==============================================

Ravan as everybody knew pretty early before the release is the story of 3 characters named Beera, Ragini and Dev. And it stays that way post release as well, with out any surprises.

Supposedly inspired from Ramayan, Ravan is the fight between Dev and Beera (and not necessarily between Good and Evil). There are enough reasons to see that Dev is not purely Ram and Beera is not purely Ravan.

The heinous crimes of Beera is justified as the revenge of police atrocities on his family, tha rape of his sister and her eventual suicide. And it is this flashback which generates a soft corner for Beera and his men in Ragini's mind.

Dev is assisted by Hemant and Sanjeevani Kumar (Govinda aka Hanuman?) in his pursuit of Ragini in the den of Beera.

The movie kicks of with impressive visuals and shots, but broken pieces of story telling. If it was a deliberate attempt to turn "buji" then it fails pretty badly, and one feels pretty uncomfortable in the flow of the narrative.

One can finally see Dev fighting to satisfy his personal EGO, and Beera to protect his honor and take the revenge for his losses. And as any LKG kid can predict it is the love he develops for Ragini in the process that forms the nucleus of the story.

Mani the Producer:
The Man of the Match for Ravan goes to his role as the producer of the flick.
If not for the huge canvas and extremely tough makings, Ravan could not have generated the buzz it did and would not have obtained even "watchable" ratings as a WOM

Mani the scriptwriter cum Director:
One can debate endlessly on who the hero of the movie is, Dev/Beera.
But the answer has to be unanimous if asked who the villain is: Manirathnam again.

I guess he got so carried away by the making/canvas, he forgot to give attention to the spine of a movie. Nothing innovative here,no surprises, no twists at the end. The narration is plain, overdone with symbolism and what not.

If Mani had to get Govind to jump from tree to tree in his intro scene, to make it clear which char of Ramayan he was referring to; then he has lost the plot clearly. The romantic scenes between Ragini and Dev was shocking by the standards he has set for himself.

Aishwarya Rai:

Purely for the physical strain this lady has taken :salute:
To me she was the only character that evoked some sort of feel in the minds of the audience. Her eyes spoke a lot, and the pain was visible.

Abhishek Bachan:
Only reason why anyone who watched either of the 2 versions would be to see how different Beera and Veera is.

Beera was stricly OK on average. Pretty Good in some, below par in certain others. But Abhishek does not dissapoint.

Vikram:
Perhaps the most under developed character. And Vikram could not do much on it to bring on a hair raising performance either. Mostly wooden and looking a degree less in confidence, Vikram disappointed as Dev.

Santhosh Sivan & V Manikandan:
Soul of the Movie!!!!
No more words to explain. It is unbelievable that the Malayatoor forests that i have seen N number of times can be shot this way too.

ARR:

Another pillar on which Ravan manages to hang around. Perhaps more than the songs, BGM is the one that played a better role here I would say.

In Short:

Sachin scores a century at Chepauk braving the back pain and India loses.
Sachin scores 175 at Hyd and India again loses....

Efforts do not quite get you the result.
Ravan is another eg on this theory.

Verdict:

Ravan is not a bad movie by any means, it is definitely watchable. But not for reasons that it was entirely supposed to be.

If only the Makers learn not to over hype the product :) :)

As for the subtitle: All of style and hype, with little substance.

Looking forward to catch the Tamil version soon..:beer::beer::beer::beer:
