A journey best embarked on 3D

“Do you believe me?” an older Pi asks the writer who has just heard him narrate the unbelievable story of a boy who survived a Tiger in the Pacific after a shipwreck.
“It’s a lot to take in,” replies the writer.
I found myself with the same response when people asked me after the Indian premiere at the International Film Festival of India, Goa.
For a good hour and a half, the middle portion of the film to be specific, the film is a delightfully riveting visual treat, as Pi finds himself on the boat with a zebra, a hyena, an orangutan and a tiger.
If the idea of Pi telling the writer the story was to make him believe in God, Ang Lee sure has succeeded in making us believe in a God that made it possible for words from a Booker-winning book come alive. And how!
The storm that causes the shipwreck and the aftermath - the interplay between the four survivors in a small confined space in the middle of the ocean is fascinatingly etched out.
No dialogues, just computer generated animals with a brilliant debutant Suraj Sharma and Ang Lee crafting magic realism, playing 3D-savvy God.
For almost an hour in the 127 minute long film, it’s just the boy and the tiger. Kids would love to watch this stuff with their mouths wide open. But despite all the jaw dropping awe that the film evokes, it does carry the baggage of philosophy from the book and that’s what makes it a little too long and less market-savvy.
This is not to say it’s bad cinema. It’s as good as it gets if watched in the context of a book that delves deep into religion and God and an understanding of his mysterious ways. These are the portions that may be too much to take for the younger audience that would prefer the spectacle over the philosophy but if you are in the right mood and space for a spiritual journey, Life of Pi is just what you need. IF you are willing to overlook the inconsistency and assortment of different variants of Indian and Canadian accents employed in the film (Tabu's Tamil being the most irksome), you may find little else to complain about.
Young Suraj Sharma couldn't have asked for a better debut and performs like a veteran. This is a performance that will instantly make people draw comparisons with Tom Hanks in Castaway and Suraj wouldn't fare any less in the contest. We shouldn't be surprised if Richard Parker (the computer generated tiger) gets a nomination for best supporting role, that’s how convincing the visual effects are.
It’s hard to tell where cinematography (Claudio Miranda) ends and visual effects begin, especially when you see a magical island full of meerkats. Technically, the film seems set for a big haul at the Oscars.
Just surrender to this movie magic, strictly with your 3D glasses on. For you surely wouldn't have seen anything like this before. Even if it's a little longer than you would've liked.
Genre: Adventure
Director: Ang Lee
Cast: Suraj Sharma, Irrfan Khan, Rafe Spall, Gerard Depardieu, Adil Hussain, Tabu, Shravanthi Sainath
Storyline: A 16 year old boy has to survive a hungry Bengal tiger on a boat after a shipwreck
Bottomline: A visually stunning spectacle that rises above the book's philosophical verbosity

