Default Stand Up ~ An Opinion

      Venue ~ Kairali, Thrissur
      Showtime ~ 02:30 PM
      Status ~ 10%

When I went to watch this movie, I thought this movie was about a Stand Up comedian and the issues she encountered in her life. I am kinda right in a way but the prominence was never given to the Stand Up Comedy part. So this turned out to be a surprise for me.

Director Vidhu Vincent opted for a non linear narrative where she introduces her to main protagonists, Keerthy Thomas (Nimisha Vijayan) as a budding Stand Up Comedian trying out an audition (if I am not wrong) while Diya (Rajisha Vijayan) is being taken to hospital after an incident. The first half swipes to n fro from past to present until we get a clear picture about what happened. Now the main topic of the movie is

and the entire focus of the movie is on that issue. This is where “Stand Up” gives us another reason behind the title (which is totally contrasting to the one I expected).

I don’t know whether this is a spoiler but I cannot write further without mentioning whats the movie ‘s basic theme. So those who want to watch the movie without any sort of spoilers can stop reading further . One of the main highlight of the movie is the sincerity of the makers while handling such a sensitive topic. There were many movies from different language where female victims are portrayed using various issues like acid attack, rape and other issues. Uyare is the latest example from Malayalam and Chhapaak is something thats gonna release soon in Hindi. The basic one line is similar in such movies where the victim goes through more heinous harassment from the society and how she is motivated (or self motivated) to fight back. Despite the clichéd process, Vidhu and her writer, Umesh, goes for an extensive detailing regarding the mental trauma undergone by the victim. Through various moments like the ones in the hospital, police station and home, we feel for Diya and thus establishes connection which is required for this movie. Being a woman, Vidhu as able to give a more sensitive image to the whole issue. This along with scintillating performance from Rajisha Vijayan just scored like anything. Also I felt the makers gave a realistic image regarding how the victim is discouraged the society as well as family to fightback without opting for gender bashing. Still I wish the maker could have thought out of the box and replaced Nimisha’s character with a male one. That would have given a very positive and fresh outlook to the whole issue. As negatives, I felt Vidhu was unable to clear away the basic clichés. There is a rich arrogant dad takes pride in his aristocracy, a sleazy & corrupted police officer, a good hearted female doctor, weak mum (or mums) etc which seems to be regular in such kind of fares. Also I personally didn’t like the idea of using a Stand Up stage to convey this story. I felt thats a bit too filmy. I felt Keerthy’s character could have developed a bit more just to a depth to her personality. I felt it was more of a rescuer’s role.

Seems like Rajisha Vijayan is on a roll this year. After a long gap since her second release, Georgettan’s Pooram, She came up with June, Finals and now Stand Up. 3 different but strong characters which displayed her versatility. Easily the best actress from the younger lot IMO. Actually its scintillating performance that helped the movie to cross minor loopholes/clichés. Nimisha Sajayan was dependable as the strong willed Keerthy Thomas. Venkitesh was slightly over the top with his eccentric character especially when you have already seen a Govind this year (which was brilliantly portrayed by Asif Ali). It was nice to see veteran actress, Seema (backed by Bhagyalakshmi’s dubbing) back onscreen. Then we have Arjun Ashokan, Sunil Sukhadha, Nisthar Sait (in a very stereotyped role)Seethulakshmi & Sajitha Madathil in supporting roles.

I honestly don’t recall any songs except the well shot one featuring the romance between Diya & Amal. The background score was apt. Other than the song which I mentioned, I honestly didn’t find anything exceptional in Tobin Thomas’s debut work as an independent cinematographer. Maybe its because we have seen such frames and color tones in many new gen movies. Still he did a good job. For a movie running also 105 minutes, the editing and pacing was perfect.

As I said, we might have seen many movies which portrays female victims but Stand Up is hugely recommended for its sincerity and emotional experience with Rajisha’s outstanding performance. I wished the film could have opted for a non festive season like Uyare and released with a more publicity. Considering the quality the movie possess, the movie required it!!
