My Name Is Khan In Huge Demand Overseas
Tuesday 9th February 2010 09.00 IST
Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

My Name Is Khan may well create a stampede at the box office in International markets going by the demand for prints across all International markets.

The film is looking to release on over 550 prints. My Name Is Khan is looking at a 200 print release in North America and also a humungous 200 plus prints in Europe. Normally Europe has around 75 prints for a big release with 50 going to United Kingdom and around 25 for rest of Europe.

My Name Is Khan due to the craze of Shahrukh Khan in Europe will have 100 prints in United Kingdom alone and over 100 in the rest of Europe. The film is in huge demand in Germany and Poland.

The gulf region is expected to see a 50 print release while Australia is around 30 prints. My Name Is Khan has the potential to become the first film to cross the 100 crore mark from international markets if it lives up to the enormous hype it has created in Overseas markets.

The Orissa unit of the Bajrang Dal Tuesday threatened to disrupt the screening of Shah Rukh Khan's movie My Name Is Khan across the state if the actor does not apologise for his alleged "pro-Pakistan" statement.
"We will not allow the screening of the film in the state," said Subash Chouhan, national co-convenor of the Bajrang Dal.
The much-awaited film, which is slated for a global release February 12, is already facing threat from the Shiv Sena in Mumbai. Sena activists Tuesday attacked some theatres in the city where the film is to be screened.
"Shah Rukh has behaved like an agent of Pakistan by advocating the cause of Pakistani cricketers participating in the Indian Premier League," Chouhan said. A senior state police official, however, said anybody attempting to disrupt the film's screening would be dealt with as per the law.

MUMBAI: Multiplexes on Wednesday reopened advance booking for the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer My Name Is Khan, a day after suspending it, following
the state government’s assurance that it will provide adequate security to cinema theatres in Mumbai.

“Advance booking of My Name Is Khan has started again after police intervened in the matter and ensured tight security to all theatres,” minister of state for home Ramesh Bagwe claimed on Wednesday evening. As part of preventive measures, the Mumbai police have so far rounded up 1,600 Sena activists.

However, the film’s fate hangs in balance, as the Congress and the Shiv Sena continue to flex muscles over its release. The war of words between Congress and the Sena continued after chief minister Ashok Chavan on Tuesday threatened to remove the security cover provided to Sena leader Uddhav Thackeray, if he takes the law into his own hands. The Sena executive president, in turn, mocked the Congress-led government, saying it was interested only in providing security to Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Kasab.

Mr Thackeray also said that he did not need any government security. “I don’t need his security. My party MLAs will also return their security. Let the men guard Kasab as he seems dearer to government instead of those who express their love for the country,” Uddhav said.

All Sena MPs on Wednesday also decided to surrender their security cover in protest against Mr Chavan’s threat. “We have already returned the security cover since Wednesday morning,” party leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut told mediapersons. He said the party has sent letters to Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar and Rajya Sabha chairman Hamid Ansari in this regard.

Raising the rhetoric after the crackdown by the state in which thousands of Shiv Sainiks were arrested following their violent protests against the SRK film, Mr Raut warned: “Wait and see what happens on Friday despite huge security.” MNIK is due to be released on February 12.

In New Delhi, Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi sent out a strong message to the Sena, saying their protests over the release of the film would be dealt with a “very firm hand”. Mr Chavan, too, had earlier expressed similar feelings. “We are not going to tolerate the Sena’s bullying tactics,” he said.

The excellent news is that there were a number of caucasian people at the viewing, which really surprised me. Afterwards I spoke to one of them and she said her grandson suffered from Asperger's and that's why she went to view the film. She loved it and said that she would be taking her daughter to it and letting all her friends know what a wonderful film MNIK was. I was thrilled to say the least.

