MAN OF STEEL Photo Comes with New Description (http://geektyrant.com/news/2013/1/7/man-of-steel-photo-comes-with-new-description.html)

A few days ago a new image from Zack Snyder's Man of Steel surfaced online. Today we have an uncropped version of that photo to share with you showing off a large army behind Superman. It also came along with an interesting new story description which was translated from French to English via Google but I'm sure you'll get the gist of it...

A boy discovers he has supernatural powers and he was not born on Earth. Later, he undertakes a journey to understand where [he] comes from and why he was sent on our planet. But [he] will be a hero if he wants to save the world from total destruction and embody the hope for all mankind...
What I can't tell in the photo is if the military in the background is on Superman's side or against him. I'd like to think they are fighting with him, but we'll never know until we see the movie, or more information leaks out.

Christopher Nolan in Talks to Direct 'Interstellar' for Paramount and Warner Bros. (Exclusive)

According to multiple sources, Nolan has set his sights on a sci-fi project titled Interstellar, which he is in talks to direct and produce. The story involves time travel and alternate dimensions, and sees a group of explorers travel through a wormhole. The script is based on scientific theories developed by Kip Thorne, a theoretical physicist, gravitational physicist and astrophysicist at Caltech.

Dealmaking has been underway for months and is described as very complex, according to sources.

[/URL]

Interstellar is set up at Paramount but would be made by both Paramount and Warner Bros., where Nolan and his Syncopy banner are based and for which he has made the three Batman movies as well as Insomnia and Inception. (The Prestige was made for Disney.)

The script for Interstellar was written by Jonathan Nolan, Chris' brother, who worked on The Dark Knight Rises and The Dark Knight, as well as Prestige. Jonathan Nolan (known as Jonah) also has a "story by" credit for Memento, Chris Nolan’s breakout movie.

Steven Spielberg was previously attached to direct Interstellar and produce with Lynda Obst. It is unclear if Spielberg will remain involved, especially considering the director's planned next movie, Robopocalypse, was delayed indefinitely on Wednesday.

Regardless of how a deal shakes out, Interstellar has all the elements that seem to attract Nolan. Apart from his brother’s involvement, there is the complex and multi-layered nature of the story.

‘Lincoln’ leads Oscars with 12 nominations, ‘Life of Pi’ grabs 11

http://www.washingtonpost.com/rf/image_606w/2010-2019/WashingtonPost/2013/01/10/Production/WashingtonPost/Images/Oscar_Nominations_044b2.jpg

By Associated Press,

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — The Civil War saga “Lincoln” leads the Academy Awards with 12 nominations, including best picture, director for Steven Spielberg and acting honors for Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field and Tommy Lee Jones.
Also among the nine nominees for best picture Thursday: the old-age love story “Amour”; the Iran hostage thriller “Argo”; the independent hit “Beasts of the Southern Wild”; the slave-revenge narrative “Django Unchained”; the musical “Les Miserables”; the shipwreck story “Life of Pi”; the lost-souls romance “Silver Linings Playbook”; and the Osama bin Laden manhunt chronicle “Zero Dark Thirty.”

