Default "Yuvraj Singh Thirich varunnu, Oru Raajyathinte muzhuvan praarthanayude Karuthode..."

Yuvraj Singh has been diagnosed with cancer and is currently undergoing chemotherapy in the United States. A tumour on his lung was diagnosed as non-malignant late last year, but his physiotherapist has now confirmed that it is cancerous. Dr Jatin Chaudhary said it was "100% curable" and that Yuvraj would be "fit to be back on the field" in May.

"It is a rare tumour and is cancerous but it has been detected in stage 1 itself (Stage 0 refers to cancer that is just beginning, while stages 1 to 4 are progressively more advanced cancers)," Chaudhary, also an accupuncture specialist, told PTI.

"Doctors had to decide whether to continue medication or go for chemotherapy but since parts of the tumour are just above the artery of his heart, there was a danger that while running it could burst. But it is 100% curable.

"The doctors decided that he would have to undergo chemotherapy and he travelled to the US on January 26. End of March, he would undergo a CT scan and should recover by then."

Yuvraj hasn't played competitive cricket since the Tests against West Indies last November, when news of his tumour became public. He had originally hoped to make a comeback in the tri-series in Australia, but last month it was announced that he would not be fit in time for the IPL, which begins in April. "Thankfully no surgery is required, he is already a lot better than what he was and can't wait to be back on the cricket field.

"Once he is done with chemo in March, his rehabilitation would be complete by April end and he would be perfectly fit to play in May."

A Man-of-the-Series performance in India's World Cup win in 2011 has been sandwiched by two forgettable years for Yuvraj. He battled with form and fitness in 2010, losing his place in the side. After the World Cup, several injuries curtailed his appearances for India, before the detection of the tumour forced his current absence from cricket.

      "Yuvraj had no lifestyle issues"

The doctors treating Yuvraj Singh for his cancer insisted the Indian batsman did not fall sick because of any indiscipline in his lifestyle.
The cancer diagnosed for the World Cup hero is believed to be the rarest of rare cases - 'Extragonadal Seminoma'. This form of cancer constitutes less than one per cent of all cancers, medical experts said.
Dr Nitesh Rohatgi, who is leading the team looking after Yuvraj, pointed out that the disease originated from the cricketer's heart but that was not due to any abuse in his lifestyle.
Yuvraj's lifestyle and late-night parties have often kept him in the news and he is a hit with the gossip pages of newspapers across the country. However, Dr Rohatgi stressed that the cancer, which stands a 95 per cent chance of being cured, was not fallout of any excesses in his lifestyle.
The doctor said Yuvraj has reacted very well to treatment: "He has shown tremendous courage and he should be back to active training in 10 weeks. I am sure Yuvraj the person would be back soon and Yuvraj the cricketer would return as well.
"He has been reading a lot (including Lance Armstrong's autobiography), playing video games, jogging and running."
Dr Rohatgi said Yuvraj has coped with the situation a lot better than others in his position, thanks to his fitness, a fact that was seconded by Dr Anupama Hooda, Head of Oncology at a New Delhi hospital.
"Yuvraj is obviously not as fit as he was a year ago but he is coping well because he is so strong mentally. He has started jogging and running, which means he would take less time to get back to full training," Dr Rohatgi said.
Yuvraj, on Wednesday, would have completed three weeks of his nine-week chemotherapy stint in the United States and his doctors are hopeful that the 30-year-old would return to action sooner rather than later.

      "BCCI taking care of Yuvraj"

Yuvraj Singh’s manager said on Monday that the Indian cricketer’s cancer treatment was being taken care of by the BCCI.
Sports Minister Ajay Maken had earlier tweeted that the Government would help the ailing Indian cricketer in his battle for cancer. Given the obvious differences between the Sports Ministry and the BCCI, this appeared to be a sensitive case.

However, Yuvraj’s manager Nishant Arora clarified the ‘finances and everything else’ was being looked after by the BCCI. The board had been made aware of the Indian southpaw’s medical condition much before the rest of the world got to know.

“Yuvraj is contracted with the BCCI and they are like his guardians. The board has been like true guardians to Yuvi -- they have been in constant touch with him and his family, be it the president or the secretary. The BCCI is taking care of his treatment -- finances and everything else,” Arora said at a press conference at a New Delhi hospital.
Yuvraj, who won the Man of the Tournament in the World Cup last year with 362 runs and 15 wickets, has been undergoing chemotherapy since January 25 this year for a condition called ‘Extragonadal Seminoma’ located between his lungs rather than in his lungs. The doctors treating the cricketer are hopeful of curing the cancer.