Review: My Name is Khan doesn't cut it

A few golden moments aside, 'My Name is Khan' is far-fetched and juvenile

Abu Dhabi: Their intentions were noble as Bollywood’s flop-proof trinity comprising actors Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and director Karan Johar attempted to drill in the ideology “My Name Is Khan – And I am not a terrorist” in their latest love story.
But noble intentions have rarely scored any brownie points in Bollywood and MNIK was no different. The tale of an autistic Muslim, Rizwan Khan, who finds his marital harmony shattered after the deadly 9/11 terror attacks in America and who embarks on a journey to meet the American president comes off as a juvenile jingoistic venture.
The film may be about racial and religious identity in post 9/11 America but the viewer is left to grapple with another big question: why did Karan Johar – the King of chirpy musicals and the hit-maker behind utopian romances Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham – depart from his forte?
Another disappointment came when you realised that in between all the intense filmmaking, Johar forgot to draw from his biggest strength – the combustible chemistry between Khan and Kajol. Though Khan and Kajol were convincing as a couple who break-up after their son falls victims to religious and racial attacks, we are left wanting for more.
Agreed they had their golden moments – such as Kajol’s marriage proposal and their teary reunion – but the film left you terrifyingly numb. Your eyebrows may shoot up north when the love story meanders towards Khan meeting the American president. (warning: if Barack Obama were to see this – he will be cringing at seeing his on-screen persona). As far as performances go, Kajol as the zestful Mandira was believable and Khan’s performance was earnest.
P.S.: Karan Johar – stick to candy-floss romances – that’s our message.

'MNIK': Compelling mirror of troubled times (IANS Film Review; Rating ***1/2)

2010-02-11 18:40:00

: 'My Name Is Khan'; Director: Karan Johan: Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Jimmy Shergill, Zarina Wahab
Questions of religious and national identity, of the sense of right and wrong, of combating a certain isolation that comes with a behavioural disorder. But what triumphs over all the complexities unfolding in a tumultuous post 9/11 America is Rizwan Khan and his essential goodness that tells you unwaveringly - his name is Khan and he is not a terrorist.

Director Karan Johar is in unfamiliar territory here. No candyfloss romance, no sweet nothings, nobody breaking into song. Just the super intelligent Rizwan, who has Asperger's Syndrome, a form of autism, his halting voice with his inability to communicate, and his many relationships - with his mother, his brother, and yes, Mandira, and her son Sam.

Move over Rahul, Rizwan is here. Shah Rukh makes the transition from the eternal romantic to the intense Rizwan who finds love and loses it some years later when his Khan identity becomes all important in a tense, suspicious America. You sit through three hours waiting to get a glimpse of Shah Rukh through Rizwan Khan, but it doesn't happen.

If Shah Rukh lives and breathes Rizwan in what is one of his finest roles, Kajol as Mandira, the vivacious single mother, is also good - as always. The chemistry between them if not always crackling, then heartwarming.

It's an unlikely romance, not very easy to portray. But it's dealt with a light touch. There they are sitting on either side of the bed after their wedding with Mandira telling Rizwan, who doesn't like to be hugged, that this is something they can't do without touching. It's a scene that could quite easily have gone wrong, but it doesn't.

All credit to Karan Johar for that.

Like a piece of music that gradually rises to grand crescendo, 'My Name Is Khan' begins with Rizwan as a child with his mother - so good to see Zarina Wahab after such a long time - in a tenement in Mumbai and ends with cheers from the US' first African American president in a crowded rally.

It's from his mother that Rizwan learns his first lessons of humanity; as the 1983 Mumbai riots rage outside, she tells the young boy that the world is divided into good people and bad people.

It is this essential humanism that carries Rizwan through from Mumbai to San Francisco where his brother stays, then to the suburb of Banville where he moves in with Mandira and Sam, and even when he is taken to be a terror suspect.

Sam, his 'only best friend', is subjected to a vicious race attack because he takes on Rizwan's surname. Mandira hits back, saying that the worst thing she could have done was marry a Khan and Rizwan is out on the roads - unable to articulate his feelings but backpacking his way across the US to meet 'president sahib' so he can tell him: 'My name is Khan and I am not a terrorist.'

