Default Marakkar - Arabikadatinte Simham ~ An Opinion

      Venue ~ TCR Ragam
      Showtime ~ 10:30 AM
      Status ~ Housefull (50%)

Before getting into details, I would like to ask you, how many from this generation will actually enjoy Lawrence of Arabia? Many might claim it good just because it has a classic image and they don't want to look dumb. But seriously how many really will you expect to enjoy? Now the reason why I mentioned this film is because Priyadarshan is a self confessed David Lean fan who is master of visuals and drama with lengthy runtime and leisure pace.

Regarding, I will tell you whats the biggest issue. There is a sequence where Marakkar is being invited to the court with great pomp and respect. If it was Rajamouli movie, you would have seen the famous walk of Bahubali to court when his wife has been arrested. Instead here Priyadarshan opted for a bard's song describing Marakkar. Now I can't question the logic but that turned out to ineffective and thats the issue of this movie. But this is Priyadarshan style which I was expecting.

Priyan clearly mentioned that the approach is realistic eventhough there is an immense amount of imagination to tell the story of the historical character. Maybe its number of historic/fantasy movies where you can see cliches after cliches like treachery, loyalty, betrayal, backstabbing etc. In this movie, a chunk of the portion is a direct inspiration from Wolfgang Peterson's "Troy" including a scene featuring Mangathachan (Hareesh Peradi) & Marakkar. Now that synced well because this happens all over the world. But Priyan was unable to get out of his 90s mode where scenes should have a strong impact or punch. Take that scene from Oppam where a blind Jayaraman beats the hell outta 3-4 trained police officers. No matter how incredible that scene looks, it was shot well and had the necessary punch (also the build up plays a role). The narration lacked many factors like chemistry between the characters (didn't find one), a weak antagonist (Kaalpaani had 2 brilliant ones) and lack of build up to a scene. Despite of running close to 181 minutes, every scene looked rushed especially the last 20 mins. Maybe thats why none stayed in my mind except the first portions featuring Pranav. Yet, I honestly didn't find any unnecessary scenes as each scene connects well to the next. Also there wasn't much of Marakkar in person during the first half and some portions in second half.

On positive note, this is an actual visual spectacle. I don't mind saying the technical perfection is the best I have seen in Indian cinema, notches above Baahubali. The cast delivered and the war scenes were well choreographed. Also the drama is not bad considering the era. And accept or not, this is not a Pulimurugan which is meant for fans associations (not disrespect to them). Regarding the drama portion , I know many might find it boring from this generation. But for ours, its what we were catered to.

Speaking of performances, I felt Hareesh Peradi got the best character amongst all and he performed well. Eventhough Priyan claims thats it written with Thilakan in mind, I really don't think he missed him eventually. Arjun shined along with Ashok Selvan. The surprise package was easily Pranav Mohanlal who shone during his portions and gave a perfect launchpad for Mohanlal. Infact his Malayalam issues worked well to to attain the accent. Then there is a list of actors who performed well but didn't create a huge impact including late Nedumudi Venu. Last but not least, Mohanlal. I seriously don't think there was any scope for Mohanlal in this role. Infact his character looked more poor that Mammotty's Pazhashiraja.

The cinematography was topnotch and art direction was simply brilliant from Thiru and Sabu Cyril respectively. But editing by Ayyappan Nair was shabby. The choreography (both dance and action) were superb eventhough the one on one action sequence could have been tad better. The songs except Ila Veyil.... were superbly shot and placed well.

Marakkar seems to be a movie that couldn't sustain a gargantuan expectations at the end of the day. Other than the mentioned flaws, I found this movie easily watchable and requires a theatrical experience for the sheer dedicated effort made by the film makers to deliver a visual spectacle (its not an Odiyan or Maamangam by any means)!!!

      A good and well-balanced review!
BTW, I wholeheartedly agree with your opening statement regarding Lawrence of Arabia. I know many so-called cinephiles who admit that they can't stand Citizen Kane!