Holy fanboy freak-out, Batman!
Comic book movie lovers were rocked late Monday evening when Drew McWeeny at HitFix.com (http://us.lrd.yahoo.com/_ylt=An7OxW503Xe40IjuFvDVus64AOB_;_ylu=X3oDMTFpNGh 2cjBkBG1pdANCbG9nIFBvc3QgQm9keQRwb3MDMQRzZWMDTWVka WFCbG9nQm9keUFzc2VtYmx5;_ylg=X3oDMTMyZXVzMGI5BGlud GwDdXMEbGFuZwNlbi11cwRwc3RhaWQDZGMxMjk1YWUtNDZiNS0 zMDE3LThkNzQtOGRkYTYzM2IwMjQ5BHBzdGNhdANibG9nc3xtb 3ZpZXRhbGsEcHQDc3RvcnlwYWdl;_ylv=0/SIG=1484asd88/EXP=1355257337/**http%3A//www.hitfix.com/motion-captured/exclusive-is-joseph-gordon-levitt-already-set-to-play-batman-in-justice-league) published a story stating that his sources assured him that "The Dark Knight Rises (http://us.lrd.yahoo.com/_ylt=AsHmuCcPM48pVTQnbOo.kW.4AOB_;_ylu=X3oDMTFpOGp yZm1sBG1pdANCbG9nIFBvc3QgQm9keQRwb3MDMgRzZWMDTWVka WFCbG9nQm9keUFzc2VtYmx5;_ylg=X3oDMTMyZXVzMGI5BGlud GwDdXMEbGFuZwNlbi11cwRwc3RhaWQDZGMxMjk1YWUtNDZiNS0 zMDE3LThkNzQtOGRkYTYzM2IwMjQ5BHBzdGNhdANibG9nc3xtb 3ZpZXRhbGsEcHQDc3RvcnlwYWdl;_ylv=0/SIG=128jk6lvq/EXP=1355257337/**http%3A//movies.yahoo.com/movie/the-dark-knight-rises/)" costar Joseph Gordon-Levitt would be returning to the world of DC Comics to play Batman in the massive superhero team-up movie "Justice League."
Hollywood.com (http://us.lrd.yahoo.com/_ylt=AnvSgbGYRoCFD_zzfiryYRC4AOB_;_ylu=X3oDMTFpaGJ 0OHNsBG1pdANCbG9nIFBvc3QgQm9keQRwb3MDMwRzZWMDTWVka WFCbG9nQm9keUFzc2VtYmx5;_ylg=X3oDMTMyZXVzMGI5BGlud GwDdXMEbGFuZwNlbi11cwRwc3RhaWQDZGMxMjk1YWUtNDZiNS0 zMDE3LThkNzQtOGRkYTYzM2IwMjQ5BHBzdGNhdANibG9nc3xtb 3ZpZXRhbGsEcHQDc3RvcnlwYWdl;_ylv=0/SIG=13vuqarve/EXP=1355257337/**http%3A//www.hollywood.com/news/Joseph_Gordon_Levitt_Batman_Man_of_Steel_Cameo_Jus tice_League_REPORT/45081080) checked with reps for Gordon-Levitt on Tuesday and they completely refuted the report. That the report has been denied shouldn't be a surprise -- it's early yet, after all. But that doesn't mean it won't eventually be true. After all, it was speculated back in 2011 that JGL would be playing Robin in "Dark Knight Rises," and that did (sort of) turn out to be the case.
It's no secret that Warner Bros., the Grand High Studio of franchises, is desperate for its own "Avengers." WB execs want a bunch of stand-alone superhero movies that lead up to one mega-superhero movie that could then branch off into even more stand-alone superhero movies. The template has worked (like gangbusters) for Marvel Studios, turning what was once considered "geek culture" into must-see mainstream entertainment (and making a lot of rich people even richer).
WB wants this to happen fast and have (rather hastily, but whatever) fast-tracked "Justice League," the mighty mashup featuring a handful of DC superheroes (some of which, like the Marvel heroes before them, have never had big-screen incarnations before) for 2015. Rumor has it that Zack Snyder's "Man of Steel," which hits theaters next summer, will be setting the groundwork for "Justice League" by introducing an expanded cinematic universe that will eventually include some of Superman's colleagues, such as Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash and Martian Manhunter (or whoever WB decides to recruit for this first go-round).

[Related: Zack Snyder takes off Superman's underpants for 'Man of Steel' (http://us.lrd.yahoo.com/_ylt=Aord2mDlROo5VjM__BF8Y424AOB_;_ylu=X3oDMTFpdjQ yY21qBG1pdANCbG9nIFBvc3QgQm9keQRwb3MDNARzZWMDTWVka WFCbG9nQm9keUFzc2VtYmx5;_ylg=X3oDMTMyZXVzMGI5BGlud GwDdXMEbGFuZwNlbi11cwRwc3RhaWQDZGMxMjk1YWUtNDZiNS0 zMDE3LThkNzQtOGRkYTYzM2IwMjQ5BHBzdGNhdANibG9nc3xtb 3ZpZXRhbGsEcHQDc3RvcnlwYWdl;_ylv=0/SIG=1190mluau/EXP=1355257337/**http%3A//yhoo.it/WWRVMI)]
This potential casting makes sense, from a certain point of view. Christopher Nolan wasn't shy about letting the world know that "The Dark Knight Rises" was the last Batman story he'd be telling, and his specific character arc on the Caped Crusader was clearly coming to a close with poster taglines such as "The Legend Ends." But the very last shot of the film features John "Robin" Blake (Gordon-Levitt) entering the Batcave, setting the stage for a new masked protector of Gotham City. Having Gordon-Levitt play Batman in "Justice League" spares Warner Bros. the daunting task of having to introduce a brand-new Dark Knight so hot on the heels of Nolan's trilogy... and helps to justify (a little, anyway) that fast-tracked 2015 release date.
However, from another angle, JGL playing Gotham's defender in "Justice League" is highly unlikely... if Warner Bros. cares about staying true to the world that Nolan created. Nolan's take on the Batman mythos was most distinctive for its ultra-realistic approach, giving us a Dark Knight who would look right at home standing next to a Coke machine or Chase bank. Nolan's Bruce Wayne -- and, now, John Blake -- are men of our world. It's not a world that could really host the existence of a flying alien in a red cape or a man who can run halfway around the world in a matter of seconds.
We'll have to see how this all plays out. For now, first thing's first -- Warner Bros. has to successfully reboot a franchise that has inexplicably confounded them for decades. Expectations are high for "Man of Steel"... especially now that there's a possibility for a bonus scene featuring the Bat-signal after the closing credits. Or something. Maybe.

