My Name Is Khan makes two strong statements...
The first: B.C. (before Christ) and A.D. (after death) are milestones used to label years in the Julian and Gregorian calendars. There's now a third designation - 9/11. Post September 11, the world stands divided. Terrorist outfits continue to strike in the name of religion, but the common man, not even remotely associated with these groups, is bearing the brunt. The world is not a safe place anymore.
The second statement: There're two sets of people in this world - the good and the bad. No matter how strong the evil forces are, good always triumphs.
My Name Is Khan mirrors the era we live in. Not a day goes by when you haven't heard/read/watched news of terror attacks and innocents being killed. We live in turbulent times. Also, the movie states - and states very strongly, without mincing words - not all Muslims are terrorists.
Karan Johar's cinema got more real from Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna. In My Name Is Khan, the storyteller attempts to make a social statement and succeeds completely. At the same time, it takes no sides. If the protagonist says 'My name is Khan and I am not a terrorist', it also exposes those who misadvise youth with inflammatory and rabble-rousing speeches.

Shah Rukh and Kajol unveil My Name Is Khan (http://sify.com/movies/Shah-Rukh-and-Kajol-unveil-My-Name-Is-Khan-imagegallery-bollywood-jmrp83bgdfj.html)

Karan's take on the issue deserves the highest praise, since a subject like this is difficult to attempt. Final word? My Name Is Khan, SRK and Kajol's best outing to date.
Rizvan Khan (Shah Rukh Khan moves to San Francisco and lives with his brother (Jimmy Shergill) and sister-in-law (Sonya Jehan). Rizvan, who has Asperger's syndrome, falls in love with Mandira (Kajol). Despite protests from his brother, they get married and start a small business together. They are happy until September 11, when attitudes towards Muslims undergo a sea-change.
When tragedy strikes, Mandira is devastated and they split. Rizvan is confused and upset that the love of his life has left him. To win her back, he embarks on a touching and inspiring journey across America.
Let me alert you. The story unfolds feverishly from the very start itself. So if you miss a scene or two, chances are you would've missed some vital links in the story. The fact is, there's too much happening in the first half. Although the narrative tends to get leisurely-paced at times, the wheels continue to move from one episode to another.
A number of sequences are endearing. For instance, the romance between SRK and Kajol is subtle, yet charming. But it's SRK's relationship with Kajol and their kid that's one of the best parts of the movie. Your heart bleeds when an accident occurs and their lives are torn apart. Kajol's outburst - first, when her son meets with a catastrophe and second, when she confronts SRK - are truly shattering.
My Name Is Khan strength lies in the fact that you root for Khan all through. At the same time, you are weighed down when he's in a vulnerable situation, especially when he's labelled a terrorist and thrown behind bars. You don't realise it, but the fact is that you, as a spectator, have already got entwined in Rizvan and Mandira's lives.
There's a slight hitch in the second hour, when SRK returns to Georgia to save a hurricane-ravaged hamlet. Also, the media exercise tends to add to the length of the film. Nonetheless, it's a minor hiccup that doesn't rob the film of its punch.
There's just one word to illustrate Karan's direction - exemplary. One of the finest storytellers of our generation, he deserves brownie points for deviating from the 'Karan Johar brand of cinema' and attempting a film that knocks on your heart and stimulates your mind. My Name Is Khan, Karan takes rapid strides as a storyteller.
Shibani Bathija's screenplay is truly arresting. Shibani and Niranjan Iyengar's dialogues are noteworthy and at times, applaud-worthy. Ravi K. Chandran's cinematography is awe-inspiring. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's music gels well with the nature of the film.
When a film stars two of the finest talents of the country, you expect nothing but the best. SRK, well, how does one describe his performance? To state that this is his best work so far would be cutting short the praise he truly deserves. In fact, no amount of praise can do sufficient justice to his portrayal of Rizvan Khan. His latest work is several notches above anything he has done before. The only compliment that I can think of is, SRK has a new screen-name now. Raj is passe, Rizvan it is.

Shah Rukh and Kajol unveil My Name Is Khan (http://sify.com/movies/Shah-Rukh-and-Kajol-unveil-My-Name-Is-Khan-imagegallery-bollywood-jmrp83bgdfj.html)

Kajol is pure dynamite and casting her for this character was the most appropriate decision. No other actress could've matched SRK in histrionics the way Kajol has. In fact, SRK and Kajol compliment each other wonderfully well and this film only proves it yet again. It's a powerhouse performance from this supremely-talented actress.
The film boasts of a number of capable actors, but the ones who leave a rock-solid impact are - in this order - Zarina Wahab, Sonya Jehan, Jimmy Shergill, Arjun Mathur, Parvin Dabas and Arif Zakaria. Sugandha Garg is confident. Navneet Nishan supports well. Vinay Pathak leaves a mark in a brief role. Tanay Chheda (young SRK) and Yuvaan Makaar (SRK and Kajol's son Sameer) are excellent. The American actors, especially the kid who plays Sameer's friend, deserves mention. On the whole,My Name Is Khan is a fascinating love story, has an angle of religion and a world-shaking incident as a backdrop. It not only entertains, but also mesmerises, enthrals and captivates the viewer in those 2.40 hours. At the same time, a film like My Name Is Khan is sure to have a far-reaching influence due to its noble theme. I strongly advocate, don't miss this one! Rating: Four-and-a-half stars

How can the Shiv Sena political group of thugs get away with this kind of criminal behavior? Burning MNIK posters in the street, bullying movie theaters to take down MNIK posters, not permitting them to show the movie? Isn’t there freedom of speech in Mumbai? Why can’t someone make a simple statement that sports should be free of politics, without all the histrionics? I grew up in a small town once run by a gang boss, until a local hero stood up to him, and was arrested illegally. The community as a whole arose in outrage and put the gang out of business. Jaya Bachchan was terrorized by them for speaking the national language, Hindi, until she had to apologize. KJo had to apologize to them for calling Mumbai Bombay in ‘Wake Up Sid’. I hope the MNIK team stands up to these homeboy terrorists this time, doesn’t back down. What is going on?

