MALAYALAM
- Take Off ~ Easily the best among all Indian Languages I witnessed this year. Boosted by a bunch of powerful performances led by Parvathy who is in top gear to portray Sameera. The best debutante work by a director since Udayanaanu Thaaram.
- Thondimuthalum Drisksakshiyum ~ Very rare instance where the movie is so realistic in its presentation and yet didn't give a single yawning moment. It's the brilliance of Dileesh's which made him go ahead with a subject which most prefers to short films.
- Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol ~ A movie which depicts the lost and retrieved romance between a middle-aged couple and how their chemistry affects or influences the other members of the family as well as the society. With strong performances from the lead cast and handling multiple issues in a seamlessly humorous way.
- Kaattu ~ This is the movie which I have been waiting for quite a while. Based on the legendary Padmarajan's work, his son delivers a terrific script which is aptly executed by the director. The lead actors deliver their career-best performances where the film never gave a moment of boredom despite its outstanding detailing of milieu which pushes the movie over 160 minutes. AKA has done what Bharathan or I V Sasi would have done with the script. Padmarajan can be really proud of his son.
- Rakshadhikari Baiju ~ It will be a challenge for anyone to convey the storyline of this movie since I believe it doesn't have one. Its just incidents following one after another. But the highlight was each incident was interesting as well as relatable which makes this movie close to my heart.
- Varnyathil Aashanka ~ Perhaps the movie which I watched multiple times to have a great laugh. Realistic situations peppered with some well-written humor, Siddharth Bharathan continues his great form as a director.
- C/O Saira Bhanu ~ A movie which shows the struggle of a common person to attain justice for the wrongly convicted. Manju Warrier's first sign of comeback after a bunch of dismal choices backed by a smart script.
- Villain ~ The most underrated but brave attempt of this year. A movie which breaks the usual rules of a mainstream cinema even it's more commercial points ie interval & climax. A recent second viewing strengthened my belief in this choice.
- Aadu 2 ~ A movie which delivers exactly as it is promised. One of the few movies that entertained me with the tag of an entertainer. With a pack of characters with a cult following, no wonder it cut the Xmas cake 2017.
- Maayanadhi ~ Those who can get connected with the characters will love the film. Those who love leisurely paced romantic drama like Annayum Rasoolum can feel what the director wants to convey. It's like a cool breeze in midst of a heavy storm.
TAMIL
- Vikram Vedha ~ Easily the best Tamil movie I saw. A smart take on the popular fable with violence and underworld in backdrop, backed by some brilliant performances.
- Aruvi ~ If there was a slight entertainment value, this movie would have been the best in the list of Tamil movies. A gem in midst of the loud works with outstanding performances from the cast and interesting moments.
- Thupparivaalan ~ Always a huge fan of Myshkkin's works and rarely he disappointed me (Mughamoodi is one). Eventhough his character didn't become entirely Sherlocked, still he came up with a work which is deeply rooted in its terrain.
- 8 Thottakal ~ Much criticized by the monotonous (poor) performance from the lead actor, still, the movie is a gripping slow-paced thriller on how situations change by a human error.
HINDI
- Newton ~ For its raw approach in dealing with an untold story, boosted by a terrific performance from Pankaj Thripathi & Rajkummar Rao, Easily the best this year from Hindi.
- Bairelly Ki Barfi ~ Smart, Witty which reminded me of Priyadarshan of 80s, this is one of those genuine attempts in comedy from Hindi Cinema after a long time I believe.
- Tumhari Sulu ~ Seems like Hindi Film Industry is in a middle class mode because success is coming out from that section. The highlight is the manner the movie ended which truly empowers the female section of the society. Of course, its humorous narrative is the main strength.
- Secret Superstar ~ Seems like the Middle Class has only found a spot in this list. There is nothing new in terms of storyline but loved the well written as well as well acted moments which makes anyone emotional.
- Hindi Medium ~ I felt the second half was over the top with a climax which was too preachy. Still the genuine attempt and conveying a relevant message, the movie finds a place.
TELUGU
- Arjun Reddy ~ The Best Telugu Movie I saw Till Date!!! Haunting as well as Brilliant!!
- Ghazi ~ A good attempt from an Industry which is known for mass masalas and coming up with war story without bringing any sort of cheap commercial elements.
- Baahubali 2 - The Conclusion ~ A HUGE ENTERTAINMENT!!!
