2012 - A Superhit in Kerala

by Moviebuzz

Roland Emmerich “end of the world disaster epic” 2012, which had a day and date release in Kerala with the rest of the world, has taken a super opening.

As per trade reports, 2012 has taken an incredible 90 to 95 percent opening in 25 screens in Kerala.

The film which has opened like a Malayalam superstar film may eventually turn out to be one of the all time big Hollywood hits in the state.

Critics may have panned the film for its massy disaster scenes and its length -2 hours 38 minutes. But in Kerala, the effects laden film is a treat for the audiences who love such films which cash in on their “end of the world fear psychosis”

Says a theatre manager: “ 2012 has opened better in Kerala than recent Malayalam films. It’s a super hit that has potential to do over Rs 2 crore business in the state and revived the market for Hollywood films.”

Johnny Depp is Hollywood's highest paid actor

London: Actor Johnny Depp has inked a deal of more than $35 million for the fourth installment of Pirates Of The Caribbean movie.

The actor will become Hollywood's current highest-paid actor when he returns as Captain Jack Sparrow, reported thesun.co.uk. This places him ahead of the likes of Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks and Mel Gibson, who charge about $30 million per movie.

Makers at Disney have agreed to pay so much to the 46-year-old because regular co-stars Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom are not returning this time.

Geoffrey Rush will again play Captain Barbossa and actress Penelope Cruz is expected to be the female lead.

"The movie will feature flashbacks to Jack's early life," said a source.

Most average movies go to the TOP 250 in the first because of the lesser number of higher rating . Pinne, slowly pazhakumbol , the rating comes down.

But in this case i think 500 days of summer must be a good movie.

Why ''Ninja Assassin'' and its lead actor, Rain, could just be the perfect movie model for tough times

LOS ANGELES -- Chances are you've never heard of Jeong Ji-hoon, better known as Rain. But the 27-year-old South Korean pop star is one of the most famous people in Asia. His 2005 album, It's Raining, sold more than 1 million copies. In 2006 he topped a Time Magazine online poll of the most influential people in the world (beating out an angry Stephen Colbert.)

Now he has his first starring role in an American movie: Ninja Assassins. The Warner Bros film, which hits theaters Nov. 25, tells the story of a ninja who seeks revenge against his teacher and fellow ninjas after they kill the girl he loves.

Studios would do well to pay attention. The film could serve as a roadmap for the kind of mid-budget movies they'll need to be making in the coming years. Expensive movie stars no longer guarantee a film will be a hit. Just look at recent box office stinkers like Land of the Lost (staring Will Ferrell) and The Box (staring Cameron Diaz). DVD sales, which once protected studios against losses on mediocre films, continue to slide. And ticket sales are no longer just about how a film performs in the U.S. (See: "Hollywood's Most Overpaid Stars.")

Ninja Assassin is a global movie by design. Its violence has an almost universal appeal among young men, so the film, which cost a modest $30 million to produce, should perform well in the U.S. It is being strategically released against the female-leaning vampire flick New Moon.

Then there's the overseas market. Rain's millions of fans in Asia will no doubt shell out good money to see him fight on the big screen. Most of the movie takes place in Berlin (which offered the filmmakers excellent tax credits) and the other stars are British which gives the movie European appeal.

"It's critical for the studios to have a mixed cast and use foreign locations," says Ashok Amritraj of Hyde Park Entertainment, an independent production company that specializes in films with cross-border appeal. "The box office revenue overseas has suddenly eclipsed the domestic box office."

Rain came to the attention of producer Joel Silver when he was filming Speed Racer. The film turned out to be a disaster for Warner Bros but Silver and his directors, the Wachowski Brothers, saw potential in Rain, who had a small role in the film.

"We wanted to find a way to create a star like Bruce Lee or even Steven Segal," says Silver. "Rain is charismatic and because of his dance training he can fight as well as anyone. He fulfilled all our hopes and dreams."

Silver, who has a 15-picture guaranteed deal with Warner Bros through his genre production company, Dark Castle, quickly decided to create a martial arts film as a vehicle for Rain. He brought on director James McTeigue who directed V for Vendetta and had done second unit work on Speed Racer.

Rain has few lines in the movie. He's a mysterious character who mostly lets his weapons do the talking. That should also help the film overseas. And he worked cheap. He might be huge in Asia, but in the U.S. he's not even big enough to be featured in promotional material for the film. The poster for Ninja Assassin features Rain but half of his face is off the page.

If the movie is a hit, expect studios to focus even more development dollars on films aimed at an international audience. Rain might become the model for the modern movie star.

Says Silver: "As the business becomes more international and we're looking for international growth, it's nice to find someone like Rain who can travel."

Will Avatar change the way we see 3D cinema?
Last updated on: November 19, 2009 19:04 IST

http://im.rediff.com/movies/2009/nov/19slid1.jpg

We might be excited about watching 3D films at our neighbourhood multiplexes pretty much every other week now, but the process has been around for quite a while.

Way back in the 1890s, William Friese-Greene tried projecting images side by side to be viewed through a stereoscope, and the British pioneer thus applied for the first patent for a 3D movie process.

