Shaji Kailas: Kaduva’s story is entirely different from what Renji and I planned 20 years ago
It’s been one hurdle after another for the Prithviraj-Shaji Kailas team’s Kaduva for the past month. Its scriptwriter Jinu Abraham had to file a case in the High Court recently to stay the promotions and shooting of Suresh Gopi’s 250th film, on the grounds of plagiarism. Now, Pala-based Jose Kuruvinakunnel, who is allegedly the source of inspiration for both the Prithviraj and Suresh Gopi films, says that he has not sold the rights to anyone to make a movie on his film.
Jose’s doubts that Kaduva is based on his life stemmed from its makers announcing that it is inspired from a true story and its director Shaji Kailas had in fact announced a movie 20 years ago based on the former’s life, with Mohanlal in the lead and script by Renji Panicker.
On this, Shaji Kailas tells us, “I know Jose and it’s true that Renji and I had planned a film based on him. But Jinu’s script is on an entirely different subject. Kaduva is a story of a young planter with no connection whatsoever to Jose. People are creating controversies because they don’t know what the content is; only Prithvi and I have read the entire script.”

Ask him if he had included any incident from his discussions with Jose and Renji, and the director says, “Jinu had written the script for another director but because it didn’t move forward, they dropped the film and he approached us. The character Kaduvakunnel Kuruvachan is entirely fictional.”
Talking about the project planned on Jose’s life, Shaji says that he first met with Jose when he was shooting in Pala for the movie FIR. “My friend took me to Jose’s house to see if we can shoot there. I liked the house and his character and we talked for some time. He and his son took us around to some locations. After that, I told Renji that I met this person and he said he already knew about him. We then thought it was a good idea to make a film based on his character and announced a project with Mohanlal. But both films are different subjects,” reiterates the filmmaker, adding that Jose is "free to pursue any course of action".
Jose, meanwhile, had said that the only person he had given “verbal consent” to make a film based on his life was Renji. Ask the scriptwriter if there’s any similarity between Kaduva and the previous film, and Renji says, “I don’t know because I am not associated with the film. We had announced a movie with Mohanlal but that was dropped for some reason.”

There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.