MY NAME IS KHAN smashes records worldwide

February 13, 2010 8:00:04 PM IST
Bollywood Trade News Network

http://www.glamsham.com/movies/scoop...ide-021016.asp (http://www.glamsham.com/movies/scoops/10/feb/13-my-name-is-khan-smashes-records-worldwide-021016.asp)

Shah Rukh, Karan Johar & Fox come together to rewrite Box Office history as MNIK smashes all previous international box office records to record the highest-ever single opening day collections for a Hindi film worldwide.

Just when the industry believed that 3 Idiots had set records which would be stay for a long time, box office Baadshah Shah Rukh Khan's MY NAME IS KHAN looks set to break it just six weeks later!

Despite having a limited release in Maharashtra, Gujarat and parts of Madhya Pradesh on Friday, MNIK's worldwide box office collections are estimated at Rs. 25 crores for Friday! This is the highest ever collections for a non-holiday Friday in Bollywood history. Trade analysts estimate that it could have easily earned an additional 5-6 crores if it had been released normally across India. With the film playing everywhere across the country from Saturday onwards and given the strong buzz, this number is only expected to grow.

WORLDWIDE RECORDS

On the first day outside India, almost every record for Bollywood films was broken globally. Internationally, it is the biggest International opening day by almost 30% of its closest competitor, 3 Idiots.

UK BOX OFFICE RECORDS

In the UK, MNIK previewed on Thursday with an incredible £123k from 89 sites, 4th in the market place behind Avatar, The Wolfman Previews and Invictus.

In this market, MNIK has broken the record for the biggest GBO preview figure for any Bollywood release. The biggest single day preview figure in the UK was previously KANK with £98k.

The biggest total previews figure was 3 IDIOTS which had 2 days of previews (Wed/Thu) during the Xmas holiday period with £121k. MNIK single day previews are bigger than both days of 3 Idiots put together!

It is expected to be the biggest opening Bollywood film ever in this market by the weekend.

ANZ RECORDS

In Australia, Thursday previews of "MNIK" grossed a very good A$39K (US$34K). The movie is ranked #11 in the market. This is 107% of 3 Idiots Thursday BO.

In New Zealand, opening day took LC$ 13,627 (US$ 9,727). Bollywood films traditionally open on a Friday. The exception is 3 Idiots, against which MNIK has over-performed by 204%.

MIDDLE EAST RECORDS

The film is already 50% higher than any other previous film in Bollywood history with an opening day estimated at USD 300k.

There's a huge demand for additional prints in the existing chains across the Middle East and the print count is expected to increase to around 60 by next week.

Given the strong buzz, the film also will be released in Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Oman and Lebanon in the coming week.

"We are delighted with the performance and audience reactions across demographics," says Vijay Singh, "More so, because this is only phase one of the film release. In addition to the release across 45 countries, MNIK will be rolled out in a phased manner across 25 non-traditional markets from April onwards."

My Name Is Khan opened to huge response with an opening of 90-100% at multiplexes. Single screens were in the 70-80% region. The film had release problems in Mumbai circuit but wherever it managed to get a screening there were huge crowds to see the film. The critics have given 4/5 stars but public reports are not at the same level. Reports are good but not outstanding like Three Idiots. Overall the film should emerge a winner and time will tell how big.

Q. Was My Name Is Khan the biggest worldwide opening on day one?

A. No it was second biggest worldwide opening day after Three Idiots. In India it had fourth biggest first day while overseas was biggest first day.

Pramod K

Q. What is the most likely fate of My Name Is Khan in India? Can it be a blockbuster?

A. The film had release problems so its best to wait until the dust settles and see what happens over the weekdays. Blockbuster status may be difficult as it does not have all round appeal and is more likely to do better in urban centres.

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - In its ninth round on the foreign circuit, "Avatar" defiantly stared down the overseas openings of three films from major studios, emerging as No. 1 for the weekend with $59 million.
Director James Cameron's blockbuster 3D feature pushed its record-setting overseas gross to $1.69 billion, and its unprecedented worldwide gross to $2.35 billion. The 20th Century Fox release, playing on 8,453 screens in 71 markets, was the sole holdover in the weekend's top five titles.
No. 2 for the weekend was Warner Bros.' "Valentine's Day," which kicked off its foreign run at 4,562 venues in 52 markets for a weekend tally of $30.4 million. The Garry Marshall-directed romantic comedy, with an ensemble cast including Ashton Kutcher and Jennifer Garner, opened strongest in Australia (No. 1 with $6.4 million from 373 sites), the U.K. (No. 2 with $4.7 million from 432 spots) and Germany ($2.5 million from 410 sites).