Practical 3D viewing, however, took several decades. The golden era of 3D cinema came in the early 1950s, when there was a multitude of films made for the red and blue anaglyph glasses, the cardboard glasses already popularly distributed with 3D comic books.

Like in the comics, the fundamentals were simple: a red image and a blue image were shot simultaneously at a specific angle to each other, and when viewed together, the effect would culminate in a layering that would appear three-dimensional to the eye.

http://im.rediff.com/movies/2009/nov/19slid2.jpg

In 1953, Warner Bros released House Of Wax, a 3D feature with stereophonic sound. This feature truly popularised stereo sound in American cinema, and created the first 3D star, horror icon Vincent Price.

Price went on to become a 3D superstar -- dubbed 'the king of 3D' at the time -- by starring in the most 3D productions.

Studios started pouring money heavily into 3D, since it brought viewers to theatres by giving them an experience television could not, and both Disney and Columbia went into 3D in a major way, the latter even taking The Three Stooges into 3D, hoping that slapstick would work the best in the new format, with pies being thrown directly at the audience.

http://im.rediff.com/movies/2009/nov/19slid3.jpg

Yet the format was soon plagued by technical issues, mostly owing to synchronised projection and maintaining the quality of prints.

3D became increasingly unprofitable and it was only in 1970 that there was the next big 3D leap -- and it was because of sex, naturally.

The combination of 3D and sex was an obvious one, and Stereovision cashed in bigtime with The Stewardesses, an X-rated feature made on a $100,000 budget that grossed well over $27 million -- and we're talking 1970 money here.

Not just is this still the most profitable 3D film in history, but the softcore skin-flick ran for over a year in some theatres and, thanks to domestic rentals over the decades, has taken in over 300 times its original budget, making it one of the all time biggest film successes.

http://im.rediff.com/movies/2009/nov/19slid4.jpg

In the 1980s, a slew of genre movies were released in 3D, including Friday The 13th Part III, Jaws 3D and Amityville 3D. And while horror continued to lend itself to 3D, the films remained but a passing novelty.

It is only in recent years that things are actually changing. In 2003, James Cameron filmed Ghosts of The Abyss, an IMAX feature which exposed audiences to a whole different kind of 3D.

In 2004, Robert Zemeckis released The Polar Express, IMAX's first full-length animated 3D feature. The film's 3D version made about 14 times more per screen than the 2D version.

Clearly 3D wasn't just a gimmick anymore.

http://im.rediff.com/movies/2009/nov/19slid5.jpg

Yet while IMAX confined the viewers to specific auditoriums, the last couple of years have seen the rise of Disney Digital 3D, which gives pretty much any multiplex access to 3D projection.

Films like Bolt and Up have been major successes in this format.

What's next?

Well, Steven Spielberg said a few years ago that he is involved in a 3D system that doesn't need glasses, based on plasma screens.

Meanwhile, James Cameron is back at bat with Avatar.

http://im.rediff.com/movies/2009/nov/19slid6.jpg

Avatar, a film developed using over $500 million, is the most expensive film ever made. The epic film is slated to advance 3D viewing by a massive leap, offering the viewer an immersive experience like never before.

Shot on cameras made specially for the film, this one could be the big push that takes 3D truly mainstream.

Avatar releases worldwide on December 16, and it could be just what theatre audiences are waiting for -- without even knowing it. Or it could be yet another gigantic misstep.

We'll all know soon enough.

New Moon’ Shatters Opening Day Record

Claiming the record for the biggest one-day gross, The Twilight Saga: New Moon (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=newmoon.htm) raked in an estimated $72.7 million on approximately 8,500 screens at 4,024 sites. The Dark Knight (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=darkknight.htm) was the previous title holder with $67.2 million on around 9,300 screens at 4,366 sites.

New Moon's first day more than doubled that of its predecessor Twilight (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=twilight08.htm), which debuted to $36 million on around 6,000 screens at 3,419 sites. Twilight's first weekend wound up at $69.6 million, which was also less than New Moon's first day. Due to fans storming theaters on its opening day, Twilight's first weekend was heavily Friday-loaded, leading to much lower grosses for Saturday ($21.3 million) and Sunday ($12.4 million). The fan fervor was even more intense for New Moon, so the picture will not maintain Friday's pace throughout the weekend.

New Moon's $72.7 million first day included an estimated $26.3 million from its midnight opening, which was also a record. The Dark Knight made $18.5 million on its midnight opening, which means it generated more business after its midnight showings ($48.7 million) than New Moon did ($46.4 million). The Dark Knight still holds the record for biggest weekend (Friday-Saturday-Sunday) ever: $158.4 million.

Also debuting, The Blind Side (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=blindside.htm) posted a strong estimated $10.9 million on approximately 4,100 screens at 3,110 sites, ranking as the highest-grossing opening day ever for a sports drama. 2012 (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=2012.htm) plummeted 65 percent from last Friday to an estimated $8.1 million, lifting its total to $89.8 million in eight days. Precious (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=main&id=preciouspush.htm) expanded into nationwide release (629 theaters) and boasted a solid estimated $3.6 million, bringing its total to $14 million in 15 days. Meanwhile, Planet 51 (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=planet51.htm) opened to a modest estimated $3.15 million on around 3,400 screens at 3,035 sites.

