The Hobbit - Desolation of Smaug kandu.. snow day aayondu prathyekichu pani onnum illarnu, so nere vittu. regular 2D aanu kandathu. with the 3D version, IMAX 3D verson and HFR version running, and snow day I thought the crowd will be less. but then a 70% attendance.

Coming to the film, I'm just sad!!.. it's one more film and it all ends. unless Jackson himself writes a new story.. :P
the story, setting and the characters never ceases to amaze me. Harry Potters, Hunger Games and Twilights can stay away - the story of Middle Earth is legendary stuff. Even better than the first installment, and with the tough part of being the middle chapter, Desolation scores really well in all departments. the abrupt ending is what you call brilliant film making, creating the excitement to watch the final part.

Action sequences are top notch as is with the "Rings/Hobbit" series. the river seqeunce with the Elves/Dwarves vs Orcs deserve a special mention. And more answers here, on how Lord Sauron built his empire, his state as we see in LOTR. and what else, Legolas is back in action and this time along with a Lady Legolas as well.
cinematography is stunning and the music is awesome. and at 2.45 hrs, i wasn't bored a single minute. and can't wait for the Extended Edition to come out later next year. this is another 1billion in the long run.

The title of Avengers: Age of Ultron makes it clear just which Marvel heavy will cause Nick Fury to send an "Assemble!" group text to Earth's Mightiest Heroes.
It seems that the mechanical man won't be alone, however, as the identity of a supplemental villain – one with a connection to some Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch – in the Avengers sequel has been revealed.

Marvel Studios has kept a tight lid on the second installment of its premiere franchise, but as Joss Whedon gears up to actually start shooting the sequel early in 2014, the lid is slowly but surely loosening up. We recently learned that Don Cheadle's James "Rhodey" Rhodes has a significant part to play in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

And now we know about this second bad guy, Baron Von Strucker, is also going to stick it to our heroes.

Having equipped himself to be functionally immortal, this bald bad guy is the shot-caller at HYDRA, the glass-jawed Nazi offshoot that Cap gave a patriotic uppercut in Captain America: The First Avenger.
Latino Review (http://latino-review.com/2013/12/exclusive-avengers-2-age-ultron-another-bad-guy/) revealed Von Strucker's involvement, reporting that Marvel is eyeballing at actors like Dougray Scott and Marton Csokas to potentially play the role. Scottish actor Scott was Bryan Singer's initial choice to play Wolverine in X-Men, but scheduling problems with Mission: Impossible II kept that from happening. Csokas, meanwhile, appears in next year's comic book sequels The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For.
Neither actor has been offered the part by any means, but they give an indicator of what Whedon and company are looking for in an actor to play the monocle-wearing ex-Nazi.
Baron Von Strucker, it seems, is the employer of the superpowered Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen. Hitfix (http://www.hitfix.com/motion-captured/baron-von-strucker-will-battle-the-avengers-in-joss-whedons-age-of-ultron) confirms as much and elaborates on just what to expect. According to Drew McWeeny, "If you look at this like a James Bond movie, Von Strucker's the bad guy they'll take care of in the pre-credits sequence before they move into the main story. Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch have a complicated journey in this film, and the question of whether they're good or bad is one of the big things driving the movie overall."
Whoever ends up playing the bad guy, he'll be joining James Spader as Ultron, along with returning Avengers players Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders.

Avengers: Age of Ultron is scheduled to hit theaters on May 1, 2015.

GLOBAL: The Top 10 Films Of 2013
on December 30, 2013

1. Iron Man 3

Disney
Global: $1.214B
Overseas: $805.7M
North America: $409M
Overseas 66% / North America 34%
The biggest blockbuster of the year was the only film of 2013 to cross the $1 billion mark. The third installment in the Iron Man franchise posted a considerable improvement above its predecessors, Iron Man ($585M Worldwide) and Iron Man 2 ($622M Worldwide). The box office bump follows the massive success of Marvel's The Avengers, the 2012 juggernaut that collected $1.514B from the global box office. Iron Man 3 soared above the competition with a $121.2 million tally from China, its most important overseas market. There seems to be no stopping Robert Downey Jr. & Co. with these superhero movies, especially considering that the $409.1 million the film collected from North America only represents a third of its global total.
TOP 5 OVERSEAS TERRITORIES
China $121.2M
South Korea $64M
United Kingdom $57M
Mexico $48.5M
Brazil $48.3M
2. Despicable Me 2