No. 3 was Fox's adventure fantasy "Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief," director Chris Columbus' adaptation of the popular book series by Rick Riordan. Opening round produced $28 million from 5,800 venues in 40 territories.
Finishing fourth was Universal's "The Wolfman," which collected an estimated $21 million from 4,222 situations in 37 territories. Director Joe Johnston's update (starring Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins and Emily Blunt) of the classic 1941 Universal horror title (starring Lon Chaney Jr., Bela Lugosi and Maria Ouspenskaya) opened at No. 3 in the U.K. ($3.4 million) and No. 1 in Mexico ($3.2 million).
No. 5 was Fox's "My Name Is Khan," a 9/11-related drama about a Mumbai Muslim (played by Bollywood's Shah Rukh Khan) with Asperger's syndrome. The English-language and Hindi Indian production opened at No. 1 in India ($9.2 million from 1,450 screens) and generated an overall weekend tally of $14.2 million from 1,572 screens in seven markets.

MNIK: After record opening comes the slump: Rediff.com Movies (http://movies.rediff.com/report/2010/feb/15/mnik-after-grand-opening-comes-slump.htm)

My Name is Khan opened with a bang at the box office, earning a whopping Rs 85 crores (US $18m), but it saw a drop in business from Monday as the word of the mouth was not good enough to sustain the film. Though many critics loved it and so did the classes, the masses overall seem to be in a rejection mode.
Says Komal Nahta, Bollywood trade analyst, "On the whole, My Name Is Khan is far from entertaining and also too boring for the general masses. For the heavy budget at which it has been made, it will keep its worldwide distributors (Fox Searchlight) in the red. Business in big cities, especially in South India [ Images (http://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=india) ], Muslim centres and overseas will be better but it will be below the mark in North India as also in smaller centres and single-screen cinemas. It may be appreciated by the class audience but the masses will reject the film."
The buzz for the film was huge ever since the controversy between Shah Rukh Khan [ Images (http://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=shah+rukh+khan) ] and Shiv Sena [ Images (http://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=shiv+sena) ] broke out.
Sena supremo Bal Thackeray [ Images (http://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=bal+thackeray) ] demanded that Shah Rukh Khan apologise to the nation after he said in a press conference that he wished if Pakistani players could play in IPL 3.
This created a furore and Thackeray ordered Shiv Sainiks to see that the film was not released in Mumbai [ Images (http://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=mumbai) ] and Maharashtra [ Images (http://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=maharashtra) ].
The police gave extra protection to almost every theatre and multiplex for a peaceful screening and amidst tension people came out in hordes to watch the film in Mumbai as well as other parts of the country.
"The curiosity value is over, it seems. The picture has suffered a considerable drop in collections on Monday," said Vinod Mirani, another Bollywood trade analyst.
Added Amod Mehra, another trade analyst, "At this moment, it appears the film will not be able to recover the cost because it has been sold at a high price."
Asked about critics loving the film and some of them even giving five stars rating, Mehra said, "Earlier there were paid previews of the film, now there is paid review of the film."
Naysayers notwithstanding, the film had a spectacular opening for the first weekend.
In a statement, Karan Johar [ Images (http://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=karan+johar) ], producer and director of the film said, "I am overwhelmed by the unprecedented audience response for our film. The audience has the power and more power to them."

"The most exciting part," says Vijay Singh [ Images (http://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=vijay+singh) ], CEO Fox Star Studios, "is that the worldwide collections (http://movies.rediff.com/report/2010/feb/15/mnik-sets-records-for-srk-karan-johar.htm) jumped every day from Friday to Saturday to Sunday. This shows that the audience is absolutely loving Rizwan and Mandira."
Fox has distributed My Name is Khan worldwide.

My Name Is Khan running big in Karachi
Monday, 15 February , 2010, 09:51

http://im.sify.com/entertainment/movies/images/feb2010/mykhan_482x10feb10.jpg

Karachi: Shah Rukh Khan starrer My Name Is Khan is turning out to be a hit big with the moviegoers in this Pakistani city with the film running to packed houses.
"Normally the 3 and 6 o'clock shows have reasonable attendance and the late night show is packed but this time we have been witnessing full house for all three shows which is remarkable," Nadeem Mandviwalla, owner of Nishat cinema, said.
The movie was released on February 12 in two main cinema theatres and also at the only multiplex which is screening it on two halls with four daily shows to cope with the rush.
"The fact that the Shiv Sena made such a big issue of Shah Rukh Khan's statement about Pakistani cricketers has also added to the interest in the movie," Mandviwalla said.
It is also the first major Shah Rukh Khan movie to be released in Pakistan since the government allowed screening of Indian movies in cinema halls two years back.
"In the last two years this is the first proper Shah Rukh Khan starrer that has been released in Pakistan," another cinema manager said.

Long lines and rows of cars can be seen parked on the busy M Jinnah road outside the two big cinema halls that are screening My Name Is Khan, causing miseries for the traffic police who are finding it difficult to cope with the rush.

"Definitely My name is Khan has generated lot of interest in Pakistan and also contributed significantly to the cultural and arts scene, but overall I think the release of Indian movies is good for us as it means people have some entertainment to look forward too," art critic, Muneeba said.