Fueled by New Moon, Friday set another milestone: the first time the Top Ten movies tallied over $100 million in a single day. All told, the Top Ten movies grossed an estimated $104 million. The previous high, not coincidentally, was the day The Dark Knight opened, July 18, 2008, which came in at $97.5 million.

Ambani Jr, Brad Pitt join hands for sci-fi film
BS Reporter / New Delhi November 22, 2009, 0:23 IST

ADAG will provide help in production and distribution in India.

Reliance Big Entertainment, Anil Ambani’s entertainment arm, and Plan B, Hollywood megastar Brad Pitt’s production company, will together make a sci-fi and action film called Dark Void.

Dark Void is a game owned by Capcom, a developer and publisher of video games. It will release Dark Void for Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony’s Playstation across North America and Europe in January 2010. Subsequently, Reliance Big Entertainment and Plan B will make a film on the same theme.

Dark Void is a combat game centred around Will, a pilot who crash-lands in the Bermuda Triangle after a routine mission and finds himself inside ‘The Void’, an alternate world that resembles primitive earth where aliens with superior technology plan to take over civilisation. According to Capcom Senior Vice-president (licensing) Germaine Gioia, Dark Void was developed as a game keeping a wide screen in mind with a world full of adventure in cinematic scope and scale.

Reliance Big Entertainment had announced its business relationship with Plan B at the Cannes Film Festival last year. Dark Void is the first collaboration between the two partners. "We are delighted that our creative partnership with Plan B has led to this agreement to develop Dark Void along with Capcom. We also look forward to future projects from it," said Reliance Big Entertainment Chairman Amit Khanna in a statement.

Last year, the Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group had signed separate deals with seven Hollywood production houses run by top actors like George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Tom Hanks. In July, the group formalised its association with DreamWorks Studios promoted by Hollywood director Steven Spielberg and his partner Stacey Snider. As part of the deal, the two partners will have 50 per cent each in DreamWorks. It will make movies with an initial funding of $825 million (around Rs 4,100 crore) which is around one-third of Bollywood’s annual turnover.

Under the deal, DreamWorks will make five to six films a year for global audiences, with the first production to begin this year. Spielberg and Snider said the company is already working on films like Tintin and is also talking to Hollywood legend Clint Eastwood for a movie. For the Hollywood studios, Reliance ADAG will provide assistance in production as well as distribution and exhibition in India.

'The Twilight Saga: New Moon' earns $72.7 mn, breaks opening day record
2009-11-22 12:00:00

'The Twilight Saga: New Moon' raked in an estimated $72.7 million on approximately 8,500 screens at 4,024 centres and has broken the record for the biggest one-day gross.

Director Chris Weitz's film beats out 'The Dark Knight', which earned $67.2 million on around 9,300 screens at 4,366 centres.

The first day collection of 'New Moon' is more than double that of its predecessor 'Twilight', which debuted to $36 million on around 6,000 screens at 3,419 centres. In fact the first weekend of 'Twilight' wound up at $69.6 million, which was also less than the opening day collection of the latest instalment of the supernatural movie.

Due to fans storming theatres on its opening day, overwhelming response was recorded on Friday. The film's $72.7 million first day included an estimated $26.3 million from its midnight opening, which was also a record. 'The Dark Knight' made $18.5 million on its midnight opening.

2012 dominates TN box office
Bhama Devi Ravi, TNN 24 November 2009, 02:42am IST

CHENNAI: Call it irony if you will, but 2012', a film on doomsday, is bringing in happy news at box offices across Tamil Nadu. In the opening week, the Hollywood movie, which has also been dubbed into Tamil, grossed Rs 4.2 crores and is expected to rake in around Rs 70 crore in all. A large share of the booty is flowing in thanks to the Tamil version, which accounts for all but six of the 119 prints in the state.

2012' has clicked with the audiences because of the combination of a disaster theme, which comes alive through state-of-the-art Hollywood computer graphics, and smart Tamil dialogues. "Titanic's record of Rs 10 lakh collection in the first week, and that of Mummy' (Rs 9 lakh) have been smashed. The opening collections have beaten the record opening for a Vijay or Suriya film. It will easily gross Rs 70 crore and may touch Rs 100 crore all over the country," says AV Mohan of Seven Star International , distributors of the film.

"Dubbing a Hollywood film in Tamil is not a new trend in the state, but to emerge a winner, you need to translate the dialogues well, improvise to match the lip sync and ensure tonal quality," says Kalyanam, manager, Four Frames Studio, where Slumdog Millionaire' was dubbed.

"The process may take less than two weeks, but it calls for a lot of professionalism," says SN Vijayagopal, whose Vijaya Bala Cine Arts has dubbed a number of Chinese films. "Expert translation, matching the original music with your own music director and getting quality dubbing artistes are the bare minimum. And if the story is good, you have a runaway hit," he adds.