Universal
Global: $920.7M
Overseas: $553M
North America: $367.7M
Overseas 60% / North America 40%
The Minions took over the world in 2013. The animated sequel became the most profitable film of all time for Universal and its second-highest release in history behind Jurassic Park’s $960 million. The film nearly doubled the $543 million global total of the original and is set to surpass Shrek 2 to become the fourth biggest animated film of all time. Universal might have expected a hit ahead of the film’s release, but no one imagined that the fledgling franchise would easily defeat competing films with built-in pre-awareness or loftier box office credentials. Despicable Me 2 will have a shot at the $1 billion mark with a January release in China.
TOP 5 OVERSEAS TERRITORIES
United Kingdom $72.2M
Mexico $47.7M
Germany $38.2M
France $36.9M
Brazil $35.6M
3. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

Lionsgate
Global: $795.1M
Overseas: $404M
North America: $391.1M
Overseas 51% / North America 49%
The best selling young adult novels enjoyed a blockbuster transition to the big screen in last year’s The Hunger Games. The first film of the newly minted franchise grossed $686.5 million worldwide, a figure the sequel easily surpassed.
TOP 5 OVERSEAS TERRITORIES
United Kingdom $52.3M
Germany $39.8M
Australia $33.1M
China $28.1M
France $25M
4. Fast & Furious 6

Universal
Global: $788M
Overseas: $549.3M
North America: $238.6M
Overseas 69% / North America 31%
Fast 6 sped out of the gate by becoming Universal’s biggest U.S., overseas, and global opener of all time. The film hardly slowed down from its hot start and went on to hit a franchise record of $788 million worldwide.
TOP 5 OVERSEAS TERRITORIES
China $65.6M
United Kingdom $38.3M
Mexico $36M
Russia $33.9M
Germany $29.9M
5. Monsters University

Disney
Global: $738.8M
Overseas: $470.4M
North America: $268.4M
Overseas 63% / North America 37%
It took Disney Pixar over a decade to follow-up the success of Monsters, Inc. Audiences didn’t forget about Mike and Sulley in the twelve years between Monsters, Inc. and Monsters University as the Pixar prequel became Disney’s second biggest hit of the year behind Iron Man 3. Monsters University wasn’t a runaway hit in China, but an unexpected $89.2 million run in Japan helped launch the film to big numbers overseas. Argentina, not known as a traditionally powerful territory, contributed a strong $23.6 million to the film’s box office total.

Superman’s return to the big screen was a significant improvement over the franchise’s previous iteration, Superman Returns, which only grossed $391 million worldwide. The key factor to the improvement became a new focus on the overseas market, where Man of Steel nearly doubled the overseas cume of its predecessor. China led the charge outside of North America with a $63.4 million contribution to the Caped Crusader’s latest cinematic effort. Man of Steel’s box-office results were optimistic enough to revalue the DC brand outside of Batman for Warner Brothers. The studio is currently developing a new film featuring Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman.

One of the year’s most pleasant box office surprises came with this critically lauded sci-fi epic from Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón. Marvel’s The Avengers helped push Iron Man 3 beyond the $1 billion mark, and the influence of 2012’s top grosser can also be seen in the box office bump for Thor: The Dark World. The original Thor grossed $446 million worldwide, a figure that Thor: The Dark World surpassed in a matter of weeks. Overseas audiences became the catalyst of this box office surge after the Thor sequel surpassed the lifetime cume of most major markets within the first three weeks of release.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug became the top grossing film of the year in Germany over the final weekend of 2013. Germany was the top overseas market for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey with $88.8 million en route to grossing $1.017 billion worldwide. The second entry in the Hobbit trilogy is keeping pace with its predecessor as Warner Brothers looks for another billion dollar hit from the Tolkien universe.

The Prehistoric animated feature might have gotten away with some Ice Age nostalgia from overseas viewers, but The Croods was able to stand on its own and deliver a $589.8 million global cume -the highest of the year for a non-franchise animated feature. The Croods crossed the $400 million mark overseas in its first outing, will a sequel produce the same blockbuster results of Despicable Me 2?

Quentin Tarantino’s THE HATEFUL EIGHT

Quentin Tarantino has just announced his next film will indeed be a western, will likely star Bruce Dern and two-time Oscar winner, Christoph Waltz and will be called, The Hateful Eight. Sounds like production starts this summer.