While Mumbai braved (http://movies.rediff.com/report/2010/feb/12/mnik-opens-in-119-theatres-in-us-canada.htm) the Shiv Sena to catch My Name is Khan in theatres on Friday, Berlin residents braved sub-zero temperatures to book their tickets.
Fans of Shah Rukh Khan also waited for the actor, who was accompanied by his co-star Kajol and the film's director, Karan Johar, at the 60th Berlinale International Film Festival.
http://im.rediff.com/movies/2010/feb/15sld2.jpg

Fans, young and old, held pictures of their favourite star and mobbed the actor at the red carpet.
http://im.rediff.com/movies/2010/feb/15sld3.jpg

Proof of the actor's popularity was evident when online tickets for My Name is Khan were sold out in five seconds before dawn and were reportedly auctioned on ebay at 1,000 euros (Rs 60,000) each.
http://im.rediff.com/movies/2010/feb/15sld4.jpg

Overcome by such an enthusiastic welcome, the actor praised the organisers of the Berlin International Film Festival and his fans alike.
http://im.rediff.com/movies/2010/feb/15sld5.jpg

The film is already scaling the US box office charts (http://movies.rediff.com/report/2010/feb/15/mnik-sets-records-for-srk-karan-johar.htm), and doing very well overseas.

http://images.bollywoodhungama.com/img/news/10/feb/priyadarshan.jpg The prolific Priyadarshan's reputation after his television appearance calling the conflict between the Shiv Sena and Shah Rukh Khan a publicity stunt, has put him in the 'block' list of many important cell phones in Mumbai.

Predictably, Priyan pleads innocence. "I was quoted out of context. I'd never speak like that about Shah Rukh Khan and Karan Johar. They've both been very nice to me. If I've hurt either of them I apologize to them publicly, and would like to add that in any conflict between filmmakers and politicians I'd naturally and inevitably support my own fraternity."

Priyadarshan wanted to call his new film with Ajay Devgn, Bipasha Basu and Akshaye Khanna Ishaq. In fact he had all but finalized the title when to his horror Priyan found out that a film entitled Ishqiya is already out.

"Vishal Bhardwaj beat me to it!" laughs Priyan. "He took the title Ishqiya. And once that was out, there was no point in calling my film Ishaq. So we've named it Garam Hawa after M S Sathyu's classic."

Priyan hopes to live up to the title of Sathyu's film. "I'm not such a bad filmmaker, you know. If I'm the director of De Dana Dan I've also made Kancheevaram."

Picked up rapidly over the weekend. Saturday was better than Friday, while Sunday was better than Saturday. This, despite no release in Maharashtra on Friday [except a few theatres in Mumbai] and a scattered release on Saturday. The opening weekend closed at Rs. 33.20 cr. nett, which was confirmed by Fox to this writer. The Friday figures were approx. Rs. 8 cr., Saturday was Rs. 11.06 cr. and Sunday was a record-breaking Rs. 14.14 cr. [official figures supplied by Fox]. Mumbai, Delhi-U.P., Punjab, Bengal and South have performed exceedingly well, while C.P., C.I. and Rajashan aren’t that strong

Movie review: My Name Is Khan
February 15, 2010

By Theresa Smith

RATING: ****

Melodramatic as only a Bollywood movie can get away with, My Name Is Khan sees director Karan Johar successfully draw on the aesthetics he is used to and mix it with Hollywood narrative pacing to create the ultimate masala movie.

Here the term is not meant to be derogatory, but a compliment, because this film is indeed a zesty mix of the best of both traditions.

Johar has again teamed up with his winning duo from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai - charismatic Shah Rukh Khan and the lovely Kajol - to try to paint a picture of some of the frustration Muslim Americans feel about the ignorance Christian fellow Americans display about who they are.

He delicately touches on the subject of the conservatism of US society when it comes to matters of "the other's" culture and religion (a stance made more ironic by the supposed US ideal of expression of identity and self being paramount). However, Johar softens what could have seemed like an attack on an entire nation by using as the main vehicle of his questioning a man who is slightly out of step with his fellow humans. The only distinction this character makes between people is whether they are good or bad, and this he judges by their actions.

SRK tackles the role of a Mumbai-born Rizwan Khan, who has Asperger's Syndrome. This type of autism means he is unable to understand the unexpressed emotions of others and has trouble expressing his own emotions.

Hyper-intelligent and actually quite articulate, Khan strikes up a relationship, and eventually marries, the charming Mandira Rathore (Kajol). A Hindu, she allows her son Sameer to not only take Khan's surname but also his religion... and therein lies the seed of all the bad things that happen in the second half of the film.

While the first half has a quirkily wondrous rom-com setting of cute-meet preceded by cleverly filmed exposition and set up, the second half is the darkly serious exploration of identity.

At the behest of an angry Mandira, Khan wanders through the highways and byways of America, exposing him to different viewpoints. The subplot, which sees him helping out a destitute community in a storm-torn Georgia, is the story America wishes they could've told after Hurricane Katrina and the eventual outcome of his journey is not the point.

The way the people around him are touched by his efforts - gaining a slight measure of understanding of what it means to be human - is the crux of the matter.

SRK shows unusual restraint, never descending into caricature and manages to create a character the audience can empathise with, a difficult thing to do since Khan is meant not to be in touch with emotion. Khan standing outside of sentiment also makes the trouble he experiences because of being Muslim, that much more poignant, because SRK makes the audience feel it instead.

However, Kajol is the one with the more difficult role. Instead of being allowed to play the stereotype of nurturing mother, she has to become the angry avenger who must seek justice. She does this delicately, without descending into shrieking harpy territory.