It is a road journey through a troubled post 9/11 America towards humanism and the essential goodness of the human spirit.

This is a US where chanting the name of Allah gets you into trouble, where the word terrorist and Khan in conjunction can put you behind bars. Rizwan moves from being a terror suspect to a nationwide hero who exposes a terror mastermind. And then, the man with the mission who travels to Wilhelmina that is literally drowning in a hurricane to supervise a heroic rescue mission.

There's Afghanistan and Iraq, Bush and Obama too. The US' first African American president is voted in and, in that final feel good moment Rizwan meets him in front of thousands of people and his goodness is validated.

Plenty of great one liners. When he is refused entry into a presidential fundraiser for the poor in Africa that is only for Christians, he leaves behind $500 saying: 'This if for those who are not Christians in Africa.'

The music by Shankar Ehsaan Loy is superb. This is not a film without flaws, it is at least 20 minutes too long for one and flags in the pre-interval period, but here is one straight from the heart. It has a message, in these days of tensions over language and religion, one which needs to be heard.

Go watch. http://im.sify.com/news/images/images2008/spacer.gif

SRK, Kajol ace in MNIK

How's the chicken?' asks the hostess.

'It's not very good,' says Rizvan Khan truthfully. There's laughter, because the answer is truthful, yet innocent of malice -- Rizvan, the Asperger's Syndrome-afflicted protagonist of Karan Johar's [ Images ] My Name Is Khan is incapable of lies or malice -- and a tense situation is defused.

This is also what the movie is about -- a tale about a man who is 'different' and how the lives of those around him are affected because of his 'difference.'

Those of you who have seen the trailers, and most of you haven't, will know this is a love story between Shah Rukh Khan [ Images ] (Rizvan) and Kajol [ Images ] (Mandira), that the destruction of New York's Twin Towers impacts their relationship and that Rizvan has an overpowering need to meet and tell the president of the United States that his name is Khan and he is not a terrorist.

That, essentially, is the 'plot' of the film, and I won't tell you more, because you might otherwise feel like posting some not-very-complimentary messages to me on the message board below. http://www.planetsrk.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif

But here's what I will tell you.

My Name Is Khan is a true Bollywood product -- it makes you laugh, it makes you cry, it even makes you shake your head at the occasional 'Bollywood' touches director Karan Johar just can't seem to resist (he could have, for example, avoided the pre-interval pan shot to the Koran; the message would have come through just as effectively).

It takes you though parts of America that Bollywood has not explored before -- Georgia, for instance, gets quite a bit of footage -- and uses American characters not showcased by mainstream Bollywood earlier -- Mamma Jenny and funny hair Joel, take a bow.

A scene from My Name is KhanThe film, like all Karan Johar products, is beautifully cinematographed (director of photography Ravi K Chandran). The difference this time is it is not the typically bright coloured, candy floss flavours that permeates Karan's films.

If there is one quibble, it would be the fact that Karan Johar could have made effective use of the talented bunch of actors who make cameo appearances.

Good actors, even in cameo roles, make an impact -- as we have seen in many films recently. In My Name Is Khan, they are unfortunately wasted. Anyone, for example, could have played the roles Vinay Pathak [ Images ] or Sumeet Raghavan did. Praveen Dabas, in fact, was miscast -- Sumeet Raghavan would have been much more effective in the same role.

The lead pair, however, is clearly well-cast; Shah Rukh and Kajol share a superb chemistry that highlights all their films, and is an important part of My Name Is Khan.

There are three films in which I have really liked Shah Rukh Khan (yes, I do like him otherwise too, SRKisms and all, because he can make you smile) -- Saathiya [ Images ], Swades [ Images ] and Chak De! India [ Images ]. To that, I'd add My Name Is Khan.

I've never met anyone afflicted with Asperger's Syndrome, so I can't say with certainty that Shah Rukh has portrayed the condition correctly. But he is believable and makes you like and feel sympathy for Rizvan at the right moments. It's the first time in the star's 18-year-long career (his first film was Deewana in 1992) that he has essayed such a character. He's not the chocolate hero, he's not beating up the bad guys, he's not trying to look good or entertain you as Shah Rukh Khan. And it works!

Kajol is, as usual, superb. Mandira's laughter, her determination, her joie de vivre, her grief, her anger -- Kajol brings it all to life. And, if I may say so, Kajol, no one runs up a hill dressed in a night suit, wearing floppy slippers, with no make-up on, as well as you do.

A scene from My Name is KhanOthers, too, do well -- Sonya Jehan is very beautiful and portrays her part with great sympathy and, hopefully, we will get to see more of this talented actress.

Tanay Chheda (Taare Zameen Par [ Images ], Slumdog Millionaire [ Images ]) is clearly very talented and does an excellent job as the young Rizvan.

Arjan Aulja, you were excellent. I wish I could talk more about what you did, but it would give the plot away.

Let's end this review with the climax -- it's a tad filmi, and there were some bits that I thought were a slight stretch of the imagination. But hey, this is a Karan Johar film and everyone likes a happy ending!

Savera R Someshwar in Mumbai

Story: Rizwan Khan, afflicted with Asperger's Syndrome, sets out on a historic journey to meet the US President, when his world takes a somersault after 9/11. His wife, Mandira, meanwhile tries to cope with her grief and come to terms with the new racially-divided reality.

Movie Review: Ok, let's get this straight from the very beginning. It's Khan, from the epiglotis (read deep, inner recesses), not `kaan' from the any-which-way, upper surface. In other words, it's the K-factor -- Karan (Johar) and Khan (Shah Rukh) -- like you've never seen, sampled and savoured before. My Name is Khan is indubitably one of the most meaningful and moving films to be rolled out from the Bollywood mills in recent times. It completely reinvents both the actor and the film maker and creates a new bench mark for the duo who has given India some of the crunchiest popcorn flicks. This time round, it's a whole new mantra for the two moguls and the Indian movie industry per se which might henceforth go something like: My name is Bollywood and I'm not just an entertainer. I have a whole lot to say and I'll say it in style....

The high point of the film are its performances. Shah Rukh Khan's Rizwan Khan and Kajol's Mandira cannot easily be forgotten and you end up carrying them out of the audi with you. As is Zarina Wahab's Ammi who articulates an almost perfect prototype of the perfect Indian as Shah Rukh Khan's mom: completely rooted in her culture and yet, completely secular. Add to this the film maker's eye for detail which not only sweeps across contemporary history, but also creates startling vignettes with scenes that question, challenge, debate and debunk established myths, and you have a cinema that inspires, moves, motivates and forces you to think. All this, even as it entertains. For, nowhere does the film get heavy or pedantic, despite taking on the arduous task of telling you, in plain terms, that tolerance is the indispensable virtue for the 21st century which can have no place for fundoos, regionalists, communalists, casteists, gender, class and cultural chauvinists. Let them all rest in peace while the rest of the world moves forward.

But more than everything, it is the searing simplicity of Karan Johar's narration that scintillates. Choosing a protagonist who suffers from Asperger's Syndrome seems to be a deliberate move on the part of the film maker and it works like a master stroke. One of the most seminal scenes in the film entails a young Shah Rukh (Tanay Chheda) turning back from his balcony, spewing the hate-filled abuses he's just heard in the streets below which are getting violent and bloodied with an ongoing communal riot. His mother takes him in, draws a match stick figure with a stick and another with a lollypop and asks the young Rizwan to pick out who's the Hindu and who's the Muslim from the picture. Can't tell...both are the same...the stick man is bad, the lollypop man is good...mutters Rizzu. And that remains the most important lesson of his life which a mumbling, fumbling, awkward, socially inept hero carries like a golden talisman through his monumental life. One which simply says: the world is divided into good men and bad men. Period. No other differences matter. Isn't that a lesson we'd like everyone to learn. And if it means getting back to the basics, to mum's bedside tutorials, so be it.

My Name is Khan unfolds essentially as a love story. Rizwan, the boy-with-a-difference, grows up with his mother and younger brother in the back alleys of Mumbai. He is forced to join his brother (Jimmy Shergill, rightfully jealous with all the attention his elder sibling gets) in the US and sell his beauty products as part of the family business. On one such business meet, he meets up with the spirited hair dresser, Mandira who happens to be a single mom too.

Needless to say, he wants to move in with Mandira and her 13-year-old son, Sam, urging her to marry him and convincing her he won't take too much place because he's thin and undemanding. Cute! The entire love story proceeds like a dream: full of beans and beauty and before you know, it's tragedy time. The world discovers a new dateline -- 9/11 -- and hurtles towards divide and doom. Rizwan and his family are forced to bear the brunt of racial prejudice in an intensely personal way that brings down their citadel. Time for the handyman who "can repair anything" to move out on an impossible journey that hopes to end with setting the world right. All this, while wife Mandira devilishly battles her own demons and society fights its own ills.

The film takes on an expansive canvas: 9/11, post 9/11, racial abuse, draconian homeland security laws, a hysterical US jurisprudence, hurricane Katrina....Yet, it rarely loses focus -- just here and there, post-interval -- and remains primarily the story of a good man who wants to live in a good world with good people around him. The film is brimming over with scenes that relentlessly move you to tears, not because they are sad, but because they are uplifting, inspirational and just sometimes heart-rending. Performance-wise, this undoubtedly towers as Shah Rukh's best act. He never once loses grip on his character, despite the mannerisms, the awkward body language and the distinct speech style. Definitely, this one's a few miles ahead of even Tom Hank's Forrest Gump. Kajol's Mandira is a complete winner, with the actor pitching in such a restrained act in one of the most difficult scenes of the film, she simply blows you away. Zarina Wahab is unforgettable in a cameo and the kids are super. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's music score is apt, while Ravi Chandran's camera captures San Francisco like never before. But eventually it's Rizwan Khan who walks out with you, branding all the fundamentalists as `Liars' and telling all those who doubt his integrity: My Name is Khan and I am not a terrorist, a non-Mumbaikar, or an unpatriotic Indian.

A word about

Performances: Shah Rukh is stupendous, Kajol mesmerising, Zarina Wahab moving and the kids -- Tanay and Yuvaan -- are brilliant. Not once does Shah Rukh lose his grip on the distinct character who has a distinct body language and a completely unchartered emotional graph.

Direction: Karan Johar comes of age. He tells a complex story with sparkling simplicity, without forgetting that cinema is primarily meant to entertain.

Story: Karan Johar and Shibani Batijha's script is expansive, covering several events that have made headlines in the recent past. Yet, it essentially remains a moving love story that moves you no end.

Dialogue: Niranjan Iyengar and Shibani Bathija have demystfied contemporary strife with polish, restraint and research.

Music: Shankar-Ehsan-Loy's audio track is brimming over with soulful, uplifting tracks like Noor-e-Khuda.

Cinematography: Ravi K Chandran creates a dreamy San Fransisco on canvas even as his Mumbai remains so real, so downtown, so back-alleyed.

Styling: Manish Malhotra and Shiraz Siddiqui go cosmo and chic with Kajol and nerdish with SRK. Perfectly apt.

SRK rocks, Kajol ditto
Khalid mohamed

Your heart goes out to him. Hungry as hell, he accepts a roti roll from strangers in a bus cutting through the nightscape of America. He wolfs one down, shoving the other one poker-faced in his pocket. A perfect awwww-moment.

Indeed such vignettes are the most appealing aspect of the much-beleaguered My Name is Khan. Take, too, the man’s monologue on the unbearable pain of losing a loved one. Clearly, here’s the film’s finest moment which moistens your eyes. As they do again when the vulnerable Khan is lashed by rain on a lonely highway. Or as he walks on a red-brick-walled street jejunely, striving to control his body language. And there’s that tearing sequence when he mutters-stutters in an ice-cold hospital corridor on confronting tragedy.

