Mumbai Indians have been permitted to field five overseas players in a team during their Champions League Twenty20 games because several of their Indian players have suffered tournament-ending injuries. However, all the overseas players must have been contracted by them to play in the 2011 IPL. Mumbai are without six of their first-choice players, including the captain Sachin Tendulkar, and their reinforced squad contains seven Indians and seven foreign players.

The other IPL teams will be permitted to field only four overseas players in their XIs during the CLT20.

Apart from Tendulkar, Rohit Sharma, Munaf Patel, Ali Murtaza, Dhawal Kulkarni and Suryakumar Yadav were ruled out of the tournament. They were replaced by Andrew Symonds, Dilhara Fernando, R Sathish, Sarul Kanwar and Abu Nechim. Moises Henriques is contracted to Mumbai, but cannot be considered for selection since he is a part of the New South Wales squad for the tournament.

Mumbai have not announced a captain yet. Tendulkar (injured toe), Rohit (broken finger) and Munaf (twisted ankle) were injured during India's recent tour of England.

The CLT20 technical committee said, in addition to those six players, it had also received medical reports that ruled out two more Mumbai players - Aditya Tare and Pawan Suyal - from the tournament. Therefore, in all, a total of eight out of Mumbai's 23 contracted players were unavailable for selection.

"In the current circumstances, if the Mumbai Indians suffer one more injury to an Indian player, they will be unable to field a team due to CLT20 rules restricting teams to a maximum of four overseas players in any one match," the tournament organisers said in a media release. "As a result, the CLT20 governing council has approved a recommendation by the technical committee that to ensure the integrity of the tournament the Mumbai Indians will be permitted to select up to five overseas players in any one team, provided those players were contracted to play in the 2011 IPL.

"This was considered the most appropriate solution to respect player safety and ensure no player plays for a CLT20 team unless he played for, or was contracted to play for, that team in the qualifying event."

"Subject to approval, the ruling of the Governing Council and Technical Committee is applicable to any other team that, like the Mumbai Indians, suffers tournament-ending injuries in significant numbers that compromises its participation in the event.

"The current Mumbai Indians squad consists of 14 players, however they may add another player to their squad from their remaining injury-free contract list if they choose."

The CLT20 governing council comprises BCCI president N Srinivasan, former IPL chairman Chirayu Amin, BCCI vice-president Niranjan Shah, Cricket South Africa chief Gerald Majola, Cricket Australia chief James Sutherland and a CA official Dean Kino.

Mumbai squad: Harbhajan Singh, Lasith Malinga (overseas), Andrew Symonds (overseas), James Franklin (overseas), Aiden Blizzard (overseas), Davy Jacobs (overseas), Kieron Pollard (overseas), Dilhara Fernado (overseas), R Satish, Ambati Rayudu, T Suman, Yuzvendra Chahal, Sarul Kanwar, Abu Nechim.

CLT20 opens with a glittering ceremony

The third edition of the Champions League Twenty20 (CLT20) got underway on Thursday with a fun-filled opening ceremony in Bangalore.
Popular hip-hop artists Jay Sean, Ludacris and Flo Rida had people dancing to their tunes to give a melodious touch to the evening that also saw captains of all the ten participating teams signing the 'Spirit of Cricket' wall.

The tournament is set to get underway on the field with the first match here on Friday between last year's semifinalists Royal Challengers Bangalore from India and runners-up Warriors from South Africa.
Other than Royal Challengers, three other IPL teams - Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders - are participating in this year's edition of the CLT20.
While Chennai, Bangalore and Mumbai qualified by virtue of finishing as top three in IPL 2011, Kolkata scraped through to the main tournament after finishing as the third best team in the six-team qualifiers that concluded on September 21.

Post 1st Match Bangalore Royal Challengers Vs Warriors at Bangalore

Bangalore's batting v Warriors' bowling

Both teams came close to winning the tournament last year, with RCB reaching the semis while the Warriors ended up as the runners-up. Incidentally, both sides also finished second in their respective domestic T20 leagues this season. So confidence will be high in both camps, though the South African side has the added advantage of having played together as a unit for a longer period

Home advantage will be with the Royal Challengers, but the absence of experienced pacer Zaheer Khan will hit them hard. Left-arm Australian fast bowler Dirk Nannes can be a replacement, but may miss out due to the restriction on the number of foreign players a team is allowed to field. Abhimanyu Mithun has shown potential, while the likes of Chris Gayle and Tillakaratne Dilshan can also chip in to stem the flow of runs. Still, skipper Daniel Vettori will have to lead from the front, with the veteran spinner capable of making life difficult for any batsman.