Even multiplexes are screening the Tamil version. It is eerie, listening to John Cusack trying to win over his estranged family in Tamil, or Danny Glover (he plays the American President) sounding like your local politician. But nobody is complaining. As the sci-fi adventure unfolds and a crack in the Sistine Chapel occurs, a howl goes up among the crowd, and when California splits from Los Angeles and caves into the sea, shrill whistles reverberate in the halls.

When the film, directed by Roland Emmerich, released in the state 10 days ago, even the north-east monsoon could not keep the audiences away.

Crowds thronged the Vellore Vishnu theatre, so much so that the manager stopped issuing tickets and let the people stand and watch, says owner Thirunavukkarasu. In Chennai, the Mayajaal multiplex had to send for another print since its 14 screens could not keep up with the demand.

Incidently, I saw the "Movie My Sister's Keeper."

By far, this movie is one of the touching movies i have seen.

The movie is about a cancer child and her 11 year old sister who is used to provide her with blood and bone marrow when needed. The sister files a case in court to stop the parents from using her body to help her sister. The movie goes back and forth, showing flashbacks into small, small points of their life.

Wonderfully told, the movie goes awesome with a superb background music and a well written script/narration.

The film is held together with a kind of relationship not present in normal American movies.

Verdict: A great movie which I am gonna save fora lifetime.

Indian multiplexes go 3-D for 'Avatar'

26 Nov 2009, 2056 hrs IST, IANS

NEW DELHI: With celebrated Hollywood filmmaker James Cameron's much-anticipated three-dimensional (3D) sci-fi epic "Avatar" slated for worldwide
release Dec 18, Indian multiplexes have begun setting up 3D screens.

According to industry insiders, the number of 3D screens in the country is expected to increase from around 40 currently to about 70 by the time the movie is released.

"I believe that the 3D version of 'Avatar' is going to be the revolutionary movie for this generation," said Aditya Shroff of Fame Cinemas in a statement.

"Hence, Fame is trying to go as wide as possible with the 3D release," added Shroff, who is in charge of the company's distribution, programming and corporate sales businesses.

Conceived by Cameron 14 years ago, the movie is being touted as a "fully immersive cinematic experience of a new kind" and a "revolutionary technology" that will "alter movie-making experience" across the globe.

"Avatar" has been shot using the fusion digital 3D camera developed by Cameron and Vince Pace, the movie's director of photography.

To be released in both the 2-D and 3-D format, the film is the director's comeback venture after his multiple Oscar-winning "Titanic" (1997).

It'll also be dubbed in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu for Indian viewers.

As of now, the capital has 3D compatible screens at PVR's Ambience and Select Citywalk multiplexes.

Single-screen theatres like Central Plaza in Mumbai and Urvasi in Bangalore are also going 3D before the release.

Cinemax in Andheri, Mumbai has updated itself with the technology while cinema chain Inox will have 3D screens in Pune, Baroda, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Nagpur, Raipur, Rajasthan, Indore and Kolkata.

But multiplex chains like Spice Cinemas and Wave on the other hand have decided to stick to the 2D format.

"We don't have that provision and will be running the movie on the 2D format, as 3D requires digital projectors and we run on telecine machine," said Amit Awasthi, programming and operations manager of Noida-based Spice.

"A digital machine costs around Rs.45 lakh where you have to download a movie and then play it. You also have to make some changes in the screen to
make it 3D compatible," Awasthi told IANS.

Said Fox Star Studios India chief executive Vijay Singh: "The dramatic increase in the number of 3D screens, as well as the strong interest that we are getting from the Hindi, Tamil and Telugu language markets reaffirms the strong buzz for the film."

Produced by Twentieth Century Fox, the motion picture is a blend of live-action photography and virtual photo realistic production techniques.

It is also touted as the most expensive film ever, made at a whopping $230-million (Rs.1,200-crore) budget.

Starring Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver and Zoe Saldana, the movie depicts the story of a wounded ex-marine thrust unwillingly into an effort to exploit an exotic planet rich in bio-diversity, who eventually crosses over to lead the indigenous race in a battle for survival.

Scrabble Entertainment, the only digital cinema initiative (DCI)-compliant deployment entity in India -- which is also an intermediary between content owners including major studios and independent distributors and exhibitors -- is upbeat about the development.

"The demand for 2K digital and 3D systems is from all corners of the county. Even the single-screen exhibitors want to capitalise on the opportunity of screening 'Avatar' in 3D," said Scrabble chief executive Ranjit Thakur.

"The demand for the film has created a worldwide shortage of digital equipment," Thakur added.

Roman Polanski to be released on bail

http://newsfromrussia.com/img/idb/roman_polanski_1-1.jpg

Thursday, 26 November , 2009, 11:33

A Swiss court said on Wednesday that film director Roman Polanski can be released from prison on bail of 4.5 million Swiss francs ($4.5 million), but must stay under house arrest.

"The court judged that the bail offered... combined with the other measures such as the deposit of identification documents and the assignment to his residence under electronic surveillance are considered sufficient to prevent the risk of fleeing," said the Federal Criminal Tribunal (TFP) in the town of Bellinzona.

