Ippozhum mid 80s thotulla classic entertainers TV yil regular aayi varunnu.

New gen/realistic movies mainstream aayi thudangiyathu Traffic super hit ayathinu shesham anennu parayam. But even that movie wasn't like a non cinematic docu fiction. Commercial entertainers were always the preference for wider audience. So if Mayankunju, Pada etc can't work even on OTT, such films won't be made anymore. Already Malayalam OTT market has gone down.

A movie like Ishq won't collect anywhere near it did pre-pandemic. Even then it was just a hit based on budget, I guess. Kumbalangi, Thondimuthal type films might still collect even if not to super hit level like pre-pandemic. Such movies depended on vast majority of its niche audience going to theaters including 35-50 age group. Youngsters might still still go for it but 35-50 age group have become very selective when it comes to spending money in cinemas after subscribing to 2-3 OTT platforms.
What I'm trying to say is that Pada and Malayankunju especially Malayankunju are more meant for theater than OTT. I watched Thirteen Lives today and that is another film which could have been a must-watch in theaters due to the outstanding technical attributes but there were no mass moments or much drama. The closest a Malayalam movie has come to that is Douthyam which I believe flopped. We need to overcome our bias that only mass/comedy type movies will work in theaters. All sorts of movies can be theater watches and the more varied the better, especially with the onset of multiplexes. I understand folks are fed up of realistic films esp in theaters and there are certain such films which have really tested my patience. OTOH I was not a big fan of Kaduva, JGM, KGF-2 or Vikram. This realistic v mass films conflict on SM is not helping things one bit.

One more film which I would have loved to watch in a theater would be Oruthee. The climax chase scene in that film was just brilliantly depicted and shot and rivals the elevation moments of the bigger movies. Again that is not at all a mass film or comedy. All these sort of films are failing primarily due to poor promotions. If a poster of Malayankunju comes and claims that 'those with claustophorbia should avoid watching the film', automatically you are alienating a section of the target audience. Ultimately luck is above all else.

See… We cannot gauge audience with what we like.. majority of the Audience comes to the theatre to laugh, to be thrilled etc… In such a scenario, a survival movie or a realistic movie will get only few audience.. it was like that earlier & it will be like that going forward.. If I am spending 200 rs on a ticket, I should atleast feel entertained.. If not, why should I even spend on that movie?

Watched Paapan 2nd time round. Just as engaging and riveting as the 1st time.

Lot more clarity on the second viewing and even that song has an important role to play in the events that unfold. Brilliantly done. The score also sounded better and was so crucial in elevating the interval scene.