Harvey Weinstein produced two of the nine best picture nominees — “Django Unchained” and “Silver Linings Playbook” — and was naturally pleased.
“I am blown away! I can’t say thank you enough to the Academy for their support of our films,” he said in a statement. “We have a tremendous group of actors and filmmakers who we had the pleasure of working with this year and I am so happy that their achievements are being recognized.”
“Life of Pi” surprisingly ran second with 11 nominations, ahead of “Zero Dark Thirty” and “Les Miserables,” which had been considered potential front-runners.
More surprising were snubs in the directing category, where three favorites missed out: Ben Affleck for “Argo” and past Oscar winners Kathryn Bigelow for “Zero Dark Thirty” and Tom Hooper for “Les Miserables.” Bigelow was the first woman ever the win the directing Oscar for 2009’s “The Hurt Locker,” while Hooper won a year later for “The King’s Speech.”
The best-picture category also had surprising omissions. The acclaimed first-love tale “Moonrise Kingdom” was left out and only got one nomination, for original screenplay. Also snubbed for best-picture was “The Master,” a critical favorite that did manage three acting nominations for Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams and Philip Seymour Hoffman.
Two-time winner Spielberg earned his seventh directing nomination, and also in the mix are past winner Ang Lee for “Life of Pi” and past nominee David O. Russell for “Silver Linings Playbook.” The other slots went to surprise picks who are first-time nominees: Michael Haneke for his French-language “Amour” and Benh Zeitlin for “Beasts of the Southern Wild.”
“Amour” also was a best-picture surprise. The film, which won the top prize at last May’s Cannes Film Festival, mainly had been considered a favorite in the foreign-language category, where it also was nominated. “Amour” had five nominations, including original screenplay and best-actress for Emmanuelle Riva.
The year’s second-biggest box-office hit, “The Dark Knight Rises,” was shut out entirely, even for visual effects. The omission of its predecessor, “The Dark Knight,” from best-picture consideration for 2008, was largely responsible for the expansion of the Oscar category from five nominees to 10 the following year. “The Dark Knight” had earned eight nominations and won two Oscars.
Chronicling Abraham Lincoln’s final months as he engineers passage of the 13th Amendment abolishing slavery, “Lincoln” stars best-actor contender Day-Lewis in a monumental performance as the 16th president, supporting-actress nominee Field as the notoriously headstrong Mary Todd Lincoln and supporting-actor prospect Jones as abolitionist firebrand Thaddeus Stevens.

Joining Day-Lewis in the best-actor field are Bradley Cooper as a psychiatric patient trying to get his life back together in “Silver Linings Playbook”; Hugh Jackman as Victor Hugo’s tragic hero Jean Valjean in “Les Miserables”; Phoenix as a Navy vet who falls in with a cult in “The Master”; and Denzel Washington as a boozy airline pilot in “Flight.” Cooper had been a bit of a longshot. John Hawkes, a potential best-actor favorite, missed out for his role as a man in an iron lung aiming to lose his virginity in “The Sessions.”

Nominated for best actress are Jessica Chastain as a CIA operative hunting bin Laden in “Zero Dark Thirty”; Jennifer Lawrence as a troubled young widow struggling to heal in “Silver Linings Playbook”; Riva as an ailing woman tended by her husband in “Amour”; Quvenzhane Wallis as a spirited girl on the Louisiana delta in “Beasts of the Southern Wild”; and Naomi Watts as a mother caught up in a devastating tsunami in “The Impossible.”
Best actress had a wild age range: Riva is the oldest nominee ever in the category at 85, while Wallis is the youngest ever at 9.
Along with Field, supporting-actress nominees are Adams as a cult leader’s devoted wife in “The Master”; Anne Hathaway as an outcast mother reduced to prostitution in “Les Miserables”; Helen Hunt as a sex surrogate in “The Sessions”; and Jacki Weaver as an unstable man’s doting mom in “Silver Linings Playbook.”
Besides Jones, the supporting-actor contenders are Alan Arkin as a wily Hollywood producer in “Argo”; Robert De Niro as a football-obsessed patriarch in “Silver Linings Playbook”; Hoffman as a dynamic cult leader in “The Master”; and Christoph Waltz as a genteel bounty hunter in “Django Unchained.”
“Family Guy” creator Seth MacFarlane, who will host the Feb. 24 Oscars, joined Emma Stone to announce the Oscar lineup, and he scored a nomination himself, original song for “Everybody Needs a Best Friend,” the tune he co-wrote for his big-screen directing debut “Ted.”
“That’s kind of cool I got nominated,” MacFarlane deadpanned at the announcement. “I get to go to the Oscars.”
Walt Disney predictably dominated the animated-feature category with three of the five nominees: “Brave,” ‘’Frankenweenie” and “Wreck-It Ralph.” Also nominated were “ParaNorman” and “The Pirates! Band of Misfits.”
“I’m absolutely blown away,” Rich Moore, director of “Wreck-It Ralph” said by phone. “It is weird at 5:30 in the morning to hear Emma Stone say your name. It’s surreal.”
“Lincoln” is Spielberg’s best awards prospect since his critical peak in the 1990s, when he won best-picture and directing Oscars for “Schindler’s List” and a second directing Oscar for “Saving Private Ryan.” The 12 nominations for “Lincoln” matched Spielberg’s personal best on “Schindler’s List,” which won seven Oscars.
Spielberg’s latest film could vault him, Day-Lewis and Field to new heights among Hollywood’s super-elite of multiple Oscar winners.
A best-picture win for “Lincoln” would be Spielberg’s second, while another directing win would be his third, a feat achieved only by Frank Capra and William Wyler, who each earned three directing Oscars, and John Ford, who received four.
“Lincoln” also was the ninth best-picture nominee Spielberg has directed, moving him into a tie for second-place with Ford. Only Wyler directed more best-picture nominees, with 13.
Day-Lewis and Field both have two lead-acting Oscars already, he for “My Left Foot” and “There Will Be Blood” and she for “Norma Rae” and “Places in the Heart.” A third Oscar for either would put them in rare company with previous triple winners Ingrid Bergman, Walter Brennan, Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep. Katharine Hepburn is the record-holder with four acting Oscars.
An Oscar for Jones would be his second supporting-actor prize; he previously won for “The Fugitive.”
“Lincoln” composer John Williams — whose five Oscars include three for the music of three earlier Spielberg films, “Jaws,” ‘’E.T. the Extra-terrestrial” and “Schindler’s List” — earned his 43rd nomination for best score, extending his all-time record in the category.
The Oscars feature a best-picture field that ranges from five to 10 films depending on a complex formula of ballots from the 5,856 voting members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Winners for the 85th Oscars will be announced Feb. 24 at a ceremony aired live on ABC from Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre.