The key man for RCB will be Chris Gayle. The explosive West Indian opener’s exploits in IPL-4 almost single-handedly led the Bangalore side to the final, as he finished as the top-scorer with an astonishing 608 runs in 12 matches at a strike rate of 183.13.

Squads:

Royal Challengers Bangalore: Daniel Vettori (c), Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Virat Kohli, Mohammad Kaif, Mayank Agarwal, Sreenath Aravind, Arun Karthik, Raju Bhatkal, Abhimanyu Mithun, Dirk Nannes, Asad Pathan, Jamaluddin Syed Mohammad, Saurabh Tiwary.

Warriors: Johan Botha (c), Nicky Boje, Mark Boucher, Colin Ingram, Andrew Birch, Justin Kreusch, Lyall Meyer, Makhaya Ntini, Wayne Parnell, Ashwell Prince, JJ Smuts, Kelly Smuts, Rusty Theron, Craig Thyssen, Lonwabo Tsotsobe.

Default A litmus test for the CLT20

In its third season, can the league overcome the challenges of unfamiliar teams and viewer fatigue to build a successful tournament?

ack in early April, when the fourth season of the IPL took off with TV channels still endlessly looping MS Dhoni's World Cup-sealing six, the league was supposed to be a test of viewers' appetite for the game. Over the next month and a half, with TV ratings for the blockbuster plunging, there were two common explanations: the reshuffling of the squads which left fans struggling to identify with the teams, and viewer fatigue from an overdose of cricket. For the Champions League T20, those two concerns are multiplied.

While with the IPL, it was a matter of getting used to Rahul Dravid turning out for Rajasthan Royals instead of Royal Challengers Bangalore, in the CLT20, entirely new teams unfamiliar to fans outside their home country show up each year. The organisers have tried to deal with the problem by steadily increasing the number of star-heavy IPL teams over the years and by introducing a qualifying phase to weed out some of the low-profile teams.

With Sri Lanka champions Ruhuna and New Zealand's entry Auckland eliminated, some of the tournament's global appeal is lost, with sides from only five countries making it to the main draw. Still, that initial cull of teams should lead to tighter matches - sides from New Zealand and Sri Lanka have been at the receiving end of five of the six biggest losses (in terms of runs) in the past two seasons. It has also provided a week of building up to the main event, in which most squads have at least a handful of recognisable faces.

The problem of viewer fatigue, especially with the primary target audience of Indian viewers, is going to be harder to deal with. At least before the IPL, Indian fans were on a high after a successful World Cup; before the CLT20, Indian fans had to endure their team's worst tour in living memory, a two-month ordeal where the headlines dealt almost exclusively with failures and fractures.

The ceaseless cycle of cricket has also robbed the tournament of some its biggest draws. Sachin Tendulkar, an unparalleled crowd-puller, is out with a toe injury, and of the handful of players who scooped up $2million or more at the IPL auction this year, Rohit Sharma is missing, having fractured a finger, and the availability of Gautam Gambhir remains uncertain as he recovers from a concussion.

One thing in the CLT20's favour is that the teams and players take the tournament extremely seriously. Unlike, say, FIFA's Club World Cup which is seen as a trinket by the European behemoths like Manchester United and Barcelona, with the tournament's US$5 million winners' purse considered small change. The $2.5m bounty on offer in the CLT20, though, dwarfs anything on offer in domestic cricket, and has the ability to completely transform a non-IPL team's financial fortunes. Even the $200,000 appearance money will be a massive boost for cash-strapped sides like Leicestershire, whose campaign lasted all of two days.

As for the players, especially those who don't play international cricket, few tournaments provide as good a platform for spring-boarding to the big time, a sentiment expressed last year by South African side Lions' captain Alviro Petersen. "When we got to the final [of the domestic T20 tournament], we relaxed a little because we knew we were in the Champions League and didn't go out wholeheartedly to win it,"

Not only are the players entitled to a healthy chunk of the prize money, the tournament also provides the possibility of a life-changing IPL contract. Kieron Pollard became Twenty20's poster boy after his exploits in the inaugural CLT20 two years ago, while South Africa's Davy Jacobs pocketed $190,000 a year after providing Warriors a series of rocket-fuelled starts in last year's tournament in South Africa.

