Good news, tweets Yuvraj


Yuvraj Singh revealed that the malignant lung tumour, for which he is undergoing chemotherapy in the Unites States, is "almost out of his system" after the first cycle of treatment.
"Got very good news from dr lawrence today! The tumor is almost way out of the system Aftr reading my todays scan !Second cycle has started," Yuvraj, being treated at the Boston Institute of Cancer Research, wrote on his twitter account.

The 30-year-old, who went to US last month, has gone bald during the treatment, which will go on till the last week of March before the process of rehabilitation starts in April.

The dashing batsman had earlier got a message from US cycling legend Lance Armstrong, whose own inspirational triumph over cancer is well-documented, wishing him a speedy recovery.

"Message from @lancearmstrong makes me feel better! Thank you lance means a lot hope we can meet," tweeted Yuvraj.

A photo of the Armstrong's message, posted by Yuvraj, read: "Yuvi, I want you to know that the entire LIVESTRONG team is here for you.

"We say it all the time, and truly believe in it: Knowledge is power, Unity is strength, and Attitude is everything. Please know that we are here to help you and your family in any way possible. Go Yuvi!! Livestrong."

Yuvraj was named Player of the Tournament in the World Cup, scoring 362 runs and grabbing 15 wickets in nine matches.

He has so far scored 8,051 runs in 274 one-dayers and 1,775 runs in 37 Tests since making his international debut in 2000.

After being diagnosed with the illness, Yuvraj has not played competitive cricket since taking part in two of three home Tests against the West Indies in November.

Yuvraj Singh has shown a "slightly better than expected" response to his first cycle of chemotherapy to counter a germ-cell tumour called mediastinal seminoma. His medical team in India and the USA will however arrive at a definitive conclusion after conducting a CT scan at the end of his nine weeks of treatment.

Explaining Yuvraj's progress, Dr Nitesh Rohatgi, a senior medical oncologist at Delhi's Max Cancer Centre who is co-ordinating the treatment with doctors in the USA, told ESPNcricinfo that Yuvraj's blood tests and X-rays were "positive and we know that the treatment is working".

Rohatgi was speaking after Yuvraj's upbeat tweet [below] late on Wednesday night about his progress. "We can only be certain after the CT scan at the end of the treatment," Rohatgi said. "We have to give him enough chemo to melt it [the tumour] all down and also to aim at preventing it from recurring."

The "Dr Lawrence" Yuvraj was referring to in his tweet is Dr Lawrence Einhorn, who headed the treatment of cycling champion Lance Armstrong in 1996. Armstrong had been diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of testicular cancer and was given a 40% chance of survival. Einhorn is regarded as the pioneer of life-saving treatment for testicular cancer, increasing survival levels up to 90%, and an expert in the chemotherapy used to tackle seminoma. Though he largely focusses on research these days, he has taken on Yuvraj's case. On Tuesday, Armstrong sent Yuvraj a personal message of support.

The chemotherapy that Yuvraj will undergo involves nine weeks of a combination of three cancer drugs - bleomycin, ciplatin and etoposide - in three cycles. He has finished the first of the cycles that included a combination of the drugs every day for five days and then, after a week's gap, two days of a different schedule of the drugs. A week's gap follows, at which point the next cycle begins with five straight days of the drugs. His second cycle began on Wednesday.

"The cycles work this way," Rohatgi said, "because you want to maximise effect and minimise side-effects. This is the most commonly used and the most effective treatment, and this is going to keep him most physically fit."

Once the after-effects of his first cycle of chemotherapy began to wear off, Yuvraj tried light rounds of cardio-vascular exercises, like jogging and cycling, in the gym. He had spoken to Rohatgi at length on Thursday, to understand the interpretations of the results of the first round of his chemotherapy.

Kumble visits ailing Yuvraj in US




Recovering from a malignant tumour between his lungs in the United States, Yuvraj Singh was paid a "surprise" visit by former skipper Anil Kumble.
"It was so nice of Jumbo to surprise me! Great motivation and a happy day spent with the legend," Yuvraj wrote on his twitter page, besides posting a picture of the two of them at the United States.

Last Saturday, actor and good friend, Ranvijay Singh also had paid him a visit.

"@RannvijaySingha came all the way to see me! Means a lot!," Yuvi had tweeted.

The left-handed batsman had earlier written on his page that his tumour was almost out of his system.

Yuvraj, who has been in Boston since January, is expected to be back on the field in May, according to his doctor Dr Einhorn, who also treated legendary cyclist Lance Armstrong, who had suffered from testicular cancer in 1996.

The 30-year-old Yuvraj's second cycle of chemotherapy has started and the process of rehabilitation would start in April.

The Punjab cricketer has not played competitive cricket since taking part in two of three home Tests against the West Indies in November after being diagnosed with the illness.

Yuvraj, who was named Player of the Tournament in the World Cup for scoring 362 runs and grabbing 15 wickets in nine matches, has so far scored 8,051 runs in 274 ODIs and 1,775 runs in 37 Tests. He made his international debut in 2000.
