      James Cameron about Avatar -2

“[‘Avatar 2′] is on Pandora. Well, I’m really writing the second and third films together, so it completes a kinda three film story arc. And we will see the oceans of Pandora, which we haven’t seen at all and that’s an ecosystem that I’m dying to start designing because it’s going to look spectacular… [‘Avatar 2′] narrows the spotlight instead of just nature in general or the rainforest. It focuses it a little more on ocean issues, because we have a planet that’s a blue planet. From a distance, you look at it, the Earth is a lot more blue than it is, you know brown, the land mass. We’re making the oceans unsurvivable for a lot of the species right now. For a lot or reasons. It’s just a way to focus a little energy in that direction.”

James Cameron Inventing New Technologies for ‘Avatar 2 and 3′ ( Detailed News )

James Cameron is such a nerd. Seriously. But thankfully for us, he’s a nerd with an incredible talent for storytelling, and we not only get to experience him changing the filmmaking process itself but the way we view films in general. Case in point: for his upcoming sequels to the biggest movie of all time, Avatar, he’s working on two brand new technological advances. First, he wants to shoot and project Avatar 2 and 3 at a higher frame rate than 24 frames per second because “movies are a century out of date.” Second, he wants to close the gap to a point where he can shoot on his virtual camera with such quality that he doesn’t need visual effects to make the images photo real. You know, simple stuff like that. We’ve got video of Cameron discussing these advances and our elementary explanations after the jump.

Well we are going to see the oceans of Pandora and the lifeforms and ecosystems there, so we’ve got to do more with CG water, both underwater with the caustics, the lighting, the optics of bringing light through water and with the surface of water, which is one of the big challenges in CG. But that’s all doable, those are just plug ins, that’s all an iterative process. The only sweeping change between now and when we release the second Avatar film is I want to natively author the film at a higher frame rate and project it at a higher frame rate. I want to get rid of the motion artifacting associated with 24 frame display. Because movies are way behind, they’re a century out of date.

48, 60, 72, we’re looking at the efficacy of the different ones and different solutions. The projectors can do it right now, the projectors can run at 144hrz but they’re still displaying 24 frames content at 144hrz. The trick is how do you display 48 or 60 frame content, multiflashing it, the way 3D projectors do. So that’s one little bump I’m working on.

Then there’s some software development that we’re doing to make the process, our real time virtual production process more intuitive, faster, more real looking, more like the finished product. Right now we work at a proxy resolution. We create a 1980s video game looking end product, we give it to the visual effects company and they start over mapping all new high resolution assets to those low res assets. They start all over and do it all again and come out with a photo real end product. What we want to do is eliminate that middle step and start to close the gap between what our real time looks like and what the finished photo real looks like. Eventually, 15 years from now, we should be working real time in at a photo real image, almost like you do with photography. So it’s getting to the point where it’s indistinguishable from photography at the moment your doing it as opposed to waiting six months or a year.

Film is shot, and projected, at 24 frames per second. However, that’s a limitation of the medium. Humans move faster than that by nature so the higher the amount of frames one shoots, the more precise the movement gets. For example, in Jackass 3D, they shot on a camera that shoots at 1000 frames per second then project it at 24 frames per second. So by projecting all those frames in 24 frame speed, it looks really slow. But if that footage was projected at 1000 frames per second, it would just look really crisp. Cameron doesn’t want his movies to be that fast, just faster than 24 and because he’s shooting digitally, and not on film, he can do that. Computers can do anything! And, according to him, the current 3D digital projectors can handle a higher frame rate. He just has to figure out what works best for him and his images. Once he does, the films will look cleaner and not have any “motion artifacting,” which basically means blurring. I love that he says “so that’s one little bump I’m working on.” You know, just totally changing the way films are made and displayed.

The second “little bump” he’s working on is improving the software in his virtual camera. This will surely be detailed in the new Avatar DVD coming out, but one of Cameron’s biggest inventions on the first film was a camera that made it possible for the actors in motion capture suits, on a soundstage, to look and see a very rough idea of what the final images of Pandora would look like in real time. It’s sort of like in iChat how you can put yourself on a roller coaster or under the sea.

Well, Cameron is working to make those images in his camera better and better. The better they get, the less digital effects need to happen on the back end. Eventually, he feels like the software will be smart enough that you can shoot and see – basically – the final movie, already done, immediately. It would be like shooting CG as if it was film. Again, just another “little bump,” eliminating digital effects.

      'Avatar 2' update:

James Cameron confirms Stephen Lang for next three films as Col. Quaritch; character is cross between Terminator and Darth Vader

"Avatar 2" is hitting some bumps along its production road as director James Cameron is having some difficulties trying to locate the best possible technology that will translate his vision of the film. On the upside, there is no more doubt that the movie is coming and some unearthed interviews reveal that the director himself has already spilled some beans on what fans can expect for the sequel.

It was previously speculated that Stephen Lang will be returning in "Avatar 2" to reprise his role as Col. Miles Quaritch. It was hard to believe for some fans of the movie as the character did have a very convincing death. But surprisingly enough, these speculations are not without basis. A 2013 interview by Deadline with director James Cameron has already exclusively revealed that Lang will be returning for the next three films of the franchise.

Cameron says, "Steven was so memorable in the first film, we're privileged to have him back. I'm not going to say exactly how we're bringing him back, but it's a science fiction story, after all. His character will evolve into really unexpected places across the arc of our new three-film saga. I really look forward to working with such a gifted actor, who's also become a good friend."