At two-and-a-half hours, it's very much a Bollywood length, with the song and dance aspect meshing much neater than many. For instance, the gospel choir Khan comes across in Georgia makes much more sense than the surfboard-waving singing surfers of Bride and Prejudice.

Ultimately, the Bollywood sensibilities (like the way every scene simply drips with OTT theatricality) may seem overdone to someone who's never watched anything like it, but they cannot fail to get the message, that just because someone is a Muslim, doesn't mean they're automatically a terrorist.

If you liked... Adam or Paa... you will like this.

Review in the Canberra Times, 13 February 2010

Earnest, but entertaining meditation on difficult times
Reviewer: Jane Freebury
3.5 stars

The very first scene in this Bollywood epic could have been lifted from the personal experience of its lead actor Shahrukh Khan. The face of Indian cinema was detained at an airport in New Jersey last year and questioned at length because his name, a common Muslim name, came up on a security alert list – and the United States officials on the immigration desk that day had obviously never heard of him or the Mumbai film industry. It could have triggered an international incident.

Over the last two decades in his homeland India, SRK has been in about 70 films, and is a huge star for whom doors fly open rather than close. It is a sweet irony that his latest film is about exactly the issue that the embarrassing incident drew attention to, the post-9/11 mood in the West.

It is the story of Rizwan Khan (played as a child by one of the boys from Slumdog Millionaire and by Khan as an adult), a Muslim boy from Mumbai who suffers from Asperger syndrome, a milder form of autism.

He is cared for by a loving mother, but when she dies he flies to the US to be with his younger brother and build a new life. It help’s people’s understanding when his condition is at last identified by his brother’s wife, who is a psychology lecturer.

This serious and hugely ambitious enterprise, a sprawling 2.4 hours long, has many qualities.

SRK, usually the smouldering heartstopper, is transformed in this film into a socially awkward individual, physically clumsy and undemonstrative. He does, however, get the girl. As Mandira, the single mother who befriends and then marries Rizwan, Hindi actress Kajol is gentle and convincing.

I have to tell you that their love is not celebrated with any big song-and-dance numbers. Don’t let the opening credit for choreography fool you, there is just a little bit of dancing at the wedding, and though the singing and swaying in a scene in a church looked like it was going to develop into something, it didn’t happen there either. They could have slipped a couple of numbers in.

And yet there is so much more to this than guy gets girl.

If anything, it trips itself up because it tries to say so much – about racism, radicalisation, about the responsibility to report extremist plotting, and the need for tolerance, inclusiveness and a recognition of our shared humanity.

Forrest Gump, another tale of a man swept up by history, comes to mind as My Name Is Khan is, in a way, a meditation on our complicated times.

Earnest, but entertaining.

I saw My name is KHan...I think it was the biggest crowd I've seen after Om Shanthi Ohm for a Hindi Movie...

First of all...

Is it gonna be an All time block buster : NO
Is it the best of Karan or Sharukh -- NO
Is it an usual KJ romantic Movie - NO.

The movie gives out a message " all muslims are not bad people and all bad people are not muslims" .It urges them that path to glory is not through violence and it's through giving love to the fellow beings...And it uses a romantic story to convey the message and Hero was given autism targeting some awards ..There is no doubt that it's a "Good "serious movie and it lacks commercial elements.

Other than that I didn't see anything extra ordinary in the movie to make it an alltime block buster. The movie targets educated and urbane audience and NRI's ..definitely not the masses. If it comes out a winner it's clearly because of King Khan who's done a wonderfull job which can be compared to Rameshan Nair of Thanmathra.

The movie targets educated and urbane audience and NRI's ..definitely not the masses. If it comes out a winner it's clearly because of King Khan who's done a wonderfull job which can be compared to Rameshan Nair of Thanmathra.

And KAJOL still looks soooooooooo gorgeous!!!!!!!!!!!!

The real winner
Scoring £936,000 from just 91 screens, Indian film My Name Is Khan enjoyed a scorching screen average of £10,291, as well as the biggest ever opening for a Bollywood flick, beating previous record holder Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (£749,000), from 2006. Whether My Name Is Khan will go on to beat 2001's Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (lifetime total of £2.5m) to be the biggest ever Bollywood film at the UK box office remains to be seen. All three of these titles star Shahrukh Khan, who has enjoyed eight UK openings at £400,000-plus, including more-recent releases Om Shanti Om and Rab Ne Bana De Jodi.

I saw MNIK as well !

Overall its a decent attempt not a classic , it was dragging at times and it
had some scenes which i thought was inspired from Forest gump .But the school bullying and misinterpretation of Islam afta 9/11 was well portrayed .Sharukh looked rusty at times and i dont think this is his best performance ,Kajol as usual pretty ! .Overall an Average film but a good message.....

TimesPulse calculates the most popular movies among NYTimes.com readers, based on the cumulative number of reviews read, movies details pages viewed and trailers accessed.

1.Valentine's Day (New Line)
(2010, Garry Marshall, PG-13) Valentine's Day (New Line)

The dire romantic comedy “Valentine’s Day” is neither romantic nor remotely comedic.

2.Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief
(2010, Chris Columbus, PG) Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief

In “Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief,” virginal teenagers do battle with fire-belching monsters.

3.My Name is Khan
(, Karan Johar, NR) My Name is Khan

“My Name Is Khan” is an effective exercise in Bollywood high emotionalism.

4.The Wolfman
(2009, Joe Johnston, R) The Wolfman

The title character in “The Wolfman” suffers from a vexing identity crisis, and so does the movie.