Karan Johar’s plea for global secularism,in the wake of the 9/11 devastation ,brims over with quite a few emotionally stirring punctuation marks. The entire text, alas, is neither convincing nor insightful. Like it or not, the subject required at least a patina of gritty realism and an experiential howl of protest. Instead, the result is more gloss than solid substance.

Huh huh huh…Fatally, the concluding reels fly off into la-la land, upgrading the little man grappling with insurmountable Kryptonite odds into a Super-duperman. Nuh, nuh, nuh.

Blame the glaring unevenness, essentially, to the screenplay, which believe it or not has shades of the Raj Kapoor-produced Ab Dilli Door Nahin (1957), in which wronged kids sought the attention of Pandit Nehru. Plus, Khan, afflicted by autism (Asperger’s syndrome, it is specified), has elements of Forrest Gump, and the nervy habit of rolling pebbles in a hand – a throwback to Humphrey Bogart’s shifty act in Caine Mutiny. A coincidental quirk, perhaps, but it’s there. Bogey Wogey?

Honestly, of all Johar’s scripts, this one takes far too many potshots in the dark. (Incidentally, the solo credit for the writing goes to Shibani Bhatija, thank you very much). Devoid of truly dramatic conflict, the written material is lean on ideas, culminating in a finale that’s a mega-mess. Spoiler alert? Wait, wait, wait. Suffice it to say there’s a mega-hurricane to handle, a marooned group of black souls filmed in the shadows and occasional close-ups, followed by bonhomie shared with…you don’t want to know. Oh.

So, why the four stars above? Purely for two outstanding performances which assert that even if the two artistes were to read out telephone directories, they would still command your undivided attention, besides giving you a serious case of the goose bumps. Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol – bring them together – and any filmmaker’s job is already accomplished. Their gift for raising ordinary material to the extraordinary is sheer delight. Here are ageless dilwales whose chemistry, physics, algebra –call it what you will – is as intoxicating as the world’s finest champagne. Cheers!

Proof: the after-wedding scene when both are on bed, waiting for the other to make the first move. When he does, it’s awwww-some. In fact, the film’s first-half hinging on their romance is sheer delight, besides catching Johar at what he is more proficient at: charm, tongue-in-chic humour and cashmere warmth. Full marks to Johar for that.

Now, how you wish the director would consolidate his skills in this area of human behavour. Sorry, but he is a goldfish in a bowl, blowing bubbles, when it comes to swimming through societal and political currents. Awareness has to be innate, not narrated second-or-third-hand. Kabhi Islamic Issues Na Kehna.. just check out Garm Hawa to get clued into realpolitik. Please, please, please.

The plot, jagged and jejune, deals of course with Gump (Shah Rukh Khan) and his child-like love for a single mother (Kajol) and her knee-high son. Just sample that moment when he stops her from eating calorie-packed chocolates. Next: trouble in paradise. She accuses his faith for a tragic loss. Ergo, he must make a symbolic trip – up and way from home – for redemption. In this act, he remains true to his self, weaknesses intact, a loser, who must do right, to regain perhaps the only person he has ever loved. Follow encounters with fundamentalists, piggish cops, and assorted travellers.

Throughout, Ravi C Chandran’s cinematography is cool and collected, except when the visuals dip into Hollywood-style special effects. Ehsan-Shankar-Loy’s music score needed far more fervour, and the lyrics far more maturity (Tere naina is as shallow as they come). The dialogue aims to be punchy but is frequently strictly marshmallow. Mush ado.

Never mind. At the end of 18 reels, you do carry something precious home – SRK and Kajol. They are absolutely electric. Undoubtely, they don’t make’em like that anymore. And never will, which is why MNIK is absolutely compulsory viewing. You may have problems with it. Yet it is a must-must-see.

PS: Am an unabashed SRK fan…and supremely proud of it. No one else compares to him today…

PS:The film’s release has been stopped in certain states for politically partisan reasons. Support it, NOW

My Name is Khan is a film made with sincerity and sweat, ambition and conviction. It grapples with the most urgent and fraught issue facing humanity: religion. It features a striking performance by Shah Rukh Khan.