Week-by-week, it becomes more-and-more clear: Life of Pi (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=lifeofpi.htm) is on pace to be a major international hit. Ang Lee (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/people/chart/?id=anglee.htm)'s adaptation of the best-selling novel earned $59.3 million from 64 markets this weekend, which is its highest tally so far. To date, it has earned $301 million, and strong holds suggest it could wind up close to $500 million before the end of its run.

Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty killed the competition at the weekend box office, grossing a better-than-expected $24 million as it expanded nationwide after earning an Academy Award nomination for best picture.
The movie's No. 1 finish is a sizeable victory for Sony and Megan Ellison's Annapurna Pictures, which continue to battle criticism that Zero Dark Thirty, chronicling the CIA's decade-long hunt for Osama bin Laden, over-emphasizes the role torture played in tracking down bin Laden. Zero Dark Thirty, opening in New York and Los Angeles on Dec. 19, has earned a total of $29.5 million.
The critically acclaimed movie scored an A- CinemaScore from audiences. Males made up nearly 60 percent of those buying tickets, while two of the three top-performing theaters were in Washington, D.C., where the film has become a lightning rod.
VIDEO: 'Zero Dark Thirty' Star Jessica Chastain on Her Emotional 'Straitjacket' During Torture Scenes (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/zero-dark-thirty-jessica-chastain-410468)
Zero Dark Thirty, financed and produced by Annapurna, was penned by Mark Boal, who also teamed with Bigelow on the Oscar-winning The Hurt Locker.
Heading into the weekend, tracking had suggested that Zero Dark Thirty would end up in a close race with Warner Bros.' period mob pic Gangster Squad, but in a surprise twist Gangster Squad was beaten both by Zero Dark Thirty and horror spoof A Haunted House.
Fueled by African-American moviegoers, Haunted House outpaced expectations to gross a healthy $18.8 million for Open Road Films, IM Global and Endgame Entertainment. The movie, placing No. 2 and starring Marlon Wayans, is a parody of the Paranormal Activity franchise and other found-footage films.
Warner Bros.' Gangster Squad, placing No. 3, grossed a soft $16.7 million after receiving a B+ CinemaScore. Directed by Ruben Fleischer, Gangster Squad centers on a special task force formed by the Los Angeles Police Department during the late 1940s to fight mobsters. Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Sean Penn, Michael Pena and Emma Stone star.