The organisers are also aggressively promoting the tournament. Like last year, they have an A-list Bollywood star spearheading the TV campaign, with Shah Rukh Khan constantly reminding everyone that the match starts at eight o'clock, so "don't be late o'clock." Billboards across Indian cities have been hawking the tournament, which kicks off with an opening ceremony featuring hip hop stars Ludacris, Jay Sean and Flo rida.

The response hasn't been great so far, gauging from the thin crowds that showed up in Hyderabad for the qualifiers. Royal Challengers Bangalore and Chennai Super Kings, two of the most consistent IPL teams in the last three years, should be able to pull in much bigger crowds over the next few weeks though. The two teams have the shortest odds on most betting sites, and a successful run from either will provide the ratings boost the organisers crave.

Default NOTTABLE PLAYERS:

Meet the Champions League T20 contenders

The qualification round is done and dusted. Ten teams line up for the main draw of the Champions League. Here is how they stack up

Chennai Super Kings
How they made it: Winners of IPL 2011
Captain: MS Dhoni (Squad)
Headliner: R Ashwin
Odds: 4/1

Chennai have made consistency their hallmark, a considerable achievement in the unpredictable climes of Twenty20. They have marched to title wins in all tournaments they have contested in the last two years - two IPLs and the 2010 Champions League - a period in which their captain also laid claim to the biggest prize in limited-overs cricket. MS Dhoni's Midas touch wore off drastically in England, but a return to the Chennai yellows should help banish the blues. He regained his batting mojo at the back-end of that tour, as did Suresh Raina, Chennai's other heavy-weight India international. Michael Hussey walked on water on Australia's recent tour of Sri Lanka, and will dictate terms at the top of a muscular batting line-up. M Vijay and S Badrinath will look at this tournament as a chance to set the agenda for the upcoming Indian domestic season, and potentially a return to India colours. The seam attack, spearheaded by the well-rested Doug Bollinger and Albie Morkel, wears a fresh look. But if the qualifier round was anything to go by, spin could hold the key and R Ashwin, last year's Player of the Tournament, could be Dhoni's weapon of choice.

Royal Challengers Bangalore
How they made it: Runners-up in the IPL
Captain: Daniel Vettori (Squad)
Headliner: Chris Gayle
Odds: 9/2

The only team to have made it to all three seasons of the Champions League T20, Bangalore have an overseas cast of A-list Twenty20 stars. The acquisition of Chris Gayle two weeks into the IPL jumpstarted their campaign after they limped out of the starting gate, and Bangalore put together a seven-match winning streak, the longest in four editions lf the tournament's history. Domestic talent remains thin despite the presence of Virat Kohli and the big bucks splurged on Saurabh Tiwary. The absence of the injured Zaheer Khan has also eroded the strength of their Indian contingent.

Mumbai Indians
How they made it: Finished third in IPL 2011
Captain: Harbhajan Singh (Squad)
Headliner: Kieron Pollard
Odds: 6/1

Owned by the richest man in India and usually captained by Sachin Tendulkar, Mumbai have been one of the highest profile franchises in the IPL. After an indifferent first two seasons, they got their act together in the third, dominating the tournament before faltering in the final. They were the pace-setters for much of the 2011 season as well, winning eight of the first ten games, before fading to finish third. In Lasith Malinga and Kieron Pollard, they have two of the most dangerous Twenty20 players, but injuries to three of their biggest domestic stars, two of them tournament-ending, will worry them. Tendulkar and Rohit Sharma have been ruled out, while Harbhajan Singh hasn't played since an abdomen injury early in the England tour. Eyebrows were raised when, on the eve of the tournament, they were allowed to field five foreign players due to the number of injuries in the squad.