This may also become a bit of a good news for fans: Cameron confirmed that Lang will not be your "regular" bad guy anymore. He explained that when the character of Col. Miles Quaritch comes back, he will be a cross between Arnold Schwarzenegger's Terminator and Star Wars' iconic Darth Vader. Pretty exciting indeed.

While there have not been much about the movie in terms of plot and casting, fans have been satisfying themselves with some interesting stuff on the grapevine, such as the supposed prison theme for the upcoming installment. Also something to look forward to is the "Avatar" comic book series coming from Dark Horse.

Avatar 2 Not Coming Soon, James Cameron Wants to Take His Time to Perfect the Production

The few reports that we’ve heard about “Avatar 2” on the official front have painted a very interesting picture for the film, and fans are generally curious about what James Cameron could be planning for them. One thing is clear right now though – the film is not going to arrive anytime soon, and the director is obviously going to take his time in order to polish it to perfection. He seems to have some major plans in mind for the new production and he is reportedly actually lacking the proper technology to realize his ideas, which has been one of the main factors in delaying the production so far.

On the other hand, Cameron apparently wants to turn this into a trilogy for the time being, and planning out the whole thing has been taking its toll on the director, and preventing him from moving forward too quickly with “Avatar 2”. There are apparently various plot ideas that he has been juggling around, but he is yet to pick the ones that will make it into the final film, and he has to decide what he wants to do with the story exactly.

We have been getting some reports that “Avatar 2” is going to be focused on a dark, prison theme and the whole film will be a bit moodier than its predecessor, changing the whole tone to a large extent. We don’t how this could reflect on the story being told in “Avatar 2” but we definitely expect that James Cameron is planning something equally nice to balance the more negative aspects of the new story.

After all, “Avatar” had plenty of positive things to say, and it wouldn’t make sense if “Avatar 2” just dialed that back and gave the story a more negative voice. The franchise needs to evolve, true, but it also attracted its fans originally because of some very specific plot details and the general style of its storytelling, and changing those aspects now could spell disaster for the sequel. But in the end, James Cameron is a director with a lot of experience and he should know best what this franchise needs and how to move it forward.

One of the more interesting plot details about “Avatar 2” that we’ve learned recently is that Stephen Lang is going to come back to reprise his role as Miles Quaritch, despite the fact that the character was apparently killed in the original film. There will be some explanation for his survival in the new story, obviously, and from what we can tell it should be done in a way that doesn’t leave fans disappointed and feeling like they’ve been given a cop-out.

Other than that, we’ve been hearing some mixed rumors about the new film but nothing concrete for the moment – and it looks like that’s how things are going to be for some time too, as James Cameron has been taking it nice and easy with this production and he’s in no rush to get it out quickly.

The director would be smart to give this film as much time as he needs too, as it’s a very important production that holds a lot for his career, and he needs to make absolutely sure that it’s going to work out well. There are various things that Cameron can do that can swing the popularity of the franchise forward or backward, and it’s probably not very easy to predict where the situation is going to go anyway.

James Cameron Says 'Avatar 2' Aiming For Christmas 2017 Release

Eager to prove to himself and the world that "it wasn’t just some big fluke the first time," James Cameron has been taking his sweet time with the trio of "Avatar" sequels he's got cooking up. In fact, "Avatar 2" was originally scheduled to come out this month (imagine if it had faced off against "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" at the box office?), but the release date was pushed back to give Cameron more time to prepare and develop the trilogy of movies he plans to shoot simultaneously. And that's not all. The world of Pandora has also expanded to theater, with Cirque du Soleil launching "Toruk: The First Flight" this week in Montreal. And Cameron used the occasion to provide the latest update on when we might see entries two, three, and four, in his cinematic saga.

“Christmas of ’17 is the target,” Cameron told the Montreal Gazette.
“At least, that’s what we’ve announced. But I don’t consider that to be as important as the fact that when we get all three films done, we drop them a year apart. I call it a meta-narrative that runs across the three movies. Each film stands alone, but it also tells one much larger story.

“We have design more or less finished, which is an enormous task," he added. "It’s been about a two-year task. [We’ve finished] all the creatures and the landscapes, and the new worlds within the world of Pandora that you see. The writing is ongoing, but almost finished. Technical development is done. Stages are done. Infrastructure. So we’re really poised to start after the first of the year.”

Avatar 2, 3, 4 and 5 will be released over the next seven years !!

      James Cameron whata Confidence man

The future of James Cameron's Avatar franchise has been uneasy, with sequels facing major delays, but today Fox announced it would be developing at least four more titles in the series.

Cameron announced the plans for Avatar 2, Avatar 3, Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, telling a group of journalists that he'd see them on Pandora, according to Variety.

Avatar 2, the first sequel to Cameron's record-breaking film from 2009, will arrive Christmas 2018. As of right now, there aren't any other major titles that would compete with Cameron at the box office, but that could change. Star Wars: Episode VIII was originally supposed to be released next May, but the Disney decided to bump it down to December. If the same thing happens with the stand-alone young Han Solo movie, Fox could lose out to Disney at the box office.

The third installment will arrive on Christmas 2020, with the fourth being released on Christmas 2022 and the fifth a year later, around Christmas 2023. Sam Worthington, who starred in the original, has previously said he's interested in returning for the sequel, as has Zoe Saldana.

When Avatar was released in 2009, it became the top-grossing film ever, pulling in more than $2.7 billion worldwide. Cameron has previously said he was waiting for technology to catch up to his concepts for what the sequels should be before starting production, but it looks like things are definitely underway now.
