"Top Gun" director Tony Scott fatally jumped off the Vincent Thomas Bridge in San Pedro on Sunday afternoon, according to Los Angeles police sources.
His body was pulled out of the water by Los Angeles Police Department, California Highway Patrol and U.S. Coast Guard officials.
Investigators found a suicide note in his car, which was parked on the bridge.
Law enforcement sources said several witnesses saw Scott, the brother of director Ridley Scott, climb over a fence on the bridge and jump off.
The coroner's office identified him Sunday evening.
Scott was a respected action-movie director who also made "Enemy of the State," "Beverly Hills Cop II" and "Crimson Tide."

The rumors are true (http://insidemovies.ew.com/2012/08/29/julie-delpy-ethan-hawke-reportedly-filming-before-sunset-sequel-in-greece/): Actors Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy and director Richard Linklater just wrapped production in southern Greece on Before Midnight, the third movie in their series about the furtive romance between Celine (Delpy) and Jesse (Hawke) that began with 1995′s Before Sunrise (in Vienna), and continued with 2004′s Before Sunset (in Paris). The announcement also came with a first look image from the film, which you can see above. Producers are aiming for a 2013 release.
Fans of Before Sunset will likely recall that the film concluded with one of the most highly regarded endings in recent cinema history, as Jesse, married with a kid, appeared to decide to miss his plane home to the U.S. to spend more time with Celine. Although no plot details for the follow-up were announced, Delpy, Hawke, and Linklater — who won an Oscar nod for Before Sunset‘s screenplay — did collaborate once again on Before Midnight‘s script. “It’s great to be back together again,” the three said in a statement, “this time in beautiful Greece to revisit the lives of Celine and Jesse nine years after Jesse was about to miss his flight.”
While Hawke has been rather forthright (http://popwatch.ew.com/2011/11/21/ethan-hawke-before-movie/) about working on a follow-up to Before Sunset (http://insidemovies.ew.com/2012/06/13/ethan-hawke-says-before-sunset-follow-up-film-shooting-this-summer/), Linklater and Delpy had remained much more coy about the possibility. At the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, Delpy told EW (http://insidemovies.ew.com/2012/01/25/sundance-chris-rock-julie-delpy-2-days-in-new-york/) that her collaborators were “thinking” about a sequel, but wouldn’t commit to making one out of concern “we don’t find the right thing to say.”
The announcement comes right on the heels of the 2012 Toronto Film Festival, which also serves as a major market for indie distribution. Though the indie film only finished shooting last night, given the widespread popularity of the Before… films and the major anticipation for the follow-up, don’t be too surprised if Before Midnight gets snapped up quickly.

‘Iron Man 3′ Going Full Circle With Ten Rings?

by Rob Keyes (http://screenrant.com/author/rob/)

http://cdn1.screenrant.com/wp-content/uploads/Iron-Man-Ten-Rings.jpg
The story of Iron Man began with Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) getting attacked and captured by a terrorist group known as the Ten Rings while demonstrating a new weapon his company developed for the U.S. military. That moment not only began the origin story of the titular hero who managed to build himself an arc reactor to sustain his health and power his armored suits, but it may have set the foundation for the events of Iron Man 3 (http://screenrant.com/tag/iron-man-3/).

The Ten Rings was a shout out to Iron Man’s archenemy in Marvel Comics, the Mandarin, and refers to the literal ten rings that the Mandarin wears, rings with alien origins. The Mandarin character has been the talk of fans and those involved with the production of Iron Man 1 & 2 since the outset. Days after Iron Man 2 hit theaters for instance, back when it was a given that Favreau would helm number three, he – like Iron Man 2 writer Justin Theroux – made it clear that Iron Man 3 would have to introduce the Mandarin (http://screenrant.com/iron-man-3-details-villain-mandarin-rob-58539/) but they were unsure about how to handle the Ten Rings aspect of the character.