Kolkata Knight Riders
How they made it: Placed fourth in IPL 2011, and one of the three qualifiers
Captain: Jacques Kallis (Squad)
Headliner: Yusuf Pathan
Odds: 7/1

After three disappointing IPL seasons, a new-look Kolkata Knight Riders put in a commendable performance in the tournament's fourth edition and made it past the group stage for the first time, only to be thwarted by Mumbai Indians in the Eliminator. They barely made it past the qualifier stage of the Champions League without full-time leader Gautam Gambhir, and Eoin Morgan, who are both out with injuries. However, stand-in captain Jacques Kallis is more than capable of providing solidity with the bat - as he showed in the IPL, scoring 424 runs at 35.33 - while Yusuf Pathan, Ryan ten Doeschate and Brad Haddin will handle the big-hitting requirements. Manoj Tiwary's resurgent domestic season earned him a comeback into the Indian team, and he will continue to control the middle order. Shakib Al Hasan and Iqbal Abdulla formed a miserly spin duo in the IPL and are set to continue that trend in the Champions League. The game-breaker, though, is likely to be Yusuf whose fearsome hitting can decide games in a matter of minutes.

South Australia
How they made it: Winners of the Big Bash 2010-11
Captain: Michael Klinger (Squad)
Headliner: Shaun Tait
Odds: 12/1

The South Australia Redbacks are far from the glamour boys of Australian cricket. Success has been rare for the side in recent years, but under the new coach Darren Berry, they have come to life. By winning the 2010-11 Big Bash final they secured their first piece of silverware in 15 years, and earned a place at the Champions League for the second consecutive time. They have lost the aggressive batsman Aiden Blizzard and their star overseas player, Kieron Pollard, to the Mumbai Indians, but while they are short on star power, there is plenty of talent in the squad. Shaun Tait, Adil Rashid and Nathan Lyon are proven Twenty20 bowlers, while Callum Ferguson and Daniel Christian are also key men. There will be teams that underestimate the Redbacks, and that could work in their favour.

New South Wales
How they made it: Runners-up at the Big Bash 2010-11
Captain: Simon Katich (Squad)
Headliner: David Warner
Odds: 13/2

The 2009 champions are back, having failed to qualify for last year's tournament. Consistently one of the strongest performing sides in Australia's domestic cricket, the Blues have a deep well of national talent they can call on, but they will be without Brett Lee, Brad Haddin and Doug Bollinger, all of whom are playing for IPL teams. Even so, 11 of members of the state's squad have played for Australia in one form or another. Shane Watson and David Warner will form a fearsome opening partnership, while an attack boasting Stuart Clark, Nathan Hauritz and Australia's future pace-bowling stars - Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc - is a fine mix. New South Wales deserve to start the tournament as one of the favourites.

Cape Cobras
How they made it: Winners of the Standard Bank Pro20
Captain: Justin Kemp (Squad)
Headliner: Owais Shah
Odds: 12/1

The Cobras are making their second appearance at the Champions League in three years, and arrive armed with names such as Herschelle Gibbs, Justin Kemp and Charl Langeveldt. Their squad is further bolstered by Owais Shah, who was the highest overall run-getter in the Pro20 competition last year. With their national stars Dale Steyn, JP Duminy and Robin Peterson joining the squad, they boast one of the strongest line-ups in the tournament. Their biggest area of concern will be juggling the national trio with the rest of their team. On paper, they are set to go far in this competition with quality seam bowlers like Vernon Philander, handy spinners like Justin Ontong and hard-hitters like Richard Levi.

Warriors
How they made it: Runners up at the Standard Bank Pro20
Captain: Johan Botha (Squad)
Headliner: Rusty Theron
Odds: 14/1

The Warriors are the only South African team to qualify for the Champions League on two successive occasions and have a lot to live up to following their performance in last year's event. On home soil, they became the darlings of the competition and made it all the way to the final, before losing to Chennai Super Kings. They have had a rough ride since then and failed to defend either of their two domestic titles. But they are looking forward to a fresh start with a new coach at the helm, after Russell Domingo was named national assistant coach in June. Piet Botha takes a talent-laden team to the tournament with an impressive mix of veterans like Mark Boucher and Nicky Boje, and youngsters like Andrew Birch and Lyall Meyer. The Warriors also have an array of national stars and the likes of Lonwabo Tsotsobe and Colin Ingram will be relied upon if they hope to reach the knockout stages.

Trinidad & Tobago
How they made it: Winners of the Caribbean T20, and one of the three qualifiers
Captain: Daren Ganga (squad)
Headliner: Darren Bravo
Odds: 11/1

T&T were the surprise package of the inaugural Champions League in 2009, strutting to the final on the back of a cavalier, flair-filled brand of cricket. That tournament launched Kieron Pollard into Twenty20 stardom; perhaps this edition will do the same for one of the raft of exciting young batsmen in the side. T&T may be without their two biggest names - Pollard and Dwayne Bravo - but retain a dozen players who were part of that barnstorming run in 2009, giving them a side that has experience of both big matches and Indian conditions. While the batting contains some of the best young Caribbean talent - Adrian Barath, Darren Bravo and Lendl Simmons - the bowling has the much-improved Ravi Rampaul backing a spin-heavy attack. Their dominant showing in the qualifier, where they won both their games, is indicative of the form they are in.