Although we don’t have the storyline or character specs, it’s probable he’s drawing from 60′s western, The Magnificent Seven and Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai.

Batman vs Superman delayed until 2016

Man of Steel 2 now up against Marvel's Phase 3

Jan 18th 2014 By Matt Risley

http://cdn.mos.totalfilm.com/images/m/man-of-steel-2-batman-vs-superman-10910-p-1383745853-470-75.jpg
Arguably the biggest superhero blockbuster on Hollywood's schedule has hit production problems.
Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that DC's mega-movie Batman vs Superman (http://www.totalfilm.com/man-of-steel-2-batman-vs-superman) (AKA Man of Steel 2) has been delayed until 6 May 2016.
The delay of nearly ten months has been attributed to let the studio "allow the filmmakers time to realise fully their vision, given the complex visual nature of the story."
While fans will debate the pros and cons of delaying DC's biggest superhero property, it certainly gives credence to the rumours that Warner Bros. are planning to film Batman vs Superman and Justice League of America back-to-back.
Not only that, but it's a stated and inflammatory move of intention by DC - the new release date is the same as an as-yet-unnamed Marvel Phase 3 movie. The box office gloves are definitely off.
As for the summer 2015 release date previously assigned to the blockbuster, Warner Bros. have now shifted Joe Wright's as-yet-untitled Peter Pan movie into its place.

BATMAN VS SUPER-MAN STORYLINE [COULD BE FAKE]

The villians are Lex Luthor and Metallo
Batman forms a UN type deal to stop Superman from destroying another city
Aquaman is in it, but not called Aquaman. He’s there because the world engine in the ocean did something to the fish
Wonder woman poses as a Wayne Enterprises investor to retrieve an item that belongs to her people.
Lex Luthor is in the shadows a lot, a manipulator. Not much face time with Superman.
Robin betrayed Batman at some point, leading to a falling out between them
The Batcave was super cool looking, and the mobile looked similar to Burton’s
Lois is investigating Lex.
Metallo “kills” Clark
The Daily Planet is bought by Lex Luthor for PR purposes
At the end Superman is living in exile, and the Justice League is a government approved superhero team.

Domestic Market Review: 'Ride Along', 'Lone Survivor', & 'Frozen' Drive Best January In Four Years
on January 28, 2014

By Shawn Robbins

2014's box office has kicked off in a very positive way for the industry as January is on pace to top $900 million for the first time in four years. Based on historical trends, the month's projected total by the end of this week should land close to $910 million.

That figure marks a 10 percent improvement over January 2013's $827 million, 9.6 percent over 2012's $831 million, and 21 percent over 2011's $755 million. The month's non-inflation-adjusted revenue will represent the third best ever for January.

In fact, even when adjusting for inflation, this month has seen higher attendance levels since Avatar was dominating the market four years ago. The estimated number of tickets sold this month is up a projected 8 percent from last year, based on NATO's most recent report that the average ticket price in the final quarter of 2013 reached a record $8.35.

Contributing to this month's success have been two of the three best January openings in history. The popularity of Kevin Hart and veteran Ice Cube helped Universal's Ride Along ($41.5 million) top Cloverfield ($40.1 million) for the three-day January weekend record, as well as the four-day Martin Luther King weekend record ($48.6 million versus $46.2 million, respectively). Not to be forgotten is Lone Survivor, also from Universal, which bagged $37.9 million in its wide expansion earlier in the month. Lone's debut was good enough for the third best ever January opening after Ride Along's record is taken into consideration.

This was the first time since 2009 that more than one film joined the list of top ten January openings. To date, Ride Along has amassed $76.9 million, while Lone Survivor stands at $94.8 million through Monday, January 27.

http://s3.amazonaws.com/bo-assets/production/tiny_mce_photos/24766/original/jan10year.png

Outside of Universal's headliners, January releases fared modestly as a whole. The Nut Job has performed surprisingly well with $40.7 million through Monday. Behind it are franchise under-performers Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit ($31.3 million) and Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones ($32.1 million). The Legend of Hercules ($17.1 million), Devil's Due ($13.1 million), and I, Frankenstein ($9.2 million) represent the month's poorest new releases. These totals are current and exclude projections for the remainder of the month.

