*** Road Movie : Review ~ by Sir Gujav ***
Theatre, Show : Big Cinemas, FD 2200 Hrs
Status : 85% Long time guys..wazzup??  Njan kurach busy ayi poyi  Dev Benegal's Road Movie was right on top of my list movies to watch out for in 2010. Right from the premier at Toronto Film festival the movie has been getting rave reviews. Here is my take on this movie.  Road movie is a story about Vishnu (Abhay Deol), who makes a journey to Samundarabad in his friend's 1942 Chevy Truck, to escape from his father's failing hair oil business. His journey takes a different course when he discovers that the Chevy truck is a mobile cinema theatre. In this journey, Vishnu gets company in a young kid, an old mechanic (Satish Kaushik) and a Rajasthani gypsy lady (Tanishtha Chatterjee). Together they find their way out of the parched land of Kutch, which is ruled by Water mafias and goons. Along the journey they screen old hindi movies for the villagers....bringing smiles to their faces. Vishnu discovers the real essence of the life in this Indian road trip.  Positives: 1) Awesome cinemtography. The Kutch salt desert, the melas, the variuos color combis.... have been shot brillianly  2) Good acting from all the casts including the young lad. Satish Kaushik was just exceptional with his crisp dialogues.  3) No cliches. Not the typical bollywood masala movie. 4) A short movie (90+ mins). Negatives: 1) Script and the characters in the lacks depth. You just dont feel for the character. 2) First half was a bit slow but the abrupt end just left everyone clueless.  3) The movie fails to bring out the message..be it the water problem in the Kutch Region or human selfishness or watever was intended...  4) The turning point of the movie was the biggest dissappoint - The water mafia scenes.  This movie is not a typical commercial movie. This would fit into the genre of movies like Babel. But for me this movie fails to meet my expectations. But I'd like to see more movie in this genre in the future for sure...Let this be the begining.. My Verdict: I would say a 2.5/5 and this might be an overrating if not for the cinematography.I feel it is not gonna survive for long at the BO