“You’ve got to do the Mandarin… The problem with the Mandarin is that the way it’s depicted in the comic books, you don’t want to see that.
“He has 10 magical rings — that just doesn’t feel right for our [franchise]… So it’s either tech-based, or the rings are not really rings. But maybe with Thor and all those others, you’ll introduce magic to that world and it won’t seem so out of place.”
With Ben Kingsley playing Mandarin in (http://screenrant.com/iron-man-3-villain-ben-kingsley-mandarin-rob-163907/)Iron Man 3 (http://screenrant.com/iron-man-3-villain-ben-kingsley-mandarin-rob-163907/), the Ten Rings will make a return, but it’s a mystery as to how. This unsurprising fact was confirmed today by Latino Review (http://latino-review.com/2012/09/25/exclusive-iron-man-3-brings-ten-rings/) who managed to acquire photos of one of the production’s crew hats which has the film name on the back, and on the front, the Ten Rings logo as depicted in the original Iron Man (pictured up top).
http://cdn1.screenrant.com/wp-content/uploads/Iron-Man-3-Hat-Ten-Rings-570x333.jpg (http://screenrant.com/iron-man-3-ten-rings/iron-man-3-hat-ten-rings/)
At Comic-Con (http://screenrant.com/iron-man-3-marvel-studios-comic-con-2012-rob-185642/) this summer, director Shane Black flat out confirmed the speculation of Kingsley’s role before playing several minutes of footage (http://screenrant.com/iron-man-3-marvel-studios-comic-con-2012-rob-185642/) from the film, a sizzle reel that concluded with a 360 degrees shot of Kingsley in full Mandarin costume, ten rings and all.
Mandarin is undoubtedly the leader of the Ten Rings organization and it wouldn’t be a stretch to assume that Iron Man 3 is going to do something similar to that of The Dark Knight trilogy in that the villainous faction in the origin story will return with its background fleshed out in the third installment, bringing the series full circle. It may be explained that the Mandarin had a lot to do with the events of the first Iron Man that saw Stark kidnapped in order to build weapons of mass destruction, along with many of the events in his family’s past.
In the books, Mandarin embraces and uses technology much like Tony Stark. He’s sabotaged military tech (including Stark weapons and vehicles) to turn them against other nations during their multiple encounters, and from the footage we’ve seen already, we know that in Iron Man 3, Mandarin sends attack helicopters to destroy Stark’s home.
http://cdn1.screenrant.com/wp-content/uploads/Mandarins-ten-rings-570x558.jpg (http://screenrant.com/iron-man-3-ten-rings/mandarins-ten-rings/)
We also know that the Extremis technology from Warren Ellis “Extremis” miniseries (http://screenrant.com/iron-man-3-plot-details-extremis-sandy-158866/) is playing a key part in the story and that Mandarin will attempt to use it for very bad reasons. What we don’t know is how the rings factor in. So far, the “Ten Rings” a name and a symbol representing a terrorist group. The origins of the logo and why Mandarin wears them are still a mystery. Black has compared the Iron Man 3 screenplay to that of a Tom Clancy thriller with “real-world villains (http://screenrant.com/iron-man-3-shane-black-script-schrad-104711/)” – seemingly removing any possibility of the Mandarin having supernatural abilities – but could we be in for another twist where the Ten Rings are of supernatural or otherworldly origins?
In the comics, the Mandarin character discovered a crashed alien ship and that’s where he acquired the rings. We keep hearing Iron Man 3 is very “grounded,” but with Thor and The Avengers taking moviegoers to other worlds and realms, the idea of ten alien rings are not that much of a stretch.
Iron Man 3 is directed by Shane Black based off of his and Drew Pearce’s screenplay, and stars Robert Downey Jr., Ben Kingsley, Don Cheadle, Gwyneth Paltrow, Guy Pearce, Jon Favreau, Rebecca Hall, Cobie Smulders, William Sadler, James Badge Dale and the voice of Paul Bettany.
Iron Man 3 releases May 3, 2013, Thor: The Dark World on November 8, 2013, Captain America: The Winter Soldier on April 4, 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1, 2014 (http://screenrant.com/guardians-of-the-galaxy-release-date-rob-184459/) and The Avengers 2 on May 1, 2015.