Zack Snyder takes off Superman’s underwear in ‘Man of Steel’

By Bryan Enk | Movie Talk (http://movies.yahoo.com/blogs/movie-talk/) – 22 hours ago

http://l3.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/CQ6JmOjTVpTM3bNxJndSCg--/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7cT04NTt3PTYzMA--/http://media.zenfs.com/en-US/blogs/movietalk/11262012Superman-jpg_222004.jpgHenry Cavill as Superman in 'Man of Steel' (Photo: Warner Bros)
It's strange how a world obsessed with comic book movies can no longer accept a man in tights... or at least red briefs.
http://l1.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/fvbnfFdZC6SDjpjOq0VXMw--/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7cT04NTt3PTMwMA--/http://media.zenfs.com/en-US/blogs/movietalk/superman-300-jpg_165923.jpgHenry Cavill in costume on the set of 'Man of Steel' (Photo: Facebook)What Warner Bros. (and millions of fans) hope will be a Superman for the 21st century (following the lukewarm reception of Bryan Singer's well-intentioned but perhaps ultimately misguided 2006 would-be reboot, "Superman Returns") will be unveiled next summer, and with him a somewhat dramatic tweaking of that most dubious aesthetic challenge in bringing a superhero to the live-action screen: his costume.
Don't worry -- the "Man of Steel (http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/man-of-steel/)," played by Australian actor Henry Cavill, will still have the red cape and that awe-inspiring big capital "S" on his formidable chest. He'll even have a blue bodysuit and red boots. But what he won't have is the red briefs of previous big-screen Supermen played by Christopher Reeve and Brandon Routh.
"The costume was a big deal for me, and we played around for a long time," director Zack Snyder said in an interview with the New York Post (http://www.nypost.com/p/entertainment/movies/steel_this_movie_TrrZEczrOmIra5bDTnKk4O/0). "I tried like crazy to keep the red briefs on him. Everyone else said, 'You can't have the briefs on him.' I looked at probably 1,500 versions of the costumes with the briefs on."

[Related: Daniel Craig beat Superman & Perseus to win 'Casino Royale' Bond role (http://yhoo.it/U8cKjI)]
Snyder said the brief-less look was chosen to update Superman's outfit without completely throwing away what makes him iconic. He said, "If you look at the costume, it's very modern, but the relationship to the original costume is strong."
It's a radical variation on what's been the traditional Superman wardrobe, as the removal of the "red briefs" makes way for an all-blue unitard with a somewhat metallic, more armored look... which sets the stage for a superhero who's more of a brooding warrior than perhaps, say, a melancholy stalker of ex-lovers (an element that made for one of the many criticisms of "Superman Returns").
This approach is certainly in line with Warner Bros.' desire to turn the Last Son of Krypton into a more serious, introspective kind of hero -- and with producer Christopher Nolan's insistence on bringing a sense of realism (or, as original "Superman" director Richard Donner put it, "verisimilitude") to even the most outrageous concepts.
"There's a logic and concreteness that has to exist with Chris," Snyder said. "You can't just do stuff because it's cool. He demands that there be story and character behind all of it, which I'm a big fan of."

[Related: Indie Roundup: 'Silver Linings Playbook' (http://yhoo.it/QcWNKD)]
Indeed, if the impressive teaser trailer released this past summer is any indication, Snyder will be giving us a more introspective Superman, an alien coming to terms with his remarkable abilities and the responsibilities that come with them -- and how they ultimately might make him even more isolated from the very world he's sworn to defend.
"Man of Steel (http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/man-of-steel/)" opens June 14, 2013.

Life Of Pi Does Very Well In India

Wednesday 28th November 2012 10.00 IST

Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Life Of Pi has done very well in India especially from Monday onwards. The film opened well but was mainly due to the South Indian markets which recorded very good collections on day one but Monday saw the film hold up very strongly in Delhi/UP, East Punjab, Rajasthan, Bengal and CI. Many theatres across these areas had better collections on Monday than Friday. Some of these areas even managed overall better circuit figures on Monday than Friday. The film had the normal Monday drop in circuits like Mysore which had opened strongly on Friday.

The film will close the week with business in excess of 20 crore nett all over India and should go to around 30 crore nett plus for lifetime business despite the release of biggies like Talaash and Khiladi 786 over the next two weeks.

