The Conjugal Arrangement

Prologue

“I need you to read these documents carefully and then sign on the last page. You could have your lawyer take a look at them if you want her to”, the bespectacled woman spoke in businesslike manner. The man did not blink. He went straight to the last page and scribbled his initials on the space provided.”That’s rash”, the woman retorted.”I’ve lost much over the years. This is the only thing I’ve got .And I’m not gonna wait around reading legalese because you’re the only person who knows what I want and the only one who can help me reach my destination. Now, please if it’s not too much, can we fix a specific date”, he sighed.”No worries Sir, my men will get in touch with you. We’ll have you moved up the queue. It’s always a pleasure doing business with you”, she said as she gathered the files and walked out of the pristinely clean windowless white room.

He stared at the wall ahead, shut his eyes and breathed

Day 1

The rains in Goa are cruel in August. Each drop carries the fury of a wasp’s sting. The creepy crawlies stealthily leave their grassy homes and slowly trudge towards the nearest human habitation. The incessant buzzing of the houseflies adds to an already foul mood. But this rainy nightmare of a month also signals the start of a pleasant season. The 2 months before the early morning winter chill arrives. Chill that creeps into your bones and makes you pull your blanket even closer.

And it was in the month of August that Michelle and Ryan announced their wedding date. It would be an understatement to say that their elopement had created some amount of chaos. Pandemonium, I guess would have to be the appropriate word. There must be something in the waters of our country. A chemical perhaps .One that prevents people from accepting the fact that when 2 people love each other with all their heart, variables like religion and societal acceptance don’t matter. After the initial opposition to their elopement thawed, their parents were forced to give their blessings for their union. Maybe it was the fear that their newly found state of peace would abate soon that drove them to have a slapdash wedding. Rumors flew about all around. She was pregnant some said. The others were convinced that the whole wedding was a marriage of convenience between 2 families who had seen better times. But, the young lovers took it all in their stride. They were soon to be together. No longer would they have to sneak out into the dockyard to meet. No longer would they be scared to hold each other tightly without the fear of the innumerable prying eyes around them. No longer would anyone be able to tell them that they are not meant to be together

The congregation could not take their eyes off her as she walked down the aisle. It’s the makeup whispered, her jealous cousins to each other. But when she smiled showing a set of pearls that would put Aphrodite to shame, the hushed voices ceased completely. The hearts of the bridesmaids beat at a pace that would have bothered any qualified doctor , when he said his vows with such passion and devotion. It took them just 15 minutes to convince all those who had gathered in the church that this was a match that deserved to be made. A union that would withstand the boundaries of space and time

And as he lifted the veil and their lips met, it was as if time had stopped for them. They had no idea how long they kissed. But she moved back with a start as a bridesmaid, her friend Riana ,tugged at her gown. Embarassed, the newlyweds turned around to face their well wishers and were greeted with a deluge of beaming faces. They looked at each other with contentment in their eyes and moved out to mingle with the guests.