Iron Man is so much popular thanks to RDJr. his style, personality did half the job. IM2 was such a weak movie n still ran well.

from the trailer, IM3 seems to go the usual superhero trilogy way, fall, disgrace n a similar enemy.. Spiderman 3 pole.

but nothing like TDKR... (theres Nolan superhero films n the rest - athathreyullu.. )

I think you will want to see this daring and visionary film, directed by Lana Wachowski, Tom Tykwer and Andy Wachowski. Anywhere you go where movie people gather, it will be discussed. Deep theories will be proposed. Someone will say, "I don't know what in the hell I saw." The names of Freud and Jung will come up. And now you expect me to unwrap the mystery from the enigma and present you with a nice shiny riddle?

Official ‘Iron Man 3′ Synopsis

Marvel Studios’ “Iron Man 3″ pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?
Starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale with Jon Favreau and Ben Kingsley, “Iron Man 3″ is directed by Shane Black from a screenplay by Drew Pearce and Shane Black and is based on Marvel’s iconic Super Hero Iron Man, who first appeared on the pages of “Tales of Suspense” (#39) in 1963 and had his solo comic book debut with “The Invincible Iron Man” (#1) in May of 1968.
“Iron Man 3″ is presented by Marvel Studios in association with Paramount Pictures and DMG Entertainment. Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige is producing and Jon Favreau, Louis D’Esposito, Stephen Broussard, Victoria Alonso, Alan Fine, Charles Newirth, Stan Lee and Dan Mintz are executive producers. The film releases May 3, 2013, and is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

“Well, there’s going to be a big fight sequence with The Mandarin, who’s the main villain, which will involve none other than forty different iron man suits. There’s an amazing rescue where The Mandarin basically wants to bring down the American government and kill the President, and he launches an attack on Air Force One. All of them – the President and his men and staff – get sucked out of the plane, and Iron Man rescues them by forming this amazing human chain in the sky.
“There’s some pretty spectacular stuff that goes on. There’s an amazing sequence where he has this rooftop house that he builds to store all his Iron Man suits, and it gets attacked by The Mandarin and these gunships [...] I was shocked to discover there are like forty Iron Man suits written into this feature in various ways…so that’s going to be pretty impressive. But apparently he needs this Iron Man army to go up against The Mandarin’s forces.”

Official ‘Thor: The Dark World’ Synopsis

Marvel’s “Thor: The Dark World” continues the big-screen adventures of Thor, the Mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself. In the aftermath of Marvel’s “Thor” and “Marvel’s The Avengers,” Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos…but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all.
Starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Stellan Skarsgård, Idris Elba, Christopher Eccleston, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Kat Dennings, Ray Stevenson, Zachary Levi, Tadanobu Asano and Jaimie Alexander with Rene Russo and Anthony Hopkins as Odin, “Thor: The Dark World” is directed by Alan Taylor, produced by Kevin Feige, from a story by Don Payne (credit not final) and screenplay by Christopher Yost and Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely (credit not final) and is based on Marvel’s classic Super Hero Thor, who first appeared in the comic book “Journey into Mystery” #83 in August, 1962.
“Thor: The Dark World” is presented by Marvel Studios. The executive producers are Louis D’Esposito, Alan Fine, Stan Lee, Victoria Alonso, Craig Kyle and Nigel Gostelow. The film releases November 8, 2013, and is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

“Thor becomes reunited with Jane who becomes possessed by a Dark Spirit, which is connected with the Dark Elves; a race the Asgardians have fallen out with many years beforehand [...] The Dark Elves attack Asgard, and they take a huge hit. So Thor has to rebuild Asgard by putting together an army to go and take the battle to the Dark Elves and defeat them. But the only way he can do this is – he needs to cross over to the Dark World, and the only person who has access to the dark side of Asgard is his old brother Loki, who at the beginning of the film is locked up in prison.
“So what happens is Thor basically has to negotiate this truce with Loki, and he goes on this great trek with Jane, all three of them. They go to this far side of Asgard, which is being shot in Iceland, where they train and assemble an army to go and attack the Dark Elves’ world.”

