      Default Inception review

      Place : Bangalore Rex
      Time : 2.30
      Status : Why bother!

I was late 4 minutes into the movie, so I can comment only on the remaining part. So forgive if my understanding of the movie could've been massively influenced otherwise by those opening moments.

Nolan is a director whom I love ever since he made The Dark Knight. Yes I've seen Memento but then it really never gave any more promise than say a Jacob's Ladder. Tremendously gifted, but then sometimes you pour all your greatness into the first movie you make and dry up. Has happened to several directors/scripters of the past.

But then came Batman returns, which held promise but in my mind had him at the level of a Singer, dependable, but not enlightening.

Then The Dark Knight happened (Ashamed to say I went purely by net reviews for The Prestige and saw it after TDK got released). And I was a Nolanopholic ever since! Wouldn't deny had it been Prestige instead of TDK, the results would've been similar.

Anyway, so needless to say my expectations were huge and humoungous when Inception was announced. But when the trailers came out, it reached a crescendo. I had harboured my personal fears too, whether this would be a rework on similar themes that existed in public imagination at the turn of the century, post Matrix and movies like Cell etc.

And here's the confirmation. Yes, my fears have come true. While it is not exactly in a devastating way, still the fact that is that Inception is nothing but a blast to the past (glorifying past, nevertheless past itself) combining heavy duty storytelling, purposeful layering, backed by tremendous CGI and a an intent to confound audience. Once you start permeating the top heavy layer, you'll be disappointed to see the lack of substance really underneath it, which only some movies like The Matrix managed to defy.

Yes, I am afraid to say the whole saga was a superficial thriller. Brilliantly packaged and executed by Nolan and team but bereft of any real "Inception" tbh. Yes, it taxes your brain like nothing for the entire running duration of the movie, but at the end of it, it just remains that, a goddamn mindjob bereft of what otherwise marked his movies, a soul, a heart.

SPOILER ALERT. Following may contain stuff which could ruin your movie experience so don't continue to read if you really don't wish to.

So basically Leo plays the haunted guy with a dead wife, haunted constantly by her memories. He is trying to constantly trying to forget her, but she still comes back to him, and he even tries desperate measures to get rid of her - Where have I seen that before? Tarkovsky's sci fi epic Solaris, which was decently remade with George Clooney some years back.

Then there is the basic plot which involves breaking into other's subconscious to unravel (or steal depending on your pov) an idea. This involves basically having the victim's body at your disposal, and hardwiring yourself to his thoughts. Yep - reminds one of JLo starrer thriller The Cell.

And then there is the CG. Mind defying stunts, slow mo, bullet mo action, with a storyline fully justifying (or does it?), including a "demo" in the mindlands by a tutor to his shishya. Yep, that's the Matrix.

Compress these together, include the "motive" for the hero (kidding me Nolan???) and glaring plot holes masterfully hidden out of view with some confounding story telling. Purposingly and quite pretentiously creating layers within layers (literally!!) so that the wretched audience really doesn't have a clue that's happening, and is bound to accept that this is what "film mindjobs" are about. No sir, I would rather watch a Vinayan movie for that experience.

Of course, there is the open ending which is straight out of Solaris again.
      SPOILERS over

But then I am just being expressing my ire on my idol not replicating the lofty standards he created for himself. As a standalone movie, it is absolutely brilliant. The CG, the editing, the direction, everything is top drawer stuff. It's like watching a Sachin Tendulkar double century with 5 dropped catches in it against Bangaldesh. Yes, an awesome effort in the final analysis but flawed from a hardcore cricket fanatic.

But that doesn't hold me from saying this is a MUST WATCH for the sheer 2.5 hours of mental exercise that it gives you. Inception or Deception you are sure to come out of the movie hall a different man from when you entered.

      Rating - 4/5
Verdict : Brilliant execution of a disappointing idea.

more than the review, i found it difficult to keep trace of the long oxford sentences and the same time trying to relate it to the story..