Carrying some of the usual post-holiday weight have been various Oscar-nominated films and holdover blockbusters. Disney's Frozen stands out from the bunch with an incredible $85.5 million (projected) over the January 1-27 period, and it's on pace to overtake Despicable Me 2 ($368 million) in February as 2013's highest grossing animated release. Meanwhile, American Hustle and The Wolf of Wall Street have continued to ride their star power and awards buzz. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug rounds out the list of films which will have earned over $50 million this month.

Looking ahead to February, the box office should continue to ring up solid business through the likes of The LEGO Movie, George Clooney's ensemble-driven The Monuments Men, and Liam Neeson's latest action flick, Non-Stop (although its Feb. 28 release means March will carry the most benefit from its release). Kevin Hart's hot streak could also carry over into Valentine's weekend with the About Last Night remake. Underdogs, wild cards, and expected low-level performers of the month include Vampire Academy, the Robocop reboot/remake, Endless Love, Winter's Tale, 3 Days to Kill, Pompeii, Son of God, and Welcome to Yesterday. So long as one or two of those films perform reasonably well, in addition to the aforementioned four coming close to expectations, topping Feburary 2013's 11-year low $616 million market performance shouldn't be difficult.

Philip Seymour Hoffman, perhaps the most ambitious and widely admired American actor of his generation, who gave three-dimensional nuance to a wide range of sidekicks, villains and leading men on screen and embraced some of the theater’s most burdensome roles on Broadway, died Sunday at an apartment in Greenwich Village. He was 46.
The death, apparently from a drug overdose, was confirmed by the police. Mr. Hoffman was found in the apartment by a friend, David Bar Katz, who became concerned after being unable to reach him.
Investigators found a syringe in his left forearm, at least two plastic envelopes with what appeared to be heroin near where his body was found in a bathroom, and five empty plastic envelopes in a trash bin, a law-enforcement official said.

ArtsBeat: Philip Seymour Hoffman Is Remembered by Fellow Actors on TwitterFEB. 2, 2014

Mr. Hoffman was long known to struggle with addiction. In 2006, he said (http://www.cbsnews.com/videos/philip-seymour-hoffman/) in an interview with “60 Minutes” that he had given up drugs and alcohol many years earlier, when he was 22. But last year, he checked into a rehabilitation program for about 10 days after a reliance on prescription pills resulted in his briefly turning again to heroin.
“I saw him last week, and he was clean and sober, his old self,” said Mr. Katz, a playwright, who said he called 911 after finding Mr. Hoffman. “I really thought this chapter was over.”
On Sunday afternoon, Mr. Hoffman’s family released a statement saying: “We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Phil and appreciate the outpouring of love and support we have received from everyone. This is a tragic and sudden loss and we ask that you respect our privacy during this time of grieving. Please keep Phil in your thoughts and prayers.”
As news of Mr. Hoffman’s death spread, fellow actors as well as fans took to Twitter (http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2014/02/02/philip-seymour-hoffman-is-remembered-by-fellow-actors-on-twitter/) to express their admiration for his acting and grief over his death. Ellen DeGeneres, who will host the Oscars ceremony in March over which Mr. Hoffman’s death is likely to cast a pall, posted: “Philip Seymour Hoffman was a brilliant, talented man. The news this morning is shocking and sad. My heart goes out to his loved ones.”
Mr. Hoffman won an Academy Award in 2006 for best actor for his role in the film “Capote,” in which he portrayed the author Truman Capote as Mr. Capote researched the book “In Cold Blood.”
Known for his scene-stealing supporting roles, Mr. Hoffman was nominated for the Academy Award for best supporting actor three times: for the 2012 film “The Master,” the 2008 film “Doubt,” and the 2007 film “Charlie Wilson’s War.” He also recently had a role in the hugely popular “The Hunger Games” films.
Mr. Hoffman had been acting in films for the last two decades, often transforming physically for each new role. He was prolific as well, sometimes filming several movies in a year and appearing in plays on Broadway.
In 2012, he played (http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/11/theater/philip-seymour-hoffman-stars-in-death-of-a-salesman.html) Willy Loman in Arthur Miller’s “Death of a Salesman” on Broadway, a performance that earned him his third Tony Award nomination. He was also nominated for “True West” in 2000 and “Long Day’s Journey Into Night” in 2003.
“I try to live my life in such a way that I don’t have profound regrets,” Mr. Hoffman told (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/21/magazine/21hoffman-t.html?pagewanted=all) The New York Times in 2008. “That’s probably why I work so much. I don’t want to feel I missed something important.”
Mr. Hoffman had three young children, a son and two daughters, with his partner, Mimi O’Donnell, a costume designer and the artistic director of the Labyrinth Theater Company in New York. The family lived in an apartment on Jane Street, neighbors said, not far from the building on Bethune Street, where his body was found.
In his acceptance speech (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-VcWRJHBUDM) at the Academy Awards in 2006, Mr. Hoffman thanked many people, but in particular his mother, Marilyn O’Connor, who attended. He thanked her for raising him and his three siblings on her own and for taking him to see his first play.