5.(Critic's Pick)
Avatar (Fox)
(2009, James Cameron, PG-13) Avatar (Fox)

With “Avatar” James Cameron has turned one man’s dream of the movies into a trippy joy ride about the end of life — our moviegoing life included — as we know it.

6. (Critic's Pick)
A Serious Man
(2009, Joel Coen, Ethan Coen, R) A Serious Man

“A Serious Man” is, like its biblical source, a distilled, hyperbolic account of the human condition.

7. (Critic's Pick)
Crazy Heart
(, Scott Cooper, R) Crazy Heart

“Crazy Heart,” written and directed by Scott Cooper, is a small movie perfectly scaled to the big performance at its center.

8.Videocracy
(, Erik Gandini, NR) Videocracy

“Videocracy” is a queasy-funny and unapologetically biased look at the televisual world that the Italian prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi, has created.

9. Dear John
(2010, Lasse Hallström, PG-13) Dear John

“Dear John” may not be strong medicine, but it delivers an effective, pleasing dose of pure sentiment and vicarious heartache.
10.
A Single Man
(2009, Tom Ford, R) A Single Man

Colin Firth wears the face of grief in Tom Ford’s directorial debut, “A Single Man.”
11. (Critic's Pick)
The Hurt Locker
(2008, Kathryn Bigelow, R) The Hurt Locker

“The Hurt Locker,” directed by Kathryn Bigelow from a script by Mark Boal, is the best nondocumentary American feature made yet about the war in Iraq.
12.
From Paris With Love
(2010, Pierre Morel, R) From Paris With Love

“From Paris With Love,” starring John Travolta and Jonathan Rhys Meyers, is really a one-sided buddy movie.
13.
An Education
(2008, Lone Scherfig, PG-13) An Education

If in hindsight “An Education” might make you a little queasy, it is hard to resist.
14.
Legion
(2010, Scott Charles Stewart, R) Legion

In “Legion” the world ends not with a bang but with a short stack.
15. (Critic's Pick)
Up in the Air
(2009, Jason Reitman, R) Up in the Air

One of the pleasures of “Up in the Air” is that its actresses share the frame with George Clooney as equals, not props.
16.
The White Ribbon
(2009, Michael Haneke, R)

“The White Ribbon,” by Michael Haneke, is an unnerving but unsatisfying chronicle of a German village filled with hidden cruelty, set on the eve of World War I. -- A. O. Scott
17. (Critic's Pick)
Ajami
(, Scandar Copti, Yaron Shani, NR) Ajami

One of the pleasures of “Ajami” is its deep immersion in the beats and melodies of everyday life in Jaffa and beyond.
18.
The Last Station
(2009, Michael Hoffman, R) The Last Station

To say that the actors in “The Last Station” overdo it would be an understatement.
19. (Critic's Pick)
Terribly Happy
(2008, Henrik Ruben Genz, NR) Terribly Happy

Henrik Ruben Genz’s diabolical comedy “Terribly Happy” assures us that yes, something is definitely rotten in the state of Denmark.
20.
1974: The Red Riding Trilogy Part 1
(2009, Julian Jarrold, NR) 1974: The Red Riding Trilogy Part 1

The blood that runs through the “Red Riding” trilogy begins as a river that races and then rages until it floods this dank, dark, pitiless world in misery.
21.
October Country
(2009, Michael Palmieri, Donal Mosher, NR) October Country

The filmmakers Michael Palmieri and Donal Mosher document a family’s woes in “October Country.”
22.
The Vicious Kind
(2008, Lee Toland Krieger, R) The Vicious Kind

There is a lot of hurting in the family melodrama “The Vicious Kind,” and a lot of healing too.
23.
The Blind Side
(2010, John Lee Hancock, PG-13) The Blind Side

“The Blind Side” is a movie made up almost entirely of turning points and yet curiously devoid of drama or suspense.
24.
Blood Done Sign My Name
(, Jeb Stuart, NR)
25. (Critic's Pick)
District 9
(2009, Neill Blomkamp, R) District 9

At its core, the smart, swift “District 9” tells the story of how a member of the socially dominant group becomes aware of the injustice that keeps him in his place.

http://images.bollywoodhungama.com/img/biztalk/1702biztalk.jpg The one question that I am being asked persistently and relentlessly is, has MY NAME IS KHAN surpassed 3 IDIOTS? Let me come to the point right away. In India, 3 IDIOTS is much ahead of MY NAME IS KHAN for various reasons…

One, the release period of 3 IDIOTS [Christmas vacations] ensured a long holiday period for the film.
Two, 3 IDIOTS catered to a universal audience and also had tremendous repeat value. In fact, the moviegoers had started watching the film again and again in its opening week itself.
Plus, most importantly, the two genres are as different as apples and mangoes. 3 IDIOTS was a solid entertainer, while MY NAME IS KHAN is more of a serious film.

These three factors give 3 IDIOTS an edge.

Let's not forget that MY NAME IS KHAN has had a smaller release comparatively. 3 IDIOTS opened across big and small stations at one ago, while MY NAME IS KHAN was released at A and B centres and not in as many shows as 3 IDIOTS. Besides, MY NAME IS KHAN had a disturbed release [on Friday] and a scattered release [on Saturday], which is well known by now.