Somerset
How they made it: Runners-up in the Friends Life t20, and one of the three qualifiers
Captain: Alfonso Thomas (squad)
Key player: Peter Trego
Odds: 12/1

Defeat in the CB40 final at Lord's, two days before the start of the Champions League, enhanced Somerset's reputation as the bridesmaids of county cricket. It was their fifth second place finish across all formats in two seasons. "I'm out of answers," Marcus Trescothick, their captain, said. Some of the answers came in their heart-warming display in the qualifying stage, where two surprise wins propelled them into the main draw. They were without three key players for the qualifiers: Trescothick, who doesn't travel overseas anymore, Craig Kieswetter and Jos Buttler. The latter two are on England duty and leave big holes in the line-up, though they might appear later if the event. Alfonso Thomas will need to use all his experience to lead the side and his bowling - bolstered by IPL experience - will be vital. Peter Trego is an allrounder to keep an eye on while Steve Snell, the wicketkeeper, was playing Minor Counties cricket last month. Both of them had big roles to play in the qualification round and are likely to continue the good work.

Ten men who could surprise

ESPNcricinfo picks some of the lesser-known players that could spring a surprise or two in the Champions League

Ambati Rayudu, Mumbai Indians

Just 25 years old, Ambati Rayudu has already seen some dramatic fluctuations in his career. From leading India at the Under-19 level, he went to being cast out by the Indian board for choosing to join the Indian Cricket League. By the time he took the BCCI's amnesty offer in 2009, and signed to play for Mumbai Indians in the 2010 IPL, most had forgotten he was once touted as an India prospect. Two years of big scoring in the IPL - he was Mumbai's third-highest run-getter in 2010 and their second-highest in 2011 - have brought him back into the limelight, and his recovery reached a crescendo when he won Mumbai their last league game of the 2011 IPL with a six off the last ball. Though it is his Twenty20 exploits that have earned him most recognition, Rayudu is not per se a big hitter. He gets his runs through orthodox strokes, and when he innovates it is usually with cheeky flicks and cuts.

Iqbal Abdulla, Kolkata Knight Riders

Iqbal Abdulla, IPL 2011's Under-23 player of the tournament, played a crucial role for Kolkata Knight Riders on both offensive and defensive fronts. He was miserly with his left-arm spin, conceding only 6.10 runs an over - the fourth most economical bowler of those who sent down fifty overs or more in the tournament. He was also Kolkata's leading wicket-taker, with 16 wickets at 19.06, and had the scalps of batsmen like Kumar Sangakkara, Adam Gilchrist, David Hussey and JP Duminy to his credit. The side's confidence in Abdulla was evident during the CLT20 qualifiers, when he opened the bowling in both games.

Saurabh Tiwary, Royal Challengers Bangalore

Mumbai Indians' run to the final of the 2010 IPL, after having failed to get to the knock-out rounds in the previous two seasons, had a lot to do with the contributions of Rayudu and Saurabh Tiwary. A big-hitting left-hand batsman, who was part of the team that won the 2008 Under-19 World Cup, Tiwary's image was enhanced by the fact that he hailed from the same state as India's captain MS Dhoni, had long hair like Dhoni did in his younger days, and played in the same inelegant yet effective manner. In the 2010 IPL, he plundered 419 runs which earned him a call-up to India's one-day side, and when the players were auctioned again in 2011 Royal Challengers Bangalore were willing to cough up $1.6 million for him, more than they did for any other player. Tiwary, though, did not go past fifty once in the tournament and had a strike-rate of less than 100. His India prospects have also taken a dive after he was ignored for the one-dayers in West Indies and England, and the Champions League is an opportunity for him to prove he is worth the exorbitant price Bangalore paid for him.