Zero Dark Thirty was among a handful of films that enjoyed a boost after landing an Oscar nomination for best picture and is easily on course to become Bigelow's top-grossing film to date, besting the $45 million earned domestically by Point Break. The film earned a total of five nominations, including a best picture nod for Jessica Chaistain.
Receiving the top Academy Award nom greatly can improve a film's fortunes if the timing is right, and that's why Sony waited until now to unleash Zero Dark Thirty nationwide.
Among other best picture contenders, the Weinstein Co.'s Django Unchained and Silver Linings Playbook enjoyed a boost, particularly Silver Linings, which placed No. 10 despite only playing in 800 theaters. Silver Linings was up 38 percent from the previous weekend -- the most of any film -- grossing $5 million for a total $41.3 million. The movie ups its theater count to 2,500 locations next weekend.
Django, coming in No. 4, grossed $11.1 million for a domestic cume of $125.4 million. Universal's best-picture entry Les Miserables fell only 37 percent from the previous weekend, grossing $10.1 million for a total $119.2. Overseas, the musical took in $25.5 million for the weekend from 22 markets for an international cume of $115.1 million and worldwide total of $234.3 million.

Disney and DreamWorks' Lincoln -- considered an awards frontrunner -- fell less than 17 percent, grossing $6.3 million in its 10th weekend for a domestic total of $152.6 million.

"Life of Pi" has proven to be a modest hit in the States. But the fantastical adventure tale is truly enjoying the lucrative high "life" far from American shores.
Director Ang Lee's screen adaptation of Yann Martel's 2001 novel of the same name has certainly found something of a domestic audience, though with only a little over $91 million at the box office since its release on November 21, it's been considerably overshadowed by even more higher-profile holiday season offerings like "Les Miserables," "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (http://movies.yahoo.com/blogs/2013-oscars/life-pi-oscar-nominated-international-film-mostly-international-194922256.html;_ylt=ApUbSCcL7Gql_I_tUMEL6E7MAOB_;_ ylu=X3oDMTU3b3ZjNWw5BGNjb2RlA3ZzaGFyZWFnMnVwcmVzdA RtaXQDTmV3cyBBcnRpY2xlIE5ld3MgZm9yIFlvdSBSaWdodCBS YWlsBHBrZwMxNWIyYmFlMS1jYWY4LTMzMzgtYmE0OS1jNGJmYW Y5YzUxMTIEcG9zAzMEc2VjA25ld3NfZm9yX3lvdQR2ZXIDMzNk ZDExZjAtNWMzZS0xMWUyLWJmNTktNWVlMWIzN2ZhNDU2;_ylg= X3oDMTJuYzdiNHE2BGludGwDdXMEbGFuZwNlbi11cwRwc3RhaW QDZGNhYzQ0NzgtYWUxOS0zMDBiLWIyNzUtNTkyNjNmYzE1Njdk BHBzdGNhdANuZXdzBHB0A3N0b3J5cGFnZQ--;_ylv=3#)" and "Skyfall." Fox 2000 probably isn't worried about the $120 million production not making its money back, though, as the film has grossed more than $300 million internationally, bringing its current worldwide gross to just under $400 million.
It's an appropriate fate ("Life of Pi" is big on that concept) that international success should be achieved by a rather international production. "Life of Pi" marks a creative collaboration among representatives from many different countries, both in front of and behind the camera. Suraj Sharma and Irrfan Khan, who play the lead character of Pi at different ages, are Indian actors. Gerard Depardieu, who has a (rather inexplicable) cameo as a cranky cook, is French, and Rafe Spall, who plays The Writer, is British. Cinematographer Claudio Miranda is from Chile and composer Mychael Danna is Canadian.
And screenwriter David Magee was born in Flint, Michigan. Go Blue!
The production went through a few international directors before Taiwanese-born Ang Lee signed on. Indian-American director M. Night Shyamalan was first approached to direct, though he ultimately turned it down due to the novel's ending possibly clashing with his own reputation for final-act twists. The project was offered to Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron, who turned it down for "Children of Men (http://movies.yahoo.com/blogs/2013-oscars/life-pi-oscar-nominated-international-film-mostly-international-194922256.html;_ylt=ApUbSCcL7Gql_I_tUMEL6E7MAOB_;_ ylu=X3oDMTU3b3ZjNWw5BGNjb2RlA3ZzaGFyZWFnMnVwcmVzdA RtaXQDTmV3cyBBcnRpY2xlIE5ld3MgZm9yIFlvdSBSaWdodCBS YWlsBHBrZwMxNWIyYmFlMS1jYWY4LTMzMzgtYmE0OS1jNGJmYW Y5YzUxMTIEcG9zAzMEc2VjA25ld3NfZm9yX3lvdQR2ZXIDMzNk ZDExZjAtNWMzZS0xMWUyLWJmNTktNWVlMWIzN2ZhNDU2;_ylg= X3oDMTJuYzdiNHE2BGludGwDdXMEbGFuZwNlbi11cwRwc3RhaW QDZGNhYzQ0NzgtYWUxOS0zMDBiLWIyNzUtNTkyNjNmYzE1Njdk BHBzdGNhdANuZXdzBHB0A3N0b3J5cGFnZQ--;_ylv=3#)." French director Jean-Pierre Jeunet was also briefly attached.
Principal photography involved some rather formidable globe-hopping as well. Filming began in Pondicherry, India and other parts of the country before heading to Taiwan, where the crew shot for five and a half months in Taipei Zoo and Kenting National Park, located in Pingtung County where Lee was born. While in Taiwan, the ocean scenes were shot at a giant tank built in an abandoned airport (which came to be known as the world’s largest self-generating wave tank with a capacity of 1.7 million gallons). After photography was completed in Taiwan, the production moved back to India and wrapped in Montreal, Canada.
The complex visual effects for the film also brought together quite the international team. The lead effects company for the production was Rhythm & Hues Studios, based in El Segundo, California, though the 3D effects were created by artists from all of the R&H divisions, including locations in Mumbai and Hyderabad (India), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Vancouver (Canada) and Kaohsiung (Taiwan).
"Life of Pi" has been nominated for 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography and Best Visual Effects. It's an honor that is indeed being felt all over the world.