Monday onwards, MY NAME IS KHAN has held well at plexes of big centres, especially Delhi-U.P., Punjab, Bengal and South circuits, but has witnessed a mark decline in C.P., C.I. and Rajasthan circuits. Mumbai circuit has been extremely mixed. At places, it's holding well. At places, it isn't.

Given the fact that Fox has acquired its global rights and are releasing the film in phases, one will have to wait before passing any judgement on MY NAME IS KHAN. In fact, the actual picture would emerge only when Fox opens several key markets in April, on a big scale.

In India, the second weekend plays a key role vis-a-vis big-budget ventures. Let's see how MY NAME IS KHAN performs in its forthcoming weekend!

MNIK: After record opening comes the slump

http://im.rediff.com/movies/2010/feb/11mnik6.jpg

My Name is Khan opened with a bang at the box office, earning a whopping Rs 85 crores (US $18m), but it saw a drop in business from Monday as the word of the mouth was not good enough to sustain the film.

Though many critics loved it and so did the classes, the masses overall seem to be in a rejection mode.

Says Komal Nahta, Bollywood trade analyst, "On the whole, My Name Is Khan is far from entertaining and also too boring for the general masses. For the heavy budget at which it has been made, it will keep its worldwide distributors (Fox Searchlight) in the red. Business in big cities, especially in South India [ Images ], Muslim centres and overseas will be better but it will be below the mark in North India as also in smaller centres and single-screen cinemas. It may be appreciated by the class audience but the masses will reject the film."

The buzz for the film was huge ever since the controversy between Shah Rukh Khan [ Images ] and Shiv Sena [ Images ] broke out.

Sena supremo Bal Thackeray [ Images ] demanded that Shah Rukh Khan apologise to the nation after he said in a press conference that he wished if Pakistani players could play in IPL 3.

This created a furore and Thackeray ordered Shiv Sainiks to see that the film was not released in Mumbai [ Images ] and Maharashtra [ Images ].

In a statement, Karan Johar [ Images ], producer and director of the film said, "I am overwhelmed by the unprecedented audience response for our film. The audience has the power and more power to them."

"The most exciting part," says Vijay Singh [ Images ], CEO Fox Star Studios, "is that the worldwide collections jumped every day from Friday to Saturday to Sunday. This shows that the audience is absolutely loving Rizwan and Mandira."

Fox has distributed My Name is Khan worldwide.

MNIK is going to be a flop movie.. :ayye:

My Name Is Khan showed a pretty noticeable drop on Tuesday compared to Monday. The drop is around 30% from Monday which is pretty big for a Monday to Tuesday drop.

MUMBAI: My Name Is Khan has grossed Rs 902 million (Rs 90.2 crore) worldwide in its opening weekend
Even the fact that it was a non-holiday 3-day weekend vis a vis both the previous high grossing films, which had 4-day Christmas weekends, did not prove to be a deterrent for Shah Rukh Khan. The movie has smashed existing global opening records in every country in which it was released this weekend.
My Name is Khan has scorched screens worldwide and raked in Rs 902 million (Rs 90.2 crore) ($ 19 million) worldwide in three days making it the biggest ever three-day collection worldwide ever.
"The most exciting part is that the worldwide collections jumped every day from Friday to Saturday to Sunday. This shows that the audience is absolutely loving Rizvan and Mandira," says Vijay Singh, CEO Fox Star Studios.
Sunday GBO in markets like US, Australia, UK & Middle East set new records for the Biggest single day internationally for a Bollywood movie.
Just to give a sense of scale, the overall weekend collections of MNIK have been double of closest competitor 3 Idiots worldwide.
Sanford Panitch, president of FIP, was esctatic over the results, saying, "While initially driven by the power of this extraordinary cast and director, it is My Name Is Khan as a film that has captivated audiences everywhere we have opened. An incredible start to this powerful and moving film."
In India, despite the issues in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Indore and other centres on Friday & part of Saturday, the film has opened exceptionally well. In states where the film opened normally, including Delhi-UP, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerela, the collections have been the highest ever.

Box Office 2.0: The Worldwide Box Office Wrath of “Khan”
A scene from Karan Johar's "My Name Is Khan." Image courtesy of Fox Searchlight.

As indieWIRE noted in this weekend’s box office column, Fox Searchlight’s debut of the Bollywood film “My Name Is Khan” was a huge success over President’s Day. The Karan Johar directed-film - about a Muslim played by Shah Rukh Khan who suffers from Asperger’s syndrome and is detained at LAX after 9/11 when security mistakes his disability for suspicious behavior - opened on 120 screens across America last Friday. For the 3-day weekend, “Khan” took in $1,944,027 placing 13th overall and averaging $16,200 - topping “Valentine’s Day” as the best average of any film. For the entire holiday weekend, it grossed $2,264,983 - averaging $18,875, which was again the top average of any film in release.

“‘My Name Is Khan’ had the biggest box office weekend ever on a Bolllywood film in North America,” Sheila DeLoach, Executive Vice-President of Distribution at Fox Searchlight confirmed to indieWIRE. “It [also had] the highest per screen average of any film this weekend.”

The film tops recent Bollywood success story “3 Idiots,” directed by Rajkumar Hirani, which was released by Reliance Big Pictures in late December. That film debuted on a nearly identical 119 screens and grossed $1,645,502, averaging $13,828. That film’s total gross (so far, though it shouldn’t add too much more) is $6,473,831. “Khan” also beat the previous record holder, 2007’s “Om Shanti Om,” which grossed $1,764,131 on 114 theaters, averaging $15,474.

