Selecao comeback ends U.S. dream
Updated: June 28, 2009, 3:00 AM ET JOHANNESBURG -- Lucio scored a late goal to give Brazil a 3-2 win over the upstart United States and a second straight Confederations Cup title Sunday. The Brazil captain headed in a corner from Elano in the 84th minute to help the five-time world champions hold off a spirited American team that had taken a 2-0 lead at halftime. Luis Fabiano scored two goals in the second half to put Brazil back in the match after Clint Dempsey and Landon Donovan had given the Americans the lead. Brazil, which won its third Confederations Cup title, looked like a beaten team in the first half, creating little and being constantly stymied by the United States defense and goalkeeper Tim Howard. But Fabiano started the comeback in the 46th minute as Brazil's "Beautiful Game" burst into life. The striker collected a pass from Ramires before turning and shooting past defender Jay DeMerit for his fourth goal of the tournament. He added a fifth in the 74th, heading in a rebound after Kaka's cross was kicked against the crossbar by Robinho. Dempsey, who also scored in the 2-0 semifinal win over Spain, gave the Americans the lead in the 10th minute by redirecting a cross from Jonathan Spector. Donovan added the second by finishing off some nice passing play with Charlie Davies on a fast counterattack in the 27th. Spector started the unthinkable after only 10 minutes, running down the right and sending a low cross into the area. Dempsey, who had plenty of room to maneuver, raised his right leg and put just enough of a touch on the ball to alter the direction and send it past a diving Julio Cesar. Donovan then got possession at his own end shortly after Maicon had sent in a corner for Brazil from the right. The United States midfielder ran up the middle, passed to Davies and then reclaimed the ball from his teammate before beating Julio Cesar. The Americans appeared to get some luck in the 60th when Kaka headed a cross from Andre Santos to the near post. Howard stepped back into his goal and knocked the shot off the underside of the crossbar and then grabbed it safely in his arms. Kaka yelled at the referee and his linesman, arguing that the ball has crossed the line before Howard was able to get to it, and television replays appeared to show he was correct. In the third-place match, Spain rallied to beat host South Africa 3-2 in extra time in Rustenburg |

Brazil Fight Back To Beat USA And Lift Confederations Cup
The Americans made it tough, but quality told for the Selecao. Jun 28, 2009 4:29:32 PM Photo Gallery Zoom FIFA Confederations Cup: Luis Fabiano, USA - Brazil (PA) Related Links USA 2-3 Brazil Confederations Cup Home Brazil fought back from 2-0 down to lift the Confederations Cup of 2009 with a thrilling victory in Johannesburg. It was a deserved win for the Selecao, but one that also saw the USA show their counter-attacking proficiency in the first half. Clint Dempsey had the first real chance when he flashed a shot wide from twenty yards, but Brazil led up to the ten minute mark by placing pressure on the American final third. But the USA found an excellent piece of cutting edge in the tenth minute to take the lead, Jonathan Spector launching a deep, deep cross that Lucio failed to deal with. There was Clint Dempsey to guide the ball past an oddly motionless Julio Cesar. The Brazilians raised their game heading towards the half hour mark, but in fact this was to be their undoing. When Robinho surrendered the ball on the edge of the box in the 27th minute, the Americans launched a superb counter that culminated in Charlie Davies squaring an excellent one-two ball to Landon Donovan. The ex-Bayern man, still having it all to do, managed a wonderful first touch to dink the ball past Lucio and then drill home from the edge of the area. Andre Santos could have pulled one back five minutes later as the Brazilians continued the pressure, but the frustration was clear as he picked up a needless booking soon after. Robinho's long-range effort closed the half, though, with the impression that Brazil lacked end product despite a surfeit of possession and half-chances. That was to change almost immediately after the restart. The hitherto-quiet Luis Fabiano netted Brazil's first of the evening with an excellent turn-and-shot from the edge of the box that caught Demerit flat-footed and proved too much for the impressive Tim Howard. The hour mark approached with Brazil beginning to dominate, Tim Howard having plenty to do, but Davies also had a chance at the other end that Julio Cesar had to parry. That wasn't before Brazil should have equalized, though. A swooping cross to Kaka saw the midfielder head home off the crossbar, with Tim Howard pawing it off the line. It actually seemed to go across, though, but the assistant failed to indicate a goal. Still, Brazil managed the leveler soon afterwards, Kaka being involved in the buildup. An excellent cross on the run found Robinho, who scooped the ball off the crossbar; Luis Fabiano was there to head home the rebound. American hearts were well and truly broken ten minutes later as Elano's cross was met by a thundering header from Lucio, and Brazil seemed on course for victory. Onyewu came close with a header at the other end, but Brazil had done enough in the second period to make it a third Confederations Cup. The USA, meanwhile, will be bitterly disappointed, but have certainly won the respect of the footballing world after a gutsy and technically proficient tournament. |