The decision may still be appealed, the TFP said.

A previous request for release on bail had been rejected in late October by the Swiss Federal Office of Justice on the grounds that the risk of fleeing was too high.

Polanski, 76, was arrested in Zurich on September 26, based on a US warrant issued in 1978 stemming from Polanski's admission to having unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl in California in 1977.

Polanski fled the US after spending 42 days in prison for psychiatric tests and has never been sentenced.

A Los Angeles court set a Dec 10 date for a hearing in the case against the Franco-Polish filmmaker, the New York Times said earlier this month.

In the December hearing, Polanski's lawyers are to appeal a US Superior Court decision from May, which rejected Polanski's request to close the case against him owing to legal flaws in the 1978 proceedings. The court argued that Polanski had to argue his case personally.

The US requested his extradition two weeks ago. Polanski is expected to fight the extradition.

Peter Jackson says Tintin film is 'finished'
By Mark Savage

http://blog.christianitytoday.com/ctmovies/upload/2009/03/tintin-spielberg-jackson.jpg

Jackson is producing The Hobbit, Tintin, and a remake of The Dam Busters
Steven Spielberg's Tintin film is in the can, but it will take two years for the computer animation to be completed, producer Peter Jackson has said.

The Lord Of The Rings director told the BBC: "Tintin is great. It's made. The movie is cut together and now [we] are turning it into a fully-rendered film".

"So the movie, to some degree, exists in a very rough state."

The director is in London for the Royal gala premiere of his latest film, The Lovely Bones, on Tuesday night.

Based on Alice Sebold's best-selling novel, the movie is told from the perspective of a murdered teenage girl who reaches out to her family from the afterlife.

Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall will attend the premiere alongside stars Saoirse Ronan, Susan Sarandon and Mark Wahlberg.

The film was originally supposed to be released in March 2008, but will now hit cinemas in January - prompting speculation that film company Paramount has Oscar hopes for the drama.

Hobbit 3D?

Jackson has already won three Academy Awards in 2004 for the final Lord Of The Rings film, The Return Of The King.

He is currently revisiting JRR Tolkien's world by adapting The Hobbit for the big screen, although he has handed over directorial duties to Guillermo Del Toro.

The project is currently in pre-production, and Jackson said he had been scouting for locations in New Zealand immediately before travelling to London.

He stressed that there would be continuity between his films and Del Toro's, despite the latter being better known for macabre material like Pan's Labyrinth.

"We're writing the screenplays with him, so in terms of the script, there is continuity," he said.

"We're writing Ian McKellen's dialogue just the same as we did in Lord Of The Rings. But Guillermo, being the director, will obviously take the script and interpret that and shoot his film. So that'll be interesting to see.

"That's actually the reason I wanted him to do it. I felt like I'd be trying to compete with myself and deliberately do things differently, which is not the way I want to work. I want it to be natural."

Unlike Tintin, he revealed, The Hobbit will not be filmed in 3D, despite the current vogue for the technology in the movie industry.

"Guillermo wants to shoot in 35mm, old-fashioned film," Jackson said, "which suits me, because he wants to keep it in the same space as the original trilogy".

But Jackson gave a cautious welcome to 3D, saying it "only adds to the experience" of watching a movie.

"The only thing I get annoyed about is the image being a little dull.

"It does feel like you're looking at the movie with sunglasses on. But literally, that could just be about getting brighter bulbs in the projectors."

'Avatar' grosses Rs. 6.75 crores on opening day! IndiaGlitz [Sunday, December 20, 2009] http://icdn.indiaglitz.com/common/none.gif http://icdn.indiaglitz.com/common/news/Avatar201209_1c.jpgJames Cameron’s much awaited magnum opus ‘AVATAR’ grossed Rs. 6.75 crores on opening day itself, making it the biggest ever Friday opening for any Hollywood film in India!
Cameron’s Avatar that released in India yesterday (Dec 18) in 2D as well as 3D has in fact beaten recent films like Kurbaan, Paa & Rocket Singh with a stupendous release day opening of Rs 6.75 crores across India.
Gross collections from Paid Previews across India amount to Rs 1 Crore, highest for any Hollywood film in India!
Collections from CI single screens also extremely encouraging, with theatres in Delhi, Bihar, Lucknow, Kanpur, Bhopal, Allahbad, Varanasi, Jalandar, Jammu going Houseful on opening day.
Directed by James Cameron & Produced by 20th Century Fox, ‘Avatar’ is an epic action adventure. The film was first conceived by Cameron 14 years ago, when the means to realize his vision did not yet exist.
Starring Sam Worthington, Siqourney Weaver & Zoe Saldana, ‘Avatar’ is the story of a wounded ex-marine, thrust unwillingly into an effort to settle and exploit an exotic planet rich in bio-diversity, who eventually crosses over to lead the indigenous race in a battle for survival.
Cameron again combines elements of massive spectacle and intimate character to tell a relatable and emotional tale.
Avatar released worldwide on Dec 18 in 2D as well as 3D. In India, the film is dubbed in Hindi, Tamil & Telegu.

