Mani rathnam' s bi lingual extravaganza Raavan is just a treat for eyes. As i have already mentioned in my review of tamil version, the film is modern adaptation of classic raamayan, placing the character of Raavan as hero.
Mani rathnam has delivered the final product in an attractive package- ie, with good visuals, excellent music and BGM, great actors and technicians and afterall his master direction. But the one and only thing the film lacks is a solid story.
The story revolves around Beera (abhishek), who kidnaps the wife Ragini (aishwarya) of police superintentendant Dev Prathap (Vikram) as a revenge. But seeing her strong determination and fearless nature, he was unable to kill her. Slowly he develops a sof corner towards and her. The same thing happens to Ragini also. After knowing about the tragic death of Jamuniya (Beera's sister {priyamani}), ragini tries to see the goodness in Beera.
Dev, with the help of a forest guard (govinda) is in the forest to find the hide out of Beera and group... Will he succeeds in this mission? What satand will Ragini takes in the end? This is waht Raavan is discussing in the second half.....
performance:
Abishek Bachchan as Beera looks good. But, can't accept him as Raavan character after watching tamil version. Bcoz Vikram excels as Raavana in tamil and Junior bachchan is no way near him. Abhishek is ok with normal dialogues and scenes, but he fails desperately in expressing the mannerisms of Beera.
Aishwarya Rai is ok as ragini. Her eyes are more expressive than words in this movie.
Vikram as DeV is a great let down. In tamil version comparatively 'smaller' actor Pritviraj was almost ok with this character which doesnt demand much performance.
But a bigger star like Vikram was just wasted in this role.
Govinda as forest gaurd (resembling Hanuman's character in raamayana) was good compared Karthik in tamil version.
Priyamani was good in both versions (she used different costumes in both films to suit north and south tastes). Eventhough short, she was able to present it with punch the role demanded.
Negatives:
-don't have a solid story.
-unable to develop or explain the central character.
Comparing both version, I would like to place tamil version in first position, because of excellent performance by Vikram.
Totally, Raavan/Raavanan is just a visual treat. Must watch for viewers who don't bother about story, but who like to see films which are topnotch in technical brilliance.
rating (raavan)- 2.75/5
raavanan- 3/5