“But the exclusive twist…is that one of the things that happens during the Asgardian attack is that Thor’s mother gets killed. So it becomes like a vengeance thing. And they were keeping very tight-lipped about what actually happens with Loki, you don’t know whether he redeems himself or he’s still the bad egg.”

Skyfall: Film Review

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/sites/default/files/2012/10/007_a.jpg

The Bottom Line

Bond celebrates his 50th movie birthday with a serious and spectacular show.

And, oh yes, there's Daniel Craig. He owns Bond now, and the role is undoubtedly his for as long as he might want it. Perhaps a tad less buff than in Casino Royale and certainly more beat up, he entertains the ladies less here than perhaps any Bond ever has. But two other women, his boss and the queen, have first call on his favors, and he repays them for their confidence many times over -- as he does the audience.

(Reuters) - Walt Disney Co has agreed to buy filmmaker George Lucas's Lucasfilm Ltd and the "Star Wars" franchise for $4.05 billion in cash and stock, a blockbuster deal that adds one of the most beloved franchises in entertainment history to Disney's lineup.
Disney said there would be a new series of "Star Wars" feature films as part of the deal, with the first movie expected in 2015. Disney Chief Executive Bob Iger, in prepared remarks for analysts, said the plan was to release a new movie in the series every two to three years thereafter.
Lucas, a Hollywood icon known for exercising control over the most minute details of the fictional universe he created, will remain as a creative consultant.
"It`s now time for me to pass 'Star Wars' on to a new generation of filmmakers," he said in a statement. Besides "Star Wars," the deal also includes rights to the "Indiana Jones" franchise, though Disney did not elaborate on any plans for that series.
Disney will pay about half the purchase price in cash and issue about 40 million shares at closing. Chief Financial Officer Jay Rasulo, in prepared remarks, said the deal would lower Disney's earnings (http://www.reuters.com/finance/earnings) per share by a low single-digits percentage in fiscal 2013 and 2014.

Skyfall Has Excellent First Day

Friday 2nd November 2012 14.30 IST

Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Skyfall had an excellent first day of around 5.75 crore nett as the film scored big in South India helped by the fact it was a holiday in some parts. While the collections in the South were record breaking for a Hollywood release in the Hindi belt was much lower. The approx breakdown for Skyfall in all languages is as follows.

Mumbai - 1.50 crore

Delhi/UP - 55 lakhs

East Punjab - 18 lakhs

East India - 30 lakhs

(West Bengal, Bihar, Assam, Orissa)

Central India - 40 lakhs

(CP Berar, CI, Rajasthan)

Skyfall review

Bond is back. The pure nostalgia and adrenaline that the name provides is good enough for you to get to the theatre. Every Bond film is a piece of history. One of the oldest surviving franchises in world cinema, more than 50 years, and still having a huge following, Bond is indeed one of the biggest on screen icons we have. But, once you are past that nostalgia and thrill, which last for around 10 seconds when that trademark soundtrack plays for the first time, then it is the movie per se that has to hold your attention. Bond has your attention, no doubt; he has held it for 50 years. But, does Skyfall have your attention?

