Default ***AYIRATHIL ORUVAN Review: Dino's n SG's Take***

      Theatre: CBE Senthil
Showtime: FD 5:45 PM SHOW (Poor first day attendance on a Pongal day)
Runtime: 3 Hours (needs to be trimmed immediately!)

innale thanne kandathaa...ivide aarum review ittillel idaam enn karuthi, but VG had put it, so i thot of putting it up later coz was exhausted to write a detailed one...alpam detailed aanu, patience ullavarkk motham vaayikkaam....allaathavarkk verdictum!

"Ayirathil Oruvan can be put in the league of Pirates of the Carribean, Braveheart, Gladiator." so proclaimed Selvaraghavan prerelease of AO n' many of us frowned, but lo, Selvaraghavan was right guys....albeit partially!!!

Yes, for most of the first half, AO matches Hollywood adventure films' brilliance, technically n visual appealwise, some of the adult jokes unpalatable to the family notwithstanding! In fact, the A certificate for the film is justified as heads get chopped, blood spills out of mutilated heads onto the camera, body count rise, add some "indigestable scenes" for the family audience too!

The film kickstarts with a govt-appointed search team lead by Reema Sen requesting Andrea to join them in helping locate Andrea's father who goes missing in one of his archeological quests on the Chola dynasty. Karthi is the leader of the laborers' group who do the loading and unloading for the search mission team, as they set out on a cruise to Ming-Hua Island of Vietnam where the archeologist has gone missing! Once they reach the island, untoward incidents start to happen and one by one gets killed. The team encounters leech-like creatures in the sea, apocalypto-like warriors, snakes, extreme cold, heat, starvation for days n what not!!! Karthi is hellbent on returning back, but Reema is almost brutally insistent on continuing despite the death count rising, making us audience suspect there is more to her than it actually seems.

Folklore has it that the last Chola prince escaped to this island after being hotly pursued by the rival dynasty of Pandyas, n he laid 7 death traps meant to kill whoever came on his trail. Noone has managed to beat these traps and reach where the remains of the ancient Chola dynasty still exists, but of the whole team only Karthi, Reema, n Andrea finally manage to reach there beating all these 7 traps mentioned above like snakes, warriors, starvation, etc...quirk of fate, luck, or were they destined to make it? well, u find the answer in the second half...

The interval point, where the 3 principal characters played by Karthi, Reema Sen, n Andrea run around like psychics after reaching the place where the erstwhile Chola dynasty existed, promises a lottttt!!!

Is the film taking a delightful horror turn(our favorite genre!), why doesn't Karthi die tho he gets shot by Reema @ interval, adventure x10 than the first half; these questions kept me n my wife eagerly waiting for the 2nd half to unfold!

In the second half, things turn darker once we are shown that the erstwhile pompous Chola dynasty still exists, but have turned into a starved, charcoal-painted, flesh eating civilization who wait for their King, played by Parthiban, to bring them human flesh to eat. From here, the film turns totally dark, with unnecessary violence, sexual innuendos, n some logic defying scenes ruling the roost. Agreed that it is fantasyland, but still Selva leaves so many questions unanswered, and that is where the frustration creeps into a viewer like me who was determined to watch it engagingly evading the howling that was going on in the theatre. As the 2nd half progresses, it turns out that one among the 3 is from the Pandya dynasty bloodline looking for revenge and the other, the Chola dynasty bloodline who will end up as their eventual savior...no prizes for guessing who's who! In between, Selva throws in a Gladiator-inspired, Roman Colosseum-like fight involving Karthi, which tho well shot is totally unnecessary and adds on precious minutes to the already long second half! Once the film reaches the preclimax, the battalion of Pandyas (i would like to address them so, but pray what Selva visualized them as, coz he has given them Army uniforms!!!) behave worse than street dogs grappling at the captured Chola women n raping them! But surprise, surprise, not even one of the men even ogle at the only beautiful lady in the pack, Andrea, but fight like beasts to grope @ the famished women who hardly look like human beings...! Why Selva, was the only intention to include a rape scene too to nail home the brutality...sorry, but totally out of place!