If DC/WB wants to do an Avengers with the Justice League, they need strong characters n story movies that precedes it..

though Hulk, Thor n IM2 weren't great movies, it helped in creating the much needed hype for Avengers.. and the utlimate movie did have the perfect story line..

WB should consider bringing on board Bale as Batman n Gordon as Robin in 2015 for the Justice League.. 3yrs off from the role and Bale returning as Batman should be enough to create the hype.. hoping Man of Steel will rejuvenate the Superman franchise and contribute to the Justice League..

above all, Nolan should still be around somewhere all this.. without him, Batman would be just another superhero character..

TIGERS OF TRIVANDRUM ZOO INSPIRED LIFE OF PI

Yann Martel, whose Booker Prize-winning novel on which the movie is based, had spent close to three months at the Trivandrum Zoo as part of his research for the book in 1996

Sanjith Sidhardhan

As Ang Lee’s ethereal visuals in Life of Pi leaves viewers around the world spellbound, little is known that Yann Martel’s Booker Prize-winning novel, on which the movie is based, has a Trivandrum connection.
Soon after his literary win in 2002, the French-Canadian author had mentioned that this novel evolved based on a series of conversations with the officials and zookeepers of the Trivandrum Zoo, where he had spent close to three months as part of his research in 1996.
During the time he worked out the story of a 16-year-old boy who finds himself adrift at sea with a Royal Bengal Tiger for 227 days, the Trivandrum Zoo had five such tigers — only one of which is now alive. The surviving tiger, Ravi, which incidentally is the name of the p ro t a g o - nist’s brother in the book, was moved to T r i ch u r Zoo in 2001.
WOULD A TIGER EVER LOVE MAN?
A resounding question from the book is, would tiger ever love man?
The zookeepers here have their own stories.
Muralidharan Nair, who has been the caretaker for the lions, leopards and tigers in the zoo for the last eight years, says, “When they continue to see you every day for a year, they identify and form a bond with you. With the tigers, they wouldn’t move an inch when there are visitors around, but as soon as they see their caretaker, they start sauntering around.”
Much like the movie, the zookeeper, who is also in charge of the lions and leopards, says, “The tigers are the most cautious amongst the lot. While the lions and leopards would let you touch them, the tigers always maintain a distance.”
The aggressive instinct is more evident when two males are left together in open enclosures, says Muralidharan.
“We always leave only one male out because they are territorial in nature, even if it is within a small area in an enclosure. The males start fighting amongst themselves. But you can leave as many females together as you want,” he explains.
NEW RECRUITS
Interestingly, all the tigers in the zoo currently belong to a single family, informs M u ra l i d h a ra n . “Karishma had given birth to three cubs and the other tigers that were brought here from other zoos were all from a single family,” he points out. Due to this reason, a zoo official says that they have stopped the inbreeding process since 2008 as the animals are more vulnerable to diseases. Now with the government’s initiative, the plan is to transfer a pair of tigers from Wayanad to the zoo to facilitate cross-breeding. Naming the tigers
While Richard Parker, the 400-pound tiger in Life of Pi was named after the hunter that caught him, the zoo’s felines are mostly named by the zookeepers and at times by the officials. Another senior zoo official says, “The names are mostly chosen by the zookeepers who start calling them from the time they are brought to the zoo or are born here. They start identifying the name and responding to it.”
However, this practice is all set to change today, when the Minister of Museum and Zoos, P K Jayalakshmi, will name the two leopard cubs that were born recently.
Interestingly, just like Martel’s book that speaks about identifying with all religions, the zookeepers here say that the naming of the wild cats never has had a religious undertone; rather it reflects secularity. “We have had tigers named Manikandan to leopards named Jabbar,” says a zookeeper.

Wanted to direct Bond, but they can’t afford me now!

Ace filmmaker Steven Spielberg reveals he was rejected to direct a Bond film

Fresh from saying no to the new Star Wars film, Steven Spielberg has shot down rumours that he’ll direct a Bond movie, but he has also revealed how he always wanted to do so before.
The Hollywood director said that he once offered his services to Bond producer Cubby Broccoli back in the early 70s, before he made his name with Jaws. “I went to Cubby Broccoli and I asked if I could do one and he said, ‘No.’ I’ve never asked again. Instead, I made the Indiana Jones series,” a paper quoted him as saying. The director had revealed his fascination with the Bond series earlier this year. “When I first started making movies, the only franchise I cared about and wanted to be part of was James Bond,” Spielberg had said.
“When I started out as a TV director, my pie-in-the-sky dream was to make a little movie that would get some notoriety, and then Cubby Broccoli would call me and ask me to direct the next James Bond picture. But I could never get Cubby Broccoli to hire me — and now, sadly, they can’t afford me,” he said.