PI’S VISUALLY AMAZING: JAMES ‘AVATAR’ CAMERON

Hollywood’s 3D guru James Cameron has been raving about Ang Lee’s Life Of Pi. Praised by critics at the New York Film festival, and already generating Oscar buzz, Ang Lee’s magnum opus Life Of Pi has been topping the list of the most anticipated movies of 2012 since its filming.
“Life Of Pi breaks the paradigm that 3D has to be some big, action fantasy spectacle, superhero movie,” says Cameron, whose 3D production company, Cameron Pace Group, helped equip Lee’s set. The praise certainly means a lot, coming from the creator of the visually spectacular film Avatar. “The movie is visually amazing, inventive, and it works on you in ways you’re not really aware of. It takes you on a journey, and unless you’ve read the book, which I hadn’t, you have no idea where that journey is going. It does what good 3D is supposed to do, which is, it allows you to forget you’re watching a 3D movie,” adds Cameron. The 3D element helped explore new avenues, says Lee, who was recently in the city to showcase exclusive footage from the film to Indian audiences.
“I can’t think of this film without 3D. It may have been cheap in 2D, but the output would’ve been unsatisfactory. Thanks to 3D, I managed to take this film beyond imagination and new possibilities,” says Lee.
Releasing on November 23, the movie is based on the Man Booker Prize-winning novel of the same name by Canadian writer Yann Martel.
It tells the tale of a young boy named Pi, who is the only person to survive the sinking of a cargo ship. He finds himself on a lifeboat with a hyena, a zebra, an orangutan, and a Bengal tiger. Delhibased Suraj Sharma plays young Pi in the film while Tabu and Irrfan Khan feature in key roles. Life Of Pi releases on November 23 in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.

Weekend Report: 'Skyfall' Scores Best Bond Debut Ever

by Ray Subers (http://boxofficemojo.com/authors/?id=11&p=.htm)
http://boxofficemojo.com/image2/bond23_skyfall0104.jpg (http://boxofficemojo.com/gotogallery.php?rid=40195)Skyfall

November 11, 2012

After doing tremendous business overseas in the past two weeks, Skyfall (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=bond23.htm) definitely did not disappoint in its domestic debut this weekend. The 23rd James Bond movie scored an outstanding $87.8 million, which is a new opening weekend record for the 50-year-old franchise. This helped push the Top 12 to an estimated $162.6 million, which is up 29 percent over the same period last year.

Skyfall's opening crushed Quantum of Solace (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=jamesbond22.htm)'s $67.5 million, which was the previous Bond record. It was also double Casino Royale (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=jamesbond21.htm)'s $40.8 million debut, which was star Daniel Craig (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/people/chart/?id=danielcraig.htm)'s first outing as the infamous spy. The debut ranks fourth on the year behind The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=batman3.htm) and The Hunger Games (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=hungergames.htm), and it ranks seventh all-time in November behind two Twilight (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=twilight08.htm) movies and four Harry Potter flicks. Including $2.2 million from Thursday's IMAX/premium-large-format showings, the movie has already earned $90 million total.

Skyfall was always poised to have an impressive debut thanks to the strength of the Bond brand, but the fact that it so handily set the record is due to a number of factors unique to this entry. First, and perhaps most importantly, Daniel Craig is James Bond to most audiences at this point thanks to Casino Royale's ongoing legacy and reinforced by a clever London Olympics opening ceremony cameo seen by hundreds of millions of people worldwide. Additionally, the four-year wait in between movies and the buzz surrounding the 50th anniversary of the character helped to make this feel like more of an event than usual. The enthusiastic reviews ("Best Bond Ever" was a popular one) and Adele's popular theme song helped in the final push as well.

The movie earned a very good $13.1 million, or 15 percent of the four-day haul, from IMAX presentations. The audience was 60 percent male and 75 percent were 25 years of age or older; in comparison, only 58 percent of Quantum's audience was over 25, which suggests that long-time Bond fans made it out at abnormally-high rates for Skyfall.

With the audience skewing older and awarding the movie an "A" CinemaScore, Skyfall is on track for a ton of success in the next few weeks. It's guaranteed to earn over $200 million at the domestic box office, and $250 million doesn't really seem like a stretch either.