It has some scenes, especially one involving a child’s death that will bruise you. Yet despite all this, My Name is Khan never becomes the empowering, inspiring Forest Gump-like epic. Mainly because the connective tissue tying it together is deeply flawed and in places, embarrassingly naive.

Khan is the story of Rizwan Khan, played by Shah Rukh, who has Asperger’s syndrome. This milder form of autism impairs Rizwan’s social communication skills and gives him some decidedly odd behavior patterns – he can’t stand loud sounds or the colour yellow.

He rotates stones (http://movies.ndtv.com/movie_Review.aspx?id=479&showid=506#) obsessively and can barely bring himself to hug someone. Rizwan is far from crazy but he definitely moves to the beat of a different drummer. Despite this he finds love (http://movies.ndtv.com/movie_Review.aspx?id=479&showid=506#) and a family with Mandira, played by Kajol.

But post 9/11, their happy home (http://movies.ndtv.com/movie_Review.aspx?id=479&showid=506#) falls apart and Rizwan embarks on a grand odyssey across America so that he can tell the American president that his name is Khan but he is not a terrorist.

My Name is Khan is on firm footing as long as director Karan Johar stays with emotional drama. He opens the film skillfully with airport security (http://movies.ndtv.com/movie_Review.aspx?id=479&showid=506#) searching Rizwan and then moves into flashback.

The scenes of Rizwan’s childhood are some of the strongest in the film. Zarina Wahab returns after years to give a lovely, nuanced performance as Rizwan’s mother. But the film’s delicate rhythm wobbles when we shift to San Francisco and into love story mode.

The first shaky sign is the entry of Navneet Nishan who seems like she has stepped in from some other, louder film.

The romance between Rizwan and Mandira is too designed and mawkish.

Kajol, struggling with a thin character, mostly veers between being hyper and cute.

Still, Karan, working with an ace technical team including cinematographer Ravi K Chandran and editor Deepa Bhatia, crafts some beautiful images and poignant sequences but the film loses balance irreparably as it moves into political mode.

The second half scrambles madly both literally and figuratively. Rizwan, obviously superman in another life, manages to shout down a hate-mongering Muslim doctorhttp://kona.kontera.com/javascript/lib/imgs/grey_loader.gif
(http://movies.ndtv.com/movie_Review.aspx?id=479&showid=506#), have him arrested by the FBI, get arrested himself and in a ridiculous pre-climactic sequence, save the citizens of a small town when floods hit New Orleans.

Writer Shibani Bhatija squeezes in so much that by the end of two hours and forty minutes, even if Rizwan isn’t exhausted, you are.

Rizwan is undeniably the best thing about My Name is Khan. Shah Rukh’s performance has little subtlety about it – for that watch Hugh Dancy doing Asperger’s in Adam – but it is heartfelt, endearing and more controlled than anything he’s ever done before. Watch him in a lovely scene in which Kajol accepts his proposal or how he restrains his tears so that his eyes brim but never well over.

I recommend that you see Khan for him. The film itself is too uneven to give us the emotional high we were waiting for.

Heartfelt n unabashedly emotional, My Name Is Khan makes some important points. Watch it 4 its inherent sincerity, for the SRK-Kajol magic.

Saw Anupama Chopra's review this morning on NDTV.

She says that movie is highly emotional and looses the plot somewhere mid of first half and is artifically 'filmy' especially in the climax.

Though she gives a lot of flaws in the movie , she says as a final verdict as - Watch it for SRK's performance as Rizwan.

3/5 is her rating.

Hopefully seeing this tonight 9:00 pm show

ya athu enikku nerathe ariyarunnu that she is Vidhu's wife. Pakshe ennalum angane biased ayi thoniyitilla but I always view her from that angle incase of all Vidhu Chopra productions. In this case, it can be true coz MNIK is trying to break 3I records.