Watched life of pi. Over expectations avam it wasn't great. Just good. Sfx was mindblowing. But lagging narrative aanu. Unwanted diversions like explaining Gisele uncle and piscine molitor etc stood out whereas scenes like the alternative climax if pictured would've had a better impact. alternative climax picturise cheyyan pattilla. that would be gross and giving the film a straight R.
the film deals with the subject of religion as faith, what we believe in.
the audience can choose their own climax, either the film version or the what Pi narrated at the end.
its a very tough concept to be made into a film. i think Ang Lee did a great job.

ZDT is an excellent film. i liked it better than Hurt Locker (by Bigelow itself..). the film stands true to whatever is known about the biggest man hunt in history.
Jessica gave a riveting performance. the raid was well shot, and the bomb blasts n explosions were too realistic. you could feel the agony in Maya when she goes through all those detainees to find that one courier which could lead her to Bin Laden.
its a must see film if you're an ardent fan of films based on real events.

Next to watch on the list - Argo.

MPAA Gave The ‘Evil Dead’ Remake A NC-17; Will Be Re-Cut For R Rating (http://www.slashfilm.com/mpaa-gave-the-evil-dead-remake-a-nc-17-will-be-re-cut-for-r-rating/)

Posted on Monday, January 28th, 2013 by Germain Lussier (http://www.slashfilm.com/author/germain-lussier/)
http://bitcast-a-sm.bitgravity.com/slashfilm/wp/wp-content/images/Evil-Dead1-550x289.jpg
Vomiting blood, severed limbs, slicing tongues, everything we’ve seen from Fede Alvarez‘s remake of Evil Dead has been gory enough to make some people queasy. After watching the red band trailer (http://www.slashfilm.com/evil-dead-red-band-trailer-sam-raimis-classic-gets-remade-with-gore-to-spare/), many questioned how a film with that apparent level of intense violence could get an R-rating. Turns out, they were right to ask. Alvarez took to Twitter to reveal he has submitted his first cut of the film to the MPAA, and that it got an NC-17 rating.
That rating forced him to go in and recut down to an R before the film’s April 12th release.
Here’s the tweet from Alvarez.
Don’t necessarily think this means the film will be any less disgusting than the trailers make it look, though. It’s a fairly common practice for filmmakers to submit a version of the film that’s way over the top, knowing it’ll get the NC-17, so as to desensitize the MPAA to the R-rated version they really want. There’s no confirmation that Alvarez and his team, including original star/director Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi, did this. But you’d have to think they expected the first rating, especially with Alvarez saying he’s “proud.”