In second place, last weekend's winner Wreck-It Ralph (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=rebootralph.htm) eased 33 percent to an estimated $33.1 million. That drop is a bit better than 2010's Megamind (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=mastermind.htm) (37 percent), and the $93.7 million 10-day total is also up on Megamind's $88.8 million.

Flight fell 39 percent to an estimated $15.1 million in its second outing. Its $47.8 million total is noticeably higher than Denzel Washington (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/people/chart/?id=denzelwashington.htm)'s 2010 thriller Unstoppable (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=unstoppable.htm) ($41.9 million) through the same point, and that movie wound up earning over $81 million.

In its fifth weekend, Argo (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=argo.htm) had its steepest drop yet. The Ben Affleck (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/people/chart/?id=benaffleck.htm)-directed thriller fell 35 percent to an estimated $6.7 million, for a new total of $85.7 million. In comparison, The Town (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=town10.htm) was at $80.5 million through a month in theaters.

Taken 2 rounded out the Top Five with an estimated $4 million, which is only off 33 percent from last weekend. That's a remarkable hold given the direct and overwhelming competition from Skyfall. The action sequel has so far earned $131.3 million, and has a legitimate shot at coming very close to its predecessor's $145 million total.

In 15th place, Steven Spielberg (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/people/chart/?id=stevenspielberg.htm)'s Lincoln (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=lincoln.htm) debuted to an estimated $900,000 at 11 locations. That translates to an $81,818 per-theater average, which is second-best ever for a movie in more than 10 locations (behind Precious). It's also third-highest in 2012 behind The Master (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=themaster.htm) and Moonrise Kingdom (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=moonrisekingdom.htm). The historical drama's audience skewed male (55 percent) and much older (67 percent over the age of 35), and they awarded the movie a great "A" CinemaScore. The real test, though, comes next weekend when Lincoln attempts to reach mainstream crowds in at least 1,500 theaters.

Stolen

Nicholas Cage stars in yet another kidnap drama. Dunno why he chose this movie, a theme that has been done to death in Hollywood. Very bad release timing too, straight after Taken 2. Nicholas Cage might start losing his respect for doing such movies. He is associated with high quality entertainment like The Rock, National Treasure etc.

Can't beleive the director is the same man who made Con Air, Lara Croft etc.

Weekend Report: 'Breaking Dawn' Ends 'Twilight' Franchise on Strong Note

by Ray Subers (http://boxofficemojo.com/authors/?id=11&p=.htm)
http://boxofficemojo.com/image2/breakingdawn2_bdpt229.jpg (http://boxofficemojo.com/gotogallery.php?rid=40109)The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2

November 18, 2012

The fifth and final Twilight (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/franchises/chart/?id=twilight.htm) movie opened to an outstanding $141.3 million this weekend, though that wasn't quite enough to set a new record for the popular franchise. Meanwhile, Skyfall (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=bond23.htm) had another strong weekend and Lincoln (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=lincoln.htm) over-performed in its nationwide debut; as a result, the Top 12 earned around $237 million, which makes this the sixth-highest-grossing (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/weekends/top12sum.htm) weekend ever.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=breakingdawn2.htm)'s estimated $141.3 million ranks eighth all-time (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/weekends/) and fourth in 2012 (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/yearly/chart/?view2=opening&yr=2012&p=.htm) behind The Avengers (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=main&id=avengers11.htm), The Dark Knight Rises (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=batman3.htm) and The Hunger Games (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=hungergames.htm). Among Twilight movies, it wound up slightly ahead of predecessor Breaking Dawn Part 1 (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=breakingdawn.htm) ($138.1 million), but a tad below New Moon (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=newmoon.htm)'s franchise-best $142.8 million. This makes Twilight the first franchise ever to have three movies earn over $130 million in their first three days.