Confederations Cup MVP Kaka Hopes To Continue Winning With Real Madrid
The Brazilian midfield wizard has been voted the best player of the Confederations Cup and he is eager to continue his winning streak. Jun 28, 2009 7:45:59 PM < New Real Madrid megastar, Kaka has kicked-off off his post-AC Milan life on a triumphant note after helping Brazil to a 3-2 win over the United States to lift the FIFA Confederations Cup on Sunday night. The €67 million man was also voted the best player of the tournament ahead of top scorer, Luis Fabiano and Clint Dempsey and he hopes that this is just the beginning of another illustrious chapter to his footballing life. “I’ve already started to win as a Real Madrid player,” he told reporters during the post-match banter, “but I will talk more about Madrid on Tuesday when I am officially presented at the club. This Confederations Cup win is a good start. “I am very happy to have played my part for the team in the final of this competition. It’s because Brazil became the champions that I was voted man of the match and the best player of the tournament. “Now, I hope that I can continue in the same manner in the new phase of my career,” he added. Kaka could have capped off an even more remarkable evening had his 60th minute goal, when Brazil were trailing 2-1, been awarded by the linesman. “I don’t know if anyone saw the television replays because I don’t know if the ball crossed the line or not,” he said. “It would have been fantastic to score a legal goal. These are aspects that FIFA can check and improve on. It would have been important for me to have scored this goal.” The 27-year-old now joins fellow Brazilians, Adriano (Germany 2005), Ronaldinho (Mexico 1999) and Denilson (Saudi Arabia 1997) as previous Confederation Cup Golden Ball winners. Other victors include Thierry Henry and Robert Pires |

Tevez reveals United ''pain'' and slams Fergie
By Soccernet staff <!-- end story header --><!-- begin left column --> <!-- begin page tools --> June 30, 2009 <!-- end page tools --><!-- begin story body --> <!-- template inline -->Carlos Tevez has revealed his ''pain'' at being stuck on the bench at Manchester United and blamed manager Sir Alex Ferguson for their failure to defend the Champions League title. EmpicsThe Argentine has spent time on the bench. The Argentine, who will leave Old Trafford this summer, was left on the bench against Barcelona as Ferguson chose to start with Cristiano Ronaldo, Park Ji-sung and Wayne Rooney in attack. However, the striker claims that Fergie's decision to leave him out of the Rome final backfired and caused the Red Devils to lose the chance to defend their trophy. "You cannot argue with Alex Ferguson," said Tevez. "He is like the president of England. It is impossible, you always lose. "But he made a mistake to leave me on the bench. That was the only final the team had lost since I had been at Manchester United." Tevez is expected to sign for Manchester City for £25m this week, but he insists he had little choice but to leave the champions. "My family knows how much I suffered at United. I could not arrive home after a match or a training session and forget my pain," he said. "It was not good and I transmitted all my sadness to them." |