Rumor: Is Warner Bros. Scrapping Will Beall’s ‘Justice League’ Script? (http://www.slashfilm.com/rumor-is-warner-bros-scrapping-will-bealls-justice-league-script/)

Posted on Thursday, February 7th, 2013 by Angie Han (http://www.slashfilm.com/author/angie-han/)
http://bitcast-a-sm.bitgravity.com/slashfilm/wp/wp-content/images/Justice-League-by-Alex-Ross-header-size-550x299.jpg (http://bitcast-a-sm.bitgravity.com/slashfilm/wp/wp-content/images/Justice-League-by-Alex-Ross-header-size.jpg)
On paper, a Justice League movie sounds like a fantastic idea. The Marvel Cinematic universe proved that a cohesive superhero universe could earn high critical praise and staggering box office grosses, and the core members of the Justice League are arguably even more famous and beloved than those who make up the Avengers. Done well, it’s a project that could conceivably blow The Avengers or The Dark Knight Rises out of the water.
In practice, however, it may be a different story. Though a few details have leaked out here and there, Will Beall‘s script is cloaked in mystery for the moment. Now some worrying reports indicate we may never get to see it come to life at all. According to anonymous insiders, WB has soured on Beall’s take and could be bringing in new writers to start fresh. Hit the jump to read more.

Badass Digest (http://badassdigest.com/2013/02/07/justice-league-may-be-looking-for-new-writers) got the scoop from numerous sources with knowledge of the project. The consensus among them is that Beall’s script was terrible to begin with, and that it hasn’t been helped by excessive studio meddling. The apparent awfulness of the screenplay is apparently why Justice League has had so much trouble attracting a director, despite the high-profile nature of the project.
Some of their more pessimistic spies speculate that Justice League is in such bad shape it could fall apart entirely, while others predict Warner Bros. will keep pushing with a crappy project in an attempt to keep up with Marvel. If it chooses the latter, Warner Bros. may opt to throw out Beall’s work and start fresh with new writers. Of course, all of this is assuming that Man of Steel performs well this summer. If not, Justice League will be dead in the water anyway.
There are still two years to go until the film’s targeted 2015 release, so it’s possible Warner Bros. could turn things around by then. But as of right now, it’s not looking so good. The latest rumors (http://www.slashfilm.com/justice-league-will-be-composed-of-five-core-characters/) indicated that Beall’s film was to consist of a five-person team (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and The Flash) going up against one of the DC Universe’s biggest, baddest big bads of all, Darkseid. There’s no word yet on whether that’s still the plan.

2013 Bafta winners - the full list

All the award winners - the ultimate list

Feb 10th 2013 By Total Film

http://cdn.mos.totalfilm.com/images/2/2013-bafta-nominations-announced-125161-470-75.jpg
The 2013 EE British Academy Film Awards (AKA the Baftas) were handed out on Sunday 10 February 2013, and there were some massive wins for Django Unchained, Skyfall, Les Miserables and more!
While Steven Spielberg’s stately presidential biopic Lincoln (http://www.totalfilm.com/lincoln) had the most nominations this year (with 10 in total), it only walked away with one - although it was a biggie, with Daniel Day-Lewis winning Lead Actor.
Elsewhere, it was a refreshingly even spread for critical and commercial successes like Les Misérables (http://www.totalfilm.com/les-miserables-2012) (four gongs), Life Of Pi (http://www.totalfilm.com/life-of-pi) (two gongs), and
The only surprises came with Skyfall (http://www.totalfilm.com/Skyfall) nabbing the Outstanding British Film, Ben Affleck nabbing Best Film and Best Director for Argo (http://www.totalfilm.com/reviews/cinema/argo), and Emmanuelle Riva winning Lead Actress for Amour (http://www.totalfilm.com/reviews/cinema/amour).