Shadab Jakati, Chennai Super Kings

Shadab Jakati, a left-arm spinner, has played a significant role in Chennai Super Kings' strategy of stifling the opposition of runs with slow bowling. He was on the expensive side in the early part of IPL 2011, but improved as the tournament progressed. In the second-half of the group stage, apart from an off day against Delhi Daredevils, his economy rate hovered between 5.50 and 7.50 and he managed to claim big players like Shane Watson and Brendon McCullum after they had got off to starts. He made a telling contribution against Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final, trapping AB de Villiers lbw and taking a return-catch off Luke Pomersbach, while conceding only 21 from his four overs.

Daniel Harris, South Australia

An opening batsman, Daniel Harris is strong square through the offside and a sharp fielder. He was named South Australia's Twenty20 player of the year for 2010-11, following his strong showing in the Big Bash. Harris topped the tournament's batting charts with 304 runs at 60.80, and hit 12 sixes in seven innings, second only to Chris Gayle. The highlight of his Twenty20 season was a blistering 70 against Western Australia in Perth, which came off 37 balls and contained nine fours and three sixes. If South Australia are to do better than last year's semi-final finish in the CLT20, Harris' success at the top of the order could be vital.

Patrick Cummins, New South Wales

An 18-year-old new-ball bowler, Patrick Cummins made his debut in all three formats for New South Wales earlier this year. He picked up 11 wickets at 14.09 in six Big Bash matches, while conceding only 6.59 runs an over, to finish No. 1 on the tournament's bowling charts. He reserved his best for the business end of the competition, destroying Tasmania in the preliminary final with figures of 4 for 16 - the best spell in Big Bash 2010-11. In June, he was named in Cricket Australia's list of contracted players for 2011-12, the youngest player to be offered a central contract since the current system was introduced in 1998.

Peter Trego, Somerset

A hard-hitting allrounder who bowls medium pace, Peter Trego proved quite handy for Somerset with ball (v Auckland) and then bat (v Kolkata) during the CLT20 qualifiers. He had kicked off his Friends Life t20 2011 season with a knock of 55 from 37 balls against Hampshire that included three sixes, and went on to score 304 runs in the tournament, one of three Somerset batsmen to go past 300. Trego's role in the side gains further importance with Somerset missing four key batsmen in Marcus Trescothick, Craig Kieswetter, Jos Buttler and Kieron Pollard for various reasons.

Samuel Badree, Trinidad & Tobago

Legspinner Samuel Badree has not managed to make a mark in first-class cricket, having only played 11 more first-class games since making his debut back in 2001-02. The Twenty20 format though has given his career a new lease of life: he first impressed for Trinidad & Tobago in the Stanford Super Series in 2008, and has since led a spin-heavy T&T attack in their Twenty20 tournaments. Badree is known more for his ability to keep the runs down than take wickets. In the 2010 Caribbean T20, he took only five wickets, less than several of his team-mates, but his remarkable economy-rate of 3.90 was the best of any bowler in the tournament. His miserliness has already been on display in the Champions League qualifiers, where he had figures of 2 for 7 in his four overs in T&T's match against Leicestershire.

Richard Levi, Cape Cobras

A quick-scoring opening batsman, Richard Levi played a prominent role in Cape Cobras' winning campaign in the 2010-11 Pro20 Series in South Africa. He was the side's second-highest run-getter, with 258 runs from eight innings at a strike-rate of 145.76. His 60 off 31 balls in the semi-final helped Cobras chase 223 against Titans and he scored an important 45 in the final versus Warriors. His strong domestic season earned him a place in the South Africa Emerging Players squad for the recent tournament in Australia, where he scored an unbeaten century in a three-day game against New Zealand A. Levi was part of the Cobras squad that came to India to play the 2009 Champions League, but did not get a game. This time, he is likely to play a big role in their campaign.

JJ Smuts, Warriors

Jon-Jon Trevor Smuts has struggled to find consistency in his short career as an opening batsman who also bowls left-arm spin. A poor Pro20 Series in 2009-10 meant he was consigned to the bench for the 2010 Champions League. He bounced back in the 2010-11 season, leading the run-charts for Warriors in their run to the Pro20 final, and going at just 6.58 an over with the ball. However, his form dipped again at the Emerging Players Tournament where he had a highest score of 39. He will have to dig himself out of that slump because with Davy Jacobs playing for Mumbai Indians in this year's Champions League, he will have to take the lead in getting Warriors off to solid starts. Also in the Warriors squad is his younger brother Kelly Smuts, who scored a half-century on Twenty20 debut in the Pro20 final.
