Default Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1 ~ An Opinion

      Venue ~ INOX, Shobha Mall
      Screen ~ 01
      Showtime ~ 11:20 AM
      Status ~ 90%

When I check the runtime of the movie, I decided to take a Saturday show sans fans on recliner to enjoy this Mani Ratnam movie. Trust me, such choices can enhance your experience. There won't be any All Kerala Chiyaan, Jayam, Kaithi Fans to disturb the experience and the recliner gives you a much easier sitting experience for a movie that runs close to 180 mins.

I recall the opening line of my Marakkar opinion. Lawrence of Arabia is a classic even for the cinephiles today (even if they got bored). Its because it was regarded as a classic for along time and it will be pure stupidity for someone to criticize it. The actual fact is "that someone" is majority now and today a Lawrence of Arabia will bomb at box office. This is not because of Baahubali. Its something we are pretty used to when you check the the failures of Kaalapaani, Legend of Bhagath Singh, Bose etc. which were well made movies. Even Pazhashiraja didn't gross which it was expected from it. Then what did Baahubali did was add all the commercial mass masala elements known to Indian Cinema to a period drama. So its a Period Mass Masala movie which Rajamouli has perfected and repeated later in RRR. Now check the commonality in those pan india success...All have Mass Masala Elements...Pushpa, KGF are others to join the list. Why didn't Vikram work all over? Why can't a much acclaimed Take Off work all over? The same reason.

Now coming to P:S 1, its purely stupid for someone to expect such a movie from Mani Rathnam. He will never opt for those loud moments. I have not read the novel so my perspective is based purely on the cinematic experience. With a voice over from Kamal Hassan, he explains the current situation in that area and we see Aadhitha Karikalan (Vikram) emerging out of a mist in a heroic style (Mani Rathnam Max) during a war scene. Then we have big names popping one after another back to back. Now except that misty intro, there was not even a single heroic intro for any actor except Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's Nandini. Maybe Mani is still awe of her beauty. During these portions, Mani never brings any so called Goosebumps moments which majority expect in such films. Say for example,

. But Mani Rathnam doesn't need such gimmicks or rather avoids such gimmicks. His style was more the politics between the characters and the relationship between each other leading to consequences. The romance, treachery, conspiracy, betrayal, mistrust etc. forms the drama. Mani Rathnam along with his DOP framed those moments brilliantly and the drama was moving smoothly to an extend.

But the issue is the drama is not exactly captivating because there is a loop effect. We have one character who doesn't want to go to Thanjavur, We have another character plotting against the current kingdom. This keeps repeating again n again in different formats. Also the portion featuring Vallavariyan (Karthi), which was the commercial ingredient of this movie started to run out of steam after a few portions despite being integral part of the plot. Above all, I can't make an opinion completely without experiencing the second part which will give a full picture. Also there is no "Why Baahubali killed Kattappa" moment that leads to next part.

Vikram despite of lesser screentime looked great onscreen as the warrior. Karthi was charming while Jayam Ravi was surprisingly good especially his dialogue delivery. Trisha was simply terrific while Aishwarya Rai was nothing but "plastic" while the other Aishwarya was gorgeous sans makeup. Whenever I see any closeup shot where the lead actor praises her beauty, I felt like loads of make up on a plastic mannequin. She looked gorgeous in a flashback scene. Then we have a list of actors like Rahman, Sharathkumar, Parthipan, Prakshraj, Shobitha, Kishore Sathya, Prabhu, Vikram Prabhu etc. Once again Lal attained a noticeable role like Saaho in midst of this crowd and yeah he dobbed his lines. Its sad to see Jayaram being reduced as a mere court jester kinda comic relief. I really hope he has more to do in the second half. And yeah, there was Babu Antony & Riyaz Khan too.

A R Rahman along with Ravi Varman were the stars of this show. On one side ARR was in terrific form with songs and original score. And Mani Rathnam as expected shot it in an outstanding fashion. For me the choreography and shots of the "crimson song" was the standout performance. Ravi Varman just delivered whats expected from Mani Rathnam movie. I wish he could have done something with Aishwarya's plastic look. Sreekar Prasad used his experience to keep this movie as engaging and smooth as possible. Thotta Tharani's art work is evident with brilliance.

Since my expectations on this movie was apt, I really enjoyed the cinematic experience provided by Mani Rathnam and looking forward to the second part. At least all looked original unlike "Marakkar"
