If you go through youtube videos featuring Jayan, you will see numerous comments claiming that, "If Jayan was alive, Mammotty & Mohanlal would have found it hard to survive". The weirdest fact is most of those comments belongs to the generation of Fafa & DQ. From what I saw of Jayan, I believe that he was a predecessor of Suresh Gopi. Both were oozing with masculinity and a starpower. But both never displayed any brilliance in acting talent when you compare with Big Ms.

One interesting comment I saw was a person claiming that Jayan with his action avatar was going to be a Pan South Indian star because Telugu & Tamil industry were planning to cast him in their movies. I am not sure how true it is but again taking an example from Suresh Gopi's career, thats not impossible. Maybe he would have changed the way Malayalam Cinema worked by giving more importance to action mass masala like Telugu/Tamil of 80s & 90s.

I believe that Jayan wouldn't have survived as a star beyond 1985. Also I am adding the fact he was 39 in 1981.

Whats you take on this hypothetical situation?
1980s and 90s was the writer-director era. So Jayan wouldnt have survived as versatility was the need of the hour which Big Ms had in spades.

Shankar was a star till mid-1980s but was unable to adapt to the changing trends and thus ended up being relegated to supporting roles by early 90s. That fall from fame was something I am fascinated by.

I will give you a possibility why Jayan could have survived during the Big Ms era. Before Big Ms, give me a name of a true blooded action star from Malayalam other than Jayan. Take your time and I believe you will not find a name. Prem Nazeer, Sathyan, Madhu, Sukumaran, Soman who were the big names in the industry during each era were not projected as action stars like say MGR. I know people from previous generation who loves MGR's action movies more than Sivaji's acting class.

There is something about this genre which makes stars quicker than any genre. Infact I am not sure today you can qualify as a "star" in true sense without the action genre. Jayaram, Nivin Pauly, Dileep etc just couldn't hit that mark. I believe Mukesh, who was more talented actor than Jayaram, wouldn't have made it becoz he can never be an action star. Check other language movie stars before OTT or say 2000. Majority were stars from action genre. Rajnikant, Vijaykanth, Sharathkumar, Chiranjeevi and in English its Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger did well in Kerala. The latter two sold their movies just using their names in 90s. I don't recall seeing a Tom Hanks fan or Jack Nicholson fan then.

This is where Jayan had an advantage and only person he was challenged would have been Mohanlal. Mohanlal would have easily beaten him because of his versatility. Now take Suresh Gopi. He is 60+, made a hit right now, in an action/thriller genre which clearly conveys the fact that there is a sense of excitement in actors who became stars through action genre. Jayaram cannot comeback, Dileep, I am not sure and my prediction is Nivin will lose his starpower within next 5-8 years.

Finally about his pan south indian appeal (if things gone as planned), he might have been a bigger star than Big Ms. Infact the only actor who had the opportunity on his lap (and didn't take it) was Suresh Gopi. Both have the same genre as commonality.

Except the above scenario, I don't see possibility of Jayan surviving beyond 85. Writers like MT, Padmarajan, Sreenivasan & directors like Sathyan Anthikad, Kamal, Priyadarshan etc. wouldn't have preferred him in their movies. This would have killed Jayan's chances to survive unless the pan south indian appeal like Rajni, Kamal.

Njaan ithu thudangaan kaaranam paranjallo...Youtube comments. I don't think majority are from Jayan era or even 80s era. They are mostly from current era. Either they are just showing pure hatred towards Big Ms (which is a huge possibility) or a genuine reason.

Action Starsinte age oru valiya factor alla (if maintained well) ennu Tom Cruise, Mohanlal okke prove cheyythallo. Innum Sylvester , Arnold okke tharunna oru excitement unde. Athu honestly enikku oru Di Caprio or Hanks onnum tharunilla. Jayan vere oru genre hero ananekil, I would have discarded that comment without spending a moment. But the genre and the fact that there was no "actual" action star in Malayalam before Jayan made me think about such a possibility!!!

Thread poottunnathinu munpu...enne mention cheytha sthithikku njanum oru comment idaam... Jayan's presence would have at the most delayed Mammootty's and Mohanlal's rise to the top by a maximum of 5 years. No disrespect to Jayan, but the two Ms were just too good at the time to be kept at second level for longer than that. Jayan's rise was partly because of a lack of any worthy successor to Prem Nazir..and also because he came as a whiff of fresh air, different from any star that Malayalam had seen before. That wave would have surely lasted a few more years. And some things we can never say because we never got to see Jayan in a zone other than the one he ended up being stereotyped in.