Christopher Nolan talks future of Batman

Reasserts that his story is finished

Nov 29th 2012 By George Wales

http://cdn.mos.totalfilm.com/images/c/chris-nolan-talks-future-of-batman-122424-470-75.jpg
Despite the many times Christopher Nolan has spoken about The Dark Knight Rises (http://www.totalfilm.com/the-dark-knight-rises) in terms of concluding a trilogy, there are still fans hoping the director will change his mind and return for a fourth outing.

However, Nolan has been speaking about the future of Batman, and couldn’t have made it more clear that he regards his part of the story as complete.

“For me, The Dark Knight Rises is specifically and definitely the end of the Batman story as I wanted to tell it,” says Nolan. “The open-ended nature of the film is simply a very important thematic idea that we wanted to get into the movie, which is that Batman is a symbol. He can be anybody, and that was very important to us.

“Not every Batman fan will necessarily agree with that interpretation of the philosophy of the character, but for me it all comes back to the scene between Bruce Wayne and Alfred in the private jet in Batman Begins (http://www.totalfilm.com/batman-begins), where the only way that I could find to make a credible characterization of a guy transforming himself into Batman is if it was as a necessary symbol, and he saw himself as a catalyst for change.

“Therefore it was a temporary process, maybe a five-year plan that would be enforced for symbolically encouraging the good of Gotham to take back their city," he continued to explain. "To me, for that mission to succeed, it has to end, so this is the ending for me, and as I say, the open-ended elements are all to do with the thematic idea that Batman was not important as a man, he’s more than that. He’s a symbol, and the symbol lives on.”

Doesn’t sound like he’ll be directing Justice League (http://www.totalfilm.com/justice-league) then, does it? The Dark Knight Rises is released on DVD and Blu-ray on 3 December 2012

Django Unchained is the most fun you can have at the theaters this holiday season, assuming that you know you are going into a Tarantino film. It is funny, exciting, incredibly well-scripted, packed with memorable lines, and full of actors that are clearly having a lot of fun. It is definitely not a film for sensitive people, as the language and violence can be about as intense as you can imagine for a film that has Tarantino tackling the issue of slavery. It is also a long film, but with the way everything is established, I could honestly have stood being in this wild wild western world for much longer. It takes an accomplished master to be able to give you all that you want in an entertaining film and still leave you wanting more from it. Quentin Tarantino’s work on Django Unchained certainly helped it fall into that territory. As a result, the film climbs high into my list of favorite films of 2012.

Such an appoach won't work always. In batman series it worked very well mainly because batman/bruce wayne is a human. Every ability and limitation of humans are applicable to batman also .Anybody can become batman.

But that is not the case with superman and other superheros. They are defined as super human. They have to be dealt in that way. This intentional humanization of superman might not work well. Superman is unique unlike batman. There's only one superman. Else it would be very boring affair I suppose.

In the case of TDK, it got the status it has right now mainly because of Joker. Personally for me Joker is the hero of TDK and batman is just the good guy against Joker.

P.S :- I feel that the reboot of superman needs to be in a thoroughly entertaining manner especially if they are planning to do JL.

macha, no1 considers TDK to be an all time best film. but, it gave a new dimension to superhero films. like in a way nobody ever thought it could go. by intervening themes in present social context n menacing villains.
Nolan should be applauded for that. Theres Nolan's superhero trilogy n the rest. the explanation why Joker did all that is in the film itself, some people just like to watch the world burn. its the chaos theory explained in the film. and I bet living in the US, even yesterday I saw someone like that killing 20 innocent children.
Nolan didnt mean anyone can be a superhero. he said that just for the sake of it. and Lewitt;s character in it is not the next Batman. rightly said, Robin. the sidekick of Batman. and that added to the fun of it at the climax.

n yes, nobody else should follow this. look at Avengers. they still kept the comic book element n came out with an awesome film.

I am not pretty sure about this one. If there was no JL in planning, I suppose dark knight rises would have ended with a jump cut when they find out that autopilot system is fixed. There would have been no Robin to find out the batcave. I guess it's because Bale opted out from becoming batman again. The Studios badly needed a replacement for JL. The studio influence was evident in TDKR.