“Be proud, Mom, ‘cause I’m proud of you, and we’re here tonight, and it’s so good,” he said with a smile.
On Sunday afternoon outside the Bethune Street building, more than 100 people had gathered to mourn the actor’s death.
“He’s a local. He’s a fixture in this neighborhood,” said Christian McCulloch, 39, who said that he lives nearby. “You see him with his kids in the coffee shops. He is so sweet. It’s desperately sad.”
Down the street at the Labyrinth Theater Company, where Mr. Hoffman was a member since 1995, friends gathered on Sunday to remember him. David Deblinger, an actor and a member of the company, said Mr. Hoffman often came to the theater with his children in tow.
“He helped produce theater, and acted, and sold tickets and helped clean up,” Mr. Deblinger, 48, said. “We are here to remember him. This is a time to sit Shiva,” he said, referring to the Jewish mourning ritual.
Mr. Hoffman had recently been cast in a new television show on Showtime called “Happyish.” The network released a statement on Sunday calling him “one of our generation’s finest and most brilliant actors.”
“He was also a gifted comedic talent,” the statement said. “It was a great privilege and pleasure to work with him and we are all absolutely devastated by this sudden loss. Our thoughts go out to his family at this very difficult time.”
The last time Mr. Katz spoke to Mr. Hoffman was around 9 p.m. on Saturday, the law-enforcement official said. When the actor did not show up at 9 a.m. on Sunday for an expected visit with Ms. O’Donnell and their children, she called Mr. Katz, who went to the fourth-floor apartment on Bethune Street and found it double-locked, the official said. Mr. Katz phoned an assistant to Mr. Hoffman who had a set of keys, and they entered the apartment together around 11:30 a.m.
The plastic envelopes near Mr. Hoffman’s body that were believed to be heroin were stamped with two drug brands: one had purple letters spelling the words Ace of Spades and the other had a red icon of the ace of hearts, according to the law-enforcement official.
Narcotics detectives from the New York Police Department were investigating whether the brands had any significance or had surfaced in any other overdose cases. Investigators also planned to test the substances inside to determine if they had been tainted in anyway, though there was no initial indication that they had been.
The city medical examiner will conduct tests to determine a cause of death, and on Sunday, crime scene investigators combed through the area. About 6:40 p.m., Mr. Hoffman’s body was taken from the apartment, surrounded by police officers.

Christian Bale: screen legend?

Feature Robert Zak 24 Jan 2014 - 06:16 Share on printShare on emailShare on stumbleuponShare on twitter

As Christian Bale puts in a startling performance in American Hustle, Robert looks at how the actor's grown into a great character actor...

Christian Bale's performance in American Hustle sets him up for a future in which he can become screen legend, but for a while it seemed like we may never see the scope of his unique gifts as a character actor.

From the moment he fire-axed his way onto the Hollywood A-list with American Psycho in 2000, Christian Bale became a cult film icon. His character, murderous banking executive Patrick Bateman went on to become one of the most quotable film characters ever, as evidenced by the sheer amount of internet memes and YouTube clips dedicated to him. Bale set the bar high for himself with a performance that hit the extremes of darkness and hilarity, if not exactly emotional complexity. We had good reason to be excited about the Welshman's future.

But for this writer at least, Bale failed to recapture the raw, unhinged energy of this role for the next decade. While featuring in a panoply of successful films between 2000 and 2010, Bale's acting ambit was channelled into taut, brooding roles that failed to showcase his versatility (similar to what Ryan Gosling is going through right now). Certainly, starring as the Dark Knight in one of the most successful film franchises of all time further engraved Bale into filmic folklore (not as much as his nemeses, mind), but throughout this whole period something of what made Bale so damn captivating in American Psycho appeared to buried; not quite dead, but certainly in a state of dormancy.

