Kamal's 30 short films on Chennai!

Kamal Hassan's commitment to ''good and positive cinema'' is commendable. The man's fierce commitment to ushering in a new era in film making could be seen at the concluding session of the Chennai International Screen Writing (CISW) workshop, organized by his Rajkamal Films and IIT-M. The Oscar winning French script writer Jean Claude Carriere, the Chief Guest, said ''India is south, especially Chennai. From here the strongest and influential traditions of art evolved like Kathakali to classical music. So why not make short films on Chennai? To watch the passers-by in a city and from it give a different look to cinema.''
A Project Chennai has been evolved, where 60 from 250 who participated in the workshop will be shortlisted and finally 30 participants will get to do to do a 10 minute film based on the city.
Says Kamal Hassan, ''When I see old pictures or films shot in Chennai, it makes me nostalgic. When I see people walking on the Mount Road stretch between the old Spencer's and Higginbothams, a feeling of angst takes over me because you cannot walk like that anymore.''
The chosen directors are likely to be funded by Rajkamal's new short film making unit. As Kamal said, ''It is not just a commercial venture, but a historic memory of a city.''. Hats off to Kamal Hassan, the actor's actor who has the courage to look into the future and change the way we make movies.

The film, a remake of the Bollywood trendsetter A Wednesday, is going to be a different film in Tamil.
Kamal fans wanted it to be released on August 12, 2009, for sentimental reasons. It is the 50th Golden Jubilee year since the Ulaganayagan’s first film as a child artist Kalathoor Kannamma released on August 12, 1959.
Now, working on those sentiments, the trade wants it to be released on August 12, too, in Tamil and Telugu. The film has the potential to take a bumper five-day (August 12 being a Wednesday) record opening worldwide, as it is the Independence day weekend.

Having completed Kanthaswamy, which is gearing up for release soon, Vikram is busy with Mani Ratnam’s Raavan. There were reports that the star would simultaneously work on the next project with KS Ravikumar alongside Raavan. When Vikram was approached for a clarification, the actor said that the get ups for Raavan and KS Ravikumar’s film differ a lot; therefore, he cannot work on both the projects simultaneously.

Meanwhile, director KS Ravi Kumar is busy with Jaggubhai and Aadhavan. Sources from Kollywood say that while the director completes his Aadhavan, Vikram will be ready for their next venture together.

The producer of the Tamil version Ghajini has once again filed a suit in the Madras High Court pleading for the deposit of Rs. 230 crores in a nationalized bank until the issue is resolved.

Earlier, Salem Chandrasekar filed a suit against Geetha Arts, the producers of the Hindi version Ghajini that the he holds the rights of the film and hence Geetha Arts should share the profits with him. Following this, the Madras High Court ruled that Geetha Arts must deposit Rs. 5 crores and release the film. After the film’s release the court ordered that Salem Chandrasekar can realize the amount. Geetha Arts appealed to the Supreme Court against this decision. While this suit is still pending at the SC, Salem Chandrasekar has once again filed a petition requesting the High Court to direct Geetha Arts to deposit the entire profits Rs. 230 crore until the issue is resolved. The case has been posted for hearing on July 2nd.

It was unique in many ways as only Radio Jockeys and production team from all FM stations in Chennai were invited for the event.
The Aayirathil Oruvan team of Selva Raghavan, GV Prakash, Parthipan, Andrea, Ramji and producer R.Ravindran were there along with the Sony Music team. The music of the film has been appreciated by the critics and it is selling very well.
It started with a session of Q & A to the Radio media- What would you do if you wereAayirathil Oruvan? The best reply was from an RJ who said: “I will have Andrea and Reemma on either side!”
Three songs from the film were performed on stage, by professional dancers. Andrea hogged the show in her body hugging black off shoulder dress. She was in her elements and seems to be enjoying the evening as she was the cynosure of all eyes.

H.Murali of Classic Creations who is now making Jaggan Mohini has purchased the remake rights.
T:20 in Malayalam was a huge hit as the film was produced by the artists association AMMA along with actor Dileep’s 'Grand Productions'.
However in Tamil it is doubtful if big stars will act in the remake. The basic success of T:20 in Malayalam was that it was a multi starrer and all the superstars had equal roles to play.
The film has been tentatively titled Irupathu Irupathu, and finalization of the film’s cast is going on.