I really want Nolan to do a film without the backing of big studios. Before big studios landed on his door steps with handful of money, came the best films of his career. :|

disagree with it. Joker is the result of a chaos theory. and whats the point in saying without Joker the whole film is nothing. aren't every great movies like that? take the list of all time classics n every story might be moving forward by the backing of a terrific character. here, Joker was the catalyst.

ennittu, ee X-Men okke our cult status obtain cheytho? its not about attempting it, but being successful in it. Batman Begins was a film with average reviews then n less interest from the audience. TDK changed the whole perspective.

and with all these humongous expectations, TDRK still managed to stasify almost everyone. so imagine, if it weren;t for these expectations, TDKR would have been an even bigger film.

the film may not satisfy critics and hence the average reviews from them. its because, its a continuation to the LOTR series, in the same grand scale, only that its a prequel.
i loved it. the action sequences, breath taking visuals n majestic BG score. Jackson has made it more kids oriented than LOTR. i believe the next 2 parts will be more like the LOTR. there is substantial amount of humor as well.
different stories are told in this 3 hr journey. and, if you have followed the LOTR closely, lot of sub plots in LOTR makes sense, which are mentioned in The Hobbit.
and who complains about the length - who wanted it to end in the first place?

waiting for the next 2 parts. Middle Earth is still damn exciting as it was 10 years ago..

disagree with it.

TDK changed the whole perspective.

and with all these humongous expectations, TDRK still managed to stasify almost everyone. so imagine, if it weren;t for these expectations, TDKR would have been an even bigger film.

disagree.. imdb list vachu thanne thudangam...

TSR, godfather, pulp fiction... top 3 ennu ithu moonum aanu.. ithil oru character alla padangale munnootu kondupoyathu..

as a huge batman fan, i hated nolan bcoz he made him a second fiddle to joker.
i am not saying that u should portray batman as some run of the mill superhero; he should be dealt in a serious way..oru mathiri kallane pidikkan odikithachu varunna mandan policine pole..

TDKR is nowhere near the first two in terms of quality..Romantic bane and his girlfriend Talia.. :g2g:

uh? ithinum mathram enthu romance aanu Bane n Talia thammil? 2 or 3 scenes?

Godfather - though Vito Corleone is the central character, the novel or the film is the transformation of Michael Corleone. the whole movie series n novel is centered around it. everybody else contributed to the story line.
TSR - Andy is still the central character. Red was equally good. didn't they take the movie forward?

Agree with Pulp Fiction.

pinne, yes, the Joker n Bane are stronger than Batman. thats the whole point of it. look at every other superhero film. its just a weaker villain, whom the Superhero can bash around so that the kids in the movie theater can get so thrilled watching it.
and don't tell me the TDK series didn't have strong supporting cast. Commissioner Gordon, Alfred, Fox did their part well.
TDK also had a second hero in the form of Dent.

again, i am not saying its an all time best film. but easily, the best superhero film and I can't agree to the notion that without Joker the film is nothing.
and like i Said, with all that expectations, if TDKR could still manage a 80% + review on several critics meter n with the audience, then that movie is pretty damn good.

The Godfather is nothing without Vito, Sonny, Tom, Michael, Clemenza. It maybe the story of Michael's ascension; but everyone had an imp role to play in it. Michael's character did not not overshadow any of them or the movie/story itself.

TSR lum njan paranja pole thanne. The story does not revolve around Andy at all. Entire prison and its atmosphere, the man's suicide(hotel scene), Red's helplessness towards the end,the warden's suicide-all of it affects us in a huge way..

its just a weaker villain, whom the Superhero can bash around so that the kids in the movie theater can get so thrilled watching it.

From post 2000, name one. (don't say Hulk cuz Hulk smashes and that's what he does)

Yes, Wolverine was just tossing Magneto around like doll right? Please..A good supporting cast doesn't they were properly written. .Gordon and Fox had nothing much to do if you properly look at the whole trilogy. Different versions of Alfred they are.. And don't get me started on Nolan's female characters. .

The film-TDK depends a LOT on Joker bro. Nolan scripted the joker so well that he forgot about Batman. Romantic storyline was meh..That's Bruce Wayne's part down in the drain. Now what else does it have? Joker runs the show, beginning to the end. 'Twas good to see a kickass villain but we never got a proper hero. Where's the "whole point" in that?

I am not saying that its a bad movie, im just saying that its not a proper superhero movie at all. It can be a crime movie or a Joker movie as i would call it. But not a superhero movie as the hero has nothing much to do in it.

And..Joker and Bane are not bigger than Batman. They have a pretty complex relationship ;Anyone who have read the comics would know that.

