The answer is simple...filmmakers in their prime in the 80s and 90s knew how to present realistic stories in an entertaining manner. They did not shy away from adding a few moments high on drama, a few theatrical dialogues and a few comedy scenes and songs to widen the accptability of their movies. Kireedam (Jagathy's character for the sole purpose of comedy, 'chali' in today's terms), Manichithrathazhu (so many comedy scenes and a few songs), Ulladakkam (Jagathy, Kunchan, and Innocent only for the sake of comedy) are some examples. Today's realistic films do not understand that there is a clear line between cinema and docufiction. Having a few entertaining elements is seen as an intellectual defeat or a dumbing down. Movies that have understood that balnce hav done well...Sudani from Nigeria, Androiid Kunjappan etc.
Pinne, annum innum, pakka commercial entertainers thanneyaanu industry hit and BB status. Kilukkam, Aaram Thampuran, Rajamaniickam etc... If the audience were different back in the 90s movies like Ponthan Mada and Guru would have been BBs. We all know what happened to those films at the box office. So, relax, the audience have not changed. The filmmakers need to understand that realistic does not mean cutting out every avenue of entertainment to conduct a character study.

എല്ലാവർക്കും realistic feel gud drama(വാല് പോലെ political correctness ഉം) മതി.. ഈ feel gud - motivation-political correctness...