Roger Ebert's review on Jason Reitman's Up in the Air starring George Clooney...

Up in the Air :: rogerebert.com :: Reviews (http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20091202/REVIEWS/912029999)

" This isn't a comedy. If it were, it would be hard to laugh in these last days of 2009. Nor is it a tragedy. It's an observant look at how a man does a job. Too many movie characters have jobs involving ruling people, killing them, or going to high school. Bingham loves his work. He doesn't want a home. He doesn't want a family. He gives self-help lectures on how and why to unpack the backpack of your life.

George Clooney (http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/classifieds?category=search1&SearchType=1&q=George%20Clooney&Class=%25&FromDate=19150101&ToDate=20091231) plays Bingham as one of those people you meet but never get to know. They go through all the forms, and know all the right moves, and you're “friends,” but — who's in there? At his funeral, people confess they never really knew him. Sitting in a first-class seat one day, asked where he lives, Bingham says, “Here.” "

One of 2009's most underrated film has been Australian director John Hillcoat's Hollywood debut The Road based on Cormac McCarthy's novel.
It stars Viggo Mortensen, Chalize Theron, Robert Duvall, Guy Pearce...

I don't think it has gotten much publicity or anything...maybe its coz the Weinstein Co. is behind this and so far its gotten only limited release...
It is essentially an apocalyptic film like 2012 but much better...

Viggo Mortensen deserves the Oscar for 2009 as Best Actor!!

Darren Bevan reviews Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island | ENTERTAINMENT News (http://tvnz.co.nz/entertainment-news/shutter-island-movie-review-3369789)

Shutter Island
Rating: 8/10
Cast: Leonardo di Caprio, Ben Kingsley, Mark Ruffalo, Michelle Williams, Max von Sydow
Director: Martin Scorsese
Scorsese and di Caprio reteam for this spooky mystery thriller adapted from the book by Dennis Lehane (who wrote Mystic River), which was pushed back from last year amid rumours the film company didn't have the cash needed to promote it because of the recession.
Di Caprio stars as US Marshall Teddy Daniels who's sent to a mental asylum on Shutter Island to investigate the disappearance of an inmate who is believed to still be somewhere on the island.
However, along with his partner Chuck (Mark Ruffalo), he finds his investigation blocked at every turn by the doctors in charge of the facility (chiefly Ben Kingsley's Dr Cawley). And as the pair find themselves stranded on the island by a storm, Teddy starts to suffer from flashbacks to the murder of his wife (Michelle Williams) and unsure of exactly who to trust.

Spooky, creepy and full of generally unsettling images, Shutter Island manages to be both disturbing and a masterclass in film making. Once again Martin Scorsese's created a cinematic experience which is full of his trademark camera work and vision which builds a claustrophobic world where you're never quite sure what's going on. Along with a great use of soundtrack and silence, the overall atmosphere is one of menace and uncertainty.
Di Caprio's pretty damn good as the marshall who's struck by visions of his dead wife as he investigates the disappearance - and he starts to unravel the further in he looks into what goes on; equally the supporting cast of Mark Ruffalo and Ben Kingsley do well to keep the mystery going. And Michelle Williams is haunting as Teddy's wife who perished in a fire set by someone Teddy believes is in the asylum.
If you're a regular film goer, you may well spot what's going on - but I guarantee you you won't pick up 100% of what exactly is happening - and yes there's plenty to discuss about the film but unless you want spoilers, here is not the place.
Shutter Island is a moody, enigmatic return from Scorsese - and it's great to see him tackle something slightly different - and he brings to it echoes of the Shining and pulp B movies. It's quite a thrilling ride and while there are a few lulls and the film feels a little long at the end, Shutter Island is a film with a compelling mystery wrapped up in it which will keep you onboard until the credits roll.

Watched Shutter Island. This psychological thriller goes into my list of favourites following Mulholland Drive and A tale of two sisters.

This again is a movie where you can make your own intrepretation.I always love such movies. What surprised me is it came from Scorsese and I never expected he would direct such a plot with so many twists and turns.

The story is about a federal marshall Teddy played by Di caprio and his partner Chuck goes to a prison in a mysterious island called Shutter Island to investigate a missing criminal. To say anything else would destroy the thrill.

Recommended for all the unconventional movie lovers who would love to strtch their grey cells..

i'd a feeling u'l like this being a fan of such films:biggrin:...but surprising that it stretched ur grey cells, coz it wasn't hugely different from any of the genre-predecessors n most of it was easily predictable...for me, personally a bit of a letdown coming that it does from the master director, tho the film has its merits! waiting for his next, and hope he gets rid of his leonardo fixation soon:nono:!

Ishtapettilla alle. :p
The movie made me think. It has so many instances which make you think that caprio is sane so does he is insane. It leads to multiple viewings. Eventually you get obsessed with caprios' character. thats what happened to me.

Phycological thrillers, always my favourites...

Caprio doesnt have a role in his next movie,The invention of hugo Cabret.

***from imdb***
Set in 1930s Paris, an orphan who lives in the walls of a train station is wrapped up in a mystery involving his late father and a robot.
*************
Scorsese is in a different direction, guess he's tired of mobs and gangsters..

Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan starrer "The Karate Kid" has earned Rs.4.5 crore (Rs.45 million) in its initial weekend in India.

Gaining the top spot at the US box office this weekend with $56 million, the Sony Pictures' movie released here in three languages - English, Hindi and Tamil. The dubbed Telugu version will release July 2.

"The film has universal appeal and has been greatly appreciated by action fans and family audiences. We continue to expect strong numbers in the coming week, thanks to the extremely positive word of mouth and the fact that many shows were housefull during the weekend," Kercy Daruwala, Sony Pictures' managing director, said in a press statement.

Talking about the film's promotion here, Sony's director-marketing Bhavesh Thakkar said: "Due to ongoing summer vacation and the central character being a kid we targetted them aggressively... We also targeted Tamil Nadu very strongly since it has a huge and loyal Jackie Chan fan base," he added.

"The Karate Kid" also opened at the top position in several Asian markets including Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Philippines and is still to release in territories like Europe and China.

Directed by Harald Zwart and produced by Jaden's superstar father Will Smith, it is a remake of the 1984 film of the same name.

The plot revolves around a Detroit-based 12-year-old boy Dre Parker who moves to China with his mother. When he joins school, he is bullied by his classmates. He makes an unlikely ally in the form of his ageing maintenance man Mr. Han, a Kung Fu master who teaches him the secrets of self-defence.

Film critic Peter Travers first to review and praise Christoper Nolan's Inception

To say INCEPTION (http://www.joblo.com/upcomingmovies/movies.php?id=3316) is a highly anticipated film around these parts is, frankly, one hell of an understatement. Add to the fact that we're having a pretty underwhelming summer season, and suddenly Chris Nolan's cinematic bit of mindf*ckery - with its big budget spectacle and stellar cast - has become THE film we hope will save it all.

Well this will get your motor running. Rolling Stone film critic Peter Travers is the first to review INCEPTION, and his words are pretty much what we as movie fans have all wanted to hear. The full review is not yet online, but The New York Post quotes the first paragraph from Rolling Stone magazine. It's enough to give you a taste, and best of all, it doesn't get into any spoilers. Here's the quote:

"The mind-blowing movie event of the summer arrives just in time to hold back the flow of Hollywood sputum that's been sliming the multiplex. 'Inception'...will be called many things, starting with James Bond Meets 'The Matrix.' You can feel the vibe of Ridley Scott's 'Blade Runner' in it, and Nolan's own 'Memento' and 'The Dark Knight.' But 'Inception' glows with a blue-flame intensity all its own. Nolan creates a dream world that he wants us to fill with our own secrets. I can't think of a better goal for any filmmaker. Of course, trusting the intelligence of the audience can cost Nolan at the box (http://www.joblo.com/index.php?id=32719#) office. We're so used to being treated like idiots. How to cope with a grand-scale epic, shot in six countries at a reported cost of $160 million, that turns your head around six ways from Sunday? Dive in and drive yourself crazy, that's how."

INCEPTION f*cks minds everywhere on July 16th.