Anyway we've taken this too far and too "serious"... I've had enough.. :thalakarakkam:

Mark Wahlberg to star in Transformers 4

American actor and producer Mark Wahlberg has confirmed he is going to star in Transformers 4. The 41-year-old has revealed that he decided to accept a part in the movie after developing a great working relationship with director Michael Bay on the set of their upcoming action comedy, Pain And Gain.
“Transformers came about because we had a great time working together. We kind of complemented each other throughout the entire process with what he does and what I do and what we were able to do together, and then, after that, I was like, ‘Dude, we gotta work together again’, and he was like, ‘Well, I got a project. You interested?’,” a website quoted Mark as saying.

Domestic Box Office Sets New Yearly Record in 2012

December 28, 2012

On Thursday, December 27, yearly domestic box office passed $10.6 billion, making it the highest-grossing year ever ahead of 2009 ($10.59 billion). With four more days left in 2012, it's likely that the box office ultimately ends the year with around $10.8 billion.

The top contributor was The Avengers (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=avengers11.htm) with $623.4 million, followed by The Dark Knight Rises (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=batman3.htm) with $448.1 million. The next two were a bit more surprising: The Hunger Games (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=hungergames.htm) wound up being a box office sensation with $408 million, while Skyfall (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=bond23.htm)'s $285 million and counting is over $115 million higher than any previous Bond movie. Rounding out the Top Five was The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=breakingdawn2.htm), which kept pace with its predecessors ($283.7 million and counting).

The Amazing Spider-Man (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=spiderman4.htm) performed solidly with $262 million, though that was noticeably off from the three Sam Raimi (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/people/chart/?id=samraimi.htm) Spider-Man (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/franchises/chart/?id=spiderman.htm) movies. Brave (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=bearandthebow.htm) was the highest-grossing animated movie of 2012 with $237.2 million, while Ted (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=ted.htm) was by-far the top comedy with an incredible $218.7 million. Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=madagascar3.htm) surprisingly outgrossed its predecessors with $216.4 million, while Dr. Seuss' The Lorax (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=lorax.htm) was also a major animated hit with $214 million.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=hobbit.htm) delivered a big assist in the final stretch of the year with $189.8 million through its first 14 days: it's just outside the Top 10 for now, though it should crack that list by the end of the weekend.

A full analysis of 2012 box office should be on its way late next week.

‘PLAYING DIANA IS THE HARDEST THING’

Naomi Watts opens up on her role as a tsunami-survivor in The Impossible and on playing real-life characters

M Suganth

What attracted you to the role of Dr Maria Belon in The Impossible? And, in what way is the role different from the other ‘damselin-distress’ roles you have played so far?
It was the pressure of getting it right and as exact or accurate as possible. Because, given the level of suffering that she went through and then, on top of that the responsibility of telling the story right for all those who lost loved ones or those who lost their lives, is a big responsibility. I wanted to get this right.
Did the fact that you are a mother yourself come in handy to find the right emotions?
In the movie, I play the role of a mother who was separated from her children during tsunami in 2004. Being a mother, I understand the pain and struggle that Maria went through. In fact, it helped me strengthen the connection with my own kids.
Did you meet the actual person you are playing or any other tsunami survivors when preparing for the role?
Yes, in fact, Maria has been in touch with me throughout the film. Originally, when I met Maria, I was incredibly nervous and I didn’t know where to begin. I felt like I’m just an actor and you have lived through this extraordinary horrendous thing, and I just don’t know where to start. I met the other survivors as well.
What are your memories of the tsunami? Do you remember what you were doing on that fateful day?
All those years back, when I was watching the news play out, as pulled in as I was, and affected by it, I don’t think I understood as much as I did now after the making of the movie.
The Western world was relatively less affected by the disaster. Do you think it will be a less painful watch for audiences in the West as compared to people here?
A huge portion of those people that died were tourists from the West. But yes, a lot of them were Asian and African as well. But this is not the case. The thing is, we couldn’t possibly fit all these characters in, and the film was really about the family and their experience of it.
Natural disasters have been used as a high concept premise in many disaster films like 2012. Do you think audiences will respond to The Impossible in a different way from how they respond to such films?
Earlier, I had my reservation for the film. But when I read the script and the approach Antonio has taken, I was sure I will do it. In fact, the film helped me understand it on a much broader scale and I am sure it will help others too in understanding it on a broader scale.
Given that director Juan Antonio Bayona’s background involves TV commercials and music videos (he debuted with the horror thriller The Orphanage), did you find a difference in the way he approached this painful subject?
When I heard that Juan Antonio is attached with the project, I thought he is a proper filmmaker. I have seen his fantastic work on The Orphanage. Clearly, if he’s invested, it must be something great. And I was right. Juan Antonio has taken the right approach. It felt rooted in truth, and, of course, it was, because it came very much from Maria’s and her family’s experience.
You are playing another real-life role — Princess Diana — in your next. Do you feel any pressure playing the iconic princess? What has been the most challenging aspect for you with regard to that role?
Playing Diana is the hardest thing I’ve done. It’s concentrating on the last couple years of her life. It centers on the love story between her and a Pakistani heart surgeon, which I didn’t know much about — in fact, nothing about.
You were also in talks to play another iconic person — Marilyn Monroe. Do you see any difference in you approaching a reallife role and a fictional role?
It’s always more challenging to play a real life character as it comes with a responsibility and pressure to take the right approach and get it right, which is not the case with a fictional role.

