Kohli & Co. are serious contenders in IPL 8

BENGALURU: For some time now Royal Challengers Bangalore's batting and bowling have seldom come to the party together because of issues dogged by team composition.

Thankfully this has been sorted out by the team management to the extent that the forthcoming season holds fresh promise and hope. The first inkling of RCB giving serious thought to their problems and subsequently getting their act together came during the player auction earlier this year.

Their think-tank realised that 50% of their matches would be played at home where a firm pitch encouraged stroke play and fast bowling, RCB's core strengths.

Consequently, with the aim of maximising the wins at home, they decided to build the team around the explosive batting skills of their trio of superstars - skipper Virat Kohli, Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers - and, following the auction, came up with a unit that promises to be one of their most formidable in IPL history .

Traditionally, the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, RCB's home base, has had an excellent pitch where the ball would come on to the bat at a consistent pace and bounce.

This was unlike pitches in other parts of the country where the searing summer heat and its impact on the local clay content would ruin the pitch's top soil and in turn gradually hamper stroke-making. Thus RCB decided they needed to mould a team that could capitalise on these conditions.

However, they were put on the backfoot when they failed to retain the services of a big hitter like Yuvraj Singh. But they compensated for it by grabbing Dinesh Karthik.

The belief is that his aggressive approach to batting could fetch greater dividends on the firm KSCA pitch, than it did on an indifferent Ferozshah Kotla pitch, home of his former IPL team, Delhi Daredevils.

Additionally, Karthik could also keep wickets and thereby relieve the multi-talented De Villiers to try his hand in other roles, including bowling and fielding, which he did so well during the World Cup.

Alongside Karthik, RCB have also gone in for two explosive stroke players, South Africa's David Wiese and West Indies' Darren Sammy, both of whom could also be useful bowlers. Wisse, a T20 specialist, may be the first choice all rounder ahead of Sammy as his ability with the ball is superior.

RCB's bowling too is a lot sharper this year. The Australian pace ace Mitchell Starc is the obvious leader of the pack. His superb bowling in the World Cup won him the player of the tournament award.

He certainly will enjoy sending down his express left-arm fast yorkers under lights. Ironically, the fact that T20 cricket is more bowler-friendly than ODIs as it permits five rather than four fielders outside the circle will stand him and other bowlers in good stead, especially on the smaller grounds in India.

Starc, along with the much-improved Varun Aaron, who has made Bengaluru his new home, the energetic Ashok Dinda and Wiese should form the four-man pace attack.

Depending on pitch conditions, leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal who bowled well last season, left-arm spinner Iqbal Abdullah who bagged 33 wickets for KKR and off-spinner Saxena could be rotated in the playing eleven.

What, however, has been truly impressive about RCB's choice of players is that they have worked out like-for-like back-up players for their key men: the pacy Kiwi Adam Milne for Starc; Sammy for Wiese; the emerging Aussie big-hitting opening batsman Nic Maddinson for Gayle, et al.

Thus, it would seem, RCB have all bases covered this time: explosive batsmen, solid run-accumulators, pace bowlers, spinners, wicket-keepers and outstanding fielders. Indeed they have the men for all reasons. Hopefully this could turn out to be their season of reckoning.

Injured Royal Challengers Bangalore paceman Mitchell Starc will miss the first few matches of the Indian Premier League this season.

Australia's Starc, who was adjudged the Player of the Tournament at the 2015 World Cup with 22 scalps, will remain in his country for two-three weeks to recuperate from a knee injury before joining RCB.

"Mitchell had some knee soreness during the latter stages of the World Cup," Australia's physio Alex Kountouris was quoted as saying by a website. "He will have a short period off to rest and recover before being reassessed by CA medical staff. We estimate his recovery time will be between two-three weeks."

Injured Starc to miss start of the IPL

A knee niggle will keep left-arm fast bowler Mitchell Starc out of the start of the IPL 2015. He will remain in Australia for "two-three weeks" of recuperation before joining Royal Challengers Bangalore, with whom he had debuted last season.

"Mitchell had some knee soreness during the latter stages of the World Cup," Australia's physio Alex Kountouris said, "He will have a short period off to rest and recover, before being reassessed by CA medical staff. We estimate his recovery time will be between two-three weeks."

Starc picked up 14 wickets from as many matches and conceded 7.49 per over for Royal Challengers in 2014. His fitness will be tracked along with fellow fast bowler and new recruit Adam Milne's, who had to pull out of the World Cup with a heel problem. The team does have fast-bowling backup, though, in the form of India's Varun Aaron and Ashok Dinda, and Australia seamer and winner of the Bradman Young Cricketer of the Year Sean Abbott.

Over the last 12 months, Starc has played 27 of the 37 international matches for Australia, including all of the last 14 ODIs. His standout performance at the World Cup - 22 wickets at 10.18 and an economy of 3.5 per over - earned him the Player-of-the-Tournament award and the No. 1 ranking in ODIs. He was backed to continue in the same vein in Tests as well, as Australia turn their attention to overseas success - a tour of West Indies in June and the Ashes in July being their first assignments.

POCKET DYNAMITE: He may never be able to bat at No. 3 for India, but he sure can for CSK. And when he does, we all know how dangerous Suresh Raina can be.
