The success of horror films depends mostly on whether it can generate the amount of fear we anticipated and making the story plausible, if not logical.

If measured on such a scale, the Malayalam film Winter -- written and directed by Dipu, and starring Jayaram -- falls somewhere in between. It is because the narrative is confused. It is not sure whether the director wishes to be a true horror film or a logical psychopathic tale where everything is explained, and the loose ends are tied in the climax.

Dr Ramdas (Jayaram) is working as a surgeon in a multi-speciality hospital in Hyderabad. He has a problem; one of his young daughters is depressed due to the claustrophobic environs of the apartment system. So on the advice of a psychiatrist played by Manoj K Jayan, he finds a specious bungalow on the outskirts of the city.

This marks the beginning of the things we are too familiar with happening in a horror film -- from an overflowing toilet to a missing kid to the gruesome killing of the pet. In between, there is effort to give scientific validity to Vastu Shastra.

There are a few genuinely scary moments but they fail to make a sustained impact. Then there is an overt effort to pacify the rationalist in the audience with lot of mumbo jumbo about psychopaths.

Every actor seems to be sleepwalking through his/her part. We can feel the lack of interest in every performance whether it be Jayaram or Bhavana (Jayaram's wife; wearing a sari and a huge dot on the forehead, that is one of the unintended shocker of this film).

The film has a jaded feel to it, maybe because it was languishing in the cans for the last couple of years.

</TD></TR><TR><TD vAlign=top align=left colSpan=2> </TD></TR><TR><TD class="verdana size12 black" vAlign=top align=left colSpan=2>Winter remained in the cans for some years and now after watching the film, we hope that it remained there forever! Well, cruel it may be, but that is the first thing that you feel as you come out of the theatres after watching this insipid drama.
It's meant to send a chill down your spine and obviously, that is exactly what you look forward to while going for a horror flick. But what lacks here is a credible storyline and justification for all those meaningless drama that is being shown on screen. The movie is full of gimmickry where you are shaken up by the background scores, falling vessels, irritating door bell and darkness. Fair enough, but at the end of it there should be a story and that is exactly where the movie fails to deliver.
Dr.Ramdas (Jayaram) is a surgeon, married to Shyama (Bhavana) and the couple has two young daughters. They decide to shift their residence after their elder kid develops some psychiatric problem. The new bungalow that they buy is a perfect one for a spooky tale, standing tall in a deserted village. The incidents that happen from then on are meant to sound and look scary to the hilt, but instead you find it contrived or artificial.
Winter looks decent enough at the beginning but soon after the story loses its grip. The narration seems to go on and on without an end, which makes it boring after a while. What one look forward to in a horror movie is an engrossing story that takes the viewer into a different world altogether, but such things are sorely missing here. The background score is nice in parts but often it sounds too boisterous without any logic. The visuals are okay but the music is nothing to rave about.
Jayaram has done a nice job, though there is nothing much to do for him other than to repeat what he has done in his earlier films. Bhavana looks visibly out of place as the mother of two kids and has just the same expression in her face most of the time. The rest of the cast including Manoj K Jayan and T G Ravi have nothing much to do. Vijeesh aka Noolunda has some comic acts to perform, but he seems to be in a hurry to complete his job, which makes it ineffective. Winter has some scary moments for sure, but we need more than that to be entertained at the theatre. To sit through this drab tale could be a scarier thing than the action on screen! The best option could be to grab a copy of some classic horror flicks from yesteryears and holler in the darkness of your drawing room. Verdict: Avoid

Winter Movie Review IndiaGlitz [Monday, July 20, 2009]
http://i.indiaglitz.com/common/none.gifhttp://i.indiaglitz.com/malayalam/reviews/winter200709_1.jpg
Winter was originally planned as the debut movie of its director Deepu karunakaran. But as you call it the good fate, this came late after his Dileep movie '"Crazy Gopalan '' which was a hit with the masses. Any how, this offering in this rainy season ''an intended horror movie also showcases the sparkles of his creativity as a director, even though in a lame regular story of the ''haunted house.
The movie which was shot a couple of years ago has Jayaram as Dr.Ramdas a surgeon in a super specialty hospital at AndraPradesh. He lives a quiet but busy life with his wife Shyama (Bhavana) and two small daughters. As their eldest daughter finds its hard to cope up with the life in town, the decide to shift to a new bungalow, a perfect big setting for the genre, in a deserted village, with large interiors and beautiful exteriors. The incidents that follow from the day one ,puts the couple in a fix which leads them to a Vasthu theorist. He gives scientific explanations to all the happenings and does the deeds to clear off the problems. But the couple hardly realises that there are more ominous forces at work which are giving them sleepless scary nights .
Deepu has made a good research upon the horror flicks of RGV and John Carpenter and has recreated the techniques and effective gimmicks that can leave a chill down your spine , in the every second minute. And there are plenty of unexpected screaming door bells, terrifying background scores by Benny and plenty of darker ,barely lit sequences. And the movie is indeed impressive in the first hour where you smell a real story behind the happenings . But it is here the flick falter, with hardly any credible storyline to narrate and justifications to at least something on screen.
Apart from the decent visuals from JayaKrishnan Gummudy slickly edited by Arunkumar , the big highlight of the movie is its soundtrack designed by Harikumar and Rajakrishnan ably supported by Benny in the BG scores. This seems to be the first movie in Malayalam which had prepared a proper sound scheme even before shooting and it shows its brilliance and often gives a feel of overly done sound effects , mismatching the relatively average visual experience. The only song in the movie by debutante Rajakrishnan is average.
Jayaram makes a cake walk through the entire proceedings while expressions of Bhavana and her poor dubbing, doesn't comes up to the mark. Manoj K Jayan and T G Ravi are in their regular roles.
Had Deepu ,who is also the scriptwriter of the movie , given a little more importance to built up a better refreshing thread and proper reasoning for the loopholes in the plot , Winter'' would have been one of the good horror thrillers of Malayalam. Anyhow, not a total letdown , the movie is advisable in parts, but strictly , for the lovers of the genre.