Defined though he was by it, there was more to Bale than Batman in the 2000s. He gave powerful-yet-restrained performances in The Machinist and Rescue Dawn, where he successfully evoked two disparate images of man pushed to the extreme limits of human resilience. Further accomplished films included 3:10 To Yuma, I'm Not There and Christopher Nolan's The Prestige, but all of these encapsulated my frustration in Bale. The unique, colourful acting abilities he previously showed were not being exploited. In all these films he shone as part of an ensemble, but in none of them did I inextricably connect the actor to his character.

Where was the madness, the explosiveness, and the charm? While proving himself to be a stalwart performer, it's telling that what's most memorable about Bale from these films are the harrowing images of his emaciated figure in The Machinist; a powerful portrait of the extremes actors (like Bale, at least) go to for their craft, but hardly a testament to the man's talents.

With all this in mind, we should perhaps have shown a bit of sympathy for poor Christian when he had that infamous tirade on the set of Terminator Salvation in 2008. After nine years of being typecast as a dark, mysterious character with much more going on on the inside than meets the viewer's eye, he exploded like a dormant Welsh volcano presumed to be extinct. For the first time in nine years, Bale showed that he still had that crazed energy that brought him to fame, but with few opportunities to show it in front of the camera, what was Bale to do but take it out on a mediocre film's director of photography? (Though to be fair, Bale's behaviour was extremely unpleasant.)

But maybe the Terminator freakout served as an inadvertent audition tape, showcasing Bale as an actor filled with misguided vivacity and fire that was literally screaming to be put in front of the camera. His calls were answered, as Bale was roused from his brooding stupor in the 2010 Micky Ward biopic, The Fighter, playing Ward's crack-addled brother and trainer Dicky Eklund.

Even though Bale once again drained himself for the role, turning himself into a convincing crack-skeleton, this time it wasn't just his physical image that burned itself into the imagination, but the tragedy, the madness, and the warmth of his character - a word that felt awkward to pin to Bale's performances of the previous decade. Shaky, wild-eyed, and twitchily shadow-boxing in elegiac recollection of his character's pro-boxing days, Bale kept us guessing whether Dicky was high on crack, or on life and love for his family. Despite his superficial grubbiness, Bale infused the character with charm and dignity, bagging himself a well-deserved Oscar.

With the help of director David O Russell, Bale finally outdid himself, fusing the fervour of the performance that brought him to fame ten years earlier with elements of the cerebral, tortured characters he'd spent the 2000s mastering.

Now, a mere three years after Bale asserted himself as one of the greatest actors of his generation, he has passed another milestone as pot-bellied scam artist Irving Rosenfeld in American Hustle. While we want to avoid defining Bale by a body that expands and contracts more regularly than his own lungs, the physicality he brings to this role shows all the qualities that could yet turn him into an all-time screen legend.

As Irving, Bale shows an unprecedented level of versatility; who would've thought that Batman would two years later be a sickly, overweight man with a combover who we want to prop up lest he has a heart flutter? Not that the character is weak. Far from it, Irving is a man who has an understanding of the world more acute than any of his peers; a kind of world-weary wisdom that is only kept in check by his love for jazz music and his girlfriend. From the professorial adjustments of his glasses as he divulges some wisdom, to his absolute physical ineptitude when his comb-over gets mockingly ruffled by Bradley Cooper, Bale embodies this aged character superbly.

These are crucial qualities to showcase as Bale moves towards acting veteranship. Turning 41 this month, Bale isn't going to be playing hoary wizards, eccentric grandpas, and hospice residents just yet, but his ability to capture the nuances of a character who explicitly relies on wits and wisdom to make up for an ungraceful, unreliable body suggests that he'll be ready to make the transition towards distinguished, venerable roles when the time comes.

Bale has been freed from his Bat-manacles, and from the reputation as that guy who goes to physical extremes for his roles (though he's sure to populate 'actors who lost/gained most weight for films' lists for a long time to come). While his dormant talent as a character actor was unleashed on us with The Fighter, American Hustle builds on it, and shows that he'll have plenty to offer us in the near and distant future. Christian Bale can become more than a fondly-regarded acting veteran. In the years ahead of him – which I'm sure will be his best – he has the potential to become an all-time screen legend.

To help him along the way, let's give the man another Oscar.
