coming to the man himself, Thiagarajan Kumararajan. He is assured about what he wants to say and how he wants to say it. How he uses all his props to bring the magic in screen is something remarkable. With all the gimmicks and technicality, the movie should communicate with the audience. it needs to emotionally connect with the audience and it is here he scores heavily. That is why we could connect with mugil, Vaembu, Shilpa, Rasakutti, Leela and even Arputham.

All the actors lived the characters. Vijay Sethupathy was excellent as vulnerable transgender who visits his son and wife after a long time. He brings out the beauty in Shilpa with ease and his chemistry with the child that played Rasakutti was endearing. Samantha and Fahad as a couple was a roar. Frustration and agony they go through as a couple could not have brought out this well without their histrionic skills. Most of the others including Ramya Krishnan, motta puffs and his Gang did justice to their roles.

All in all Super deluxe is once in a decade kind of a movie. it starts with a "happy ending" and ends with a happy ending. In between it takes us through an emotional ride and ask us, is this the life we want to live? It discusses almost everything that makes people in our society uncomfortable like sex, the meaning of life, death, gender, ethics, norms, morality and how all these are interconnected. In short, it is a ****ing awesome movie.

visually kureyund. thematically obviously. both the films open with lovemaking shots....in one, the man is on top and he's clearly mentioned to be impotent. here the woman is on top and the man is implied to be nearly impotent. airplanes, the key in the car...also, rasukutty and his adulation towards his father is clearly a reflection of Kodakapuli and his son in AK. pinneyum kure undaavanam, these r the ones that were obvious to me that they can exist in the same cinematic universe.

It could be in Star Wars universe too the way there's a delightful nadaswaram take on the Star Wars theme as well as duality at many instances of the film

Maybe because he has been projected as an elite genius film maker by the media as an after effect of his first film. SD is just bullshit philosophy and dickhead characters smartly packaged with some sharp dialogues.

Enikku aake ishtamaayathu aa character ettedukkan VS kanicha dhairyam..and he was underutilized in that role.
