Theatre : Coimbatore Archana {EXCLUSIVE SHOW FOR LALETTAN N' KAMAL FANS, CBE!}
Date : 17th September 09, Show Time : 10.00 P.M. First up, thanks to the Lalettan Fans Association, CBE for the tickets and Ambili for getting me one among the 75 tickets allotted for Lalettan fans for this exclusive fans show prior to the release day!!!! Thanks for the joint effort : Kamal fans & Lal fans. Yep, it is another remake, but what makes Unnai Pol Oruvan unique is the coming together of two acting legends of Indian cinema for the first time, albeit they share only a single scene, as many of us who have watched A Wednesday know. Still, the film is lifted a few notches above 'A Wednesday' purely because of the acting prowess of these two living legends. Director Mr. Chakri Toleti follows the template of the original to the T without falling prey to the demands of a common commercial Tamil film goer. The film starts off just like the original, where I.G. Raghavan Maraar, played by Lalettan recollects a very interesting case of a "stranger cum common man" played by Kamalji making a call to the Chennai police head quarters, warning them of five bombs planted in and around Chennai city. From there on, it is 'A Wednesday Reloaded' till the climax scene, with both the actors throwing punches at each other literally, through phone conversations with some riveting dialogues to back them up. Since the film is an honest remake, there are no major changes in the script. This, in fact, bodes well for the film. Direction by Mr. Chakri Toleti is good considering that it is his debut effort. Art direction by veteran Thotta Tharani is top class. Editing by Rameshwar Bhat is crisp, could have been crispier in the first half. Cinematography by Manoj Soni is also apt. The only negative in the technical side is the background music or the lack of it. For a major part of the first half, the screen is silent except for the dialogues which is a big let down for a film, in this genre. A pity because good background music would have taken this film to better heights. Dialogues are a major positive of the movie. To the most important thing of the film, ie. the performances : Kamalji : This role is a walk in the park for this acting genius. Surprisingly for most of the film he underplays the role, exploding in the climax thereby making the film his own. Some of his expressions during the phone interactions with the IG Maaraar, are just mindblowing. He conveys controlled anger, frustration, cunningness, and tragedy, all to the best that can be, by any actor....Marvellous!!! Lalettan : Many cynics had doubted the logic in Lalettan playing the so called secondary role to Kamalji. I advise these kind souls to watch this film and be amazed at the greatness of this actor. With all respect to Mr. Kher (who played the role in the original with panache! ) Lalettan's portrayal of the role is far higher just because of the added dimensions to this character in the Tamil version. Lalettan with his, by now legendary mannerisms elevates this one dimensional role to greater heights with some great dialogues to back him...! Also, the so-called manipulator Kamalji's greatness in allowing Lalettan a major chunk of the scenes and the more striking dialogues deserves a pat. Just goes to show that great minds work for the betterment of a film, leaving aside petty egos which exist only in lesser souls like us!!! Without doubt, this performance can be counted on par or above with his other great outings outside of Kerala like Iruvar & Company. As Irinjalakkudakkaaran Raghava Maraar, with smatterings of Malayalam in between, Lalettan scores and scores like hell. Compared to those two key roles, the other characters like the hot headed inspector played by Ganesh Venkatataman (The Singh from 'Abhiyum naanum'), his partner, and the lady reporter do justice to their small, but important parts. DINO'S TAKE : If you have watched 'A Wednesday' , watch this for the sheer pleasure you derive from watching the two legends in action…! If you have not, go watch it today !!! P.S. : The only scene in which Kamalji and Lalettan comes together left me wanting more of these two actors together in roles that they share more screen space...that is the MAGIC they leave behind even when the show is over! I cannot predict the commercial outcome of this movie, as it is purely a film for the class audience with the massy ones finding it difficult to relate to the film at many portions of the film due to the heavy use of English language without any tamil subtitles, but critical acclaim is a given for this film!!! Also, some of the name taking would have been avoided like using Gujarat CM's name, and our neighboring country terror outfits' names, etc., are directly used which may create a controversy in the coming days!