While this is undeniably a fantastic debut, there's a nagging feeling it should have done slightly better given the movie's finale status; past franchise finales like The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=returnoftheking.htm), Star Wars: Episode III -Revenge of the Sith (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=starwars3.htm) easily had the best debuts for their series. At least Twilight didn't see much, if any, audience attrition, which is a rare thing for most franchises.

There are a few indications that Breaking Dawn Part 2 could hang on a bit better than its predecessors. First, its Friday-to-Saturday (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/days/saturdaydrops.htm) drop (42 percent) was a slight improvement over Breaking Dawn Part 1 (44 percent). More importantly, it received the best exit polling so far for a Twilight movie, and its "A" CinemaScore ("A+" among those under 25) suggests word-of-mouth will be solid. Ultimately, the movie should earn at least $280 million and could wind up around $300 million.

The audience was 79 female and 21 percent male (highest male share of the franchise so far), and it was split evenly between those above and below 25 years of age.

On Friday, Lionsgate/Summit passed the $1 billion mark for the first time in the company's history, and is now at over $1.1 billion. For 2012, it's going to finish ahead of 20th Century Fox and Paramount, both of which are part of the traditional "Big Six" studios.

In its second outing, Skyfall fell 53 percent to an estimated $41.5 million. In comparison, Quantum of Solace (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=jamesbond22.htm) fell 60 percent in its second weekend. Through 10 days, Skyfall has earned $161.3 million, and by Wednesday it will pass Quantum's $168.4 million to become the highest-grossing Bond movie ever. Also, using Quantum's pattern, there's a good chance Skyfall winds up with $250 million by the end of its run.

Steven Spielberg (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/people/chart/?id=stevenspielberg.htm)'s Lincoln expanded to 1,775 locations this weekend and earned an excellent $21 million. That's easily the best start ever for a narrative feature about a real-life president (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/genres/chart/?view=openings&id=president.htm&p=.htm) ahead of Oliver Stone (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/people/chart/?id=oliverstone.htm)'s 2008 movie W. (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=w.htm) ($10.5 million). It's also noticeably higher than Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=abrahamlincolnvampirehunter.htm)'s $16.3 million. With great reviews, plenty of awards buzz, strong word-of-mouth ("A" CinemaScore) and an audience that skews older (67 percent over 35 years of age), Lincoln should be on track for a very healthy run at the box office.

In fourth place, Wreck-It Ralph (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=rebootralph.htm) dropped 45 percent to an estimated $18.3 million. The animated hit has now grossed $121.5 million, and even with direct competition from Rise of the Guardians (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=guardians.htm) on Wednesday it's still in line for at least $150 million by the end of its run.

Rounding out the Top Five, Flight (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=flight.htm) fell 42 percent to an estimated $8.6 million. Through 17 days, the Denzel Washington (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/people/chart/?id=denzelwashington.htm) addiction drama has grossed $61.3 million.

Opening at 16 locations, Silver Linings Playbook (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=silverliningsplaybook.htm) scored an estimated $458,000. In comparison, writer-director David O. Russell's last movie, The Fighter (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=fighter10.htm), earned $300,010 from just four theaters in its first frame. Aside from tough competition for adult audiences from Skyfall and Lincoln, Silver Linings was also likely hurt by The Weinstein Company's last minute decision to add these playdates, which makes it more difficult to properly raise awareness and book the best screens and the most showtimes. The well-reviewed romantic comedy expands to around 420 theaters on Wednesday.

Anna Karenina (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=annakarenina2012.htm) also debuted at 16 theaters but only earned an estimated $315,000. It's per-theater average was $19,688; director Joe Wright (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/people/chart/?id=joewright.htm)'s Atonement (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=atonement.htm) had a higher average at twice as many locations when it opened in December 2007.