The Last Airbender is boring

Aseem Chhabra reviews The Last Airbender.
It is a big holiday weekend in the US and Pondicherry-born M Night Shyamalan is back with his own uninspired summer film. His latest work The Last Airbender -- based on a popular animated show on Nickelodeon for young teens -- projects a grand Hollywood vision and lot of financial might, but the film is not much entertaining and gets quite dull after the brief initial burst of energy.
No surprise there since Shyamalan's films have been on a decline since The Sixth Sense scared the wits out of millions of people around the world. If there is one interesting aspect of Shyamalan, it is this: he is the only A-list Hollywood director of Indian origin and his combined films have grossed nearly $840 million in the US alone
I remember sitting watching The Sixth Sense in a theatre in New York City's Greenwich Village. I was engaged, but found the screaming women seated around me in the theatre more terrifying then the images on the screen. After the second viewing, I began to see holes in the film's plot. In fact, all of his films lack basic logic and hence are flawed.
The Sixth Sense was a huge success earning nearly $300 million in the US and another $360 million in the rest of the world. His subsequent films became less interesting -- flat stories and performances, and unimaginative twists. The Mel Gibson [ Images (http://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=mel+gibson) ] starrer Signs (2002) was a hit. But all of the filmmaker's other works have been critical and box office failures. I was fairly intrigued by his last film The Happening (2008) and found parts of it quite scary. But most critics and audience had a very tepid response to that film.
For a number of years now Shyamalan has been trying to break away from the pattern of making suspense thrillers -- although I would argue that most of his films lacked the Hitchcockian narrative structure. For a brief time Shyamalan was attached to Life of Pi. Mercifully that project is now in the hands of a more able filmmaker Ang Lee [ Images (http://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=ang+lee) ].
If the press notes of The Last Airbender are to be believed, Shyamalan has long been fascinated by idea of doing a franchise type film. Airbender would fulfill his desire to make his Star Wars [ Images (http://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=star+wars) ] like epic fantasy. And with the new film, Shyamalan could find fans in a different demographic group, since his post-The Sixth Sense followers have been abandoning him faster than he would like.
The premise of Airbender (the television show was called Avatar: The Last Airbender) is the sort that would appeal to sci-fi fans and those whose lives are all consumed by epic fantasies, and a narrative cross-section of anime and martial arts. These are the type of people -- often adults and kids -- who attend fantasy conventions, dressed up in costumes, collect comic books, trading cards and limited edition plastic toys that resemble their favourite characters.
According to the storyline the world was once divided into four tribal nations -- defined by elements Air, Water, Earth and Fire. The Fire Nation -- led by dark skinned evil minded people (including two actors of Indian origin Dev Patel [ Images (http://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=dev+patel) ] and Asif Mandvi, and Maori performer Cliff Curtis from New Zealand [ Images (http://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=new+zealand) ]), have been waging wars at the other tribes, and the balance and harmony of the world is in jeopardy. Only one person -- the Avatar has the ability to bend all four elements and bring peace on earth.
The Avatar in the film (played by a 12-year-old Taekwondo trained first-time actor Noah Ringer) is an expert Airbender, but he still has to sharpen his other bending skills. Meanwhile the enemies from the Fire Nation, including the commander's son Prince Zuko (Patel) are hatching plans to capture the young Avatar.
http://im.rediff.com/movies/2010/jun/30last2.jpgThere are grand battle scenes, and Airbender is packed with special effects and CGI generated spectacular images. It is presented in 3D format -- an annoying viewing experience for those who already wear glasses, and have to place another set on top to get the special effect.
Like the recent Clash of the Titans, Airbender was originally shot in 2D, but later converted to the 3D format, clearly because of the huge success of James Cameron's [ Images (http://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=james+cameron) ] Avatar. The result of the afterthought, late conversion is hardly impressive. There are few sections where the 3D design works. But most of Airbender would have been the same without the 3D gimmick.
Airbender is Patel's first film after the huge success of Slumdog Millionaire [ Images (http://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=slumdog+millionaire) ]. The young British Indian actor tries hard, but he delivered a far more appealing and winnable performance in Danny Boyle's [ Images (http://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=danny+boyle) ] surprise hit film. Mandvi also has a substantial screen time and speaking lines in the film, but he looks fatigued.
Shyamalan and crew put in a lot of hard work, including shooting the film's early sequences in Greenland. Large sets were created to project the different tribal nations. The film's budget seems to be huge. The same money could have funded at least eight to ten inspired indie productions.
Ultimately it is Shyamalan's writing that defeats the film. The script is uninteresting and how much CGI can one take when the characters and their stories are boring.

http://icdn1.indiaglitz.com/hindi/news/avat100710_1.jpg 20th Century Fox will be re-releasing James Cameron's ‘Avatar: Special Edition’ in theaters worldwide (including India) on 27 August, in a limited engagement and exclusively in Digital 3D and IMAX 3D. This version of Cameron’s movie will include more than eight minutes of new footage. Since – and largely as of result of - Avatar's release last December, the number of available digital 3D screens has exploded, and moviegoers who missed experiencing the film in 3D will now have that opportunity.

Cameron said, "Audiences repeatedly told me they wanted more of Pandora, and wished they could have stayed there longer. So we’re making that possible. Avatar: Special Edition will be exclusively in 3D, and will have eight minutes of never before seen footage, including new creatures and action scenes. Whether you already love the movie, or you've never seen it, with this Special Edition, you'll be seeing it like never before."
Fox Filmed Entertainment chairmen and CEOs Jim Gianopulos and Tom Rothman: added, "Avatar: Special Edition is especially gratifying, because not only has Avatar become one of the most beloved films in history, but after its initial theatrical release, we have been inundated with requests to re-release the film in theaters in 3D. Equally important, we’re thrilled that Jim Cameron is able to give audiences even more of what they loved about Avatar.”

Fox Star Studios India CEO Vijay Singh said, “The re-release of Avatar along with the additional footage will enable millions of Indians to once again experience the magic of the film in 3D. And with the significant growth of 3D screens over the last 6 months, we are excited that Avatar will also reach out to new audiences in 3D across many more centers around the country.”

‘Avatar’ is the highest grossing film of all time, taking in over $2.7 billion in worldwide box office. It is also the top-selling Blu-ray disc of all time.

Watched "The girl with the dragon tattoo" a Swedish movie adapted from the Swedish best seller trilogy "The millennium". It is a multi layered story
about a journalist who investigate a murder mystery with the help of a professional female hacker (who is actually the girl with the dragon tattoo....gripping performance by Noomi Rapace). The lead pair have their own troubling flashbacks and this side line stories run parallel to the investigation of a beautiful girl who vanished forty years ago from her family's island estate without a trace. At places you feel there are too many stories in it and you feel the length of the movie too. But the director of Se7en and Zodiac won't disappoint you. It got both, the darkness of Se7en and the thrills of Zodiac. Highly recommend.

about a journalist who investigate a murder mystery with the help of a professional female hacker (who is actually the girl with the dragon tattoo....gripping performance by Noomi Rapace).
