Back after Raavan, the most gigantically hyped flick of the year... History repeats again, another classic example of sky-hyped movies falling short of expectations...

Plot
Opens with the kidnapping of Ragini (Aishwarya) by the menacing demonic figure of Laal Maatti, Beera (Abhishek)... An honest and savage cop with some negative shades, Dev Prathap (Vikram) set on a mission to rescue his wife Raagini and to capture the most deadly criminal in the police records and a great man to the tribals around him, Beera...! In this journey a forest guard (Govinda) joins him in helping to reach Beera... As the narration unfolds, the reason for the deep vengeance towards Dev Pratap and the police force is revealed and in parallel Raagini sees the human side of Beera and Beera feels a soft-corner towards Raagini and vice versa... Will Dev Pratap rescue Raagini and capture Beera forms the rest of the story...

Story is definitely etched out from the epic "Raamayana", no two ways about it... Many of the roles exemplifies the characters from the epic... Like Abhishek as Raavan, Vikram as Lord Raama, Aishwarya as Seetha, Priyamani as Shoorpanaga, Govinda as Hanuman... There are even some instances which is directly inspired from epic, like Govinda meeting Aishwrya and many others...

Positive aspects of the movie
Technical crew of the movie absolutely rocks... Santhosh Sivan just flabbergasts us with his astounding cinematography which is nothing short of world-class standards...! AR Rahman mesmerizes yet again with soulful music and amazingly quivering BG score.... Song visualizations were really impressive as in every Mani Ratnam movies... Rich production values was really pleasing to the eyes.. Art Direction was outstanding.. Editing was OK... Mani Ratnam as the film-maker was brilliant and works big time...! The untiring and striving effort put up by this master to make this movie a reality is just unbelievable... Hats off to you sir...!

Coming to performances, Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachan steals the show as Raagini and Beera... Aishwarya portrayed the complexities and helplessness of Raagini to the fullest... Abhishek as the menacing at the same time eccentric Beera was really impressive... The amount of hardwork both of them devoted for this movie should be praised vociferously... Priyamani was excellent in that cameo role... Govinda was good... First half of the movie was racy...

Negative aspects of the movie
The main negative aspect of the movie is the lack of a proper story... Scripting was quite inconsistent... Mani Ratnam was obviously confused whether to make it a character study about the human side of Beera or the cat-and-mouse game between Beera & Dev...! The end result becomes a half balked attempt... The characterization of Dev played by Vikram was underdone with not much scope of performing for Vikram... Interval point was quite precipitous for me...

On The Whole
A half baked ambitious attempt saved to a high extent due to its direction, technical brilliance, music and towering performances from the lead...

Verdict
Ambitious...! Watch it for Santhosh Sivan, ARR, Aish, Abhi and the honest efforts put by Mani sir...!

Rating
7/10

Trade Verdict and Respone
May end up as a hit, if not, an average grosser... Public opinion is quite mixed...!

Raavan Has Dull Advance

Raavan has had a dull advance at the box office outside a few centres in the South where the advance is much better than the rest of the country. But as was seen with Raajneeti a few weeks back, the advance booking results are not as important as they were a few years back.

Raavan was not expected to do big business as the genre was not that audience friendly but the mega success of Raajneeti changed the expectations from the film as that film was also thought to be not audience friendly but scored heavily at the box office.

The current booking on Friday will decide if the film will go the Raajneeti way and open strongly after a dull response at the advance booking counters or will it have to rely on word of mouth for success.

Santhosh sivan I have to say is a big letdown as a cinematographer these days.
Think he is much better off as a director.
I loved how rajiv menon used the camera to show the growth of the character in guru.
Santhosh it seems to be only concerned about himself and his dept than the movie!

What is world class photography?
That which makes a viewer look at it beyond the movie?Thats poor cinematography for me.

Well, for a movie like this, where the story content is not tight enough, that helps a lot to get an impression among the viewers....

Which world class films has such cinematography?
The Dark Knight, Pan's Labyrinth (Spanish), Psycho to name a few...

All those movies had cinematography which enhanced the content,
I feel if guru was cinematographed by santhosh it wud have been a weaker movie, but having excllent cinematography!
Makes absolutely no sense!!

thanks bin...7/10 for this movie is too high i feel, remembering that u gave a 6.5 for kandasamy...hope u've been as generous this time around too:drunken:! oru honest attemptumilla sirnte kaiyyil ninnum, quite contrary to it, he cheated the actors, technicians, n the audience with a poor screenplay i say!