'Life of Pi' (English)
Director: Ang Lee
Cast: Suraj Sharma, Irrfan Khan, Tabu
"Life of Pi" is one of those lyrical,
internalized novels that should have no
business working on the screen. Quite
possibly, it wouldn't have worked if anyone
but Ang Lee had adapted it.
The filmmaker who turned martial arts into
a poetic blockbuster for Western audiences
with "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and
made gay cowboys mainstream fare with
"Brokeback Mountain" has crafted one of
the finest entries in his eclectic resume in
"Life of Pi," a gorgeous, ruminative film that
is soulfully, provocatively entertaining.
Lee combines a lifetime of storytelling
finesse with arguably the most artful use of
digital 3-D technology yet seen to bring to
life Yann Martel's saga of an Indian youth
lost at sea with a ravenous Bengal tiger
aboard his small lifeboat. It's a delicate
narrative with visceral impact, told with an
innovative style that's beguiling to watch and
a philosophical voice that compassionately
explores how and why we tell stories.
Our playful, not-always-reliable narrator
here is Pi Patel, played by newcomer Suraj
Sharma as a teen and as a grown man
reflecting back on his adventure by Irrfan
Khan. As a youth, Pi, his parents and
brother set out from India, where the family
runs a zoo in a botanical garden, to Canada.
Pi's father brings along some of his
menagerie on their voyage, including a tiger
named Richard Parker with which Pi had a
terrifying encounter as a boy.
Their ship sinks in a storm, with Pi the only
human survivor aboard a lifeboat with an
orangutan, a hyena, a zebra with a broken
leg and Richard Parker. Survival of the fittest
thins their numbers into a life-and-death
duel, and eventually an uneasy truce of
companionship, between Richard Parker and
Pi.
This could be a one-note story — please
Mister Tiger, don't eat me. Yet Lee and
screenwriter David Magee find rich and
clever ways to translate even Pi's stillest
moments, the film unfolding through
intricate flashbacks, whimsical voice-overs,
harrowing sea hazards and exquisite flashes
of fantasy and hallucination.
Lee used real tigers for a handful of scenes,
but Richard Parker mostly is a digital
creation, a remarkably realistic piece of
computer animation seamlessly blended
into the live action. The digital detail may be
responsible for most of Richard Parker's
fearful presence, though no small part of the
tiger's impact is due to the nimble
engagement of Sharma with a predator that
wasn't actually there during production, a
task hard enough for experienced
performers, let alone a youth with no acting
experience.
Digital 3-D usually is an unnecessary
distraction not worth the extra admission
price. In "Life of Pi," like Martin Scorsese's
"Hugo," the 3-D images are tantalizing and
immersive, pulling viewers deeper into Pi's
world so that the illusion of depth becomes
essential to the story.
Not all of the images live up to Lee's digital
tiger or 3-D wizardry. Water is notoriously
hard to simulate through computer
animation, and the waves crashing down
around the sinking ship or tossing Pi's
lifeboat about have an unfinished, cartoony
look. Still, Lee more than compensates with
a world of visual wonders, from the simple
image of a swimmer framed from below as
though he's stroking his way across the sky
to a mysterious island populated by a
seemingly infinite number of meerkats.
The rest of the cast is mostly
inconsequential, including Gerard Depardieu
in a fleeting role as a cruel ship's cook. The
other people in Pi's life are filtered through
this unusual youth's eyes, each of them
catalysts in the development of his deep
spirituality, which blends Hinduism,
Christianity, Islam and other contradictory
influences into a weirdly cohesive form of
humanism.
Like Martel's novel, the film disdains our
inclination to anthropomorphize wild
animals by ascribing human traits to them,
and then turns around and subtly does just
that. Friendship cannot possibly exist
between a hungry tiger and a scrawny kid
alone on the open water, yet for that boy, if
not the cat, the need for togetherness, some
commune of spirits, is almost as strong as
the need for food and water. The ways in
which Lee examines the strange bond
between Pi and Richard Parker are
wondrous, hilarious, unnerving, sometimes
joyous, often melancholy.
Pi's story may not, as one character states,
make you believe in God. But you may leave
the theater more open to the possibilities of
higher things in the life of Pi, and in your
own.
