Based on the Jack London novel, the movie follows Buck, a domesticated St. Bernard, that gets stolen from his master and his journey thenceforth through various masters into the wild... We have seen lots of movies over the years dedicated to dog love and yet 'call of the wild' does manage to stand tall on its own, thanks to impressive production values with topnotch CGI work and the visually arresting snow blanketed Yukon as background... The movie has a feel good vibe to it from start to finish and at many junctures, it feels like an old school christmas season movie...
Even though Buck is CGI, the realism of the creature and its expressions are pretty much uncannily lifelike... The viewers feel every emotion that Buck goes through... The underrated aspect in such movies is that the CGI is only as much effective as the reactions of the actors who originally act staring into thin air... And all the cast, from Harrison Ford to the cartoonish villain, deserve credits for the same...
Overall, a heartwarming tale of a dog's voyage in becoming his own master and a worthy one at that...