From the outset, when the disclaimer played out that the film is purely fictional and not based on the real Chola and Pandya communities who still exist in our society, one knew that Selva is walking on a tightrope and has to end the story in a way that he does not hurt both the community sentiments, which results in a poor climax !!! The Pandyas get their Lord's idol back from the Cholas who had captured it centuries back! The Cholas, though their King is killed and people vanquished, continue their journey forward headed by the "Ayirathil Oruvan", their savior! Fine, but at the end of 3 long hours and the particularly exhausting 2nd half, it is hard to figure out what the film wanted to convey?! It is all right to have exemplary visions about filmmaking but if the execution is not perfect, it will fall flat, n AO falls to an extent in its execution.

Technically, this is India's answer to all the Western adventures that we've watched with gaping mouths n wide eyes, wondering whether we will be able to make such films!!! The answer is yes, we can, given that there are visionaries like Selvaraghavan and producers like Raveendran...Yes, the graphics work is not completely top notch, but then it is not bad either!!! There were a few scenes which sort of shocked me out of the seat, the scenes in the desert especially! Camerawork by Ramji is superb. GV Prakash is a revelation with his tunes in a film that does not require songs...Vijay Yesudas' rendition of Thaai Thindra Manne is awesome!!! Un Mela Aasa Thaan sung by Dhanush just rocks!!! BGM adds to the film's theme, superb work GVP!!! Editing and action could have been better, in fact, the second half is too long and the editor shud have done better.

Dialogues at many a portion in the second half may not be understood by all, especially us Keralites, as most of it is ancient tamil n may be advised to watch in dvd with subtitles to be comprehended to the minute detail, alas, the complete viewing pleasure of this film can only be felt on a big screen, so it's a catch-22 situation actually! I was lucky enough to have my wife with me, who tho a Malayali, has been born n brought up here in TN, to translate some of the heavyduty Tamil dialogues in the 2nd half.

Performances are all adequate, Reema Sen is a revelation, never knew she could perform so well in a multi-layered character, Andrea is apt, Karthi personally was a disappointment for me becoz he is made to repeat the Paruthiveeran role in his second film too...i expected this actor to make great strides with his second film, but performancewise hes still there where he was in his first film, superb acting again, but a role that he now knows like the back of his hand! Think one has to wait for Paiyya to see how he fits in as a commercial hero. Parthiban is superb, with his ever expressive eyes n dialogue delivery! Prathap Pothen is listed in the cast, but does not have a single dialogue throughout the film!

DINO'S TAKE: Never-before attempt in Indian Cinema, albeit a bit flawed...must watch for any ardent Indian movie lover....be warned, take ur family at ur own risk!!!

SG'S TAKE: Mindblowing first half, mind n' senses-numbing final 1 hour and was waiting for the film to get over somehow!!!

For diggarator, my rating is 3.75/5, out of which 3 is for the guts and vision of Selva in conceptualizing such a film and carrying it off to a certain extent and also to the producer for backing such a huge project!

One disturbing n pertinent question @ the end of it all, pray why Selva is hellbent on driving away women n family from his films with the strong, but at times unwanted sexual content in his films, esply post Pudhuppettai! In AO, there are many a dialogue and scene unpalatable to family and hence the A certificate, but when most of it seems unavoidable, why go for such gimmicks?! There is a scene where Rima Sen stands up, spreads her legs, lifts her skirt uptil her thighs n pees into a vessel kept in between her legs...!!! I cud hear some disgruntled noises among the audience, my wife was in disbelief, n i was squirming too in my seat..! Now, one can understand if such a scene is essential to the subject, but when it is not even remotely required, one has to doubt Selva's intentions? Another dialogue from Karthi goes "variyaa roomekkulla? Safetyappathi bayappadaathe, condom ellaam pursekkulla vechirukken" and this earned laughs, claps, n wolf whistles from the front benchers but deadpan reaction from any in the balcony...! Now, am not being preachy or anything but when we don't tire of criticising David Dhawan n Co for writing such cheap, frontbenchers-aimed jokes, why spare Selvaraghavan when he retorts to the same antics to earn some cheap laughs?! If this trend continues, Selva films will not find any female/family audience in the future. A personal example is my wife who has vowed never again to venture to watch a Selva film after being distressed by watching Pudhuppettai/AO! She thought Pudhuppettai was an aberration but with AO, she feels Selva is knowingly including such elements as cheap gimmicks!