on pace to be Tarantino's biggest box office film ever - Yahoo! News (http://news.yahoo.com/django-unchained-pace-tarantinos-biggest-box-office-film-033102344.html)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - After nine days in theaters, "Django Unchained" is on pace to be Quentin Tarantino's highest grossing movie ever.
That's right, if the trend holds, the blood-soaked slave-revenge fable will rack up more at the box office than "Pulp Fiction" ($213.9 million worldwide), "Kill Bill Vol. 1" ($180.9 million worldwide), "Kill Bill Vol. 2" ($152.1 million worldwide) and previous record holder, "Inglourious Basterds" ($321.4 million worldwide).
Even though "Django Unchained" has only debuted stateside, with $82.4 million through January 2, it is outstripping all of the previous Tarantino movie mash-ups. At a similar point in its rollout, "Inglourious Basterds" had netted $67.6 million domestically, according to Box Office Mojo.
"It's the Quentin Tarantino brand," Phil Contrino, vice president and chief analyst with Boxoffice.com, told TheWrap. "People appreciate what he's doing. He makes these purely cinematic movies that allow even casual moviegoers to feel like they get to be a film snob and the great cast helps."
With a Cinemascore rating of A- (something of an imperfect arbiter of quality given that "Parental Guidance" has the same score) and a RottenTomatoes ranking of 89 percent "fresh," the film has been embraced by both audiences and critics, which bodes well for the proverbial "word of mouth" business.
"The exit polls are fantastic, the results have been outstanding and we're looking forward to a long run," Erik Lomis, head of theatrical distribution at The Weinstein Company, told TheWrap.
Not that "Django Unchained" has been immune to criticism. A fierce debate has erupted over Tarantino's proclivity for using a certain racial epithet that begins with "N," with directors like Spike Lee boycotting the film and decrying it for making light of slavery.
However, the red-hot controversy does not appear to have singed ticket sales.
And Fandango Chief Correspondent Dave Karger argues that the controversy may be helping the film. He notes that the plethora of opinion pieces on the subject as well as a viral video of star Samuel L. Jackson trying and failing to get an interviewer to use the racist term have kept "Django Unchained" in the public eye.
"This is the kind of movie that, as the best movies do, really inspires conversation and debate afterward and that only helps it," Karger said. "There are going to be people turned off by the use of the word, but they're going to just avoid the movie, and clearly it hasn't been a huge deterrent."
Indeed, as of 7 a.m. PT, "Django" was the number-one ticket seller on Fandango, ahead of other holiday hits like "Les Misérables" and "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey." It currently accounts for 21 percent of the ticketer's sales and, based on studio tracking, it should add another $18.5 million to its haul over the weekend.
That will likely push it over the $100 million mark after two weeks in theaters.
In contrast, it took "Inglourious Basterds" 23 days to hit a similar figure domestically. Moreover, by that point in its release schedule, "Inglourious Basterds" was never showing in less than 3,165 theaters whereas "Django Unchained" has never unspooled across more than 3,010 since it debuted, giving the Nazi drama a major per-screen advantage.
Starting on January 16, "Django Unchained" will find out if its film grindhouse humor translates abroad when it opens in France and Belgium and then rolls out across Russia, most of Europe and much of Latin America later that week. Sony will handle the international launch, while The Weinstein Company is overseeing the movie's domestic release.
Of course, highest grossing doesn't mean most successful. Adjusted for inflation, "Pulp Fiction," which amassed its $200 million-plus nearly 20 years ago, would be the top earner among the Tarantino oeuvre. Moreover, it still ranks as the director's most successful film having been produced for a meager $8 million.
Operating under the principle you have to spend money to make it, the Weinstein Company shelled out $87 million to produce "Django Unchained." Still if foreign audiences embrace the picture and the film picks up Oscar nominations, the studio will ride out of the holiday season with an awful lot of green-backs in its saddlebags.