Outside North America, “Khan” found huge success across all the eight markets it was released in. In the UK, it also set a Bollywood box office record. The film grossed £936,000 over the weekend, entering the UK Box Office charts at number six. The UK’s top film - like in North America - was “Valentine’s Day,” which grossed £3.7 million and, although it averaged £8,640 on 432 screens, “My Name is Khan” averaged £10,291 from 91 sites.

The previous record for a Bollywood film in its opening weekend in the UK was held by 2006’s “Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna,” which grossed nearly £750,000. That film managed $3,275,443 in North America.

Overall, “Khan” grossed $14.2 million from 1,692 screens across the world. It scored the biggest Bollywood debut ever for the United Arab Emirates with $1.1 million (on only 35 screens), Australia with $372,000, and New Zealand with $99,000.

“Khan” was actually released amidst some considerable controversy in India. Its star - Shah Rukh Khan - and Shiv Sena, a Hindu political party in India were at odds after Khan questioned a cricket league draft process in which no Pakistani players were selected, including those who had played in previous seasons of the Indian Premier League. As a result, Shiv Sena (which regards itself as a defender traditional Hindu moral values), protested the film’s release and consequently it opened to very tight security in Mumbai. All 63 theaters it was screening in in Mumbai cancelled the first day show of opening day.

The controversy obviously didn’t seem to cause much damage to film’s success there, though. It topped the box-office chart in India with $9.2 million, making up two thirds of its worldwide gross.

Fox Star Studios India, the Indian distributors of the film, plans to take the film to 25 non-traditional markets starting in April.

“My Name is Khan” (+)
The acting, script and music add up to one magnificent film. It is a totally different experience than “Slumdog Millionaire,” which was the first Indian movie experience from Bollywood for many American audiences that gave us an appreciation of Indian films. The script of “Khan,” with touches that are especially Indian, could have come out of Hollywood. Indeed, while an early series of scenes are situated in India, the movie is overwhelmingly sited in the United States.

The movie, almost epic in its story, is about Rizvan Khan (Shah Rukh Khan) who suffers from Asperger’s syndrome. He has a staggered walk, makes repetitive comments, always tells the truth regardless of the consequences, reacts with panic to certain colors, and he doesn’t like to touch or be touched. His condition is a variant of autism, and those who suffer from it tend also to be very smart.

Rizvan, a devout Muslim, follows his brother to America where he falls in love with Mandira (Kajol Devgan), a divorced woman with a son who works in a beauty parlor. Mandira and her son are Hindu. A lot happens in this movie, including 9/11, and the anger of some Americans is exhibited toward Muslims (sometimes in the form of assaults). One such incident causes the death of Mandira’s son who took his stepfather’s name of Khan, which is an unmistakable Muslim name. The young man is killed by a group of adolescents on a soccer field.

For reasons you will learn if you see the film, Rizvan is seeking to meet the U.S. president to tell him that he is not a terrorist, a compulsive need fostered by his autism. There are tears and laughs throughout the movie as well as surreal scenes. All in all, it is a work of art. It is also a great plus for America’s Muslims — who will applaud the fact the film makes the case they are unfairly discriminated against.

I saw the picture at the AMC Loews Village . The 6:00 p.m. show which I attended was sold out, as was the 2:30 p.m. show when I was turned away. The audience was overwhelming filled with Indians, Hindus and Muslims. I was told by a young Indian woman that Shah Rukh Khan is Bollywood’s major male film star. He was superb in this picture.

Mutiplexes Dominated By My Name Is Khan In Week Two

Thursday 18th February 2010 09.30 IST
Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

My Name Is Khan will be given huge amount of screen space at multiplexes in week two despite falling collections at many places from Tuesday onwards and competition of a few other releases.

There is about 20% reductions of shows at major multiplexes from week one. A multiplex which had 25 shows in week one will be giving 20 shows in week two while a multiplex with 10 shows in week one will have around 8 in week two.

This may enable My Name Is Khan to put up good numbers especially over the second weekend. Most single screens will also be retaining the film in week two as the new releases are mainly multiplex films.

My Name Is Khan added around 3.25 crore nett on Wednesday taking its five day business to nearly 42 crore nett.

The high grossing multiplexes in Mumbai, Pune, Delhi NCR, Punjab, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Bangalore continue to do the best business. The first week nett business will be the third highest in the history of Hindi cinema.

My Name Is Khan has the advantage of no big films for competition in the next few weeks which means it will be number one choice for multiplexes chains and this will enable it have plenty of screen time despite falling collections at many centres especially CP Berar, CI and Rajasthan.

Had a terrific weekend. Monday onwards, has been maintaining well at big city plexes and select single screens, while single screens of mass-dominated centres aren’t encouraging. Is best in Mumbai, Delhi-U.P, Punjab, Kolkata and South India. C.P., C.I. and Rajasthan are not up to the mark. Overall, Week 1 nett figures are big:- approx. Rs. 48.45 cr. nett. The day-wise breakup is as follows:- Friday 8 cr., Saturday 11 cr., Sunday 14 cr., Monday 5 cr., Tuesday 4 cr., Wednesday 3.2 cr., Thursday 3.25 cr.

Box Office Top 5 :Top 5: 'M.N.I.K.' Week 1 is huge in India: Rs. 48.45 cr. nett (http://www.bollywoodhungama.com/trade/top5/index.html)
