Oru Semma Feeling!! Gautham Vasudev Menon is back again, with a feel-good fable tale which oozes out the romantic in you, though not up to the class and standards set by ‘Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya’. There isn’t much fresh to boast about its story, but GVM was smart enough to package it intelligently with genuine dose of humour, Illaiyaraja’s melodious tunes and decent performances from the lead cast, in making it an enjoyable romantic trail.

About the plot, it chronicles through the complicated love life of Varun (Jiiva) and Nithya (Samantha) who knows each other from childhood. They go through various phases of life, through lots of rough patches and will they unite after all their disarrays forms the crux.

It doesn’t offer anything innovative in its basic outline and might get a déjà vu feeling about you’ve seen it all before, but does have some significant changes from Menon’s usual route of love stories where the hero woos the heroine madly wherever she goes. Actually it’s the just the opposite formula that has been applied here with panache. Despite the deliberate changes, Gautham Menon does repeat many of his clichés at various junctures of the movie.

The way humour was utilized in the narrative was unfeigned and rightfully tickles your funny bone which was completely relatable, especially for youngsters. Though the characters are familiar enough, it lacked the much needed depth in its characterizations, which worked wonders for ‘Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya’. The genius of Gautham Menon in narrating a tale which spans over different timelines, with believable changes in their appearance and mannerism is visible again.

Cinematography was impressive as in most of Menon’s previous works. Editing was apt, though could have trimmed down the first half by 10 minutes. Music and re-recording by Ilaiyaraja takes us all the way back to his golden times with some really mellifluous tracks, with ‘Ennodu Vaa Vaa’ being the pick of the album. It was a welcome relief to see Gautham Menon visualizing songs without his usual street dancers!

Speaking about the acting, Jiiva was natural throughout the movie and has done a commendable job in portraying a character that spans from teenage to adulthood. Samantha looks absolutely stunning with her cute seraphic looks, but when it comes to acting she was just passable and tends to go overboard at times, especially when it comes to the emotional sequences. This is where ‘Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya’ made a difference, with the presence of a solid female lead like Trisha. But it’s Santhanam who steals the show with his impeccable comic timing, which really keeps us interested in the proceedings to a great extent. The spoof on Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya featuring Santhanam was extremely hilarious! Supporting cast was decent.

All in all, the ones who prefer watching feel-good romantic movies with adequate dose of humour, then this one’s tailor-made for them, despite all of its shortcomings. Gautham Menon’s innately honest making with his trademark stamped all over it, charming chemistry from the lead pair, Illaiyaraja’s vintage symphony and Santhanam’s terrific comic timing, makes it all the reasons for being another lovely movie from GVM!

Rating – 7.5/10