Meanwhile, Arora and Yuvraj’s doctors pleaded with the media to leave the flamboyant all-rounder alone and not bother his family with any questions. The media have wanted to know where exactly in the US Yuvraj was located, speculating on Boston or New York.

“We would not reveal where Yuvraj is unless he himself wants you to know. I know everyone wishes him well but you have to respect his privacy,” Arora said.

      "Yuvraj's treatment was delayed"

Yuvraj Singh's father Yograj Singh lamented that his son's treatment was delayed and that Yuvraj had not taken his advice seriously.
"I don't want to blame anyone. But I feel that things could have been different. If you recall, two years back when Yuvi was playing in a T20 match at Mohali and played a match-winning innings, in which after hitting a six he came running towards Suresh Raina and could be seen coughing badly," Yograj recalled how the early signs of his son's illness were not picked up seriously.

Struggling to hold back his tears, the former Test cricketer said he had then advised Yuvraj to get a thorough medical check up done, but he had brushed it aside saying he was not a kid and that he was alright.

"But I knew that something was wrong. Six months back the doctor who saw the laboratory reports of Yuvraj had pleaded that he should be taken to the US for treatment. With folded hands, the doctor said that best treatment is available in the US, but I don't blame anyone," he said speaking at his residence.

Yuvraj is considered closer to his mother Shabnam Singh, who lives in Gurgaon and is currently with his son who is receiving treatment in the United States. Yograj lives separately in Chandigarh.

He, however, felt that ultimately the right thing had happened, that Yuvraj did not play in Australia. Otherwise matters could have turned worse.

Trying to put up a brave face, Yograj said that he had spoken to his son, who was in good spirits.

"He is responding well to the treatment and God willing we should see him back in action very soon," he said.

Yuvraj's illness Yuvraj has also resulted in stronger bonding between him and his father than ever before.

"Yuvi is lion-hearted. He is a sher (lion). You will see him roar once again (on the field)," said his father.

Yuvraj had played a stellar role in India's ODI World Cup triumph last year.

The 30-year-old left-hander has been in the US since last month being treated for what was earlier claimed by his family to be a tumour in the lungs.

'Government to help Yuvraj fight cancer'

Sports Minister Ajay Maken has promised Government help to Yuvraj Singh, who is undergoing chemotherapy in the United States to recover from lung cancer.
"Wish Yuvraj a speedy recovery! Asking officials to find the quantum and nature of help required. Government should & will help him," Maken tweeted.

Yuvraj, who played a stellar role in India's ODI World Cup triumph last year, has been diagnosed with cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy at the Cancer Research Institute in Boston.

The 30-year-old left-hander has been in US since last month being treated for what was earlier claimed to be a tumour in the lungs by his family.

His physiotherapist Dr Jatin Chaudhary has, however, assured that the ailment is curable and the batsman would be fit to resume cricket in May.

"It is a rare tumour and is cancerous but it has been detected in stage one itself. Doctors had to decide whether to continue medication or go for chemotherapy but since parts of the tumour are just above the artery of his heart, there was a danger that while running it could burst. But it is 100 per cent curable," Chaudhary said.

"The doctors decided that he would have to undergo chemotherapy and he travelled to the US on January 26. End of March, he would undergo a CT scan and should recover by then. After that it is just some rehabilitation in April before he is fit to be back on the field in May," Chaudhary added.

"Thankfully no surgery is required, he is already a lot better than what he was and can't wait to be back on the cricket field."

Yuvraj, who was Player of the Tournament in the World Cup last year with 362 runs, 15 wickets and four Man-of-the-Match awards, has also been taking ayurvedic medicines to battle the disease.

Yuvraj has played 37 Tests, scoring 1775 runs at an average of 34.80.

He has 8051 runs at an average of 37.62 from his 274-match ODI career. In 23 Twenty20s, Yuvraj has scored 567 runs at 31.50.

"Once he is done with chemo in March, his rehabilitation would be complete by April end and he would be perfectly fit to play in May," Chaudhary has said.
      PCA assures help

Punjab Cricket Association has also assured full help to Yuvraj Singh.

"The PCA will extend full help to Yuvraj. He is our best cricketer and we are with him in this hour of crisis," PCA secretary, M P Pandove told PTI.

He said Yuvraj's illness had been discussed between the PCA and the BCCI and all his expenditure will be taken care of.

"We are all hoping that he gets well and plays for India and Punjab very soon," Pandove said.

Asked if the PCA had got in touch with his family, Pandove said, "We have sent mails to them since his mother is not in the country at the moment".

Commenting further on Yuvraj's illness, Pandove said, "It is very unfortunate that such a thing has happened. Yuvraj was at the peak of his career. We wish he gets well soon."
